Chapter 96: One Bible
Chapter 96 A Bible (Seeking monthly votes and recommendations)
Before Larry walked out the door, he imagined a hundred possibilities in his mind, but he really couldn't find any flaws in himself that might cause trouble for the police.
When Larry stepped out the gate and spotted his bicycle, he knew who these policemen were working for.
The two policemen in gray uniforms spoke respectfully and were very polite.
One of the policemen tapped on the bicycle and asked,
"Is this your bicycle? Logan Stone entrusted us to bring it to you. He couldn't return it to you in person, so he asked us to deliver it."
Larry nodded and smiled.
He met Logan the Friday before last, when the two were still planning to do business with Docarnegie Steel.
Logan then said that he would be going to England with Mr. Hemings the following Friday.
He must be heading to England, so he asked the policeman to bring his bicycle back to him first!
However, Larry soon realized that something was unusual about this place.
No matter how influential Logan is, why would he let the policeman bring the bicycle back?
Do police officers take on side jobs?
"Thank you, two respectable police officers. This is my bicycle."
Larry smiled, placed his hands on the bicycle handlebars, turned around, pulled two aluminum tube cigars from his pocket, and respectfully handed them to the two policemen.
The two policemen looked around and, seeing that no one was paying attention, casually took the cigars and put them in their pockets.
Larry then asked with a smile, "I really didn't expect Logan to trouble you two so much, and for so many days in a row. I really feel bad about it."
The two policemen exchanged a glance. One of them used one finger to lift his cap, revealing a full head of red hair, and said casually, "We're both Celts, so it's only right that we help him out."
Larry maintained a smile on his face, but inwardly he was unimpressed by the police officer's answer.
Logan's relationship with the police is far more complex than simply "fellow countrymen helping each other".
In the Pinkerton detectives' crackdown on the workers' strike, Logan's unexpectedly good information, a capability beyond his status, greatly surprised Larry.
Now that he can get the police to help him deliver his bicycle, it shows that Logan's capabilities far exceed his expectations.
Logan is just an 18-year-old youth; he certainly doesn't have that much influence.
But considering what he said before, that his father "made it big" before moving away from Beigang District.
Larry judged that Logan's father must be a remarkable person, possibly even a high-ranking police officer.
Larry's mind raced with these thoughts in an instant. Just as he was about to exchange a few pleasantries and say goodbye, one of the policemen took out a bulging brown paper bag from his satchel and solemnly handed it to Larry.
"What is this?" Larry took the brown paper bag with a puzzled look. He found that the brown paper bag was sealed tightly with sealing wax and felt that it was shaped like a thick book.
The policeman who handed him the brown paper bag said solemnly, "This was also given to you by Logan. He specifically instructed us to deliver it to you personally."
Another policeman nodded and said calmly, "Yes! He said this is something your family really needs. We could have just left the bicycle at the sales office, but because this book is more important, we had to deliver it to you in person. That's why we've been coming for four or five days straight until we finally met you."
Larry raised an eyebrow and replied with a smile, "That would be too much trouble for you."
The first policeman frowned slightly, his face full of doubt, and asked, "What exactly is this thing? When Logan handed it to us, the look on his face was like he was handing us his family heirloom..."
Another policeman casually remarked, "Yeah, would it be convenient to open it and take a look? We've been curious about it for a long time too."
Larry's heart skipped a beat. He knew Logan was a cautious man and wouldn't think that sealing wax would be enough to keep others from spying. So, in front of the two policemen, he tore open the brown paper bag...
The two police officers were also curious about what this thing was that Logan had solemnly handed over to them and asked them to hand it to him personally.
The two policemen stood there, craning their necks, also wanting to see what secrets were hidden beneath the sealing wax on the parchment. Larry tore open the cover, revealing a thick, leather-bound Bible.
Disappointment immediately appeared on the faces of the two policemen. The suspense they had been waiting for for days was over, but they felt no joy at knowing the answer. It turned out to be just a Bible!
Larry held the Bible in his hands, his face beaming with joy, and said, “This is wonderful! My parents really need this Bible. It’s so precious and timely.”
The two policemen exchanged a glance, thinking to themselves that this made sense. This was the Bible; who dared say it wasn't important?
Larry held the thick Bible in his hand, but immediately thought of the movie "The Shawshank Redemption" he had watched in his previous life, and the hammer hidden in the Bible. He wondered if Logan had also hidden some secret in this book.
Larry even thought with a wicked sense of humor:
Did Logan also hollow out the pages to hide something?
However, Larry immediately dismissed his idea.
Absolutely not!
Logan, a devout believer who would pray for God's forgiveness even if he uttered a curse word on the back wall of the church, would never dare to do something like hollowing out the Bible.
But there's definitely something hidden in the book, that's for sure.
The two policemen delivered everything Logan had entrusted to Larry, and with the secret they had been waiting for for days revealed, they made an excuse to leave.
Larry held the Bible in one hand and waved the other to the two policemen, smiling as he said, "Thank you for your help, officers. I'll thank him in person when he returns from England."
Upon hearing this, the two policemen paused, turned to Larry, and said, "Logan didn't go to England..."
"Huh? He didn't go to England? Then why would he let you bring me these things? Where is he?" A sense of foreboding suddenly rose in Larry's heart.
The two police officers looked a little strange. One of them said to Larry with a serious expression, "He was attacked by an unknown thug. He was hit in the head with a hammer and is now lying in a bed at Boston National Hospital."
Larry's pupils contracted, his face instantly changing color, and he asked urgently, "What happened? Who attacked him! Is he seriously injured?"
A policeman shook his head. "Fortunately, Logan noticed the danger in time. When the hammer came down, he dodged it just in time, so he only suffered a broken forehead and there was no fatal injury. He just needs to rest in the hospital for a while."
Another officer frowned and replied, "We're still investigating who attacked him. This isn't over yet; we'll definitely find the guy who attacked Logan."
Larry asked for the location of the hospital where Logan was staying before saying goodbye to the police.
Back at the branch office, Larry casually tossed his bicycle into the warehouse, then held the thick Bible in his hands, his brow furrowed.
Larry then found a small, empty meeting room, closed the door, and gently opened the Bible.
In the very center of the Bible, Larry found a deposit slip from the First National Bank of Boston:
Depositor's name: Larry Livingston, deposit amount: $17927.
Larry immediately understood. This was the $500 profit he had made from his investment in Carnegie Steel two weeks ago. The thing Logan was most eager to give him was this certificate of deposit.
Turning the deposit slip over, there were a few lines of hastily written pencil marks on the back, which read:
"78.9-42.5, I've already taken my commission. The password is the money you and I each earned from our first trade..."
"The password is 2117!"
Larry suddenly remembered that when the two of them first made a deal, Logan got $21 and he got $17.
"Logan, you really are a man of your word... but who would have done this to you?"
Larry fell into deep thought.
