Chapter 195 The Strange Tale of the Snake Demon, Searching for Someone in Vain
After they finished eating, they packed their bags and prepared to leave to continue their mountain climb.
Suddenly, I heard a voice from behind me.
"Next time you two come, please don't rest in this cave."
"If you walk fast enough, there should be a temple to stay in on the mountain. If you are lazy, there is also Puzhao Temple at the foot of the mountain. You can spend some money to stay there for a night."
"Why?"
The two scholars were bewildered.
They looked over curiously, their eyes probing. This place was sheltered from the wind and spacious; it couldn't be better.
And it doesn't cost any money.
Jiang She smiled. He had naturally put away the cups and plates from last night, and a sleepy black cat was nestled in his arms.
He seemed to be joking, saying:
"You two don't know, this is where the snakes and pythons live on the mountain. They came back to sleep last night, but when they saw a lot of human presence in the cave, they left!"
"There were many people last night, which is why the python managed to escape. But such good luck won't last forever."
"After we go down the mountain, we should also tell Zhang Wulang about it!"
The two scholars were startled, then burst into laughter.
"Is Mr. Jiang joking?"
"I never expected someone as magnanimous as Jiang Langjun to be so witty, haha..."
"How big could a snake on the mountain be to live in such a large place? It must really be the giant snake that Zhang Wulang dreamed of!"
As they talked, the two of them suddenly felt a little nervous.
Zhang Wulang dreamt of a giant snake and found its molted skin in this very cave. They also stayed here last night.
The two brothers looked at each other.
One of them changed the subject, chuckling, "However, what Jiang Langjun said makes sense. Next time I'll tell Zhang Wulang that I won't stay here anymore..."
"Yes! I'll remember that for Erlang too."
The two scholars had already packed their things; birds were chirping outside, and it was broad daylight.
"Young Master Jiang, um... we'll be going now, farewell."
"If what Jiang Langjun said is true, then those of you should leave as soon as possible, after all, it's not a place to stay for long."
The two said.
They didn't really believe it; they just found it creepy. They weren't particularly scared, nor did they truly believe that a giant snake had returned.
If such a huge snake really came back, why would it be afraid of the few people scattered in the cave? They probably wouldn't even be enough to feed that giant snake for two days!
The two said goodbye, picked up their bags, and left.
Jiang She woke up Li Bai and Yuan Danqiu.
"Taibai, Danqiuzi, let's go back."
Li Bai groggily awoke, nudged Yuan Danqiu, and the two discovered that the sinister snake demon had vanished sometime earlier. He rubbed his face and gazed at Mount Tai in the early morning light.
A mountain mist spread.
Upon closer inspection, however, the ghostly figure could no longer be seen.
Having seen the view of Mount Tai at night, I had a general idea of what it was like.
The group descended the mountain.
……
The two scholars left the cave, and some of the nearby wild grass was bent over, but they didn't pay any attention to it.
Mount Tai is the foremost of the Five Sacred Mountains, a famous mountain in the world, and is frequently visited. Last night, a few more people stayed in the cave; perhaps those same people went out to urinate and trampled the grass.
As he walked, Fang Da stopped.
"What's wrong, brother?"
Another scholar asked.
"Are you not feeling well? You can't still be thinking about that cloth that got blown away yesterday, can you? I told you, you should have thrown it away a long time ago. No matter what the situation is at home, we can always afford to buy a new cloth..."
Fang Da shook his head without speaking, pointing to a spot on the ground where grass stems had been crushed and twisted.
"Erlang, take a look."
Who stepped on this grass?
After being struck on the head, Fang Er took a closer look at the weeds. They were flattened, as if crushed by some enormous wild beast. Only a narrow strip remained; the other weeds beside it were intact.
His heart skipped a beat, and he stopped talking.
His older brother said from the side.
"Do you think... what Jiang Langjun said might be true?"
Both scholars were terrified and immediately turned back to the cave to ask what had happened. "I'm afraid there really is a snake or python."
"Luckily, I survived..."
"I never imagined that my older brother and I would encounter such supernatural things!"
"Yes, go and ask Jiang Langjun what happened last night. He must know!"
The two carried their bundles and turned back. The grass had all been knocked down, making it much easier for them to walk on the mountain path.
After walking for more than fifteen minutes, the two brothers finally made their way back to the cave.
But the cave was empty.
Only in the middle of the open space was there a little firewood left, which had burned all night and been extinguished, leaving behind a ground covered in ashes and a few small paw prints nearby.
Where are there people?
……
……
Jiang She was at the foot of the mountain, wiping the cat's paws.
This cat used to love crawling into the stove and getting covered in ash. It does the same thing now; whenever it sees someone trying to put out the firewood, it joins in to help.
They seem unfazed by the heat.
"It's clean now..."
The cat's voice is soft.
Jiang She released the cat, shook his sleeves, and two carriages appeared on the ground. The horses were confused. When they realized the place had changed, they sniffed and lowered their heads to eat grass.
We strolled back slowly.
It was still cold on the mountain, but once you got to the city, you could see with the naked eye that people on the street were wearing thinner spring clothes.
Young men, dressed in bright clothes, walked together in twos and threes. When they encountered a beautiful and elegant woman, they would stop and pretend to be discussing poetry and literature, but would inadvertently glance at her a few more times.
The young woman was about to leave.
Having finally mustered the courage to call out to the other person, she hesitated for a moment, unsure of what to say, until even her ears turned red.
His cronies behind him burst into laughter and teasing...
He admired young women.
Jiang She watched the commotion for a while.
As you approach the alley entrance, you can hear the neighbors chatting and gossiping under the trees. You can also smell the aroma of food as you sit at a stall and eat a bowl of steamed buns.
The stall owner was the same person, but he looked a bit older, with wrinkles on his face and his skin darker from the sun.
Upon seeing Li Bai and Yuan Danqiu, he greeted them.
He stopped packing up and asked, "Would you two gentlemen like a bowl of steamed buns?"
Jiang She paid the bills, and each person ate a bowl.
The stall owner beamed with joy, but it was indeed time to close up shop. After counting the number of customers, he realized he didn't have enough ingredients, so he went to a nearby tavern to borrow some. Before long, several bowls of steaming chicken soup dumplings were served.
"Please enjoy your meal."
Jiang She counted out a few more coins and bought two skewers of roasted mutton, which he shared with the cat.
The cat sat on a dry lotus leaf, squinting as it ate.
The stall owner next to him was wiping his hands with a towel and tidying up his stall when he suddenly saw this scene and glanced at the other person's clothes and appearance.
After a while.
The stall owner, still somewhat skeptical, asked, "Young master, did you often eat before closing your stall at 9 AM?"
Jiang She nodded.
"haven't seen you for a long time."
The stall owner breathed a sigh of relief. "I knew you looked familiar, young man! But Jiang? Well, it's been about three years since we last met, hasn't it?"
Jiang She laughed.
"Yes."
The stall owner scrutinized his face, finding it increasingly similar to his memory. In the past three years, even Li Langjun and Yuan Daozhang beside him seemed more mature.
Jiang Langjun hasn't changed at all.
How strange.
