Doomsday America

Chapter 176 Rooftop Horror

Chapter 176 Rooftop Horror
Meanwhile, on the helicopter.

Gavin sat opposite Paul, lit a cigarette, and tossed it to Paul.

Paul took the cigarette, put it in his mouth, and said to Gavin with a smile.

"Boss, this is my first time working with you. You're much more handsome than I look on TV!"

"what?"

Upon hearing this, Gavin chuckled and responded.

"Don't flatter me, buddy. Flattering me won't make the zombies abandon you."

"But I'll let you give me a few cigarettes, boss. Tsk, boss's cigarettes, they just taste different!"

Paul took an exaggerated deep drag of his cigarette, then exhaled the smoke in front of him, engulfing his entire face in the haze.

As Gavin and his companion were enveloped in smoke, the voice of flight instructor Sean came through the walkie-talkie.

"Sir, we are approaching downtown Dallas and are expected to be about six minutes away from the Omni Dallas Hotel."

"So, should we go check out that enormous aggregate first, or go to the hotel and pick up those girls?"

At this point, Sean fell silent and gave up the walkie-talkie line.

Gavin spoke softly into the walkie-talkie.

"Save the people first, then go see our giant figurine!"

"Roger that, boss. Six minutes left. Hopefully, the zombies in Dallas will give us some face!"

Sean shouted in response, and the plane continued to approach the heart of Dallas.

A few minutes later, Paul stood up and opened the cabin door for Gavin, who threw his burnt-out cigarette butt out of the cabin and picked up his binoculars to look toward the Omni Dallas Hotel.

The Omni Dallas Hotel, while not exactly a landmark, is by no means the most luxurious hotel in Dallas.

Overall, however, the hotel still has its own style, namely its somewhat unique L-shaped building and relatively large area.

Gavin spotted the hotel rooftop immediately, and his gaze met that of the women living on it.

Meanwhile, on the rooftop, Wang Ling was also looking at Gavin, who was holding the binoculars high in the sky, with their only pair of binoculars.

"They're coming!"

Wang Ling spoke to her companions with a slightly excited expression.

"And there were actually two helicopters!"

"Yes, their camp is really big, they even managed to send out two helicopters. But their helicopters are a bit different from the ones we saw last time, maybe they have a third and a fourth helicopter!"

Beside Wang Ling, Greta, with her blue-dyed hair, murmured expectantly, then glanced at her tent with disgust.

She was already fed up with the living conditions on the hotel rooftop. It was cold, empty, and had just rained a few days ago, making it damp and nauseating!
What's more, this place is extremely unsafe. Even speaking a little loudly might attract the zombies on the top floor!

Now that the rescuers have finally arrived, Greta just wants to get off this damn rooftop as soon as possible and go somewhere where she can at least sleep on a mattress, instead of having to curl up on a damp mattress every night!

Good heavens, if only I could have a glass of hot milk!

Hearing Greta's words, Wang Ling pursed her lips.

"Don't think too much, Greta. Even if we are rescued, you must not mention to them that their helicopter almost killed us a few days ago, so as not to anger them!"

"This isn't like our previous escapes. Although I was able to take down Wesford and Clyde, it was all by luck. Our fighting ability is no match for real men!"

"Who knows how many people are in their camp? If you anger them, I can't guarantee I can save you again!"

At this point, Wang Ling turned to Greta and looked at her seriously.

Greta nodded hastily in response.

"Don't treat me like a fool. Why would I provoke a group of dangerous men? Besides, I angered Wesford because he wanted to mess with me, so I patted his basket with my knee!"

"Besides, Gavin is every woman's dream lover. If Gavin really wants to sleep with me, then I can sleep with him! God, I'm so looking forward to that kind of thing, how could I refuse him?"

"So don't worry, you big-eyed Asian girl~"

At this point, Greta tentatively reached out to Wang Ling, wanting to take Wang Ling's binoculars.

She couldn't wait to see if Gavin had arrived.

Seeing this, Wang Ling confirmed that the helicopter had begun to circle around them, so she handed the binoculars to Greta and nervously gripped the hilt of her knife, continuing to keep an eye on the plane in the sky.

Greta took the binoculars and immediately began to examine them closely.

About ten seconds later, she suddenly spoke up in shock.

"Wait, God, the announcement doesn't seem to be a joke. Gavin really is coming to rescue us. I think I can see Gavin. He's on the plane!"

"Good heavens, even though his face was covered, how could I not recognize a big star? Two years ago, my girlfriends and I even went to his trash can to look for condoms that were in stock, but unfortunately we didn't find anything!"

"I'm so lucky, a big star came to pick me up, I..."

"Shut up, keep your voice down, you idiot!"

Not far away, Anna, with her severed hand, abruptly interrupted Greta's ramblings, while her lips twitched with anticipation as she looked at a parachute gradually descending from the sky.

Meanwhile, on the helicopter.

Gavin frowned as he watched the descending parachute and the safety box containing the walkie-talkie.

"Paul!"

He pointed to the trajectory of the parachute and said.

"The trajectory of this airdrop is a bit off!"

"There's nothing we can do, boss. We're just too far from the roof, and besides, we don't know how to adjust the direction of the walkie-talkie!"

Paul shook his head helplessly; he could see that the first walkie-talkie probably wouldn't make it to the roof.

As expected, even after Wang Ling and the others saw the airdrop approaching, they immediately rushed to wait in the direction from which it was gradually getting closer.

The airdrop, influenced by the wind, veered nearly 170 meters off the roof and continued falling toward the road.

After the airdrop landed, a considerable number of zombies suddenly poured out of the shops on both sides of the road, surrounding the airdrop.

Gavin pursed his lips as he looked at the zombies surrounding the airdrop, then spoke softly.

"It's alright, next one. We still have five more airdrop parachutes, so we should be fine!"

"No problem, sir!"

Paul confidently gave Gavin a thumbs-up, then continued broadcasting the message.

And so, about fourteen minutes later...

Gavin and Paul looked at the last makeshift airdrop parachute in the plane and couldn't help but exchange bewildered glances.

In the driver's seat, Steve rubbed his face helplessly and said to Gavin.

"Boss, and Paul, you two are a bit unreliable. We only have one last chance!"

"Don't fucking talk nonsense. You could throw it and it would be the same. Can you guarantee your luck will be better than mine?"

Gavin cursed at Steve in annoyance, and then threw the last airdrop onto the roof.

close!

Getting closer!
But in the end, the airdrop still landed in the parking lot near the hotel from a distance of nearly forty meters from the top of the hill.

Watching the airdrop pass by, Wang Ling desperately threw out her rope, but her strength was far from enough to throw the rope thirty or forty meters away, and she couldn't catch the missed airdrop at all.

Seeing yet another airdrop slip away from them, Greta, Anna, and Meryl all wore expressions of helplessness.

Looking at the women gathered on the edge of the rooftop.

Let's take another look at the cabin, where the airdrop parachutes are no longer available.

Gavin swallowed hard, then he and Paul looked at each other in bewilderment.

On the walkie-talkie, Sean circled around and said helplessly.

"Sir, I only had time to make six simple airdrop parachutes last night. Damn it, the parachutes I made are probably not suitable for precise deployment. After all, I don't have any data to support them, and my hands-on skills are only average!"

"Alright, stop taking the blame. You have no experience in making airdrop parachutes, and I have no experience in accurately dropping supplies. We both need to practice!"

Gavin responded to Sean.

Listening to Gavin's words, Steve hovered the plane while asking Gavin with a wry smile.

"So what do we do, boss? Should we just use yesterday's plan and have Sean drive the Apache to a distant place to lure out the zombies?"

"Of course, this is the only option we have!"

Faced with Steve's question, Gavin nodded helplessly and continued.

"Hopefully, the survivors on the rooftop won't be so frightened by our upcoming actions that they'll do something foolish!"

"Wait, boss!"

Just as Gavin was about to have Sean descend to a lower altitude near the hotel and use the sound of the propellers to attract the zombies...

Suddenly, Paul grabbed Gavin's arm and spoke to him.

"Boss, we have another way to contact the survivors. I can parachute down and take a walkie-talkie to the survivors!"

“Since our goal is to take the survivors away today, I think there won’t be too much risk for me to parachute in.”

“I have a lot of experience with parachuting, and the roof of the Omni Dallas Hotel is quite large. There’s absolutely no way I would miss the chance to land on such a big roof and be surrounded by zombies on the street!”

"Trust me, boss, I'll definitely be fine!"

At this point, Paul gripped Gavin's arm and stared intently at him.

Meeting Paul's gaze, Gavin took a deep breath and then launched into a tirade without any restraint.

"Your idea is to put yourself at risk? And how can you be sure your guarantees will allow you to do what you want?"

"What a joke! If you miss the space on the roof, you'll be surrounded by zombies on the ground, and we won't even have a chance to save you!"

"Because I can't lower the helicopter any lower than the main building. If there are still zombies inside, and they break through the windows and fall onto the helicopter, they could very well damage the plane, especially our propellers!"

At this point, Gavin gripped Paul's wrist tightly, reminding the kid not to make any sudden moves.

Then, he spoke to Sean on the walkie-talkie.

"Sean, get ready to attract zombies!"

"But boss, I think Paul's suggestion is really good. The parachutes we use are not the handmade ones I made, and I have faith in Paul's paratrooper skills. He's one of my top trainees!"

"Of course, Nicholas is also one of my top students. After all, only the two of them are qualified to learn with me how to fly an F-35 and dodge missiles. We have plenty of experience in crashing planes and parachuting!"

After saying that, Sean, far away in the Apache cockpit, gave Paul and Gavin a thumbs up.

Hearing the instructor's support, Paul gave Gavin a stubborn look.

He grabbed Gavin's coat and continued, "Look, boss, even my instructor supports me!"

"Trust me, I'll be fine. It's just a regular low-altitude skydive, nothing adventurous, especially since the hotel rooftop is really big!"

"And then what? Bullshit, what are we supposed to do after you parachute out? Aren't we still supposed to send the Apaches to lure out the zombies and create space for our transport planes to land?"

Gavin abruptly interrupted Paul's self-righteous speech and started yelling at him!

"Making contact with the survivors on the roof in advance can indeed give us information about the basic number and distribution of zombies in the hotel, but beyond that, contact cannot provide us with any further help!"

“We can’t expect the survivors to pull out a ladder six or seven hundred meters high and come to meet us so that we can safely take them away!”

"So, while contacting them would help, it wouldn't be of much help, given that we already have a rescue plan in place. And the benefits of that aren't worth the risk of losing you!"

“You are important to me, Paul, even more important than the survivors!”

"If I had to choose between you two, I'd rather you live, so don't fucking try to pull that individual hero act on me!"

As soon as he finished speaking, Gavin patted Paul on the shoulder heavily, then pressed the young man into his seat.

Seeing Gavin's resolute face, Paul paused slightly, then pursed his lips and sat down helplessly.

"Didn't you yourself have the nickname 'Quarterback with a Knife' back then? Quarterback personally dribbling the ball for over 80 yards to score a touchdown, that's your record, and more than once..."

He couldn't help but mutter something to Gavin, but his voice was too soft for Gavin to hear clearly.

After he muttered that, Steve, amused, yelled at Paul from inside the transport plane's cockpit.

"What are you muttering about, buddy? I can't fucking hear you. Besides, just listen to the boss. His judgment is never wrong, just trust him!"

"That's right, buddy, trust my judgment!"

Gavin echoed Steve's emphasis, then gave Sean a command.

"Sean, lower your altitude and fly low over Omnidales to try and draw the zombies' attention to your side!"

"Note that, on the one hand, you should not be taller than other buildings, and on the other hand, you should not stay in the same position, OK?"

"No problem, sir, watch my performance!"

Upon hearing Gavin's order, Sean grinned and then lowered the helicopter.

On the rooftop, as one of the two helicopters descended lower and lower, Wang Ling suddenly drew her samurai sword and spoke to the tense women around her.

"We missed our chance to contact them. It seems they're going to use their second plan, which is to take direct action!"

"In my recent operations, although I consciously lured the zombies in the stairwell and tried my best to prevent them from chasing me into the stairwell, I can't guarantee that if the unusual activity caused by the helicopter occurs, some zombies might accidentally rush into the stairwell!"

"All of you go to the edge and prepare to be ready to provide backup. Greta, if the zombies break through the stairwell, you need to turn on our loudspeakers immediately and try to lure the zombies to jump off the building. Can you do that?"

"I should be fine, Ling!"

Greta swallowed hard, then looked at the loudspeaker not far away.

At the same time, the Apache had descended to a height of only 800 meters above the ground, a height that allowed the sound of its propellers to reach the ears of countless zombies!

hiss! ! !
Roar! ! !
In an instant, the roars of countless zombies echoed through southwest Dallas!
Even at the Omni Dallas Hotel, where the survivors were staying, more than one group of zombies were making the loudest possible commotion.

Wow!

Crackling!

Countless zombies burst through the glass from each floor and leaped towards Apache.

boom!
bang bang bang! ! !
One zombie after another crashed heavily to the ground, and the spray of blood and the constant thuds of falling made the survivors on the rooftop involuntarily feel a chill run down their spines!
In the sky, Gavin stared intently in the direction of the Omni Dallas Hotel.

Blah blah blah!

Visibly, a considerable number of zombies were leaping out from each floor of the Omni Dallas Hotel and crashing heavily to the ground!

Gavin nodded in satisfaction upon seeing this.

Clearly, the helicopter's sound-absorbing effect on zombies remains as sharp as ever.

In this way, the plan should go smoothly. Once most of the zombies have been lured away by the Apache, they can descend to a lower altitude!

Just as Gavin was beginning to relax, on the roof of the Omni Dallas Hotel...

Boom!
Suddenly, a loud bang rang in the ears of the survivors.

In an instant, the survivors all stared wide-eyed in horror at the stairwell leading to the roof.

To everyone's surprise, the stairwell door shook dramatically, followed by a series of loud crashing sounds.

Boom boom boom! ! !
The frequency of the impact sounds increased rapidly, and then the impact sounds simply increased in number!
Seeing this, Wang Ling swallowed hard, then gripped her katana tightly and growled at her companions.

"Don't scream, don't panic. They won't get through that door so easily. We've already taken precautions, haven't we!"

That's true. After receiving the broadcast last night, they piled all the miscellaneous items on the hotel roof that wouldn't affect their sleep at the entrance to the stairwell.

If there aren't enough zombies, then even the zombies won't be able to break down that door...

Wow! ! !

Before the survivors could finish speaking, a crack suddenly appeared in the stairwell door.

As the gap appeared, drops of blood and flesh flew out from it, splashing onto the iron pipes and bedding blocking the stairwell.

"Fuck you!"

At that moment, Wang Ling simply cursed in her hometown dialect!

Because if the zombies can break down that door, it means that the number of zombies will not be in the single digits!

"Ahhhh!!!"

Behind Wang Ling, Meryl instinctively screamed.

Snapped!
The moment Meryl's scream rang out, Greta gritted her teeth, swung her arm, and slapped the freckled Meryl across the face.

"Shut the fuck up, or I'll kick you off the roof. You bitch!!!"

Greta cursed at Meryl fiercely, then gripped the solid wood chair leg in her hand and looked nervously at the door that was being repeatedly impacted.

Meanwhile, in the sky, at an altitude of nearly 1,600 meters!

Gavin noticed the situation on the roof and immediately spoke to Steve.

"Steve, prepare to land!"

"What? Land now? Sean hasn't attracted enough zombies yet, and they're still falling like chicken wings onto the scalding ground. Should we wait a bit longer?"

While instinctively questioning Gavin, Steve was already swerving the plane downwards!
This is what Gavin admires most about Steve. If there is anyone in the camp who is most obedient to Gavin, then Steve and Madison would definitely be in the top three.

Especially Steve, this guy's trust in me is not just talk. Even if he has doubts about my orders, he will still choose to obey them!

At this moment, watching the altitude drop continuously, Gavin shouted an explanation to Steve.

“We did descend a bit too early, but the survivors on the roof don’t have much time left either; their safety doors are being breached!”

"Sean's Apache helicopter is indeed a good bait, but for the zombies inside the building, Sean's voice can only provide them with a basic direction for hunting!"

"In this general direction, each zombie could potentially chase after them from a different direction, and among them, there is a good chance that some zombies might accidentally stumble into the stairwell!"

"Zombies don't retreat easily, so once they rush into the stairwell, they can only keep moving forward until they impact the survivors and create noise to attract more zombies!"

"So we have to act fast, Paul, get ready to fire!"

"Roger that, sir!!!"

Beside Gavin, watching the rooftops gradually approach below, Paul had already placed the HK416 on his shoulder.

And he had already set up his gun.

On the roof...

Wow! ! !

Bang!

After a loud bang, the stairwell door was suddenly flung open!
Looking at the slightly wrinkled, thin, and withered zombie, Meryl immediately wanted to scream again, but she ultimately covered her mouth, trembling as she backed away.

Wang Ling then yelled at Greta.

"Greta, megaphone!"

"Okay, Ling!!!"

Greta gritted her teeth and responded, then pointed the remote control into the distance and pressed the power button.

Suddenly, a loudspeaker on the left side of the roof, about seventy meters away from the survivor, started playing a Michael Jackson song.

Hearing only the one sound, Greta nervously looked to her right and frantically continued pressing the remote control.

But no matter how many times she pressed the button, no second sound came out!
"Enough! Be quiet, hide and don't make a sound!"

Wang Ling hurriedly interrupted Greta's tense and persistent actions, clutching the knife and hiding behind the tent, nervously looking at the broken-down stairwell door sixty meters away.

Although the obstruction outside the door delayed the zombies' movements, two zombies rushed to the rooftop immediately, while at least four or five more zombies continued to fight against the obstruction!
The two zombies rushed towards the megaphone immediately, then sprinted to the megaphone and attacked it by ramming and shoving it!
Then, three or four more zombies emerged from the obstacles and rushed to the loudspeaker to attack.

Seeing that the loudspeaker was effective, Wang Ling swallowed hard, trying to calm herself down.

On the plane, with about 1,100 meters of altitude remaining, Gavin gripped the cabin door handle, nervously watching the zombies rushing out of the stairwell.

At this moment, there are already more than ten zombies on the roof, and the number is still increasing!

Just as Gavin was worrying, Paul leaned down and looked up at the rooftop, nervously speaking to Gavin.

"Boss, they have a megaphone!"

“Yeah, that thing can save them for a while, but it can also shake off more zombies from the helicopter's pull. We have to hurry, I'm worried the megaphone won't hold up... Fuck…”

Before Gavin could finish speaking, the heavily attacked megaphone was pushed and shoved by the zombies, falling from the rooftop.

Immediately afterwards, the zombies gathered around the megaphone began to frantically survey their surroundings, while the zombies that were still rushing towards the megaphone changed direction and began to run wildly across the rooftop.

The route taken by two of the zombies happened to be the same location where the survivors were, a discovery that made Gavin frown.

Meanwhile, on the rooftop, they saw two lone zombies charging towards them, even though they were well-hidden.

Wang Ling couldn't help but take a deep breath, raised her hand to press Greta's shoulder, nodded heavily, and then rushed out from the hiding place with her knife in hand!

Upon hearing Wang Ling's footsteps, the zombie immediately changed direction, shifting its attention from its original location to the direction Wang Ling was running.

Seeing the zombies rushing up behind her, Wang Ling suddenly stopped, turned around, raised her samurai sword high, and cleaved it with all her might.

"Drink!!!"

After a shout, the samurai sword slashed straight into the neck of a zombie.

Wang Ling then drew her sword and took a step back, quickly extending her arms to thrust the sword forward, plunging the tip of the katana deep into the eye socket of another zombie!
