Doomsday America

Chapter 39 Where did that tractor sound come from?

Chapter 39 Where did that tractor sound come from?
After speaking, Gavin smiled at everyone, trying his best to suppress the unease in their hearts.

He then turned around, raised his binoculars, and began to observe the situation in Koscana more closely.

The city of Costa has highways leading in six directions.

First, there's the highway where Gavin is located, which leads to Dallas on one end and Houston on the other.

Secondly, Gavin's next destination was Highway 283, which leads to Chambers Reservoir and Richards Nature Park, passes through Gavin's family farm, and extends to Palestine.

The remaining two roads lead to Taylor and Waco, both of which are larger cities than Costa Rica.

The last route is located west of Costa Rica, leading directly to Hillsborough, from where you can transfer to Dallas or Austin, the Texas capital.

Because Costa is positioned as a logistics transit city, a large area along the highway connecting the eastern part of Costa is a logistics warehousing center.

Meanwhile, the warehouse center area is also connected to the Costa Rica train station, which is the area in the city where the fire is currently taking place...

Gavin looked closely at the explosion site; by then, zombies had already completely surrounded the blast area.

But what made Gavin's scalp tingle was that even though the zombies on the outer edge of the zombie encirclement were still being attracted by the faint sound of explosions, they kept pushing towards the explosion point.

But the closer they got to the center of the explosion, the less aggressively the zombies became.

Even the zombies closest to the explosion zone, some as close as thirty meters away, not only didn't continue forward, but actively avoided the shockwaves and flames of the explosion and began to try to retreat!

The explosion zone at this moment is like a walled city. The zombies on the outermost edge want to get closer to it, while the zombies that are closest want to stay away from it!
This discovery made Gavin swallow hard.

He could basically conclude that the zombies possessed some biological instincts.

Zombies do not rely solely on their auditory system to hunt.

If zombies didn't have sight, they should have mindlessly rushed towards the explosion point and perished along with the burning oil tanker and other vehicles!
But this scene only proves that zombies prioritize hearing to capture targets, and as they get closer to their auditory targets, they will continue to rely on their remaining vision to complete the dual sensory lock-on of their prey!
In this light, Eugene and William were incredibly lucky back then.

Zombies have eyesight; they just didn't notice Eugene and William!

Now that the zombies have determined that the train explosion zone is not their desired target, they must also possess the biological instinct to seek advantage and avoid harm in order to move away from the explosion zone!

And the instinct to seek advantage and avoid harm, and biological instincts...

Damn it, this is no good!
Gavin let out a heavy sigh. The zombies he was encountering were unlike any he had ever seen in any zombie movies or TV shows!
Based on the information he currently has, Gavin has to admit that the zombies he's encountered are like a combination of the movies World War Z and I Am Legend!

Although the zombies here appear to be just dead people, they seem to have turned into animals.

An animal that is agile, energetic, fearless of injury, and whose intelligence is close to zero, but is still driven by biological instincts!

For a moment, Gavin's hand gripping the binoculars tightened involuntarily.

He kept reminding himself not to think about anything too far away, but to focus on his current core needs!

After a few seconds of quiet contemplation, Gavin finally pulled himself out of his nightmarish reverie and continued to observe the path the team was about to take.

After looking around several times in the direction of the road, Gavin put down his binoculars, turned his back to the crowd, and adjusted his expression.

Feeling he wouldn't reveal any emotion, Gavin smiled, turned around, and said while holding the binoculars.

"I have good news to share with everyone. Although there was an unexpected chain-reaction train collision and explosion in Costa Rica, the train explosion did not damage the ring road overpass!"

Gavin raised his hand and pointed to the elevated bridge stretching into the distance, then continued speaking.

"Next, we will try to move along the ring road and never go near the city center."

"Although the route we need to take passes through the railway explosion zone, as you can see, it's an overpass, and the explosion occurred below the road!"

"We just need to cross the viaduct as quickly as possible, go around the east side of Costa to the west of the city, and we'll reach the next key location!"

At this point, Gavin spread the map on the road and squatted down to point it out to everyone.

Winnie wanted to crouch down and take a look, but Madison alone took up a large space, and if Eugene and the silent William squeezed in, there would be no room left for her.

So Winnie made a face at the backs of Madison and the others as they crouched down, and then took her mother's hand and waited by the side.

At the same time, Gavin raised his hand and pointed to the west of Costa Rica on the map, saying...

"The road ahead requires going around halfway around the city of Costa Rica. You can't see it with binoculars here, so I'll point it out to you on the map."

"After passing through the explosion zone via the overpass, we drove for about 4.5 kilometers and finally left the overpass at the Chengxi roundabout."

"That's the outskirts of the business district in Cossica, also known as the rich area, lined with all kinds of cinemas, hotels, clothing stores and restaurants."

"But the key point is that there are not many densely populated residential areas there. It's an affluent area, characterized by its vast land, sparse population, beautiful environment, and extremely high cost of living."

"I can't rely solely on maps, so we'll have to wait until we reach the elevated roundabout to make a decision."

At this point, Gavin turned around and pointed to the explosion zone.

"guys."

He smiled and said, "At three in the morning, it's not a time when half the city is packed with office workers. You can see with the naked eye that there are only a few overturned or parked vehicles on the road ahead, not a single zombie in sight."

"Obviously, the zombies on the overpass were also drawn off the bridge by the explosion. We're really lucky, haha~"

Amid the laughter, Gavin put away the map and then went to the Tyrannosaurus Rex.

Finally, Gavin waved to everyone and said.

"If there's nothing else, let's set off immediately."

"no problem!"

Madison nodded matter-of-factly, while Eugene glanced suspiciously through the binoculars before nodding in agreement.

"I'll do whatever you say. We should go to the big farm and enjoy a peaceful retirement!"

After he finished speaking, everyone got into their cars and followed the Tyrannosaurus Rex along the overpass.

On the way, Gavin maintained a speed of about 70 kilometers per hour and encountered no obstacles before arriving above the explosion zone.

Upon arriving here, Gavin pondered for a moment but ultimately did not stop to observe.

The Costa Viaduct is only nine to ten meters above the ground. When people drive over it, the zombies below are inevitably attracted and roar as they try to chase the cars.

However, the zombies in the explosion zone were too dense, and even if some zombies wanted to chase, it would be difficult for them to get past the obstacles formed by the other zombies.

Moreover, the constant burning sounds and occasional small explosions from the blast zone kept the zombies distracted, preventing them from focusing on Gavin's two vehicles.

At this point, Gavin had completely crossed the explosion zone and was heading towards the roundabout in the wealthy western part of the city.

As they approached the roundabout, Gavin slowed down and stopped, looking into the distance.

This roundabout requires driving around it twice, spiraling down a height difference of nearly nine meters, before you can finally turn onto the highway.

The point where the roundabout merges with the road is a full 180 meters away from the roundabout itself.

The only problem is that the roundabout merges with the highway right in front of the cinema and hotel, and there are a dozen or so zombies wandering around there.

Next, the road cuts straight through the wealthy neighborhood, meaning Gavin and his group would have to pass through that area as well.

Having assessed the situation in the distance, Gavin left the Tyrannosaurus Rex and went to the roadside, where he leaned against the guardrail to observe his surroundings.

Looking ahead, we are less than 240 meters from the affluent area.

Looking down, there is still a nine-meter height difference between the elevated road and the ground, and there are only three elevated road support pillars nearby.

Then, he looked back at the explosion zone where zombies had gathered.

This place is at least two kilometers away from the explosion zone; the gunshots couldn't reach there at all.

After a moment, Gavin had an idea.

So, when Madison got out of the car and came to Gavin's side, Madison was surprised to find...

Gavin swiftly pulled out his Colt Python and raised the muzzle high.

boom!
After the gunshot, the zombies in the wealthy area became agitated and rushed towards Gavin.

Sure enough, since this place was quite far from the explosion zone, there were still quite a few zombies that weren't attracted by the blast. Gavin estimated that at least four or five hundred zombies had rushed out of the wealthy area.

Seeing this, Madison quickly came up behind Gavin and asked.

"Gavin, you're going to lure all the zombies from the rich neighborhood under the overpass, then we'll rush down the overpass along the roundabout and drive right through the rich neighborhood, right?"

"Otherwise, there aren't many zombies in the wealthy area anyway, so they won't have a chance to climb up the overpass along the roundabout. As long as we lure the zombies out of the wealthy area, the zombies gathered under the overpass will pose no threat to us."

After responding with one sentence, Gavin fired two more shots.

boom!
boom!
Rat-a-tat-tat-tat!!!
"Ok?"

Gavin was taken aback. He had only fired two shots, so where did this tractor sound come from?

and many more?

"Holy crap, who's shooting? Quick, get behind the car!"

Before Gavin could even observe the direction of the gunshot, he yelled at the crowd.

At the same time, he himself leaped to hide at the rim of the Tyrannosaurus Rex's front wheel.

Not far away, Eugene ran towards Gavin with wide eyes, cursing loudly as he did so.

"Oh shit, there are still people living in that rich neighborhood, and they're even using modified Scar-PDWs! What a son of a bitch rich guy!"
