Chapter 399 31 Palme d'Or Re-winning Plans and New Film Preparations

Yang Guangming spent his days on Hong Kong Island in a leisurely yet fulfilling manner.

During the day, he would accompany Chen Hong to the film set, or the two would stroll around the streets and sample local delicacies on Hong Kong Island. In the evenings, they would either take a walk along Victoria Harbour or watch movies and chat in Chen Hong's apartment.

Time together always flies by. Yang Guangming originally planned to stay on Hong Kong Island for a week before returning to Beijing to prepare for his new project.

On Monday morning, Yang Guangming was packing his luggage in his hotel room when his phone rang.

The caller ID showed Charles Rosen.

Yang Guangming was somewhat surprised. Since their parting at Cannes, he and Charles had kept in touch via email, but mostly it was routine communication about the North American release progress of "A Separation." Charles rarely called directly, especially at this time—it should be past nine o'clock in the evening in New York.

"Chuck, good evening," Yang Guangming answered the phone, greeting him in English.

“Yang, good evening. No, it should be morning where you are.” Charles’s voice sounded a little urgent, with the faint sound of car horns in the background. “I’m sorry to bother you at this time, but I have something very important to discuss with you.”

"It's okay, go ahead."

“It’s not convenient to talk about this over the phone; it’s a rather complicated matter.” Charles paused. “If possible, I would like to meet with you in person to discuss this. This is related to the future development of ‘A Separation’ and our future collaboration.”

Yang Guangming raised an eyebrow. Charles's tone was unusually serious.

"I'm on Hong Kong Island right now, is it convenient for you to come over?" Yang Guangming asked. "Or should I fly to New York?"

“Hong Kong Island is great, I’ll fly there,” Charles said immediately. “I’ll make the arrangements, and we can leave as early as today. We’ll meet on Hong Kong Island; you can choose the specific location.”

"So urgent?"

“Yes, it’s very urgent.” There was a suppressed excitement in Charles’s voice. “Yang, this could be a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. If we can seize it, it will be a huge help for the international debut of your next film.”

After a moment's thought, Yang Guangming agreed: "Okay, then come over. I'll have someone book a hotel for you. Call me when you arrive."

“No need for that, I can book the hotel myself,” Charles said. “But I would appreciate it if you could pick me up from the airport. I’d like to see you as soon as possible and start talking.”

"No problem, send me your flight information and I'll come pick you up."

Hanging up the phone, Yang Guangming stared at his phone, a flicker of curiosity rising within him. Charles wasn't the type to make a fuss over nothing; what exactly was this "once-in-a-lifetime opportunity" he was talking about?
He sent Duan Yunfeng a text message, asking him to keep an eye on Charles's possible flight information and to reserve a car for him to pick him up at the airport the next day. Then, he continued packing his luggage, but his mind was no longer on it.

In the afternoon, Yang Guangming and Chen Hong were having lunch at a tea restaurant when they mentioned that Charles was coming.

"Charles? Is that the president of Fox Searchlight?" Chen Hong asked.

“Yes, he said he had something important to discuss in person and couldn’t talk about it over the phone.” Yang Guangming took a sip of his milk tea. “Judging from his tone, it must be something important.”

Chen Hong thought for a moment: "Could it be related to the Oscars? There's still some time before awards season, but the public relations work should have already started."

“Possibly,” Yang Guangming nodded. “But he flew here specifically for more than just Oscar PR.”

"So you're going to postpone your trip back to Beijing?"

“Yes, let’s postpone it for a few days. We’ll leave after we finish talking with Charles.” Yang Guangming looked at Chen Hong, “It’ll be good to spend a few more days with you.”

Chen Hong smiled: "I would like you to stay a few more days, but don't let it interfere with important business. Charles flew here specifically for something important."

"I know." Yang Guangming held her hand. "Don't worry, I know what I'm doing."

At 3 p.m. the next day, Yang Guangming appeared on time at the arrival gate of Hong Kong Island International Airport.

He was dressed casually today, in a white T-shirt and light-colored jeans, wearing a baseball cap, looking like an ordinary college student. But his upright posture and composed demeanor still drew attention from many people.

Duan Yunfeng stood beside him and said in a low voice, "Charles' flight just landed, he should be out in about twenty minutes."

"Hmm." Yang Guangming nodded, his gaze fixed on the exit.

About twenty-five minutes later, Charles Rosen appeared at the end of the passage.

He was pushing a black carry-on suitcase, wearing a light gray casual suit, his face showing the fatigue of a long flight, but his eyes were still sharp. Seeing Yang Guangming, he immediately smiled and quickened his pace to approach.

"Yang!" Charles opened his arms and gave Yang Guangming a warm hug. "Long time no see!"

"Chuck, welcome to Hong Kong Island." Sunshine patted him on the back. "How was your trip?"

"It's alright, it just took a bit long." Charles released his hand and shook hands with Duan Yunfeng again. "Duan, it's nice to see you again."

"Mr. Charles, welcome," Duan Yunfeng greeted politely.

The three chatted as they walked out. The car that Yang Guangming had arranged was already waiting at the door; it was a black Mercedes-Benz S-Class sedan.

After getting on the bus, Charles looked out at the Hong Kong Island street scene and exclaimed, "The last time I came to Hong Kong Island was five years ago. It has changed so much."

“Hong Kong Island has developed very rapidly in recent years,” Yang Guangming said. “I’ve booked a suite for you at the Peninsula Hotel. Shall I take you there to rest for a bit?”

“No, no need to rest.” Charles turned to look at Yang Guangming. “Yang, let’s get right to it. This is important, and I don’t want to waste time.”

Yang Guangming was somewhat surprised: "You just got off the plane, aren't you tired?"

“I slept on the plane,” Charles shook his head. “And this whole thing is so exciting, I can’t sleep at all.”

Yang Guangming and Duan Yunfeng exchanged a glance and nodded: "Okay, let's talk in the hotel room. It's quiet there and convenient."

The car drove toward the Peninsula Hotel on Hong Kong Island.

On the way, Charles briefly inquired about Yang Guangming's situation on Hong Kong Island and also discussed the initial promotional plans for "A Separation" in North America. However, Yang Guangming could sense that Charles's mind was clearly not on this; he was waiting for a more suitable place to talk.

The Peninsula Hotel is one of the most prestigious hotels on Hong Kong Island. Sunshine Ming booked a sea-view suite for Charles, with a spacious living room facing Victoria Harbour and offering excellent views.

The waiter brought Charles's luggage to the room, along with tea, snacks, and fruit. Yang Guangming asked Duan Yunfeng to wait in the living room while he and Charles went into the suite's reception room and closed the door.

The two sat down facing each other on the sofa.

Charles cut to the chase: "Yang, I'm here for two main reasons. The first is about the Oscar campaign for 'A Separation,' which we'll discuss in more detail later. The second, and most important, is about your next film."

Yang Guangming sat up straight: "Please speak."

“First, I’d like to ask you, has the next movie started production? Is there a rough timeline?” Charles asked.

"The script is already being conceived, but it hasn't been finalized yet," Yang Guangming answered honestly. "As for filming, I plan to start before the end of the year. I'm still studying at the Beijing Film Academy, so I need to balance my studies."

Charles nodded, then asked, "If there's a suitable film festival next year, like Cannes, are you confident you can compete again with a new film?"

Yang Guangming was taken aback: "Go to Cannes again next year?"

“Yes, and we’re aiming for the top awards.” Charles’s eyes burned with fervor. “Yang, have you ever thought about the impact it would have if you could win major awards at Cannes two years in a row, or even win the Palme d’Or twice?”

Yang Guangming was silent for a few seconds, then slowly shook his head: "Chuck, this idea is bold, but not very realistic. My film just won the Palme d'Or this year. If I go again next year, even if the quality is no worse than this year, it will be difficult for the jury to give me the top prize again. This is not a matter of quality, but a matter of rules and balance."

“You’re right, under normal circumstances, it’s almost impossible.” Charles leaned forward and lowered his voice. “But what if the circumstances are special? What if the jury is specially composed? What if we’ve made ample preparations beforehand?”

Yang Guangming looked at Charles and read a certain confidence in his eyes.

"What do you mean?" Yang Guangming asked.

Charles took a deep breath and began to explain in detail: "Yang, the jury president for next year's Cannes Film Festival has been basically decided. It's Francis Ford Coppola."

Yang Guangming's eyes widened slightly.

Francis Ford Coppola, director of The Godfather trilogy, is one of the greatest directors in film history. If he were to serve as president of the jury, it would undoubtedly have a significant impact on the selection results.

"Is the information accurate?" Yang Guangming asked.

“Ninety percent,” Charles said with certainty. “The Cannes organizing committee has extended a formal invitation to Coppola, and he has agreed in principle. The official announcement may be released at the end of the year, but it’s already circulating in the industry.”

Sunshine nodded, waiting for Charles to continue.

“Coppola’s reputation and status mean he has a lot of influence on the jury,” Charles continued. “If he supports a film, its chances of winning an award increase significantly.”

"But why would Coppola support my film?" Yang Guangming asked rhetorically. "I have no connection with him, I've never even met him."

Charles laughed: "That's the key point I wanted to make. Coppola's daughter, Sofia Coppola, is also a director, have you heard of her?"

Yang Guangming nodded: "I know, she has made some short films."

“Yes, Sofia is preparing her first feature film.” Charles’s smile became meaningful. “The investors in this film are Fox Searchlight and Warner Bros. I was one of the main driving forces behind it.”

Yang Guangming immediately understood.

"Did you help Coppola's daughter get the investment?" he asked.

“To be precise, I was the one who brought this project to fruition,” Charles said. “Sofia is very talented, and we felt her script had great potential after evaluating it. Of course, Coppola’s influence also played a part.”

He paused, then continued, “In return, I had a private conversation with Coppola. I recommended you to him, introducing him to ‘A Separation’ and your situation. He watched the film and appreciated it. We reached an understanding—if you bring a new film to Cannes next year, as long as the film is of high quality and doesn’t cause too much controversy, he will support you.”

Charles made some embellishments, and Coppola agreed to support the films he recommended, but not necessarily the bright and cheerful ones.

Yang Guangming's heart started beating faster.

Coppola's support is indeed a huge bargaining chip.

“But that’s not enough.” Yang Guangming remained calm. “Even if Coppola supports it, what about the other jury members? The Cannes jury has nine members, and a majority vote is required.”

“That’s the second thing I need to do,” Charles said. “With a year to go, I’m confident I can win the support of at least two or three judges. In fact, I’ve already started contacting a few potential judges.”

He looked at Yang Ming with sincere eyes: "Yang, this is not bribery or an improper transaction. Film festival public relations is an art in itself. We let influential judges see your film in advance, understand your talent, and establish a good impression. When it comes to the selection, they will naturally tend to support the works they appreciate."

Yang Guangming understands this operating method. In the film industry, especially in film festival awards, public relations is an indispensable part. Public relations plays a significant role, but the quality of the film is always the most important factor.

"So what's your plan?" Yang Guangming guessed. "If I can produce a high-quality film for next year's Cannes, are you confident you can make it win major awards, or even retain the Palme d'Or?"

“Yes,” Charles nodded vigorously. “And it’s not just the Palme d’Or. If the film is good enough and the actors perform well, we can also compete for Best Director, Best Screenplay, and even acting awards. Coppola’s influence extends beyond the top awards; his appeal to the jury can influence the selection of all other awards.”

Yang Guangming leaned back on the sofa, lost in thought.

This offer is too tempting.

Winning the Palme d'Or at Cannes for the second consecutive year is an extremely rare achievement in film history. If he can truly accomplish this, it will be a landmark event for him personally and for Chinese cinema.

However, the risks are also significant. If the film's quality is insufficient, or if there are disagreements within the jury, it may end up with nothing. Moreover, relying on public relations efforts inherently carries uncertainty.

"Chuck, I need to confirm a few things," Yang Guangming said earnestly.

"Excuse me."

"First, how reliable is Coppola's promise? Given the tacit understanding they've built up in private, could things change when it comes to the actual selection process?"

Charles thought for a moment and replied, “Coppola is an artist who values commitment. And it’s a win-win situation for him too. If the young directors he supports win consecutive awards, it will become a celebrated story during his tenure as jury president. Of course, the premise is that your film is of high quality. If the film itself is controversial or clearly unqualified, he will not force his support.”

"Secondly, are you truly confident in securing the support of the other judges?"

"At the moment, it seems at least 70%." Charles was very frank. "I've already contacted three judges, and they are all interested in Asian and Chinese films. The important thing is that there will be direct or indirect collaborations. Two of them have seen 'A Separation' and gave it high praise. As long as your new film is of high quality, the possibility of them supporting you is very high."

"Third, if it doesn't succeed in the end, will there be any negative impact? For example, will it be seen as excessive public relations, or will it offend the judging panel?"

Charles laughed: "Yang, you've thought this through very well. But I must say, Cannes' public relations efforts are more common than you think. Almost all competitive films do similar work, just to varying degrees. As long as we don't go too far or cross the line, there won't be any problems. Besides, even if we don't win the top prize in the end, just being nominated for the main competition is already a victory in itself."

Yang Guangming nodded and continued to think.

Charles looked at him and added, “Yang, this is a really rare opportunity. Coppola is the president of the jury, and I have the means to get in touch with him—it’s a perfect storm of circumstances. Who knows when we’ll get another chance like this? If you can achieve great success at Cannes for two consecutive years, the boost to your career will be immeasurable.”

“I understand.” Yang Guangming was well aware of the importance of this opportunity.

He stood up, walked to the window, and looked at the view of Victoria Harbour. The afternoon sun shone on the sea, making it sparkle, and cruise ships shuttled back and forth.

A few minutes later, he turned around and looked at Charles.

“Chuck, I accept this plan,” Yang Guangming decided. “I will take my new film to Cannes next year.”

Charles smiled broadly: "Great! I knew you'd make the right choice."

“But I have a few conditions.” Yang Guangming walked back to the sofa and sat down.

"You said."

"First, I will not rush to make a film just to participate in the competition, nor will I change my original creative intention to cater to the jury. If I feel that the film is not good enough by the time it is submitted, I will withdraw from the competition."

“Of course, that’s the basic principle,” Charles said solemnly. “I also hope your film is of high quality, so that it will be legitimate to operate in this way.”

"Second, public relations operations must be moderate. You need to be careful about the degree of intervention, and you cannot interfere with my creative process. After the film is completed, the publicity and public relations can be handed over to you, but the creative process must be led by me."

"Completely agree. You're the director; creative freedom is the most important thing."

“Third,” Yang Guangming looked at Charles, “I think we need closer cooperation. Not just for this new film, but also for future projects. If you agree, we can establish a long-term strategic partnership, and there will be many more possibilities in the future.”

Charles's eyes lit up: "Yang, this is exactly what I'm looking for. Fox Searchlight is a new company, and we need talented directors and partners who can consistently produce excellent work. You are the director I have the most faith in, without a doubt."

The two smiled at each other.

“Now let’s talk about specific film plans,” Charles asked. “You already have an idea for your next film, could you share it with me? I need to assess whether it’s suitable for Cannes.”

Yang Guangming nodded and began to explain his ideas, "My next feature film is tentatively titled 'Love'."

He explained the screenwriting concept in detail: An elderly music professor couple, the wife suddenly suffers a stroke, leaving her paralyzed on one side and unable to care for herself. The husband decides to take care of her himself, but as time goes on, her condition worsens, and both of them endure immense mental and physical stress. Ultimately, the husband makes a difficult decision…

"This is a story about love, dignity, and death," Yang Guangming summarized. "It explores the nature of love when it faces illness, aging, and death. It's very profound, and also very cruel."

Charles listened intently.

“This subject matter…” he pondered, “is indeed very suitable for Cannes. Humanistic concerns, the true meaning of love, moral dilemmas, and the exploration of the essence of life—these are all themes that Cannes favors. Moreover, I think this film is more universal than ‘A Separation’ and can better transcend cultural differences to move international audiences.”

“That’s what I think too,” Yang Guangming agreed.

"So, when will the script be finished?" Charles asked.

"I already have a first draft of the adaptation, and I will complete it as soon as I get back to Beijing."

“Great!” Charles exclaimed excitedly. “Yang, you always surprise me. So, how about we arrange it like this: you finish the script as soon as possible and start pre-production. I'll start public relations preparations simultaneously, contact potential judges, and build relationships. After the film is finished, we'll see the quality of the completed film and then decide whether to go all out for Cannes.”

“Okay,” Yang Guangming agreed. “If the final product isn’t good enough, I’ll tell you honestly. I won’t send a subpar film into the competition, so you can rest assured about that.”

“I trust your judgment,” Charles said earnestly. “Besides, with your talent and dedication to art, I don’t think you’ll make a mediocre film.”

After discussing the new film plans, Charles moved on to the second matter.

“Now let’s talk about the Oscar plans for ‘A Separation’.” Charles took a document out of his briefcase. “This is our preliminary award-winning strategy. Take a look.”

Yang Guangming took the document and carefully read through it.

Fox Searchlight devised a detailed Oscar campaign plan for "A Separation," with clear goals: at least a nomination for Best Foreign Language Film and a chance to win it; at the same time, nominations for Best Director and Best Original Screenplay.

The plan details a schedule from September to March of next year, including North American releases, public relations for the Critics' Circle Awards, contacts with the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (Golden Globes), and special screenings for Academy members. "We need you to be in the US for some events at key times," Charles said. "Mainly the Critics' Circle Awards season in November, and around the time of the Oscar nominations announcement in January. Of course, it would be best if you could participate in all of them, but I know you have school, so we'll try to compress the time and only schedule the most important events."

Looking at the densely packed schedule, Yang Guangming asked, "Approximately how many days will it take?"

“If you only attend the core events, it will be about two or three times, each lasting three to five days,” Charles said sincerely. “I will arrange it personally to ensure it doesn’t take up too much of your time. But these events are very important; Academy members need to see the director in person and hear his creative ideas. This is crucial for winning votes.”

Yang Guangming nodded understandingly. Ultimately, Oscar voting is a matter of personal votes, and interpersonal relationships and first impressions certainly influence the results.

“I can participate,” he said, “but the time needs to be coordinated in advance so that it doesn’t conflict with my studies.”

“No problem, we’ll plan ahead.” Charles put away the documents. “Yang, I’m very optimistic about the Oscar prospects for ‘A Separation.’ With the Palme d’Or, your personal buzz, and the quality of the film itself, we have a great chance. Of course, the competition is strong, but at least a nomination is guaranteed.”

The two discussed some details, including the film's North American release date being set for October, coinciding with awards season, as well as the design of promotional materials and arrangements for media interviews.

The conversation lasted for more than two hours. By the time it ended, dusk had fallen outside the window, and Victoria Harbour was ablaze with lights.

"Chuck, let's have dinner together," Yang Guangming invited. "There are some good restaurants on Hong Kong Island. I'll take you to try some authentic Cantonese cuisine."

Charles glanced at his watch and shook his head regretfully. "Thank you, Yang, but I have to catch my flight back to New York tonight. I have a ton of work to do at the company."

"So rushed? You just arrived."

“That’s work,” Charles said with a wry smile. “I’ve turned down several meetings for this meeting. Now that things are done, I have to get back and take care of the rest.”

Yang Guangming nodded understandingly: "Then I'll take you to the airport."

“No need to trouble yourself, just have your driver take me.” Charles stood up and shook hands with Yang Guangming. “Yang, it was a very pleasant meeting today. I am full of confidence in our cooperation.”

“Me too,” Yang Guangming said sincerely. “Have a safe trip, Chuck. Keep in touch.”

"must."

After seeing Charles off, Yang Guangming returned to his suite. Duan Yunfeng was still waiting in the living room.

"Are you done talking?" Duan Yunfeng asked.

"Hmm." Yang Guangming sat down on the sofa and rubbed his temples. "Yunfeng, we need to adjust our schedule for returning to Beijing. We need to move up the preparations for the new movie."

He briefly recounted his conversation with Charles to Duan Yunfeng, including the plan to win Cannes again and the arrangements for the Oscars.

After listening, Duan Yunfeng remained silent for a few seconds before saying, "Guangming, this opportunity is indeed rare, but the pressure is also immense. To compete for the Cannes Grand Prix for two consecutive years is unprecedented, both domestically and internationally."

“I know, but it’s precisely because there’s no precedent that it’s worth trying.”

When do you plan to start preparing for your new movie?

"As soon as possible." Yang Guangming already had arrangements. "I'll go back to Beijing tomorrow. First, help me contact Teacher Xie Fei. I want to show him the script. Then, contact Director Han Sanping to discuss the collaboration. For the male and female leads, I've tentatively decided on Teacher Lan Tianye and Teacher Qin Yi."

"Should we also get in touch with Teacher Lan Tianye and Teacher Qin Yi beforehand?"

“No rush.” Yang Guangming thought for a moment. “We’ll formally invite them once the script is perfected. These two teachers are veteran artists; we need to impress them with our work, not with personal connections or pay. We need to give them the necessary respect.”

Duan Yunfeng nodded: "Understood."

That evening, Yang Guangming had dinner with Chen Hong and told her that he was going back to Beijing early.

Chen Hong was somewhat surprised, but after hearing the reason, she expressed her understanding.

“This is a big deal, you should go back and prepare as soon as possible,” she said. “But don’t push yourself too hard, take care of your health. You’re only seventeen, don’t push yourself too hard.”

"Don't worry, I know what I'm doing." Yang Guangming held her hand. "But you, be careful while filming in Hong Kong. Call me anytime if anything happens."

"I will," Chen Hong said with a gentle smile. "When your new movie starts filming, I'll visit the set if the time is right."

"Okay, it's a deal."

The next morning, Yang Guangming and Duan Yunfeng boarded a flight to Beijing.

On the plane, Yang Guangming began revising the adapted script of "Love".

This film was already in his shooting plans, but the timing was brought forward. He actually had a complete concept for a long time, and even went through it repeatedly in his mind during Cannes.

What he needs to do now is to put these ideas into words and create a script that can be filmed.

The key to adaptation lies in localization.

The original story of "Love" takes place in Paris, and the main characters are a retired music professor couple. Yang Guangming wants to move the setting to Beijing, and the characters will also need to be adjusted accordingly.

He decided to portray the male lead as a retired Peking Opera performer and the female lead as a retired piano teacher. This way, the musical elements of the original version could be preserved while incorporating traditional Chinese culture. The contrast between Peking Opera and piano could also symbolize the clash between tradition and modernity, East and West.

The themes of illness and care are largely preserved, as they form the core of the story.

However, the role of children in Chinese families needs to be strengthened. In the original version, the daughter is just a supporting character who appears occasionally. In the adapted version, Yang Guangming wants to set the daughter as an important character. Her relationship with her parents and her attitude towards her father's decisions can enrich the layers of the story.

Yang Guangming rapidly typed on the keyboard on his computer, his thoughts flowing like a spring.

Duan Yunfeng sat beside him, watching Yang Guangming work intently, and felt a sense of感慨 (gǎnkǎi, a complex emotion encompassing both admiration and reflection).

This seventeen-year-old has just made history by winning China's second Palme d'Or, and now he's aiming for even higher goals. This spirit of never being satisfied and constantly challenging himself is perhaps the key to his success.

When the plane landed at the Capital Airport, Yang Guangming had already finished writing the first act of the script.

Back at the courtyard house, Wu Fang had already prepared a meal. Yang Guangming ate a little something and then went into his study to continue writing his script.

For the next two days, he stayed home almost the entire time, devoting himself to perfecting the script.

The first draft of the script was completed on July 15th.

Yang Guangming printed out three copies: one for Duan Yunfeng's archives, one for Teacher Xie Fei, and one for Han Sanping.

He called Xie Fei first.

"Teacher, this is Guangming. I have a new script I'd like you to take a look at. Are you available now?"

Xie Fei on the other end of the phone readily agreed: "It's convenient. Come to the school; I'll be in my office."

With the script in hand, Yang Guangming drove to the Beijing Film Academy.

The campus was quieter than usual; it was summer vacation and most students had already left. But Yang Guangming's appearance still attracted the attention of some students who remained on campus. Many recognized him, pointing and whispering among themselves from a distance.

Yang Guangming paid no attention and walked straight towards the directing department office building.

Xie Fei's office door was open, and he was reading a book. Seeing Yang Guangming, he put down his book, smiled, and waved, "Guangming, come in and sit down. Why aren't you resting during summer vacation? Already working on a new script?"

"I had an idea, so I wrote it down." Yang Guangming sat down opposite Xie Fei and handed him the script. "Teacher, could you please take a look?"

Xie Fei took the script and saw the two simple words on the cover: "Love".

He turned to the first page and began to read.

Yang Guangming waited quietly, pouring himself a glass of water.

The office was quiet, save for the sound of Xie Fei turning the pages. Outside the window, cicadas chirped tirelessly in the sycamore trees.

Xie Fei read very slowly and carefully. Yang Guangming noticed that his expression changed from calm to serious, and then to solemn. When he read certain paragraphs, his brows would furrow slightly, and his fingers would unconsciously tap the table.

About forty minutes later, Xie Fei finished reading the last page.

He took off his glasses, rubbed his eyes, and remained silent for a long time.

"Teacher?" Yang Guangming asked softly.

Xie Fei raised his head, looking at Yang Guangming with a complicated expression.

“Guangming, your script…” he began slowly, “is very heavy, and very profound.”

"What do you think?"

“From an artistic point of view, it is more mature and more cruel than ‘A Separation’,” Xie Fei commented. “It does not explore moral dilemmas, but the essence of life and the form of love in extreme situations. This requires the director to have stronger control and a deeper understanding of life.”

He paused, then asked, "How did you come up with the idea to write such a story? It doesn't seem like a topic a seventeen-year-old would be interested in."

Yang Guangming had prepared the answer early on: "In Cannes, I met an elderly French director. He talked to me about aging and death, and about his experience of taking care of his sick wife. I was deeply moved, and after returning, I kept thinking about this issue, feeling that this subject matter could be adapted into a Chinese story."

Xie Fei nodded: "You adapted this story you heard abroad very successfully. You completely localized the background, and the characters are believable. In particular, changing the male protagonist to a Peking Opera artist is a great idea. It has cultural characteristics and can also contrast with the female protagonist's piano playing."

"Thank you, teacher."

"However," Xie Fei changed the subject, "making this film was very difficult. First, there's the acting; the two veteran actors' performances had to be extremely precise—any more or less would be overdone, any less would be weak. Second, there's the pacing; this kind of film, which is mainly set indoors and has a lot of dialogue, would become dull if the pacing wasn't controlled well. Finally, there's the theme; such a heavy subject matter required careful consideration."

Yang Guangming listened attentively: "I've considered all of these. As for the acting, I'd like to invite teachers Lan Tianye and Qin Yi; I believe they can handle it. As for the pacing, I will strictly control it during filming."

Xie Fei picked up the script and flipped through it again: "I agree with this script in principle; it has great artistic value. But when do you plan to film it? Have you secured funding and a production company?"

"I plan to collaborate with Beijing Film Studio, and I'll talk to Director Han Sanping again. As for the timing, I hope to start filming as soon as possible, since I have time during the holidays and can still make it to next year's Cannes Film Festival."

Xie Fei was taken aback: "Cannes next year? You just won the Palme d'Or this year, and you're going again next year?"

“I’d like to give it a try.” Yang Guangming didn’t mention Charles’s operational plan, as that was a trade secret. “If the film is of good quality, why can’t it compete in consecutively?”

Xie Fei thought for a moment and smiled: "That's true. Cannes doesn't have a rule that you can't come back after winning the Palme d'Or. If you really have that ambition, I support you. But the pressure will be immense, the media will be watching you, and the jury will be using higher standards to judge your new film."

“I understand,” Yang Guangming said, “but I’m willing to accept the challenge.”

After leaving Xie Fei's office, Yang Guangming went to the Beijing Film Studio.

When Han Sanping heard that Yang Guangming had arrived, he personally went to the factory gate to greet him.

"Guangming! What brings you here?" Han Sanping was beaming, clearly still happy about the Palme d'Or. "Come on, let's go to my office. I have some good news to tell you."

The two arrived at Han Sanping's office. The secretary made tea, then left and closed the door.

"What good news?" Yang Guangming asked.

"The final domestic box office figures for 'A Separation' are in," Han Sanping said, pulling out a document. "Seventy-three million! That's even higher than we estimated!"

Yang Guangming took the document and glanced at it. Seventy-three million RMB was indeed an astonishing figure in 1995. Keep in mind, this was just an art film, without the stars and special effects of a commercial blockbuster, relying entirely on word-of-mouth and awards.

"Congratulations, Factory Director Han."

"Congratulations! Congratulations!" Han Sanping laughed heartily. "Beijing Film Studio has made a huge profit this time. Morale is high, and the leadership highly approves of our cooperation model. Guangming, you're now a major contributor to Beijing Film Studio!"

Yang Guangming smiled and got to the point: "Director Han, I've come here today to discuss cooperation on a new project."

Han Sanping's eyes lit up: "A new movie? You already have an idea?"

"Yes, the script is finished." Yang Guangming handed over another copy of the script. "Please take a look."

Han Sanping took the script and was somewhat surprised to see the title "Love." He quickly flipped through it, his expression gradually becoming serious.

After reading it, he remained silent for a while.

"The subject of 'Brightness'..." he carefully chose his words, "is very profound, but also very risky. Unlike 'A Separation,' it doesn't have a social topicality; it's more personal, more private, and more somber. The box office performance may not be too optimistic."

“I understand. But movies have more than just commercial value; they also have artistic value. I think this story is worth making.”

Han Sanping looked at Yang Guangming and suddenly laughed: "You really make me both love and worry. I love your talent and perseverance, but I worry that you always like to challenge yourself with high difficulty. But then again, without this spirit, you wouldn't have won the Palme d'Or."

He picked up the script and flipped through a few more pages: "What's the estimated production cost?"

"It won't be too high. The main setting is just an apartment, and there aren't many actors. The biggest expenses are the salaries of the two leads and the crew's wages. My initial estimate is that it should be under five million RMB. I'll set my director's fee higher this time, how about two million? After all, I'm a Palme d'Or director now."

“Sure, I have no objection. The filming budget is five million…” Han Sanping calculated, “Beijing Film Studio has plenty of funds now, so investing isn’t a problem. How about we take half of the investment?”

Han Sanping is mainly optimistic about the film's award prospects. As long as it wins an international award, even if it's not a big one, it will definitely recoup its costs.

“That’s too high, I can’t give you that much.” Yang Guangming decisively refused. “How about this, I have a suggestion: in addition to Beijing Film Studio and my Qiming Studio, I would also like to bring in Asian film companies from Hong Kong Island as investors for this film.”

"Asian films? The ones from Nansun Shi's side?"

Han Sanping certainly knew that Asian Films belonged to ATV in Hong Kong and was an asset of the Sunshine Ming family, but he did not point it out to them.

“Yes,” Yang Guangming explained, “This arrangement is for long-term consideration. Asian cinema will produce more Hong Kong films in the future, and if the subject matter is suitable, Beijing Film Studio can also participate in the investment and make them into co-productions for release in mainland China. This not only conforms to the instructions of higher-level leaders, but also creates higher profits for both parties, which can be considered a win-win situation.”

Han Sanping was a sensible man; he understood immediately.

“Co-productions are indeed a good direction.” He nodded. “Currently, Hong Kong films need to occupy import quotas to enter the mainland. If they are made into co-productions, they can be released directly after passing the review without occupying quotas. This is very attractive to Hong Kong filmmakers. Of course, if our Beijing Film Studio can invest, it would indeed be a win-win situation.”

“That’s exactly what I mean,” Yang Guangming said. “So I want to give Asian films a share of the investment in this movie to establish a preliminary foundation for cooperation.”

Han Sanping thought for a moment: "How should the investment ratio be determined?"

"My initial plan is: 20% from Beijing Film Studio, 50% from Qiming Studio, and 30% from Asian Film Studio," Yang Guangming said. "Of course, this is just a preliminary idea, and we can discuss the specifics further."

"Twenty percent..."

Han Sanping pondered for a moment and said, "Guangming, we've had such a pleasant cooperation, and the factory is fully supporting your project. This share is a bit too small."

Considering long-term cooperation in the future, even if it becomes a co-production, there are still many hurdles to overcome for Hong Kong films to pass censorship and be released in mainland China, making it very difficult.

My demands aren't high; a 30% share will suffice. That way, when future co-productions are released in mainland China, the studio can better explain things to its superiors.

Yang Guangming doesn't care about the gains or losses of this one film; he's planning for a long-term collaboration.

“Okay.” Yang Guangming readily agreed, “Then it will be 30% from Beijing Film Studio, 40% from Qiming Studio, and 30% from Asian Film Studio.”

Han Sanping laughed: "Great! It's settled then! I'll have someone draft the cooperation agreement right away."

"There's one more thing," Yang Guangming said. "Regarding the actors, I'd like to invite Mr. Lan Tianye and Ms. Qin Yi. Both of them are veteran artists. Although their fees won't be too high, they need to be given sufficient respect and communication."

“Lan Tianye and Qin Yi…” Han Sanping nodded, “They are indeed the best choices. However, these two teachers rarely act these days, so we need to work on them. In this way, I will invite them on behalf of the factory to make it seem more formal.”

"Then I'll have to trouble Director Han."

"No trouble at all, it's my pleasure," Han Sanping reminded him. "But Guangming, I must remind you that these two teachers are getting on in years, so the filming intensity can't be too high. Moreover, these emotionally heavy scenes are very taxing on the actors, so we need to pay attention to the pace during filming and take good care of their health."

"I understand, I will pay special attention."

After finishing their business, Han Sanping asked Yang Guangming about his plans for the follow-up promotion of "A Separation".

"In North America, Fox Searchlight has already developed an Oscar campaign plan," Yang Guangming explained briefly. "I need to find time to go to the United States for some events, but the specific dates haven't been set yet."

"An Oscar!" Han Sanping's eyes lit up again. "If we could win an Oscar, that would be perfect! Don't worry, I'll take care of things back home. If you need the factory's cooperation, just let me know."

"Thank you, Director Han." (End of Chapter)
