Chapter 113 Fenris's [Politeness]
Chapter 113 Fenris's [Politeness]
"Sir, the other party has sent a visual communication request. Should we answer it?" the captain asked cautiously, his voice breaking the tense atmosphere on the bridge.
Herbert went through an extremely intense internal struggle.
Connected? If these space wolves confirm that they are indeed the Inquisitors, will they immediately use the molten metal to board and ambush them?
Refuse to answer? But would these persistent space wolves give up just like that? Obviously not. Their warships have far superior firepower; refusing communication would only be seen as a provocation.
Finally, Herbert's tense jaw relaxed slightly, and he commanded in an almost inaudible voice, "Connect."
The signal was established, and the instant the faces of both sides appeared on the screen, Herbert heard a rough cheer coming from the other side's bridge.
"Brother Norl, you guessed right! The other party really is a judge!"
"Ha! I can smell the stench on these guys even through a vacuum!"
"You promised, I get an extra portion of the barbecue tonight!"
Herbert's anger surged like a volcano. These rude, barbaric Space Marines clearly showed no respect. Judging from their words, it seemed they were gambling with their own identities?
He took a deep breath, forcibly suppressing his surging anger, and spoke in a cold, formulaic tone: "I am Herbert Hernampold, Inquisitor of the Holy Hammer Order. I expect you to provide an explanation for suddenly stopping my flagship..."
“Hernampold,” the other person interrupted him rudely, calling him by his first name. The scarred, bearded face on the screen drew closer, and a pair of sharp eyes seemed to pierce through the screen. “What are you up to, sneaking around here like this?”
“First of all, I wasn’t acting suspiciously,” Herbert corrected, suppressing his anger, “All my actions have been conducted under the glorious light of the God-Emperor, and have been entirely aboveboard. Secondly, before asking questions, at least introduce yourself. It’s basic courtesy!”
"Haha..." The other party laughed disdainfully twice, and even spat to the side without any hesitation, "I am Krona Longdazed."
Krona paused, his beast-like eyes gleaming with malice. He grinned, revealing a provocative smile. "I've introduced myself now. How's that? Pretty polite, right? In return, shouldn't you invite us to sit on your ship?"
"impossible!"
Herbert's emotions instantly spiraled out of control; he even cracked his voice in agitation. Inviting these Fenris wolves onto his ship? He'd be found dead in his bedroom tonight, possibly "accidentally" cleaved in two by a chainsaw sword!
On the communication screen, Krona Long's scarred face broke into a playful smile. "'Impossible'?" he repeated slowly, as if savoring the word. "That's not polite, Hernangold. Could it be... that there's something shady going on on your ship?"
"This is a baseless accusation!" Herbert retorted loudly, clearly furious at the statement. "To accuse a loyal Inquisitor of corruption is a grave offense! I have destroyed countless gathering places of Chaos worshippers and saved dozens of worlds in the name of the Emperor!"
“Alright, alright.” Croner interrupted Herbert rudely again, idly picking his nose with a thick finger, as if Herbert’s impassioned self-defense was nothing but annoying noise. “So, Hernandez, what are you up to, sneaking around here like this?”
These words, like a bucket of ice water, instantly sobered Herbert. His duties as an inquisitor compelled him to resign. He regained his inquisitor's composure and replied coldly, "I'm going to Pedithia. That planet was once a major taxpayer in the sector, but it has been cut off from the Empire for thirty years. I'm going to restore its connection with the Empire and to investigate any potential rebellion… Unlike you, I have a duty to fulfill!"
This is Herbert subtly satirizing the Space Wolf's undisciplined and unruly behavior.
Croner clearly understood, but he didn't care at all. In fact, judging from his expression, he wasn't ashamed at all, but rather proud, and laughed smugly: "Hahaha, Mr. Hernangold, you're quite the busy man."
“Yes, I am very busy,” Herbert said coldly. “If you have nothing else to do, please make way.”
“No, something has suddenly come up.” Crona’s smile vanished, replaced by an undeniable resolve. He casually flicked away the object he’d dug out of his nose and stared at Herbert with his wolf-like eyes. “We’re going to Pedithia to quell any potential rebellion or alien invasion there.”
Upon hearing this, Herbert's heart sank completely.
He understood. These space wolves were after him. There were probably Imperial Navy patrol ships in the surrounding airspace, and they couldn't use force, so they planned to use this "escort" guise to go to Peditia with him. Once they reached that place, isolated from the world for thirty years, far from the reach of the emperor, there would be plenty of opportunities to manipulate things.
Herbert wondered if he were not an inquisitor of the Holy Hammer Order, but rather a heretical order or an alien-fighting order, would these space wolves be so persistent...?
The Order of the Holy Hammer, the Demon Inquisition. Their duty is to hunt down humanity's deepest fears—the demons of the Warp. This work has made them paranoid and suspicious, and has also given them much forbidden knowledge, making them a dangerous and unpredictable group in the eyes of all powers within the Imperium.
As for Space Wolf, he harbors a deep hatred for the entire Holy Hammer Order because of the "Moon of Shame" incident.
However, Herbert did not regret his choice to become an Inquisitor of the Holy Hammer Order. In any case, someone had to do the job of cleaning away the Chaos Corruption. It was not that he could not do it just because he was disliked and hated.
“Well,” Herbert said, “I have no reason to object to more forces going with me to Peditia… but I still think it’s a serious waste of resources, and you should go to places where there are clearly large-scale rebellions.”
