Chapter 124 Don't worry, I'm taking my medicine.
【BUG】Looking up at the sky.
It was a morbid sky, indescribable in its demeanor. A bizarre dome, a mixture of leaden gray, sulfurous yellow, and bruised purple. The sun had long since vanished, leaving only a pale patch of light, like the pupil of a dying man, gazing helplessly through thick clouds of radioactive dust at the ravaged earth below. The air was thick with the metallic stench and the smell of scorched earth; each breath felt like swallowing fine sand.
He then looked around at the battlefield.
This place has become a true wasteland of death. The earth has been repeatedly plowed by the energy of war and nuclear explosions, leaving behind scorched black soil and huge bomb craters everywhere. Twisted wreckage of war machines intertwined with the corpses of soldiers from both sides, piling up into small hills. The severed limbs of the Greenskins mingled with the tattered uniforms of the human Astronauts, creating a post-apocalyptic scene amidst the incessant clicking of the Geiger counter.
"It does have a bit of an apocalyptic-level battlefield feel to it..." BUG muttered under his breath.
Just then, a clear and urgent voice came from the communication system inside his helmet: "The green-skinned leader's location has been confirmed! Coordinates have been shared! Everyone, come over here immediately!"
This communication was clearly broadcast to all players in the Death Squad on the battlefield. In an instant, as if a dormant swarm of ants had been startled, players scattered throughout the battlefield rose from behind cover and amidst piles of corpses, surging towards the same coordinates like streams flowing into a river. BUG was naturally one of those who joined this torrent.
When he arrived at his destination, he found it already surrounded by players, layer upon layer. On a hill made of tank wreckage stood one player. Although his armor appeared identical to the others, his communications system could reach thousands, clearly indicating he was one of the commanders of the operation.
"Everyone, line up in an orderly fashion!" He stood on the high ground, his voice steady and powerful. "One by one! Each person will fire a shot or make a cut! Don't worry about not getting any merit points. Even if you die because the anti-radiation medication expires, I'll still be the highest-ranking person here, and I guarantee you won't be shortchanged on merit points!"
Surprisingly, the scene was remarkably orderly. This kind of "queueing up to shoot the BOSS" had happened many times in the legion, and everyone was quite experienced. A long line quickly formed, and the bug silently joined the queue. Gunshots rang out rhythmically, unhurriedly, like the drumbeats of a cold symphony.
When it was finally BUG's turn, the once invincible green-skinned war boss was now lying in a huge shell crater. Its massive body was riddled with bullet holes and knife wounds, and green blood flowed everywhere. But BUG didn't care. Since the leading commander hadn't ordered a halt, and those who had left earlier hadn't made any joyful sounds of receiving merit notifications, it was clear that the monster wasn't quite dead yet.
Without the slightest hesitation, he decisively raised his laser rifle and pulled the trigger on the part of the green-skinned leader's body that was still barely recognizable as a head. A red beam flashed, adding another charred hole to the rotten flesh.
Having earned the merit points, BUG immediately turned and left, making way for the person behind him. After all, there were many people in line behind him, so it was best to be as quick and efficient as possible.
After leaving the crowd, BUG began to peek out from the throng. During the earlier charge, he had become separated from his friend [Assimilation Complete] and his squad. He wanted to try to find them again, although he knew very well that the chances were extremely slim in the chaos of thousands of people.
Just then, a hand patted him on the shoulder.
"Hey buddy, what are you looking for?"
BUG turned around and saw someone also wearing full-body armor. Unable to see the person's face clearly, he instinctively glanced at the game ID floating above their head: [Ghost Face].
BUG doesn't recognize this ID, but that's normal. There are more and more people playing this game now, so it's unrealistic to try to recognize all the active players' names.
“I’m looking for my friends and our squad,” BUG answered truthfully. “I got separated from them during the previous charge, and I was hoping to reunite with them… but now it seems like the chances are slim.”
"Heh," [Ghost Face] chuckled cryptically, then said, "In that case, why don't you come to my class?"
BUG hesitated for a moment. Being alone on such a large battlefield is indeed very dangerous; having a temporary team is better than nothing.
“Okay.” He agreed. Soon, [Ghost Face] led BUG to a relatively secluded edge of the battlefield. When BUG saw the IDs above the heads of the other members of Ghost Face's team, he instantly panicked.
Freddy Krueger, Jason Statham, Michael Scofield, Leatherface...
He felt as if he had come to an extraordinary work group.
"Freddy, I've found new recruits," Ghostface called out to the guy with the ID "Freddy." "We've got enough people, let's go."
“Okay,” Freddy replied lazily.
Then, the team, consisting of eight people including the bugged one, began to silently move forward in one direction.
"Where are we going?" BUG asked warily, noticing that the group was clearly moving away from the main force. He began to seriously suspect that these guys were planning to lure him to some remote area, then swarm him and chop him into mincemeat, staging a horror movie scene from the game.
"You'll find out when we get there," [Ghost Face] said mysteriously. He seemed to sense BUG's nervousness and initiated a conversation, "Speaking of which, newbie, do you have any favorite horror movies?"
"Hmm..." BUG thought for a moment, and to fit in with the group's style, he tentatively asked, "Does Resident Evil count?"
"No! Of course not!" [Ghost Face] yelled immediately, like a cat whose tail had been stepped on. "A superhuman protagonist with telekinesis slaughtering a bunch of mindless corpses! Where's the terror and fear? I absolutely refuse to call this a thriller; it's more like a gore movie!"
BUG initially wanted to say that you were going a bit too far, but then he thought that arguing with these people about movie classifications would be pointless, so he obediently said, "Then there isn't one."
"Well, that's a real shame." [Ghost Face] seemed to have a lot to say. After finishing this topic, he immediately changed the subject. "You know, Nest City is currently hosting a 'Blade Feast'."
"Blades' Feast?" BUG repeated. "You mean Astartes fighting in a ring? But our Legion only has two Astartes, how can we hold a Blades' Feast?"
"You didn't know? This news's all over the forums," [Ghost Face] said excitedly. "The Space Wolves are here! A bunch of Fenris's tough guys are having a fierce fight with our [CaiHaiWan] and [WanHaiCai]!"
"Then why don't they go to the front lines and fight in the hive city instead..." BUG asked, puzzled.
"They have their own plans," [Ghost Face] shrugged, his tone suddenly becoming somewhat excited. "And I actually think it's a good thing they didn't come, because... I can kill even more people!"
BUG subconsciously asked, "You mean earn more merit points?"
"No, no, I don't care about honors." [Ghost Mask]'s helmet turned towards BUG. Although his expression couldn't be seen, BUG could sense the fanaticism beneath the mask. "I'm talking about killing. Do you understand? It's like plunging a cold knife into the body of a sentient, thinking being, feeling his warm blood spray onto you through the wound, hearing his wailing cries of extreme pain and fear of death..."
BUG felt the hairs on the back of his head stand on end. He subtly distanced himself from Ghostface and said, "Um... have you had a mental health check-up recently? If not, I would suggest you get checked out right away."
"Hehe." [Ghost Face] let out that ambiguous laugh again. "Don't worry, I'm taking my medicine."
