Chapter 188 After the general mobilization for the war, the workers in Macurag had to work eight hours a day!
Just as the investigation was proceeding smoothly, several inhuman screams suddenly erupted from the crowd. A gene stealer hiding among the nobles' retinue abruptly raised his head, his eyes rolled back, and an invisible wave of psychic energy emanated from him.
This was the sectarian wizard's last stand. Realizing he was completely exposed and had nowhere to escape, he used a psionic link to issue a suicidal order to all his lurking brethren.
In an instant, hundreds of gene thieves scattered throughout the starport, who had yet to be identified, launched a riot. They tore off their disguises, revealing their ferocious faces and hidden claws, and frantically pounced on the nearest auxiliary soldiers and innocent civilians.
However, this desperate struggle appears utterly ridiculous and futile in the face of absolute power.
"For Macurag!"
Before Calgar could even move, the First Company Terminators behind him reacted. The Stormblaster roared deafeningly, a dense storm of explosive shells instantly engulfing the entire hall. Those alien spies who had just been so menacing couldn't even offer any real resistance, being torn to shreds in the explosive hail of bullets. The cultist wizard who had unleashed his psionic energy was smashed into a bloody pulp by a casual punch from Calgar himself, along with the reinforced ground several meters thick beneath his feet.
The chaos lasted no more than thirty seconds from beginning to end, and even under the skillful control of Calga and the Terminators, not a single civilian was accidentally injured.
When the smoke cleared, order had been restored, except for the scattered alien wreckage and a few frightened civilians. This sudden riot, ironically, saved a lot of trouble in identifying the perpetrators. Seriously? With such a small force, they dared to act so arrogantly in front of the Ultramarines Chapter Commander and the entire First Company Terminator Guard?
“The situation has been resolved, and there’s probably no trickery involved,” he said, but Ruan Wenbo’s doubts were still quite evident.
Calga could see it too, his eyes sharp as an eagle's: "What, are there still aliens that should have been caught but haven't been caught yet?"
“Yes,” Ruan Wenbo said, pointing to a pile of minced meat on the ground. “The greatest advantage of the Genestealers as scouts and spies of the Tyranids is their locked morale through psionic links, as well as their terrifying infectivity and stealth—although their stealth largely stems from the incompetence of the Imperial’s official management—and all of these require one source: the Genestealer’s chieftain.”
“Isn’t that the psionic alien?” Calgar asked, pointing to the cult wizard who had been smashed into a pulp by the Power Fist.
“No,” Ruan Wenbo shook his head, “He’s just a sect wizard, at best a mid-level one. The clan leader’s combat strength is usually comparable to a Dreadnought.”
Ruan Wenbo's words did not cause much surprise among the Space Marines. Scouts were already synonymous with elite in the military, and the Tyranids were a cosmic-level war swarm. If their "top scouts" were not of that caliber, they would be ridiculed.
Calga asked with some curiosity, "Have you ever fought against the chieftain of the gene-stealers?"
“Yes,” Ruan Wenbo replied, “At that time, there were only a thousand people who went to their deaths, just a subordinate unit of the Peditian Astral Army. A dozen of our soldiers, loaded with tactical nuclear bombs and gravity parachutes, jumped off a Valkyrie transport plane and perished together with that cunning chieftain who couldn’t escape in time.”
Calgary nodded slightly, his massive helmet gleaming with genuine admiration: "They must be warriors of immense honor and courage!"
The other Ultra Warriors around him also deeply agreed. Such a heroic act of sacrificing oneself for humanity is worthy of respect in any world.
During the conversation, Calgar had already arranged all the follow-up matters for carrying out the remaining inspection work and conducting a large-scale review of the entire Macurag through the battle group's communication network. He said to Nguyen Van Bo, "I think Governor Nguyen Van Bo, you must be very eager to go to Hera Fortress now."
After this incident, Calgar's impression of the Death Warriors had changed from simply being a "heroic legion fearless in the face of sacrifice" to also including "experts in dealing with Tyrannosaurus." Putting aside everything else, the fact that they averted the catastrophe at Sirocco Port alone was enough to inflict a heavy debt of honor on the Ultramarines. And Ruan Wenbo's response to Calgar was naturally: "I couldn't be happier!"
Nguyen Van Bo followed Sicarius, Calgar, and the First Company to Hera Fortress, but the small squad of suicide soldiers he brought with him remained there to assist the auxiliary forces in their upcoming large-scale investigation. Nguyen Van Bo and the suicide soldiers saw no problem with this. Although their duty was to protect the governor, who could possibly harm Nguyen Van Bo with the Ultramarines chapter commander and an entire Terminator company nearby?
Even if we take a step back and assume that an enemy of that caliber actually appears, Ruan Wenbo feels that he could have died without regrets if he could attract such a person to assassinate him.
Along the way, through the observation window of the armored personnel carrier, Nguyen Van Bo saw many Macurag citizens looking hurried, and the whole city was shrouded in a somber atmosphere.
The Ultramarines made no attempt to hide this, and after noticing that Nguyen Van Bo was quite concerned about it, Sicarius explained, "The news of the impending war has had a significant impact on Macragge."
“Yes,” Calgar nodded. “In order to deal with the threat of the Tyranids, we have mobilized the entire Altera for war, and Macurag is naturally included. The workers’ working hours have been extended to eight hours a day, and their holidays have been reduced to only two days a week.”
Upon hearing this, Ruan Wenbo immediately wore a bewildered expression: "Peditia still maintains a fourteen-hour workday and only ten days of vacation a year..."
Upon hearing this, Karga's usually stern face broke into a loud laugh that echoed throughout the armored vehicle. His words carried the pride of a ruler of Macrag: "No need to belittle yourself, Governor Ruan Wenbo. Not every planet has the superior conditions and rich history of Macrag. Your concern for the lives of the people of Peditia already surpasses that of ninety-five percent of the planetary governors of the Human Empire."
The armored personnel convoy drove through the streets of Macurag's capital, eventually heading towards the magnificent building perched atop the mountains—the Hera Fortress.
When Nguyen Van Bo stepped off the troop carrier and witnessed the legendary fortress, even he, accustomed to the colossal creations of human empires, was deeply awestruck by the sight before him. Fort Hera was less a fortress and more a city seamlessly integrated with the mountains. Forged from pure white marble and indestructible adamantite, countless towers, spires, and turrets pointed towards the heavens, while the colossal eagle emblem and the chapter insignia of the Ultramarines gleamed atop the structures. An ancient and solemn aura permeated the air, as if every stone itself spoke of millennia of glory and war.
Ruan Wenbo's heart pounded, and his breathing became rapid. He knew that deep within this fortress lay a legend, the son of an emperor, Robert Guilliman. He would soon see the Primarch with his own eyes—though in a state of slumber enveloped by a stasis field.
The massive Terminators strode forward with heavy steps. Calgar stopped and turned to Nguyen Van Bo. His voice, coming through the loudspeaker, was gentle: "Well then, Governor Nguyen Van Bo, let Company Commander Sicarius guide you on your tour first."
He raised his power fist and pointed to the other end: "When you feel you've finished your tour, come to the Arctic Fortress. We'll discuss how to deal with Tyrannosaurus there."
Ruan Wenbo was somewhat surprised to hear this: "I thought the Ultramarines' command center was located at Hera Fortress."
Calga shook his head: "Hera Fortress is indeed historically significant and holds many memories... However, it is no longer a purely military facility. You'll see for yourself once you go inside."
After saying that, Calga led the Terminator Guard of the First Company to another passage. Their figures quickly disappeared behind the huge archway, leaving only the heavy sound of their footsteps echoing in the corridor.
