Chapter 20 Emperor, I Will Become a Firefly
Chapter 20 Emperor, I Will Become a Firefly
The heavy logging guns did have an effect, but the results were completely different from what Elias had expected.
The instinct for survival is powerful, and the wisdom of the lowlifes in the city often manifests in these crooked and unorthodox methods. As the saying goes, for every policy from above, there's a countermeasure from below.
Forced back by the threat of death, the cultists, after charging some distance, quickly discovered a perfect "loophole." One cultist, grazed on the scalp by a stray bullet, stumbled and fell to the ground in terror. He realized with horror that, once prone, most of the laser barrage firing from the opposite trenches whizzed past his head, significantly reducing their hit rate!
What's even better is that as long as he doesn't stand up and run backward, the heavy logging guns of the rear commando team won't target him!
He immediately lay still on the ground, his hands covering his head, his body pressed tightly against the blood-stained ground, like a frightened ostrich.
This brilliant discovery was quickly imitated by others.
Thus, a truly comical scene unfolded on the battlefield. The cult army, which had initially charged forward like a tidal wave, crumbled after suffering some losses. They lay in droves on the open ground a hundred meters or so from the player's position, as if performing some kind of bizarre worship ritual. They neither advanced nor retreated, but simply crawled on the ground. Occasionally, a few unlucky ones would be taken out by fragmentation grenades or precise shots from the players, but large-scale casualties were indeed contained.
Taking over the players' positions? This became an even bigger pipe dream. The entire offensive came to a complete standstill.
Elias, watching this scene from above, was so angry he trembled and felt like his lungs were about to explode.
Casualties were, in his eyes, the least important thing. What he wanted was victory, to crush the enemy, to advance! Not to watch his army play dead on the ground like a swarm of terrified maggots!
"Useless! A bunch of damned cowards!" His shrill, piercing curses echoed across the command platform. "You lowly creatures! You think you can gain the attention of the dark gods? You don't even deserve to be sacrifices!"
He unleashed a torrent of vicious curses at the believers lying on the ground, but they either couldn't hear him or, even if they did, dared not move.
After venting his anger, Elias's cold rationality regained its grip. He realized that relying on this bunch of useless fools was impossible. To save face and take back this damned position, he had to rely on himself.
"A bunch of ants, how dare you defy my will?" he hissed, purple psionic flames rising around him. "Let me personally show you ants who still believe in the Corpse King what true power is! The will of the Dark Gods cannot be disobeyed!"
Before he finished speaking, Elias transformed into a purple streak of light and leaped down from the high platform!
He crashed into the center of the players' position like a meteorite, the ground beneath his feet cracking instantly. A violent shockwave of psionic energy spread out from him, and the first few players hit were sent flying backward, bleeding from all seven orifices before they could even react.
This sudden turn of events left all the players stunned.
Elias gave them no chance to breathe. He raised his staff high, purple lightning flashing in his eyes.
"Die!"
A twisted purple lightning bolt descended from the sky, striking a player who was trying to raise his gun precisely. The player instantly turned into a charred, smoking humanoid figure, along with the laser gun in his hand, which melted into metal.
Immediately afterward, Elias waved his hand, and three shrieking psionic missiles materialized out of thin air, whistling as they shot into another firing point where players were gathered. The violent explosions sent up a cloud of dust, and the bunkers, sandbags, and several players there were all reduced to ashes.
In the blink of an eye, more than a dozen players were killed without warning, each with a different manner of death, creating a horrifying scene.
Looking at his masterpiece, at the "Astral Army" so vulnerable under psionic power, Elias's pent-up frustration vanished, replaced by unparalleled joy. He spread his arms and let out a triumphant laugh: "Lackeys of the Corpse King! Suffer! Howl! And then die!"
As for the players' reaction...
"Holy crap, why did the BOSS suddenly come down?"
"Starting with zero frames, not even a cutscene! Shouldn't they have given us a long speech on stage first, and then jumped down after we were ready?"
"Damn it, why did you have to use psionic lightning to fight me?! The laser gun and bulletproof armor I just exchanged for with merit points are gone again! How long will it take to earn them back?!"
"Bro, you're dead and you're still worried about your gear?" "Of course! You're a hero again in ten seconds, but if you lose your gear, it's really gone!"
Elias reveled in the thrill of slaughter, wielding his staff as if conducting a symphony of death and destruction. Purple lightning and the fiery flashes of explosions mingled, transforming this small battlefield into a hell for mortals.
However, after the killing spree, he awkwardly discovered that something seemed amiss.
The anticipated scene of the enemy collapsing, fleeing, and crying out for their mothers did not materialize. After the initial chaos, these Astronaut soldiers showed little fear towards him; on the contrary... the way they looked at him was filled with an emotion he could not comprehend at all.
It wasn't hatred, nor despair, but a mixture of greed and excitement... a longing?
It's like a pack of hungry wolves spotting a piece of fat meat falling from the sky.
A powerful shout, cutting through the battlefield's chaos, rang out: "Kill the BOSS! Gain merit points! Exchange for the Poison Blade!"
The atmosphere on the entire battlefield changed instantly.
"Damn! Bro, is this rhyming enough for you to take the postgraduate entrance exam?"
The players, who had just been chased and harassed by Elias, simultaneously turned their guns on him, shouting slogans he couldn't understand, while laughing and chanting incomprehensible slogans. They aimed all the weapons they could fire at him.
"Shhhhh-"
"Bang bang bang-"
Lasers, live ammunition... hundreds and thousands of attacks poured in from all directions like a storm, instantly engulfing Elias's figure.
A purple psionic shield instantly appeared in front of him, like an indestructible eggshell. Dense attacks struck the shield, creating dazzling ripples, but they couldn't harm him in the slightest.
Elias gave a disdainful snort; the strength of the shield gave him boundless confidence.
However, when he saw the cultists who had just mustered a bit of courage and were preparing to charge with him, but then, upon seeing the terrifying concentrated fire, decisively pulled their heads back and continued to play dead on the ground, his anger, which had just subsided, was reignited.
"A bunch of useless trash!" he roared at the cultists, then yelled at the players, "Your attacks are meaningless to me! I defended them all!"
He thought this powerful declaration would demoralize the enemy, but instead, he was met with looks from the players as if they were looking at him like he was an idiot.
This look set off alarm bells in Elias's mind, and sensing something was wrong, he abruptly looked back.
A figure appeared silently behind him, standing in a blind spot where the psionic shield couldn't reach.
The man was none other than the ruthless Assassin. His body was covered with a dense ring of fragmentation grenades bound with duct tape and rope, and two anti-vehicle magnetic bombs were hanging on his chest. He looked like a mobile arsenal.
At that moment, he was holding a large handful of fuses that he had just pulled off a grenade.
The moment their eyes met, Assassin grinned, roared, and lunged at Elias: "Your Majesty, I will become a firefly!"
