Chapter 54 From Split Operations to Operation at the Gravesite
Having removed their weapons and equipment, the players, traveling light, quickly confirmed Ruan Wenbo's hypothesis through physical reconnaissance—the outer perimeter had indeed been abandoned by the Genestealer Cult. As they advanced, the carefully disguised tripwires and directional mines proved remarkably vulnerable to the players' advantage of resurrection.
Without the worry of damaged equipment, many players simply roll over there without doing any searching, regardless of whether there are traps or not. They touch everything to trigger the traps, and then the place becomes safe.
As it turned out, this method of risking lives to clear minefields was extremely effective. The purpose of setting traps was to force the enemy to spend time carefully searching out of fear of sudden death. But those who went to their deaths were not afraid of dying at all!
Taking advantage of their resurrection, the players swept through the traps that would have delayed the main force for hours, clearing them out one by one.
Kyle, who had retreated deep into the factory, watched everything unfold through the surveillance cameras. He had originally thought the trap array could at least delay the enemy for half a day, but it didn't even last an hour before these bizarre astral soldiers wiped out his life.
Kyle felt a chill run down his spine. Perhaps he had just made a wrong decision. These people, brainwashed by the Corpse King, didn't care about sacrifice at all. Their indifference to death was beyond Kyle's comprehension. But in any case, the decision had been made, and all the cult members had retreated into the factory.
"Anyway, I've already reported the situation, and reinforcements are on their way," Kyle muttered to himself, placing his hopes on the distant reinforcements.
After the outer perimeter was cleared, Nguyen Van Bo did not rush to advance. He ordered the fourth squad to conduct a probing shelling of the factory ahead.
The wyvern's shells whistled as they struck the factory's steel walls with dull thuds. However, apart from the sparks and billowing dust, the vast factory complex remained completely still, not even a single enemy corpse thrown down by the explosion was found.
Nguyen Van Bo abandoned his plan to continue the bombardment. Clearly, the gene-stealers' retreat into the factory was not without reason. This reaffirmed Nguyen Van Bo's suspicions—the enemy was measuring them by the same standards used to measure the remaining imperial forces on the planet. The enemy considered manpower their fatal weakness and wanted to deter these suicide bombers with high casualties.
"Too clever by half," Ruan Wenbo thought to himself.
If the enemy continues to hold the outer defenses, given the high merit cost of the Wyvern Cannon shells, Nguyen Van Bo's merit points probably won't last long enough to break through the entire outer line. But now, the enemy has abandoned the outer defenses and retreated into the factory.
High-casualty urban warfare is actually a good place for players with the advantage of unlimited respawns to earn merit points; those who go to their deaths will only become stronger in battle.
The players stormed through the factory's steel gates almost without hesitation. The heavy gates were deliberately left ajar by the Genestealers, as if silently inviting the Astral Army into their lair. The players, too, gladly accepted, knowing it would be a tough battle, but for those facing certain death, a tough battle meant greater glory.
The moment they stepped inside the gate, the first gunshot shattered the silence of the steel complex. It was a narrow corridor on the side of the entrance hall, where several gene stealers lay in ambush around the corner. Their automatic guns were crudely made, but powerful enough to riddle the three players at the front with bullets in an instant.
Faced with the sudden attack, the players reacted almost instinctively. In the instant the gunfire erupted, they ducked, firing to suppress the enemy while simultaneously seeking the nearest cover. Containers and abandoned machinery became their temporary shields. Bullets and laser beams clashed in the air, striking metal walls with a clanging sound and sending sparks flying.
"Damn it! These bastards!" A player who had just respawned cursed as he stood firmly beside his squad leader. Without much hesitation, he threw a fragmentation grenade at the corner where he had previously gotten himself into trouble. The grenade arced through the air and landed precisely deep in the corner. With a crisp kill notification and a booming explosion, he smugly patted his backside, thinking the problem was solved.
"Alright, problem solved..." Before he could finish speaking, a cover on a ventilation duct in the ceiling above his head was suddenly violently ripped open, and a Genestealer leaped out like a predatory spider, its agility terrifying. Its black claws, whipping through the air, pierced the player's abdomen the instant it landed. The intense pain stiffened the player, but his battlefield-honed reflexes allowed him no hesitation; he retaliated with a swift motion, plunging his combat dagger deep into the cunning man's head. The next second, both men were melted by the concentrated fire of the other players who had reacted.
The difference is that this player revived next to his class monitor a few seconds later; while the cunning player was completely reduced to ashes and died forever.
After a fierce firefight and several cycles of death and resurrection, the players finally managed to eliminate the initial threat in the entrance hall. As the gunfire subsided and the smoke cleared, they discovered that the hall was far more complex than they had imagined, with several passages that seemed to lead to different places; it was dark, deep, and full of unknowns.
"What should we do? Split up?" one player asked hesitantly, looking at the deep passageways.
"In horror movies, splitting up usually results in a graveyard incident..." another player replied with a hint of sarcasm, clearly recalling some classic scenes.
"What's there to be afraid of? Those daredevils in horror movies have laser guns and bayonets, don't they?"
While the players were discussing and arguing, Company Commander Ruan Wenbo, located in a safe zone, issued his orders via walkie-talkie: "Start the attack separately. Too many people crowding into one place will hinder your movement and make you vulnerable to being surrounded by the enemy. Squad leaders, be careful to protect yourselves. As long as the squad leader doesn't die, the team members can revive on the spot, so even if there is a shortage of troops, it won't be too serious. Each squad chooses its own route and advances with extreme caution!"
"Roger that, Company Commander!"
"Yes, sir!"
"Understood, Political Commissar!"
"For liberation, democratic officer!"
"Yes, sir!"
A variety of responses filled the communication channel, making it unusually lively. One player couldn't help but mutter under their breath, "Our organization's composition is a bit complicated..."
