Chapter 114, Section 30: The Confession That Was Never Heard
—Iron Tower. Third Platform—
He Ye was hiding, dodging left and right.
He felt like he was cosplaying Jackie Chan in a furniture store, leaping and rolling forward just to avoid being seen.
The intense gunfire and screams mingled together, making people's ears ring, as if they were in the middle of a war.
To be honest, He Ye was terrified when he heard this.
He had no idea what was going on.
Just half a minute ago, He Ye was frowning, pondering a solution, leaning against the wall, inhaling and sighing. Monica left with that intriguing remark, then took her gun and left, presumably to help beat up that bastard Krauser.
After a dozen seconds, He Ye still hadn't come up with a solution when he suddenly heard the elevator door ding-dong.
Then came the sound of a loud explosion.
The earth is shaking and the mountains are shaking.
He Ye was bewildered for a moment.
Perhaps we can guess a thing or two, because the sound of the elevator means someone is coming up. The steep, ascending staircase has already proven extremely dangerous with a number of lives lost, so those specialists certainly won't risk using that staircase again.
Although the elevator broke down inexplicably, someone would always fix it. Once it was repaired, the group of specialists would ride up in the elevator—this was the official counterattack—one could already foresee the heavenly soldiers and generals emerging from inside, shouting "Damn it, can Monica and she withstand this?"
Therefore, He Ye was in a state of utter confusion upon realizing this.
He began to cautiously move toward the direction where the battle was taking place.
And that's how the scene above came about.
With her superb skills, He Ye hid behind a load-bearing pillar. This place was very close to their battle site, about forty meters away. He Ye could even feel the gunshots getting louder, as if the person with the gun was approaching her.
Taking a deep breath, He Ye decided to check the situation.
Next scene.
Emerging from the dust and smoke was Winston—the Black Flower Commissioner, his face grim, wielding a swift sword as he charged toward Monica.
Monica, who was hiding behind the obstacle and firing, remained calm under pressure. The muzzle flashes from the gun barrel were like a snake's tongue flicking out, and spent cartridges bounced and scattered all over the ground.
Monica began firing as she retreated.
Winston remained undeterred, dodging erratically with fluid and graceful movements, without any unnecessary actions; the bullets didn't even soil the hem of his clothes.
If this continues, there is no doubt...
Monica will die if she gets too close.
Further ahead, elite agents, sharp as dragons and fierce as tigers, were locked in battle. They were fighting an unknown assassin, but for now, there was no need to worry.
The most important thing right now is Monica's safety.
As He Ye was frowning, pondering how to rescue her, he suddenly sensed something was wrong again.
Because Monica was retreating towards her side!
The distance they were retreating was closing rapidly; in just two seconds, only ten meters remained.
He Ye was at a loss. He had rolled all the way here without any handy weapons. Although he had a gun and a dagger, this would really be risking his life—and the next second, before He Ye could even react!
"Crack!"
A sound like bones cracking rang out, and at the same time, a figure flew backward rapidly from beside He Ye, as if he had been kicked away! He then rolled several meters on the ground in a disheveled state.
That's Monica.
In that brief moment, Winston had already reached Monica, employing every trick in the book. A woman who only knew how to use guns and scalpels facing a professional fighter—the outcome of their battle was a foregone conclusion.
In just two exchanges, Monica had to use her arm to block the kick that came at her, while simultaneously biting off the fuse of a grenade and throwing it between the two men.
This was her last resort to buy time.
But clearly, it didn't have much effect.
Two seconds later, a violent sound rang out in mid-air outside the Eiffel Tower.
Winston kicked the grenade away cleanly, the air rising up and stirring up dust on the ground, even making Winston's hair tremble slightly.
He wanted to quickly step forward, draw his sword, and plunge it into the heart to kill the female gunslinger. The commotion behind him made Winston realize she wasn't alone; he needed to go back and investigate the screams. With so many people, including several Golden Flower agents, such screams were certainly intriguing.
But the next second.
Winston abruptly took a half step back, his eyes slightly widening.
The terrifying attack I had imagined did not come, not even a whisper of sound – all that was there was the female gunman slowly and clumsily getting up from the ground in front of me. She simply took off her shattered glasses frame and coughed as if she were feeling a little regretful and uncomfortable; that kick had at least crippled her right arm.
But that's not right.
There's someone behind that load-bearing column.
Winston had no intention of greeting them. He had already squinted again, preparing to go around and strike first. Perhaps the other party was an accomplice in the hijacking of the Eiffel Tower—after all, so far, they had no information about the thugs on the third floor.
The intriguing thing is that,
Winston's foot had just braced itself and pushed off the ground to take a step.
The other party had already surrendered with their hands raised.
Winston's expression turned strange as he abruptly stopped, like a race car braked in desperation, nearly crashing through the guardrail. This wasn't just because of his act of surrender, but more importantly because of his clothing and face.
"It's one of our own, don't shoot." He Ye feigned paleness as he gave his name, "Corporal Leon, Fourth Field Team, Security Section."
"...What are you doing here?" Winston asked, puzzled.
"It's a long story. I was the officer Captain Krause ordered to lead the way... We stormed up the ladder, but we were ambushed. I managed to hide and escape, and I've been hiding here waiting for backup."
"..." Winston took a deep breath and remained noncommittal after listening. He knew Krauser's personality, not to mention that he had met this officer in the morning. Since he was one of their own and had survived by sheer luck, it was fortunate and worth remarking on.
She ignored him.
Winston simply told him to keep hiding.
After the battle on the third platform ends, someone will naturally come to take care of him and check if he is injured.
Just as he had calmed the lost young officer down, Winston couldn't continue. He stopped, breaking out in a cold sweat, because his sixth sense told him that there was great danger coming from behind.
"Get out of the way!"
Winston shouted angrily to warn He Ye, while rolling to the side to avoid it.
The next moment,
What remained pinned to the ground were only the crimson flying blades that had pierced through the air.
Logically, such a commotion shouldn't warrant a shout for him to get out of the way. He Ye assumed it was a fragmentation grenade thrown at his feet, causing the Black Flower to panic so much. But Winston was simply very sensitive to danger; what he had just felt was close enough to death, even if it was just a bloodstained dagger flying towards him.
But thanks to him.
He Ye had already dodged dozens of meters away, avoiding a direct confrontation with the assassin fighting Winston. He stepped forward to check on Monica's injuries, his expression grim.
"Are you OK?"
"You won't die... what are you trying to say?"
"What else can I say? Damn it, you're still acting tough even in this situation! When are you going to finish your mission? I'll find a way to get you out of here."
"Who knows... Just let Lawrence snipe quietly up there. Once he comes down, our mission will be over."
He Ye lowered his voice and frowned as he asked; Monica replied calmly. He was pretending to arrest prisoners while keeping some alive, but actually checking on Monica's condition. The last, barely conceived plan was to lock them all in one car, then hijack it and escape—a desperate measure, a last resort.
Otherwise, he simply couldn't figure out how to survive.
Or...
"finally found you……"
The sudden sobbing startled He Ye. He was still putting fake handcuffs on Monica, which would unlock automatically if his fingers touched her joints.
But now we have to stop.
He Ye looked back.
Loris appeared here for some unknown reason.
She rested her hands on her knees, slightly out of breath, clearly having just finished a difficult sprint. Then, she looked up at He Ye wearily, her eyes red and filled with resentment and a sense of relief.
"You..." He Ye was speechless for a moment.
Why is she here?
"What are you doing?" Loris sniffed and took a deep breath.
"...I'm handcuffing the prisoner. This is a serious public security incident, and we have to leave him alive," He Ye explained in a deep voice. He was afraid that Lolis would see through his intentions and was even more confused as to why she had come with such an expression.
But he hadn't finished speaking.
Lolis grabbed He Ye's wrist, pulled him to his feet, and led him quickly back without looking back.
He Ye was truly at a loss.
"Hey, what are you doing?!"
He Ye, who was being pulled to run, was completely bewildered.
Loris, suppressing her fear, said from the front:
"It's very unsafe here. There's a terrible enemy. You'd better leave now. Don't worry about that prisoner. Listen, staying alive is the most important thing for you."
"What the hell?"
He Ye asked the question with a headache, and then saw the scene near the elevator entrance. It was a scene of blood and corpses, with only one person trembling and panting against the wall, and several corpses on the ground.
Lor's curly hair was stained with blood. He was leaning against the load-bearing wall and was finding it hard to exert any strength. He had only exchanged three short blade blows with the black-haired, red-eyed assassin, but the overwhelming power he had shown made him feel hopeless. Now he was even a little too weak to support his body.
If it weren't for the commotion at Commissioner Winston's place drawing her away, Lorre wouldn't have survived.
The two of them should have already started fighting.
"I'm so glad to see you're still alive..."
At this moment, Lor looked at Lolis, who had returned, and smiled bitterly, saying that she had escaped unscathed because she was the first to run out. It seemed there were only two enemies here; no new enemies had appeared yet. But even those two had given them a severe beating.
Lolis didn't say anything and ignored him, but forcefully pulled He Ye straight to the elevator.
There was also the body of a commissioner next to the elevator. He seemed to have tried to escape back into the elevator, but died halfway there, so his body got stuck in the middle. This is why the elevator is still on the third platform and hasn't gone down.
He Ye was completely bewildered and fell silent.
Loris kicked aside the peacefully sleeping clerk, then pushed He Ye into the elevator, her eyes filled with sorrow yet earnest as she spoke:
"You should leave quickly, really."
"No... what about you?"
“I want to stay here. We’ve already come up here, we can’t just run away. The problems here haven’t been resolved yet… I really don’t know why you’re here. When I heard the news, I was terrified. But thankfully you’re alright now. I’m begging you, please go.”
Lorice stood outside the elevator, pretending to be relaxed, wiping away tears from the corners of her eyes as if relieved.
Lohr watched this scene speechlessly. In fact, he also wanted to retreat, but Loris was right. This matter needed to be resolved by someone, and as an agent of the Enforcement Bureau, he couldn't just run away now that he had come up here.
Unable to shake his limp wrists, Lor suddenly caught a glimpse of a burly man approaching out of the corner of his eye. Although Commissioner Krause seemed injured, he still managed a relieved smile.
There might still be a chance.
At the elevator entrance, the already closed elevator doors couldn't be reversed. When He Ye was initially stunned, the doors on both sides had already begun to slowly close together. At this point, no matter how many times he pressed the open button, it was to no avail. Damn it, how did those engineers fix the elevator?!
"Hey!" He Ye was banging on the door.
Loris stood at the door with such a sad look in her eyes. Even though it was only a brief second or two, she seemed to be seizing the moment, saying goodbye even in such a short time.
"Actually, there's something else I want to tell you, but I might never have the chance again. It's something I've always wanted to say, even though I don't like this atmosphere at all, but really... I..."
The continuous stream of sad words made Lolis clutch her chest, as if it were suffocating. She had bitten her lip countless times to prepare herself for what to say—but the sound of the mechanical steel cable pulling overhead drowned out her next words as the elevator doors slammed shut.
"……I like you."
He Ye pounded on the door but didn't hear him.
Grass!
What and what is this?!
The elevator had begun its slow descent, and the feeling of weightlessness surged up from my ankles to my head, accompanied by a mix of frustration and confusion. He Ye watched Lolis's figure rise until it disappeared from sight, a silent farewell through the transparent glass. His fingers pressed against the glass window, unable to hear a word except for the noisy creaking of the steel cables.
One second, two seconds.
The unstoppable fall has become a reality.
After a brief moment of confusion, He Ye regained his composure. He knew he couldn't let things continue like this. Aside from the fact that going down would only make things worse by having more ISAB agents come up after the elevator stopped on the second floor, not to mention that Loris was still up there. He would blame himself if she were in real danger. Although he didn't know why she had suddenly appeared on the tower, He Ye could tell that the usually aloof girl was worried about him, and there was even a heavy emotion in her words just now, but he hadn't heard it.
A way to stop it was quickly devised.
Enraged, He Ye drew the gun from his waist, aimed at the motor housing, and pulled the trigger. The area, which had already been patched up, was hit again—and soon, the elevator's descent was stopped!
But that's not enough. Although the broken elevator could cut off the specialists' support, there's still the matter of going back.
He Ye braced himself against the wall, leaped, and grabbed the elevator car next to him. He had already destroyed the opening with his gun, and now he only needed to use his sharp short blade to pierce the metal ceiling of the elevator car.
Metal from that era quickly cracked and shattered under the impact of bullet holes and sharp blades.
Once, twice, three times!
Soon, a whistling wind rushed into the elevator car.
He Ye leaped up, grabbed the edge, and struggled to climb up, standing in the deep elevator shaft with a look of utter despair in his eyes.
