Chapter 118, Section 34: She'll never forget this kiss.
The wind howls at the top of the tower.
The ground where Lawrence stood was littered with spent shell casings. He pulled the bolt again and fired the last bullet, which flew into the distance and ignited a small spark in his field of vision.
As dusk fell, crimson crimson swept across the sky.
The approaching clouds carried the last vestiges of dusk, and the sounds from below the third platform, which had begun moments before, had fallen silent. Lawrence wasn't sure if the agents or his own people had won; his task was simply to complete his mission and then ascertain the situation.
From the tower's hundred-meter height, most of the city was visible. Lawrence could see several fires burning, indicating the operations of other teams. Their operations should be going just as well; hopefully, they would meet again.
Lawrence thought to himself, ignoring the cacophony of sirens below.
The advertising airship was approaching the top of the tower. In the industrial age before helicopters existed, there weren't many ways to float – this airship, developed by STI Military Industries, was one of them. Logically, it shouldn't be here, but the person operating it was a familiar face to Lawrence.
So he ignored the approaching airship and simply put away his sniper rifle and walked down.
Lawrence strolled down the zigzagging staircase.
The air was thick with the stench of blood, and there was no sound of movement around. Lawrence walked straight ahead until he confirmed the elevator was stuck, then came to the stairwell at the back, where he saw two people.
Monica's arm hung limply at her sides, a cigarette between her fingers. She leaned against the wall, resting calmly. When she saw Lawrence approaching, she simply asked:
"Mission accomplished?"
"Perhaps." Lawrence shook his head.
Then he turned to look at Yugiri, who was sitting on the ground. She was facing away from him, motionless, with her head slightly lowered, like a child who had even dropped her weapons on the ground.
Lawrence was puzzled. Although he had never quite understood his companion, Yugiri, this behavior seemed rather strange, so he asked:
"What happened to her? Is she hurt?"
The cigarette smoke curled upwards, and Monica said softly:
"She met with He Ye."
Lawrence fell silent: "..."
"Why is he here?" Lawrence frowned in confusion. "And we were discovered too early this time. Could it be that the operation has been exposed again? Logically, it should be Fick and those C-country guys carrying out the operation while we are conducting street ambushes. But instead, we've become the first place to attract attention. That's strange."
Monica listened without commenting, simply extinguishing the last puff of her cigarette: "Hmm."
“Have you seen Mark?” Monica asked again.
Lawrence remained silent for a long time: "He's not here."
"You sound like you know where he is?"
"..."
The conversation between the two was interrupted by a series of hurried footsteps; it turned out that someone else was coming down from the top of the tower.
Mark descended the openwork staircase, shouting anxiously, "Hey! Guys, are you alright? I'm here to rescue you!"
Monica smiled, her hair falling beside her ears, looking very intellectual. Lawrence kept a cold face and didn't want to speak. If his gun wasn't out of bullets, he would have cocked it again right now.
"Uh... why do you guys seem unhappy?"
Mark rubbed his hands awkwardly and walked over, looking left and right, not knowing which person to look at. But isn't it good that everyone is still here?
"How do we save them?" Monica asked. "There are people all over the place down there."
“We can get out of here by airship!” Mark exclaimed excitedly, pumping his fist and rolling up his sleeves. “I’ve already got an airship. We can just land on it and take all of you in without any problem. We might be followed by the National Security Agency, but it’ll be dark soon, and they won’t be able to see our exact direction. Besides, things are so chaotic right now…”
"Where did you get this airship from?" Monica suddenly asked.
Mark hesitated, scratching his head: "This..."
Lawrence took a deep breath and turned around, about to explode, but Mark quickly raised his hands and interrupted, "This isn't the time to dwell on this. We should leave first, shouldn't we? Otherwise, we'll really die here!"
Monica stepped forward: "You're right, let's leave here first."
Lawrence ultimately said nothing and followed Monica forward, preparing to reach the top of the tower.
Mark was relieved to see this, but he was puzzled to see the two of them walk forward while Yugiri remained in the same place. Could it be that the most important person in the team was injured?
"What happened to her? Is she injured?"
Mark shared the same question as Lawrence.
Monica didn't bother to answer this time, but just sighed and glanced at Lawrence, who replied softly, "Monica said she met with He Ye."
Mark opened his mouth, wanting to say something, but then stopped. Meeting... what the hell? How could those two meet? And what's He Ye doing here?
Mark understood why Yugiri was sitting there so distractedly; anyone would be disoriented seeing a dead person come back to life. But as the captain of the squad, he was responsible, so after gathering his thoughts, he stepped forward to try and comfort her.
Although we deceived you for so long, we all meant well... Now that you know He Ye isn't dead, you don't need to be so sad, right? After all, this is super good news, because being alive means we can still meet! —Mark had already prepared his speech in his head like a charlatan, ready to go up and persuade you with great emotion.
However, when he walked up to Yugiri...
It wasn't a feeling of being absent-minded; it was more like a feeling of being so frightened that one's heart had closed itself off.
The eyes of Yugiri were so dreamy.
"Hey, hey, hey, are you alright? It's not Sophia, what happened to you?!" Mark exclaimed, dumbfounded.
Mark patted her shoulders with his rough hands and shook her, but she didn't react at all. After a while, she slowly lowered her eyes, like a small animal about to curl up.
Mark had thought that Yugiri was reminiscing about this rare meeting and might be feeling sad, sad that he had deceived him and left without saying goodbye. But now—she felt completely out of sorts, unlike her previous state, not even as withdrawn as when she had insomnia.
Hearing Mark's exclamation, Monica turned around in confusion.
The situation didn't seem to be as she had imagined.
Monica didn't see the scene of He Ye kissing her, so she had Yugiri sit there to let her calm down and adjust to this delicate encounter.
But now it seems that it's more than that.
Monica hurriedly went back, and Lawrence frowned, not quite understanding. The three of them looked at each other around Yugiri as if they were having a small meeting in front of a scarecrow.
Everyone was so worried, everyone was so confused.
until,
Yugiri carefully touched her lips with her finger.
Their eyes were so blank and ignorant, bewildered and confused.
The three people looked at each other, trying to understand the meaning behind the action.
It may end without illness.
Only she herself understood the delicate way she touched her lips.
But without a doubt, she became like this after coming into contact with He Ye, and he was the culprit.
At this moment, the sky was forced to turn dark blue.
Night falls.
The group could not linger any longer. As darkness fell, they could not see far enough, and the airship might collide with some wobbly crashing plane. Monica had no choice but to suggest carrying her away first, and then they would find a place to stay and discuss what would happen next.
So Monica carried Yugiri on her back; Lawrence picked up her weapon; and Mark walked ahead, eager to get started and fly the airship while reading the manual—that's how he had flown all the way here.
To be honest, the future is uncertain.
This operation has a significant impact. Everyone was prepared to die, but there was still a glimmer of hope... but it was just a glimmer of hope. The city has been placed under full martial law, and no effort will be spared to find the rat.
And their faces have already been seen.
The only way out is to leave this place.
Regardless, the airship had already quietly taken off into the night, and even though the police officers below exclaimed that they had seen it, they couldn't make out the exact direction it was heading.
On the airship, Mark was sweating profusely, looking as if he were facing a formidable enemy, which annoyed everyone.
"Damn it, what's this tow rope for? With so many people on board, do we need to refuel? Oh God, please don't let it crash!"
When disaster strikes, the only option is to pray. Mark drew a cross on his chest, looking quite like a charlatan. His wig was already on the ground, and the greasy middle-aged man was fiddling with things on the control panel with one hand while holding the instruction manual tightly in the other, muttering to himself all the while.
Lawrence was examining Monica's injuries, her sleeves rolled up to her shoulders; Yugiri looked dazed, hugging her legs and curling up in a corner.
High in the sky, the airship resembled a soaring bird.
The night in Greenley was as black as ink.
