Chapter 19: 19 A Life of Ups and Downs

Chapter 19. A Life of Ups and Downs
at the same time.

—A corner of the slum—

"Wow...that was so exciting!"

He Ye stopped, panting, and leaned against the wall. His face was full of the joy of surviving a disaster. Sweat had soaked his white shirt. The self-proclaimed gentleman now looked exactly like a homeless man!
One hour, a whole hour!
Almost an hour has passed since He Ye saw the police officer get out of the car and shouted the line "When disaster strikes, everyone flees for their lives."

He dared not stop for even a moment during that time!

The wailing of sirens echoed throughout the escape. They encountered no fewer than ten police cars just as they drove through the streets and alleys. The National Security Bureau officers relentlessly searched outwards from the Baplo Credit Loan Company as the central point!

The person who led the way was even a thug who got beaten up badly!

"Sir, you have to stand up for us!"

The thug with a long face led two police officers through the streets and alleys of the slums. When they got close enough, He Ye even hid behind a pile of garbage and held his breath! Watching them, the three of them looked like a combat team with hunting dogs!
Need I say more? If you get caught, you're doomed!
Fortunately, the complex housing and road conditions in the Koborok neighborhood, with its dilapidated mud houses, tents built from abandoned materials, and dimly lit alleyways where even the streetlights were leaking electricity, along with numerous unauthorized homes, made the National Security Bureau's search operation difficult.

Let's bring our attention back to the present.

Having temporarily escaped the encirclement, He Ye breathed a sigh of relief. The long run had left him somewhat exhausted, but what was more exhausting than his physical exhaustion was the grief in his heart.

"Sigh... I hope my friends are alright."

He Ye sighed and silently drew a prayer on his chest. He was safe now, thanks to his superb escape skills. But those homeless people who fought alongside him were probably in grave danger, facing at most six months in prison.

Fortunately, after a brief period of grief, He Ye rallied and cheered up – after all, it's better to die for a friend than for yourself.

I rubbed my head to clear my mind.

Now that he has successfully escaped, where should he go to lay low for the time being?

Country B's spy organization actually has many hideouts in Greeley City, but he has already lost contact with the people in CORE, and he shouldn't cause any more trouble for his old friends.

The best course of action now is to leave the city under the cover of night, taking a train either south or north. The chances of being arrested by the National Security Bureau in another city are much lower. The likelihood of being arrested across cities is no less than a meteorite impact crater; the search warrant will soon be forgotten in a corner.

But the problem is——

He's penniless right now!
They couldn't even afford a train ticket, let alone prepare some food for the journey. Without money, it was impossible to move an inch.

He Ye couldn't help but feel a headache coming on. Thinking carefully about what he had done, he did feel good when he rescued those little guys, but now his disheveled appearance had overshadowed his sense of accomplishment—he just wanted to start a new life.

"Unlucky, unlucky..."

He Ye could only sigh and lament.

Just then, the sound of rustling footsteps came from behind.

He Ye instantly became alert: "!"

Wow, there's movement!

His hand had already instinctively reached for the gun handle, and his feet were slightly straining as if he was preparing to run away. But then, a familiar voice rang out, Nicole Griffith calling out to him.

"Sir, sir, it's me!"

Nicole peeked out like a rabbit and said happily.

"Oh my god—" He Ye was relieved.

Looking at the cheerful Nicole in front of him, who was wearing that worn-out hoodie and staring at him intently with bright eyes, he didn't seem to care about the consequences of following him.

How did you find me?

"Didn't I tell you? My nose is very sensitive! I've remembered your scent!"

Her lively and lovely voice was full of sincerity, leaving He Ye speechless for a moment. He should be glad that she did not work for the National Security Bureau, otherwise, leading a platoon of hunting dogs would not be as good as leading Nicole. Her nose is too sensitive.

Oh well, whatever.

"Don't follow me. I'm in danger. You might be mistaken for one of them... Go home, go home."

He Ye sat on the ground, waved his hand, and took a breath.

The initial fright made him realize that he was exhausted, so exhausted that he needed to sit on the floor and lean against the wall to rest for a while, which would make him feel much better.

"No, I have to go with you, sir."

Nicole said earnestly as she walked up to He Ye, who was sitting on the ground: "You have helped me a lot. You are a very good person. I have nothing to repay you with, so from now on I can only serve you like a slave!"

"You're still blaming me even though I'm not Chao?" He Ye jumped up in fright when she heard this.

“Sir, say whatever you want! I have to repay your kindness!” Nicole said righteously. “After all, I still owe you a lot of money, and I have to pay you back at least!”

Money...pay back the money?
Yes.

If she returns the money to herself, she can run away.

“You’re right.” He Ye put his hand on her shoulder and gestured, “Then give me back the money now, any amount is fine.”

As long as he could scrape together enough money for a train ticket, He Ye was confident he could leave the city overnight. After all, it would take time from issuing a search warrant to deploying personnel, and he could use that time to escape.

Seeing this, Ni felt in her pocket and took out two coins:
"Sir, everything is here."

He Ye silently looked at her hand; both coins were five crowns each, with the image of a bald, middle-aged man printed on them.

This is the money I used to buy fried rice before.

"..." He Ye hesitated for a moment, then laughed in exasperation.

Haha!
“So, sir…” Nicole said awkwardly, looking down, “I can’t repay you that much money, so I have to pawn myself to you as your maid. Although I’ve never been a maid before, I promise I’ll listen to you. If you tell me to go east, I’ll never go west!”

"You're just clinging to me, aren't you?"

“Say what you will!” Nicole said earnestly.

The argument between the two seemed to have startled the crows on the telephone poles in the darkness, who, as scavengers, would circle around the area year-round. But in the slums at night, only snoring and drunken complaints could be heard; such comedic dialogue was rare.

So soon, more crows began to circle and fly high.

They were discovered.

"Oh no!" Nicole keenly sensed the movement!

"What's wrong? What's wrong? What's wrong?" He Ye looked around.

"Sir, I smell those police officers! They're here to arrest us!" Nicole said nervously. "Let's run away together!"

"Your nose is amazing..."

He Ye couldn't help but complain, remaining skeptical. But then he heard hurried footsteps in the alley next door and realized that the hunting dogs and police officers were coming. So he quickly followed Nicole and ran away again through the slums.

"I'm wiping! I ...!"

"Sir, I heard that guy who broke the egg's voice! Yes, it's right next door!"

It's like a Hollywood blockbuster.

Nicole quickly led the way, and knowing the layout of the slums well, she ventured into the deeper, darker alleys, waved to He Ye, and said that following her would guarantee her 100% evasion of being tracked!

He Ye, adhering to the principle of believing first, pinched his nose and started running away, rubbing against the stinky cracks between the walls.

A few seconds later, the sound of hurried footsteps receding into the distance came. The flashlight beam dimmed.

He Ye was dazed by what he saw. Perhaps bringing Nicole Griffith along would be useful, at least it would reduce the probability of being arrested.

Think about it.

The two crawled like rats through the dark sewers. Then, He Ye followed Nicole closely and whispered, "You can leave after you give me back my money!"

"I will pay it back!" Nicole said firmly.

Finally, we climbed to another alleyway.

The two temporarily escaped arrest by the National Security Bureau once again. Nicole patted her clothes, feeling sorry for the dirt on them, while He Ye swallowed hard, suppressing the urge to vomit, and continued:

"I want to go back to Narcissus Street now. Do you know how to leave here?"

The slums are a maze of streets, and the Baplo Credit Company is located in the heart of the Kobolo neighborhood. His previous frantic escape had left him disoriented, so now He Ye needs a guide to show him the way.

"Sure, sir! But before that, I need to go home and pick up a few things!"

Nicole put on the gray cloth hat and then beckoned to him.

He Ye understood that this meant he was being asked to follow her.

Although he didn't know why he had to go home, He Ye could guess a thing or two. He wondered if this little bean sprout was really planning to rely on him. Even if he was kind-hearted, he never thought of supporting a 17-year-old sister.

The moonlight was hazy, and it peeked out from behind the clouds.

The slums were filled with a foul odor, and occasionally the howling of dogs could be heard, as stray dogs fought for territory and called to each other.

Outside the crooked, dilapidated houses, the sound of hurried footsteps roused many from their dreams. Flashlight beams illuminated the alleyway as two police officers, accompanied by a Baploh dog, continued their search.

Finally, after about ten minutes of sneaking around.

The two arrived at what looked like an underground entrance, with downward stairs in front of them. If it weren't for the wooden door blocking their way, He Ye would have definitely thought it was a sewer.

He stood outside, pinching his nose, and said, "Go quickly and come back quickly."

Nicole nodded and jogged home. She pushed open the door and could hear the faint voice of a woman. Ke He Ye remembered that this girl was an orphan in the literal sense.

The wait was not too long.

Two minutes later, Nicole came out with a bag wrapped in blue cloth, tied around her waist, dressed like a flower thief, her eyes clear and bright.

"Rest in peace, Nicole."

A middle-aged woman with a wrinkled face emerged from behind the door, waving goodbye with a kind expression.

"Well, goodbye, Mrs. Lector!"

As the two set off again, He Ye glanced at Nicole, who was carrying a bag beside her. He wanted to say something but instead sighed softly. In the end, he just pretended to be impatient and called out.

"Give me my money and leave."

"I'll pay you back!" Nicole patted her chest and said, "We're going to Narcissus Street now, right? Don't worry, sir, I'll find the shortest route! I guarantee we'll be there in an hour!"

Upon hearing this, He Ye glanced at his wristwatch, which showed 12:17. Without a doubt, the hotel was probably already closed at 1 a.m.

One can only pray that the lady doesn't go to bed so early.

……

—Narcissus Street Hotel—

At one o'clock in the morning, the streets were deserted except for the streetlights. Occasionally, you could see stray cats eating mice next to trash cans, and mice dragging bread crumbs away from the corpses of their companions.

Two furtive figures gradually appeared on the street, one tall and one short, and stopped in front of the hotel.

"Hello! Hello! Ms. Audrey (whispering)~"

He Ye gently knocked on the closed hotel door, calling out. Although he needed to make sure the people inside could hear him, he dared not speak loudly, as it would disturb the neighbors late at night and cause them to call the police.

Nicole stood by, keeping watch, one hand on her forehead, alert to her surroundings. Anyone who witnessed their practiced coordination would recognize it as the opening act of a gang theft.

Slapping again and again.

No news.

He Ye gradually gave up. He knew that the iron gate would not open, but he had to get his suitcase first.

"Oh shit--"

He Ye rolled up his sleeves and didn't hesitate to trample on his own moral bottom line.

The hotel's locked iron door could be opened with just a wire, and He Ye, a former spy, was well-versed in the opening mechanisms of various mechanical locks. He called Nicole Griffith and asked her if she had any magical gadgets that could help him.

Do you have any wire?

"Wire? Yes, we have it!"

Nicole happily took a rusty wire from her pocket and handed it to He Ye. She didn't ask what it was for, but instead skillfully stepped back to the side of the street to keep watch, her eyes clear.

"Alas, my innocence."

His sigh transformed into deft movements of his hands.

Although it was a crime, He Ye was now powerless to do so. He thought to himself that he would not steal any property, but only take his own suitcase, a simple and law-abiding purpose.

Click, clang.

Soon, the hotel door lock was opened.

He Ye pushed open the door quietly. It was pitch black inside, but the moonlight made it difficult to make out the location of the reception desk and the surrounding vases and other items.

Recalling the general layout in his mind, He Ye went to the back of the front desk, squatted down to find his suitcase, and then ran out quickly with it in a comical manner.

After doing all that, it wasn't over yet. He Ye also had to tear off a piece of paper and leave a note to indicate that he had taken the suitcase and that the two ladies didn't need to worry about it anymore!

"Sir, where are we going now?"

Nicole asked happily as she followed beside her.

With mixed feelings, He Ye dragged his suitcase, thinking that the most important thing right now was to get some cash, just three or four hundred crowns would be enough, and then leave the city before the news spread.

The easiest way is to steal, but that would make you just like those unscrupulous people; the second best way is to sell the watch on your wrist, but there are no luxury goods recycling shops open late at night.

"I need to get some money... but where can I get it? I can't really cross moral lines, can I? I don't want to be cursed in secret."

He Ye's mutterings reached Nicole's ears, and she immediately realized that her husband was worried about money. She awkwardly poked her fingers back and forth.

Then he had some thoughts on his mind.

Nicole Griffiths decided to offer her advice.

"Sir, if you need money, I have a way!"
