Chapter 6 The First Wife?

"Are you full?"

Lu Yuan asked casually.

"So full! So full!"

Chen Xiaomiao patted her belly, her face showing genuine satisfaction.

She finished every last grain of rice in her bowl, and even drank the seaweed soup to the last drop. If Lu Yuan hadn't stopped her earlier, she would have scraped all the sauce off the edge of the plate.

As they walked out of the restaurant, the two saw a group of people gathered in the small square in the center of the service area, making a lot of noise.

“Niu Niu, my Niu Niu…”

In the crowd, the middle-aged woman who had just lost her gold thumb ring collapsed to the ground and wailed loudly, her voice filled with anguish.

Seeing the security guard mixed in with the crowd, Lu Yuan leaned over and asked curiously, "Brother, what's going on?"

"Don't mention it!"

The security guard sighed and kindly reminded her, "This lady was so busy arguing with you that she turned around and her granddaughter disappeared!"

We've searched the entire service area, checked the security footage, but there's no sign of her. I advise you to stay out of the way, lest she try to pin the blame on you later.

While Lu Yuan was talking to the security guard, he caught a glimpse of Chen Xiaomiao quietly pinching her knuckles again, her eyes slightly closed, her expression focused.

When she opened her eyes, she lifted her foot to walk into the crowd.

Lu Yuan grabbed Chen Xiaomiao: "Where are you going?"

Chen Xiaomiao said awkwardly, "I counted where that kid is..."

"where?"

"Northwest end".

"Didn't you say your calculations weren't always accurate? Let's go look for it first."

"Oh……"

Chen Xiaomiao obediently followed Lu Yuan, avoiding the crowd, and quickly walked towards the northwest corner of the service area.

To the northwest was the truck parking area, where a long row of large trucks were parked. Lu Yuan squatted down and checked the shadows under each truck chassis one by one.

Sure enough, a little girl in a floral dress was curled up under the third truck, lying motionless on the ground staring out.

The little girl was having a great time playing hide-and-seek with others, completely unaware of how badly her grandmother was crying.

"Niu Niu?" Lu Yuan called out tentatively.

The little girl was startled, her face showing a hint of panic at being caught playing hide-and-seek.

"Come out quickly, your grandma is worried sick about you!" Lu Yuan reached out his hand to her.

The little girl hesitated for a moment, but still obediently climbed out. Chen Xiaomiao quickly stepped forward and wiped the dust off the little girl's face with her sleeve.

"Send it back."

Lu Yuan didn't step forward himself, but had Chen Xiaomiao lead the little girl back to the crowd.

When the woman saw that her granddaughter was unharmed, her crying stopped abruptly. She rushed over and hugged her granddaughter tightly in her arms.

"Niu Niu! My Niu Niu! You scared Grandma to death!"

While the old woman was crying and shouting, Chen Xiaomiao gave a general account of what had happened.

The middle-aged woman suddenly looked up at Chen Xiaomiao, tears streaming down her face: "Girl, thank you! I was wrong just now, I was a bastard, I had a foul mouth! I...I...I'll kowtow to you!"

After the woman finished speaking, she actually started to kneel down. Chen Xiaomiao was so frightened that she cried out "Ah!" and quickly went to help her up.

"No, no, no! Auntie, get up quickly, it's good that the child has been found!"

The woman was helped up and continued to thank and apologize incoherently.

Lu Yuan watched from a distance outside the crowd.

Chen Xiaomiao's face flushed red from the flattery, and she couldn't hide her little bit of pride. Her foxy eyes sparkled, like a little fox that had just tasted meat.

The two returned to the car, and Lu Yuan drove away from the service area.

Chen Xiaomiao was still immersed in the joy of helping others, humming an off-key folk song from the Republican era, and tapping her fingers lightly on her knees.

Lu Yuan casually asked, "She was so fierce to you, yet you still helped her?" Chen Xiaomiao sat up straighter upon hearing this, her face showing a matter-of-fact seriousness: "My master said that we cultivators cultivate our hearts."

"It's my duty to lend a hand when someone is in danger. Her mistake is her karma, and my good deed is my spiritual practice; they are two separate things."

Lu Yuan listened with deep emotion.

It's nothing short of a miracle that this kind-hearted girl survived the cannibalistic famine of 1942.

Perhaps it's true that fools are sometimes lucky, and good people are always rewarded...

Lu Yuan then reminded her, "Xiao Miao, don't do fortune telling in front of people in the future, and don't tell anyone that you can tell fortunes."

Chen Xiaomiao asked, puzzled, "My fortune-telling isn't very useful, is it alright?"

Just because you think it's okay doesn't mean others think so.

Lu Yuan continued, "You may not think much of your skills, but to someone with a keen eye, they are incredibly useful."

When the time comes, they'll use any means necessary to get you to help them calculate something, or to prevent you from calculating something.
"Two steamed buns can't appease you, so what if I offered you mountains of gold and silver, or held a knife to your throat?"

Chen Xiaomiao's face tightened as she listened, her eyes revealing a belated fear: "Okay! I'll do as you say..."

Having said that, Lu Yuan didn't waste any more words.

He was increasingly curious about what kind of education Chen Xiaomiao had received in the Taoist temple, so that she could still be so kind and gentle after experiencing a famine after leaving the mountain.

As the vehicle continued moving forward, Chen Xiaomiao suddenly asked, "Lu Yuan, do you think I'm pretty lucky?"

"Ok?"

Lu Yuan asked a question, signaling her to continue.

"Before my master left, he said something similar to me, saying that there were many bad people down the mountain and that I shouldn't trust people easily. But the family that fled the famine with me were all good people, and now I've met you, and you are also an incredibly good person!"

Why do you think I'm a good person?

"You're so good to me, feeding me and dressing me, and even buying me such expensive clothes. I don't know how to repay you... If you're not a good person, then there are no good people in the world!"

Caught off guard by the unexpected "friend zone" card, Lu Yuan was speechless for a moment.

To be so easily fooled with just a few coins, I guess I need to keep a close eye on things and not let anyone trick me with a couple of steamed buns...

Lu Yuan instructed, "What you've been eating and wearing these past two days is really nothing special, don't make a fuss about it, and don't think about repaying me."

"repay?"

Chen Xiaomiao suddenly froze.

Is Lu Yuan targeting me?
She hesitated for a long time, took a deep breath, as if she had made up her mind: "Um... you can tell me what you're thinking, no need to beat around the bush, but I need to think about it first."

Lu Yuan jokingly retorted, "What are you thinking? What do you think I would have in mind?"

"I'm not an earthworm in your belly, how would I know what you're thinking..."

Chen Xiaomiao turned to look out the window, her cheeks slightly flushed, her mind a complete mess.

What does he mean?
Are they waiting for me to bring up the matter of taking a concubine?
This is so embarrassing...

But then I thought about it.

Lu Yuan genuinely provided for her food and clothing, taking care of her in every way; it wouldn't be unreasonable for her to ask for something in return...

Although he has now escaped the chaos of the past, he is still an "unregistered resident," without roots or support, and in this world eighty years later, he is no different from a piece of duckweed.

It's better to be Lu Yuan's concubine than to be homeless or arrested by those uniformed "police officers".

After much thought, this seems to be the only way out at the moment.

But... I came to the mountain at the age of six and cultivated the Tao of purifying the mind and reducing desires. If I really become someone's concubine, wouldn't it be a waste of my master's many years of teachings?
But then I thought about it again, and my master also said that if you can't even get enough to eat, what kind of nonsense are you talking about?

If I followed Lu Yuan, at least I wouldn't have to worry about food and drink. Serving him in his daily life would be a way of repaying his kindness, right?

The more she thought about it, the hotter her face became, and her heart pounded. Finally, she mustered up her courage.

"Lu Yuan, I have a question for you."

"You said."

"Is your first wife fierce?"
