Chapter 45 Medicine
Chapter 45 Medicine (Seeking monthly votes and continued reading)
Upon waking up, Chen's first action was to retrieve his weapon.
He declined Ulia's offer to help him clean his body, wiped his face and neck with a towel, then put on his clothes, a light yellow military uniform, a belt around his waist, a Type 39 backpack, and finally a helmet.
This outfit wasn't easy to put on. The belt needed to hold bullet pouches and grenade pouches, and the 39 pouches needed to hold a military boot cleaning kit and personal toiletries. But Chen Lai put it on very quickly; it had become muscle memory for him.
In just two minutes, he was like a completely different person. Apart from his still pale face, he was now a fully equipped warrior ready for battle.
"Oh dear, comrade commander, why are you in such a hurry? Such strenuous activity will cause the wound to reopen!"
Ulia wanted to stop him, but looking into his calm eyes, she had no courage to hinder him, so she could only try to stop him with words.
“Ulia,” Chen looked at her, “if I lie here and the Prosen come, what will they do to me?”
Ulia fell silent. The Prosen devils had a complete set of methods for dealing with Rosa's wounded soldiers: either shoot them or hand them over to the Emperor's Guard, who would put them in concentration camps for forced labor until they died.
"So," Chen Lai straightened his collar and adjusted his warrant officer epaulettes.
“Rather than lying in a hospital bed waiting to die, it’s better to pick up a gun and fight to the death… Where does Comrade Korchagin live?” He walked to the door, opened the somewhat loose wooden door, and asked.
“At Julie’s house, the only house in the village with a yard of sago palm trees, was the temporary branch office, where Korchagin and several clerks were located.”
Chen Lai nodded after listening, walked out of the yard, and his fairly thick military boots made a rustling sound as they stepped on the snow.
Kashgar Village is very small and has a very small population. The richest family in the village, Julie, has a two-story house with two courtyards in the front and back. Most of the other villagers only have single-story houses and at most raise some chickens and ducks in the backyard.
The sun was very kind to us today, rising high and casting even, warm rays on the snow, creating a dazzling, oversaturated glow.
Chen Lai walked heavily on the snow, step by step toward Julie's house. He felt the pain of the cold wind blowing on his shoulders, like a draft coming through a hole, and it was a little cold.
Many villagers were packing up their belongings. The courtyards were filled with carts of all sizes, pulled by donkeys or horses. These animals were panting heavily, white smoke billowing from their nostrils, and their front hooves were pacing uneasily.
This is Rosa, Chen thought, a federation built under the ice and snow, with big cities as core strongholds to gather talents, villages to provide agricultural products and manpower, and necessary soldiers during wartime.
"Under the guidance of the great leader Stolt, we will surely succeed in resisting the shameless attack of the Prosenians! Their plot to enslave the Rosa people will never succeed!"
The village's loudspeaker was broadcasting a report written by Rosa's Central Propaganda Committee, the high-pitched female voice carrying far across the snowy plains.
As Chen Lai walked, he listened to the broadcast. It was just right. The loud and powerful voice was the kind of voice that only female laborers could have. This was the "voice of women" that could hold up half the sky. In comparison, what were those broadcasts from later generations?
Listening to the broadcast announcement, Chen Lai's steps became more forceful. He entered Julie's courtyard, found the gate with the sign "Kashgar Temporary Branch" hanging on it, and knocked hard.
"Who is it?" a male voice inside asked.
“It’s me. I’m looking for Comrade Korchagin. I’m a warrant officer in the Donets Front, the officer you rescued who was on the verge of death.” Chen Lai answered clearly, and the door opened immediately. The man before him had a thin face, and his complexion was not ruddy. Instead, he had an anxious look about him, as if he had been worrying about many things. Only his eyes were the most striking feature. They were like an eagle's, like a bear's. When he scrutinized you, you had better have a clear conscience.
"I am Korchagin, Warrant Officer. It's so good that you've woken up. We're preparing to evacuate. Now that you're awake, you can ride in a cart, and we'll push you to the rear."
Korchagin was very happy; Chen Lai waking up was probably the only good news he had heard in a long time.
Although Korchagin believed that his homeland Rosa would surely achieve victory under the leadership of the Iron Leader, it was indeed facing setbacks. The Prosen attack was swift as lightning, and their bombers and tanks combined with tremendous force. Rosa's army was caught off guard and retreated steadily, and was now forced to move towards the river defense line.
“That’s right, Comrade Korchagin.” Chen Lai shook hands with him amicably, their military uniforms instantly drawing them closer: “I’m here to retrieve my weapons…”
"Oh, yes, your sidearm, I almost forgot!" Korchagin slapped his forehead and invited him into the room. Only then did Chen Lai notice that there was a man and a woman sitting in the room, their hands clasped tightly, their expressions seemingly about to part ways.
"Here you go, Warrant Officer. The grenades are in the box on the cart outside. Handle them with care." Korchagin handed over a slender, orange-yellow rifle with a spotless scope, clearly well-maintained.
"Okay." Chen Lai nodded, then looked at the couple inside the house: "What are they doing here? Why are they so agitated?"
Korchagin followed his gaze, understood, and said in a somewhat somber tone, "Julie is staying behind to carry out liaison duties, and Seryozha, the clerk, is coming with us. How can this couple, who have only been together for less than a month, not be agitated by the war?"
What mission is she going to carry out?
"Contact the guerrillas and inform General Pskov of the situation in the Prosen-occupied area. Also, deliver the new drug developed by the rear scientific committee to Comrade Pskov."
"Why would a woman be assigned to such a task?" Chen Lai asked, puzzled.
“Comrade Warrant Officer, you don’t understand the current situation. The army is short of manpower, and the intelligence work at the front also needs people. If men want to join the army, then we can only let female comrades do the intelligence work, even if they suffer grievances in the occupied areas.”
Korchagin spoke in a very tactful way, but Chen Lai understood almost everything he said.
"What does that medicine look like? Can I see it?"
"Of course. I heard that this medicine can effectively help frontline soldiers fight against the Prosenians. It was developed by Comrade Herzog, the chairman of the rear science committee."
As he spoke, Korchagin handed over a small bottle, its packaging airtight and marked with a hazard symbol.
