Chapter 31 The rather perfunctory Black Hawk Sentinels
Honestly, Andrei was just bragging when he said that. Even if he got a certificate and could speak Black Hawk English, it wouldn't be safe.
Putting aside whether others could see his face clearly in the dark and whether it matched his identification, simply asking for a password was enough to leave Andrei completely bewildered.
He didn't capture any enemy alive, nor did he extract any passwords. If he were to ask, he would surely give himself away!
But they had no choice but to try anything, even if it seemed hopeless.
Now that we've come this far, suddenly turning around in front of the checkpoint would really attract attention and make us easy to be spotted!
Andrei was pounding with nervousness, but ahead of his team, there were several other teams and more than a dozen vehicles busy with inspections.
So he wasn't in a hurry and just took his time arranging the appointments.
The Cambrian soldiers at the back of the column, whether sitting in vehicles or walking on the road, were extremely nervous.
They couldn't understand what the Black Hawks were saying, but they could guess that they were about to pass through an enemy checkpoint.
Although they wanted to have faith in their superiors, they were genuinely unsure whether their team could pull through under these circumstances.
Thinking of a certain possibility, the soldiers gripped their rifles tightly, and the soldiers on the trucks even reached for the machine guns inside the cab, ready to fire at any moment.
After waiting in line for ages, it was finally Andrei's turn for the check. But as soon as Andrei greeted the sentry in Black Hawk English, the sentry waved him away impatiently and said:
"Hurry up, stop dawdling, get it over with!"
"Brother, there are so many cars waiting behind us, let's hurry so it's easier for everyone!"
Upon hearing this, Andrei's eyes widened instantly, and he looked at him with an incredulous expression.
Seriously, are you really that unreliable as a sentry?
Not only did they not ask for the password, but they didn't even check my ID?
However, Andrei naturally wouldn't make a fool of himself at such a time. He quickly replied, "You're right!" and then ordered the troops behind him to pass through immediately.
Even as Andrei and his troops gradually moved away from the rear outposts, he felt dizzy and couldn't react for a moment.
"...I mean, are these Black Hawk soldiers really that undisciplined?"
Sitting in the passenger seat of the truck, Andrei couldn't help but frown and ask Boris, who was driving next to him, but Boris was just as clueless.
He couldn't understand how the Black Hawk Army, which was rumored to be known for its strict military discipline, could make such a basic mistake.
However, Boris thought about it again and came up with a possibility, saying with a touch of self-deprecation:
"Captain, I think it might be because they've had such a successful battle that they've let their guard down!"
"To be honest, since the beginning of the war, we have lost countless territories, and several divisions and even army groups have been annihilated by the enemy. We haven't won a single decent victory!"
“If I were a Black Hawk soldier, I would never have imagined that such a bold group of Cambrian soldiers would impersonate their own people and inexplicably sneak up behind their lines, let alone conduct a careful inspection.” Andrei shrugged. It seemed that these Black Hawk soldiers hadn’t learned their lesson from the guerrillas.
However, the situation in the Cambrian Empire was worse than he had imagined. Had they really been defeated so badly?
Andrei couldn't help but compare it to the Soviet Union during World War II, unsure how the Cambrian Empire compared to the Soviet Union at that time.
Judging from its weaponry and the political system it vaguely revealed, the Cambrian Empire seemed to be closer to the state of Tsarist Russia, but the situation in the early stages was almost like that of Operation Barbarossa!
It wasn't just this checkpoint; the situation was similar at another checkpoint we passed later.
The sentries who had to get up and work before dawn were all in a bad mood, wishing that these people would hurry up and run over so they could have a chance to go back to sleep.
Therefore, they were not wary of Andrei's strange mixed force, which included everything from truck infantry to armored vehicles.
Even when passing through the checkpoint behind, the sentry greeted Andrei specially because Andrei offered him a cigarette, reminding him that enemy-occupied territory was ahead and to be careful not to step on landmines.
In response to this reminder, Andrei could only manage a wry smile.
Honestly, he doubted whether there were really landmines ahead. After all, in his memory, the Cambrian army seemed to have been beaten quite badly. Who knew if these guys were in the mood to lay landmines when they retreated?
Andrei took out the small map he had seized from the Black Hawk officer and gestured on it. He figured that if they crossed the bridge ahead, they should be able to reach a small town.
The town is currently under the control of the Cambrian army, but at this rate, the Black Hawk army should be able to capture it soon.
After comparing the routes, Andrei immediately said to Boris:
"Let's head this way next to Coldwater Town and rendezvous with our friendly forces!"
Boris nodded and shouted to the infantry behind the truck; the order was quickly relayed throughout the entire unit.
Perhaps it was because their army was marching in enemy-occupied territory and only Andrei understood the language of the Black Hawk Empire, or perhaps it was because Andrei had achieved remarkable results with his company in previous battles.
Therefore, even though Major Yuri's rank was higher than Andrei's, he still rarely issued orders, and instead let Andrei give the orders more often.
The order was quickly relayed to the entire unit, and the Cambrian soldiers in the unit were overjoyed to hear that they would soon be able to rendezvous with friendly forces.
Many people even wanted to tear off their skin and put on their original dirty and tattered military uniforms, but Andrei quickly stopped them.
They haven't gone far yet. What if another Black Hawk Empire army suddenly catches up with them?
With their old uniforms, they could still catch the enemy off guard; but with new uniforms, they would be the ones caught off guard.
Andrei originally planned to have the troops change back into their uniforms before crossing the bridge, once they reached the bridge.
However, after traveling some distance, he suddenly heard a faint sound like thunder.
Before he could react, the experienced veteran Boris said to him with a serious expression:
"Captain, get our men ready for battle! That artillery fire is coming from the front! Black Hawk troops are besieging this town!"
