Chapter 8 The Ice Wolf Attack
Chapter 8 The Ice Wolf Attack
A row of simple pots sat on burning firewood, and the air was filled with the faint aroma of wheat porridge.
The slaves lined up in long queues, holding rough wooden bowls in their hands, waiting to be given porridge.
Their eyes were filled with gratitude, for in the past they had struggled with hunger every day.
They would fight over even the smallest scraps of food, so being able to have a hot bowl of porridge is a great blessing.
Lord Louis's kindness is never enough!
Standing behind the stove, George scooped porridge with a large wooden ladle, muttering worriedly:
"My lord, if you keep cooking like this, we might not have enough food... What if the shortage becomes too great one day, and we..."
Before he could finish speaking, Louis casually waved his hand to interrupt him.
"When people are hungry, they have to eat. If I tell you to cook, you cook. Why all the nonsense?"
George opened his mouth, but in the end he sighed and resignedly continued scooping porridge.
His new master was good in every way, except that he was too generous and didn't care about food at all.
"Hmph, at this rate, I'm afraid I'll be back in the slave market in less than six months..." George was overcome with sorrow.
Since that's the case, I'd better sneak in a couple more bowls of porridge now, otherwise I might go hungry one day.
Louis, however, didn't care at all.
He wasn't worried about running out of food; the Red Tide Territory was so rich in resources that he wouldn't starve no matter what.
This is the confidence that the golden touch gave him.
Just in time, today's daily intelligence update has arrived:
[1: Baron Hayes, the Pioneer, froze to death after drinking too much alcohol on his way to his territory.]
[2: Emily Edmund, the youngest daughter of the Governor of the North, has broken through to the level of a low-ranking elite knight.]
[3: A pack of 70 hungry dire wolves, drawn by the scent of food, lay in ambush in the canyon ahead, waiting for their chance to attack the convoy.]
The first two points were irrelevant to Louis; at most, he felt a slight sense of sorrow over the death of Baron Hayes.
The third piece of information made his expression serious!
Seventy dire wolves are not something he should fear even with his current forces, but if he is careless and suffers losses from a surprise attack by these ferocious beasts, then the losses would outweigh the gains.
He immediately summoned the knight captain Lambert and gave the order in a deep voice:
"Have the knights form groups of five and first scout out the area around the canyon for any unusual activity."
Lambert nodded without hesitation.
The knights quickly split into groups and galloped off into the canyon.
A cold wind howled, and a sinister chill permeated the canyon.
The knight squad moved slowly along the snow, the air filled with an unpleasant, fishy stench.
It smelled like rotting flesh mixed with the stench of a wild animal, making one instinctively frown.
Lambert dismounted, squatted on the snow, and reached out to brush away the thin layer of snow, revealing messy claw marks underneath.
The deep markings indicate that these wolves were extremely hungry and had no patience to conceal their tracks.
He looked up, his expression grave: "Something's wrong."
They quickly returned to Louis and reported what they had discovered in detail.
After listening, Louis showed no sign of panic: "Very good. Since they've come knocking, let's see who the prey is."
He then ordered traps to be set in the canyons to lure the wolves into them.
A hungry direwolf lay prone in the snow, its eerie green eyes fixed on the convoy in the distance.
Their fur is thick and rough, with a color between grayish-white and dark blue, blending in with the snow and making them easier to hide in this cold wasteland.
Hunger made them appear even thinner, but the terrifying explosive power hidden beneath their bones was still evident.
The wind carries an alluring scent—the prey they've been dreaming of!
"Awooo!" the lead wolf king growled.
Dozens of dark figures suddenly rose from the snow, moving silently like ghosts and gradually approaching the convoy.
Closer and closer...closer and closer... "Bang!"
A dull bang tore through the night, and the massive wooden stake mechanism sprang up, its sharp spears piercing the first few wolves, instantly staining the snow red with blood!
The wolves were startled by the sudden trap and scattered in all directions.
The soldiers lying in ambush on the outskirts quickly drew their bows, and arrows rained down like a storm!
"Whoosh whoosh!"
The sound of something tearing through the air pierced through the air, and the wolves, unable to dodge in time, howled in agony. Several wolves were accurately shot through the throat, rolling and falling onto the snow, their blood quickly staining the white snow red.
"Let's do it now!"
Lambert's longsword flashed through the air, leaving a silver arc.
The knights launched a surprise attack simultaneously, and their ferocious fighting spirit instantly ignited the battlefield!
A knight suddenly leaped up, his spear glowing red, and pierced through a charging ice wolf.
The explosive energy pinned the wolf carcass to the snow, blasting a huge crack in the ground!
The other knight wielded a greatsword, its blade wreathed in crimson flames of battle aura.
He leaped high into the air, slashed down with his sword, and flames split the night, cutting a giant wolf that was trying to sneak up in half!
Warm blood bloomed into crimson flowers on the snow.
The wolves' wild instincts could no longer suppress their fear, and they scattered and fled.
"Close the net!"
The knights adjusted their formation and surrounded the wolf pack.
They unleashed their fighting spirit, each strike taking the life of a wolf.
With the sound of swords slicing through flesh, the wolf pack was completely slaughtered amidst a chorus of screams.
In the end, only the wolf king remained standing alone on the blood-stained snowfield, his thick fur soaked in blood.
His eerie green eyes stared intently at Lambert, revealing a final, ferocious glint.
"Ouch!"
The wolf king roared, its massive body lunging at Lambert, its claws whipping up a chilling gust of wind powerful enough to tear steel apart!
Lambert simply sidestepped, and the light blade formed from his battle aura instantly covered the longsword, its red light surging!
"cut!"
With a low shout, the sword light struck down like thunder.
The wolf king's head was severed from its body, hot blood splattered, and the wolf's corpse crashed to the ground!
The battle ended even faster than expected, with the Knights suffering almost no casualties.
The ground was littered with the corpses of dire wolves, and the blood-red snow testified to the brutality of the battle.
Lambert, without even breaking a sweat, turned to look at Louis, who was riding towards them from afar.
"My lord, the wolf pack has been wiped out."
The knights quickly tallied their spoils—seventy dire wolves, all wiped out!
The spoils were also quite substantial.
Seventy thick wolf pelts, sharp wolf teeth, and most importantly, a mountain of wolf meat!
Louis looked at the spoils and nodded in satisfaction: "Not bad. Skin the wolves and share the meat with the brothers for an extra meal."
The soldiers cheered immediately. In this cold northern region, being able to eat a hot meal of meat was a dream come true!
Moreover, wolf meat is not inedible; if prepared properly, it can taste just as good as the meat of ordinary wild animals!
"The lord is far too generous..."
At this moment, the new soldiers' gazes toward Louis had changed from mere obedience to heartfelt recognition.
