Chapter 2 The White Walkers: When Did They Arrive?
Chapter 2 The White Walkers: When Did They Arrive?
As she lay dying, she recalled that disgusting past.
The ancestral elven emperor, Tarchero Francesca, had one son and one daughter. As the eldest sister, Princess Ellina was raised from birth to be the heir to the throne.
From childhood, Elrina received elite court education, which gradually molded her into a perfect elven noblewoman.
Powerful, arrogant, ruthless, and with an endless pursuit of power.
The ancestral elven empire was a slave-owning society. In the eyes of these proud elves, dark elves were nouveau riche neighbors, wood elves were country bumpkin relatives, and humans and orcs were all lowly, inferior, and barbaric races, slaves whose value could only be maximized by whips and shackles.
However, within the empire, the humans and orcs who had been enslaved did not think that way.
In order to suppress the numerous slave uprisings that broke out in the country, the ancestral elven empire established the Magic Knights Order. Its members were all magic knights who were proficient in spear fighting and wide-range magic, and were skilled at suppressing slave legions that mainly used short weapons and fought in groups.
Ellina served as the Grand Master of the Knights for over seventy years, suppressing more than two thousand slave uprisings of varying sizes across the country. Each victory garnered her more political prestige and strengthened her belief that "humans and orcs are inferior races."
When they were slaves, they groveled before their masters, doing everything they could to please them, yet secretly harbored rebellious and treacherous murderous intentions.
They had no morality or sense of honor when they rebelled, and could easily attack prisoners and civilians who were powerless to even kill a chicken. They would even stab their comrades in the back when there was a dispute over the distribution of spoils.
In Ellina's eyes, the crude and primitive humans and orcs were nothing more than slightly more evolved goblins.
This unwavering conviction allowed Ellina to shed no moral burden when slaughtering slaves of other races. Whether they roared in anger, screamed in terror, or wept and begged for mercy on their deathbeds, she saw them as nothing more than the annoying chirping of pests.
Until the White Walkers attacked.
If the slave revolts were merely a minor ailment, then the White Walker invasion was a more serious threat. Therefore, the ancestral Elven Empire quickly signed peace treaties with the human lords of the Frostlands, Golden Sands, and Fjords, drawing them into the coalition against the White Walkers.
The fact that a lowly and inferior race had become comrades-in-arms who needed to fight side by side was initially difficult for Ellina to adapt to.
She silently led the magic knights, taking on the most difficult missions and appearing on the most dangerous battlefields, fighting bloody battles and bearing countless wounds, all to prove that elves are superior to humans, whether as adversaries or allies.
However, being an adversary and being a teammate are different.
When surrounded by the White Walker army, the Spell Knights were supported by human legions more than once. Ellina always liked to lead from the front, and she was often surrounded and on the verge of danger, but she was also frequently rescued by human warriors who risked their lives for her.
Some people even sacrificed their lives to save her.
The sense of racial superiority she had built up in the past completely collapsed. Faced with the facts, Ellina finally had to admit that there was no essential difference between humans and elves.
They know pain and fear death, but they pursue honor and uphold their faith. They are not unevolved beasts, but a race of wisdom as noble as elves, and an important cornerstone of the civilized world.
As for himself, who has countless lives on his hands, he is not a hero who protects the Elf Empire, but a heinous executioner who harms the innocent.
They are demons who do not deserve to live in this world.
----------
Ellina suddenly opened her eyes.
She covered her chest with her arms, sat up from the ground, and saw the magic circle and ritual candles around her.
A resurrection ritual in necromancy?
Ellina's gaze fell on Renn, and after a moment of silence, she revealed a gentle smile:
"Could I have a piece of clothing?"
Raine took off his outer robe and cloak and tossed it over.
Ellina wrapped her cloak around her body and stood up gracefully.
Her figure was graceful and tall, half a head taller than Renn. Her white hair reached her waist, and her eyes were bright gold. Her fair and flawless thighs were visible through the gaps in her cloak, yet they made it impossible for anyone to have any evil thoughts. Instead, her temperament became even more noble and holy.
Even though she was the flower of a fallen empire, having lost her noble status as the first princess, and was barely clothed with dirt on her feet, she still possessed a perfect appearance and aura.
"What era is it now?" Ellina asked softly.
Ryan understood what she wanted to ask and said:
"It is now the year 264 of the Second Age."
"The Second Era?"
"This is the human calendar system," Renn said succinctly. "It begins with the destruction of the ancestral elven empire, and each thousand years is an era."
"I see." Upon hearing that the ancestral elven empire had been destroyed, Elrina's expression remained unchanged. She simply asked in a gentle tone, "Then what is your purpose in resurrecting me?"
“I need your power,” Renn said arrogantly, raising his chin. “It’s your honor.”
Ellina smiled silently.
Although her expression was elegant and holy, as the master who summoned her, Raine could sense the intense killing intent... and the will to die that permeated her heart.
Unfortunately, the resurrected undead creatures cannot turn against their summoners.
The complex magic arrays inscribed on the ground, with their dense incantations, were mostly not meant to pull the soul out of the River Styx, but rather to imprint heavy constraints deep within her soul, ensuring that she could never do anything detrimental to the summoner, and to forcibly take over her body when necessary.
Raine named the spell "Bird in a Cage." It wouldn't be surprising if the opponent were an ancient hero who fought against the White Walkers a thousand years ago, and they discovered they had been resurrected by forbidden necromancy, to react in any extreme way.
Eagles and falcons with sharp claws and beaks must be kept in cages.
Ellina also vaguely sensed that her soul seemed to be bound by layers of incantations, making it impossible for her to take any aggressive actions against the necromancer in front of her.
She smiled gently and said:
"Then, give me the weapon."
Raine took out the ceremonial dagger from his waist and casually tossed it to her.
This act of giving her the weapon without hesitation further confirmed Ellina's suspicions.
"What's your name?"
“Rain Fahre. Remember, that is your master’s name.”
“Your necromancy is amazing,” Ellina exclaimed. “This body is exactly the same as mine when I was alive.”
“That’s only natural, after all, I’m a professional necromancer,” Renn said proudly. “Creating characters is a required course for necromancers.”
He was not fooled by Ellina's feigned friendliness. Before becoming an ancient hero, this man was a notorious killer, a slaughterer who slaughtered other races like livestock, and the most heinous villain among villains.
“Necromancers, sorcerers who blaspheme death,” Ellina said softly. “They can manipulate the dead to fight.”
"Then why not forcibly control me?"
“What I need is an elven hero who is proficient in both martial arts and magic.” Raine did not try to hide anything, because he knew the other party would soon guess the answer, “not a clumsy zombie that can only pounce and bite.”
“I understand.” Ellina picked up the dagger and weighed it in her hand.
Then he turned it upside down and pressed the tip of the dagger against his throat.
...His body was unable to move.
The caged bird bound her body, forbidding her not only from attacking her master but also from harming herself.
However, Ellina's thoughts at this moment had already been clearly conveyed:
I am not afraid of returning to death, nor do I want to serve you.
“The White Walkers, who have been missing for a thousand years, are about to return.” Raine frowned slightly and said in a deep voice, “Fight for me, ancient hero Ellina, and complete the mission you left unfinished in your previous life.”
“White Walkers?” Ellina murmured. “My mission was completed long ago, before I was even born.”
"The one standing before you is not some ancient hero, but a demon who deserves to be in hell."
As Ellina said this, she suddenly threw the dagger up with force.
Then she closed her eyes, tilted her head back, and opened her arms.
The sharp ceremonial dagger was tossed high into the air, then spun rapidly as it fell diagonally into her heart.
Bleeding.
Ryan's brow furrowed: What's going on? She broke the Bird in the Cage?
No, it's because she didn't intentionally control the rotation of the dagger; whether the hilt or the blade was facing down was completely random, thus bypassing the caged bird's "don't hurt yourself" will lock.
“It seems,” Ellina’s smile grew paler, her expression weakening with blood loss and pain, “that the gods have judged me…”
Before he finished speaking, Raine had already placed one hand on top, his fingers wreathed in abundant holy light.
"Healing spell?" Ellina asked in astonishment, "You..."
"Before becoming a necromancer, I was a professional life priest," Renn said proudly. "Healing is a required course for life priests."
“Necromancer… Life Priest…” Elrina’s face gradually contorted. Her body was alive, but her soul belonged to the undead, so the healing spell was healing her body on one hand, and inflicting cruel pain on her soul on the other.
"Alright." Renn withdrew his hand from the spell, looking at her completely healed chest. "I don't care why you're so determined to die, but you're now my servant, and even if you want to die, you must get my permission... Who is it?"
He turned around abruptly and looked at the tomb passage behind him.
In the darkness, a twisted, crawling figure slithered forward, the stench it stirred up instantly extinguishing the candlelight in the niche, startling Rein and Ellina into a dramatic change of expression.
White Walkers! When did they arrive?
