Chapter 51 Incitement and Assassins
“Dear Ryan.”
"Everything is fine here on Salt Island, no need to worry."
Did you think I would say that gently?
"Now, all sorts of big and small matters come to me in Salt Island!"
"If someone's net is torn, their boat is leaking, or they're short of food, I'm the one who has to step in and solve the problem!"
"Is Salt Island my territory? I ask you, is Salt Island my territory?"
"I promised you I'd be your maid, not some territory affairs officer!"
"I'm asking you, when are you coming back?"
"Reply to me!!!"
Raine tossed Dia's letter aside and shook his head.
The dragon girl in her previous life was like this; she had to be repeatedly beaten down by reality in order to grow up, otherwise she would gradually become arrogant and complacent.
I'll teach her a lesson when we get back.
Currently, there are three lines of work that need to be followed up simultaneously in Rennes's plans.
The first is the rainforest peninsula route, where as many lizardmen as possible need to be rescued and settled on Salt Island as subjects before the White Walkers completely take over the peninsula.
These lizardmen, skilled in water and fishing, can rapidly strengthen the overall power of Salt Island, thus providing solid support for Raine's subsequent fight against the White Walkers.
The second is the Imperial Royal Line, which is where Raine, now the commander of the Imperial Capital Garrison, starts by waving the royal banner to seize more imperial power.
Fighting the White Walkers requires global unity, and the power of the world's strongest human empire is undoubtedly indispensable. The original game's main storyline has already proven that relying on these infighting imperial nobles is utterly futile; it's up to Raine himself to handle it.
Thirdly, there's the Gem Islands storyline, originating from Diamond, the High Elf currently serving on Salt Island. If we truly intend to fight the White Walkers across the world, we must find a way to get the High Elf kingdoms, who tend to adopt isolationist strategies, to join us.
Of course, the former two are more important at the moment, so Raine doesn't have time to deal with the Gem Islands right now. He can only keep Diamond on Salt Island and find him something to do.
The inquisitor and the witcher, still in the dungeon, hadn't revealed any useful information. When asked, they simply said that their superiors had sent them to take over the case.
Ryan believed they were just unsuspecting pawns, but he still kept them locked in the dungeon in order to force the mastermind behind the scenes to intervene and rescue them.
The fact that the opponent hadn't reacted yet was causing some concern. Swordsmen who hadn't yet made a move posed the greatest threat, because you didn't know what surprises they might have in store; all you could do now was try your best to defend yourself.
Raine's gaze passed over the desk and landed on Ellina standing opposite him.
She held a letter from Dia in her hand, reading it intently, as if she were a long-lost older sister receiving a letter from her younger sister…
How could I possibly have such a fantasy: a fairy princess from a fallen kingdom developing familial bonds with a simple country girl?
Raine banished the strange thought from his mind and continued to refine the plan he was conceiving.
After reading the letter from Dia, Ellina carefully put it away and then looked out the window again.
The Imperial Capital Garrison Barracks served as the security post for the Royal Guard during the era of the Ancestor Elf Empire.
The Royal Guard is a subordinate unit of the Magic Knights Order. Almost every guard longs to be promoted to the Knights Order one day. Therefore, whenever Ellina comes to inspect, these young men will perform bravely and push the training intensity to the maximum.
Even a thousand years later, Ellina still remembers every young, vibrant face of theirs.
Looking at the human capital guards outside, their lazy training postures, weak and feeble footwork, and flawed sword fighting filled Ellina with an utterly absurd feeling.
Perhaps when the empires of both elves and humans are nearing their end and about to perish, the key positions are always filled by a bunch of useless people.
"Lady Ellina." Noticing the elven princess's gaze, Magus, who was supervising the training, came to the window and respectfully inquired, "Is there anything in our training that needs improvement?"
“No,” Ellina said. “The practice time has been doubled.”
Magus wondered if he had misheard:
"Uh, you mean, the training time is extended to three times the original amount..."
"You heard me? Get to it now!" Renn's angry shouts came from inside.
"Yes, sir!" Magus instinctively stood at attention. "Loyalty!
Seeing Captain Magus shouting loudly, the Imperial Guards who were still training guessed that their captain had probably been scolded by the Commander-in-Chief again.
After all, the captain only shouts about loyalty when he's not being loyal enough. In the office, Renn reorganized the plan and handed it to Ellina.
The regulations stipulated all the systems for regular soldiers and auxiliary soldiers, including how to divide the ranks, how to differentiate daily treatment, and the mechanisms for promotion, assessment and elimination.
To facilitate daily identification, regular soldiers will henceforth wear gold robes (yellow), and auxiliary soldiers will wear silver robes (white).
"Why differentiate based on clothing?" Ellina asked.
"Are you going to use personal favors to get an answer?" Ryan countered.
"No trade," Ellina refused.
She took the plan and went out, intending to hand it to Magus, when she suddenly heard a commotion in the distance.
A moment later, a guard from the main gate of the military camp jogged over and reported to Renn:
"Commander! Some citizens are causing trouble at the entrance of the military camp, protesting that the serial murder case in the South District has not yet been solved!"
"These damned citizens!" Ryan slammed down what he was holding and cursed, "Didn't I say I'd solve the case within two weeks?"
He led Elrina to the main gate, where they saw the imperial guards struggling to maintain order, while a large number of imperial citizens, more than three times their size, were shouting outside:
"Solve the case as soon as possible! Solve the case as soon as possible!"
Raine glanced around and found that most of the citizens were women, while the few men were mostly thugs who were stirring up trouble and inciting the women to speak out.
Clearly, in the previous serial murders in the South District, the killer targeted prostitutes returning home late at night, so most citizens did not feel a strong sense of crisis.
Now, the crimes have suddenly evolved into daytime home invasions and murders, targeting stay-at-home mothers who work from home. This has caused women in the capital to live in fear, further fueled by the instigation of certain individuals with ulterior motives...
"Ellina," Renn said in a low voice, "go to the dungeon and wait to see if any guests come to visit."
Ellina left with her gun.
Looking again at the indignant citizens, Ryan calmly cleared his throat and said loudly:
"Ladies, please be quiet! As the commander of the garrison, I will not allow a vicious murderer to escape justice in the capital! We have made progress in the investigation, so please give us some patience. We will definitely solve the case completely within a few days and bring that damned murderer to justice!"
"Go to hell! More than a month and not a single result!" someone shouted from the crowd. "The Imperial Capital Garrison is a bunch of pigs! Pigs who only take money and do no work!"
"Don't talk nonsense!" Ryan retorted loudly. "Please stay home and be vigilant against criminals while we solve the case..."
"Go to hell, you pig!"
Suddenly, someone sprang into action and threw a suspicious, unidentified object at Rein.
Magus, who was standing next to Renn, knew it was time to show off in front of his leader. He shouted "Commander, watch out!" and rushed over to be his human shield.
Unexpectedly, Renn was even faster. With a quick crouch and a turn, he immediately hid behind the guards and fled back into the camp.
Magus was hit squarely in the face by an unidentified object, only to discover it was a clump of horse dung. The pungent, grassy smell assaulted his nostrils, making him shout in anger:
"You troublemakers! Beat them up!"
Soon, the imperial guards wielding their swords were locked in a fierce fight with the indignant citizens who were pushing and shoving them. Bloodied and battered people were everywhere, and screams and wails filled the air.
Raine had already run back to the camp. Hearing the commotion behind him, he couldn't help but sneer inwardly.
Trying to ambush me? How naive.
The imperial capital has a long-standing tradition of mob rule, especially during elections. A classic element of the game is the phenomenon of players flocking to collect money from candidates during House of Representatives elections, then immediately transforming into "election hooligans" and engaging in street battles with their opponents' hooligans.
Upon seeing that the other side had arranged for "instigators," Ryan immediately guessed what they were planning and decided to make a quick getaway.
He walked without stopping, heading straight for the dungeon below the military camp, only to find that the battle there had already ended.
Blood was everywhere, and the stench was overwhelming. Elrina stood expressionless, leaning on her spear, while several wounded and bruised imperial guards were brutally beating the assassins who had been knocked to the ground.
Renn looked at the corner of the wall at the end of the corridor and saw that a corner of the floor had been lifted up, revealing a secret passage underneath.
Looking again at the assassins who were sneaking into the dungeon through the secret passage, he suddenly noticed that one of the assassins was bald, with two small mustaches on his lips and very thin lips—just like the heretic described by the previous victim.
"Are there any secluded places around here?" Renn asked one of the guards. "Where we can interrogate these criminals without anyone knowing?"
The guard thought for a moment and said:
“Commander, near the foot of Mount Saint Somar in the north of the city, there is a royal icehouse left over from the ancestral Elven Empire. It is now being used by our garrison to store surplus weapons and equipment—we can take these scum there for interrogation, and absolutely no one will know!”
"Alright!" Renn waved his hand. "Send them to the icehouse!"
