Chapter 18 The Days of Becoming a Child
Chapter 18 The Days of Becoming a Child
"An amusement park?" Caesar looked up at Yumilia, who was looking at him eagerly.
"Yes, Mrs. Bell took Chopper there last month in Landing City. They said there are cars that can fly, a carousel that spins around, and magic shows. It's a lot of fun."
As Yumilia spoke, she herself began to show an expectant expression.
Caesar opened his mouth, but then lowered his head.
"Not interested, I'm not going."
He's not at the age where he'd sit on a carousel and giggle like an idiot anymore, so he's not interested in amusement parks.
"Are you really not interested?" Yumilia pressed.
“I told you I’m not interested,” Caesar insisted.
“Well,” Yumilia thought for a moment, then smiled and said, “I really want to go. Can Caesar come with me?”
Caesar looked at her, hesitated, and finally snorted.
"I don't care,"
"That's great." Yumilia smiled, her eyes narrowing.
Caesar averted his gaze, picked up a piece of bread, tore it into pieces, and threw them into the broth.
After dinner, he got up and took the dishes to the kitchen to wash.
I don’t know when it started, but Caesar would naturally wash the dishes after meals. Although Yumilia said she could do it, he was stopped by her words, “It’s good to learn to do some housework occasionally.”
Yumilia was quite pleased that the child had this thought.
Since it was always Yumilia who used it, the kitchen countertop wasn't very high. He could reach the countertop even standing on a small stool. He quickly finished cleaning up the dishes and wiped his hands before coming out.
Yumilia was trimming a bright red rose the size of a plate in the living room, with five or six more such roses in a bamboo basket next to her.
This is her current job: making flower arrangements for a horticultural farm in town. The finished flowers are then transported to the nearest town, Landing. She is exceptionally skilled at this.
In fact, as a rare elf, Yumilia receives enough social subsidies to support three adults, but in order to send Caesar to study in a big city in the future, she still finds things to do in her spare time.
"Thank you for your hard work, Caesar." Yumilia smiled at him with her eyes narrowed.
Caesar poured himself a glass of water, took a couple of sips, and asked, "By the way, has Uncle Yote written to us?"
"Not yet," Yumilia shook her head. "Because it's not the busy season for farm work right now, so we don't need any extra manpower."
"Oh." Caesar was somewhat disappointed.
Yumilia thought for a moment and said, "However, Aunt Liu Si has been looking forward to your visit."
“Let’s skip that,” Caesar said immediately.
Aunt Liu Si ran a small tavern nearby. Caesar had worked there odd jobs before, but after only two days, he could clearly sense that the single, forty-something-year-old proprietress was looking at him strangely.
On the border between this small village and the town, the only way for a kid like him to earn money legitimately is to do odd jobs on farms, ranches, taverns, or the like.
He also wants to start saving more money now to prepare for the future.
“Actually, Caesar doesn’t need to be in such a hurry to make money. If there’s anything you want to buy but you don’t have enough pocket money, you can tell me. Leave the money-making to me.” Yumilia said softly as she trimmed the branches with small scissors.
“At Caesar’s age, he should be spending his time playing with his friends. It would be such a waste to waste his childhood on work.” “I just want to find something to do,” Caesar muttered to himself, putting down his cup and going upstairs.
"Caesar, the teacher called Yumilia to school yesterday. Did you get a beating when you got home?"
On the way to school the next day, Chopper asked Caesar.
"No, he just scolded me," Caesar said with a shrug.
"Huh? Aunt Yumilia is so kind. Last time, when she found out I was keeping cockroaches in the classroom water bottle, my mom gave me a good beating," Chopper sighed.
"Forget about your mother, I want to beat you up for that incident." Caesar glanced at him.
As childhood neighbors who had even shared a cup of milk, Caesar and Chopper had a pretty good relationship. Chopper was an honest and simple person, but he had a particular fondness for all sorts of little bugs.
Once, he caught a large longhorn beetle in a tree at school and secretly played with it during class. When the teacher came over, he asked what he was playing with. Chopper excitedly took the beetle out to show the teacher, but then he lost his grip and the beetle jumped onto the teacher's face.
That day, Ms. Cecily's screams echoed throughout the entire school.
Moreover, his fondness for insects is indiscriminate; he treats cockroaches, flies, fleas, and the like equally. If you point out that you have fleas in your hair, he says they are his pet named A-Qiang.
"It's a shame, though. I can't get any cheap snacks from you, Caesar. Last time, because the ants I bought ate all the food on the table, my mom cut off my allowance," Chopper said dejectedly.
“To be honest, you should cultivate a more normal hobby,” Caesar said.
They reached the school gate, and immediately heard shrill shouts behind them:
"Caesar, Caesar! Little Casey!"
Upon hearing the shout, Caesar shrank back, revealing an impatient expression.
A pretty girl named Felicity with pigtails ran up to him and walked with him with a smile.
"Good morning, Cassie. I didn't get to say goodbye to you yesterday because I couldn't wait for you to leave school together."
She reached out to take Caesar's hand, but he dodged it.
"Shut up, I told you not to call me that." Caesar glared at him with a dark expression on his face.
“But I heard Yumilia call you that that day, and you answered her.” This time, Felicity wasn’t deterred by his bad attitude and still said with a smile.
"Can you be the same?" Caesar said coldly.
"How am I any different?" Felicity pouted, dissatisfied. "If you're unhappy, you can just call me by my nickname, just call me Felicity~"
"Feifei~"
As soon as she finished speaking, a silly voice came from behind her. Devin, with a buzz cut and a round head, ran over while waving at her with a silly grin.
A fleeting look of annoyance crossed Phyllis's face, but she quickly smiled gently at Devin and said, "Good morning, Devin."
"Hey, good morning, Feifei. I was waiting for you after school yesterday, but you left first," Devin said, scratching his head sheepishly.
"Ah, it's because my family has booked a piano teacher for me, so I have to go back and practice," Felicity said dismissively, turning to continue talking to Caesar, only to find that he and Chopper were already long gone.
"You little sesame ball." Felicity glared angrily at Devin, who was still grinning foolishly beside her.
