Chapter 44 We Will Win! (Please Read On)
But
It's not that the plot hasn't progressed at all.
In fact, there are.
However, the way it progresses is quite different from the previous online version.
The previous online version roughly explained the protagonist's family relationships after his reincarnation in the first three chapters, and created a cute little sister for the protagonist by labeling her.
Then they started throwing around the crisis.
"Your family member will die in three days."
What follows is a series of tightly-knit plot developments, such as the transformation from strangers to life-and-death friends with the young lady Iria, and then the two of them working together to solve the mastermind behind it all, which then leads to an even bigger crisis and sets the stage for the next volume.
It's fast-paced, exciting, and full of ups and downs.
However, the new version's content appears rather bland and mundane.
After the protagonist transmigrated, he did not immediately face a major crisis.
She still possesses the same cheat code as the online version, which is "once a day, to obtain information about the future."
But this time, Chiya Umehara didn't rush to have the protagonist use this cheat ability to do anything earth-shattering.
She simply used this cheat code to pick up some bargains.
For example, you could buy rare materials that many people don't recognize at a lower price and then make a huge profit.
Get the information about the upcoming special event before everyone else, and then take advantage of the information gap to gain benefits in advance.
So what does the protagonist do with the benefits gained through his cheat ability?
The answer is that it was used to cover household expenses and to improve the lives of myself and my sister.
The entire first volume is basically an immersive experience of watching the protagonist earn a meager living through his own abilities to supplement his family's income.
There are often long, detailed psychological descriptions, depicting the protagonist's inferiority complex as a loser in her past life, her unease about the unjust happiness she has gained in this life through her cheat-like abilities, or rather, her appreciation for her current happy life.
At the same time, the author devotes considerable space to developing the relationship between her and her sister, repeatedly emphasizing phrases like "In my current view, my sister is the most important person to me" and "Making sure my sister is doing well is the most important thing to me."
Compared to the stereotypical, purely functional younger sister in the previous online version, this new version of the younger sister has clearly been elevated to a more important position in the plot.
To create a more three-dimensional, vivid, and pitiful character, making him seem more like a living, breathing person.
It can be said that 80% of the plot of the entire first volume is driven by the younger sister.
When the protagonist feels inferior and sad, it is her younger sister who comforts her.
When the protagonist is being bullied, it is the younger sister who stands up for her.
After the protagonist earns money, the first thing he does is buy his sister the magic wand she has always wanted and pay for her to attend the magic academy she has always dreamed of.
Making her younger sister's life better is the absolute main driving force of the plot.
It wouldn't be an exaggeration to say that the younger sister is the absolute protagonist of the entire first volume.
Ireya, who previously played the female lead in the online version, doesn't even appear in the current version.
Then, in this very delicate way, I wrote about 100,000 words of daily life.
The protagonist's life gradually improved, and he and his sister went from being poor and hesitant to even afford meat to becoming middle-class people who could live a decent life.
As a reader, if you've read this far, you'll already feel a strong and immersive sense of satisfaction.
They might even feel, "After seeing this, there's nothing more to see. I feel like I already have everything."
Then, suddenly, the plot started to align with the online version.
"Three days from now, your entire family will die."
The prophecy has come true once again.
This concludes Volume One.
It took Makoto Mukoyama nearly three hours to slowly and completely read through the 3 words.
After watching it, she had a feeling that was hard to describe. To put it simply, it was exhilarating.
It was actually quite enjoyable.
Reading it carefully gives you a great sense of immersion and enjoyment.
However, it's very different from the exhilarating, fast-paced storyline of the previous online version.
The new version offers a more emotional, audience-selective, and less direct sense of enjoyment.
It takes a little more patience to get into reading it.
Although the plot follows the same direction, the pacing is more than twice as slow as the online version.
The crisis of "family members will die in three days" that was introduced in the first few chapters of the online version is only revealed in the last plot of the volume in this new version as a suspense for the next volume.
Instead, there is a nearly 10-word account of the impoverished daily life of the protagonist and his sister.
Speaking specifically of this part about slow-paced development, it's actually quite well written.
Very delicate, very special.
Personally, Makoto Mukaiyama prefers the current version to the previous one.
However, as a light novel editor, her rationality made her question the manuscript.
After watching the entire version, she asked Chiya Umehara a very serious question: "Do you really think this one will sell better than the previous version?"
Chiya Umehara was almost asleep by now.
Hearing this, she quickly came to her senses and replied, "I feel that I put more effort into this version than the previous one, and I poured more of my heart and soul into it."
"Compared to the previous version, the current version is my complete version."
However, Makoto Mukaiyama shook her head.
I'm not saying whether it's well-written or not, but...
Do you really think this novel will sell better than the previous editions?
"Light novels are, after all, popular entertainment. If you want to make money in this field, I think it's more reasonable to simplify the content, just like the online version you wrote before."
"The lower the reading threshold, the larger the audience it attracts, and the easier it is to go viral quickly."
"Your current version is more delicate and sincere. However, whether it is the plot structure or the text arrangement, you have added too much. This will naturally filter out a lot of potential audiences at this stage."
"A light novel is supposed to be easy to read. But I don't see any ease in this one at all."
"For example, the numerous descriptions of the protagonist's feelings of inferiority in your novel—are these really necessary? Or, would these descriptions really be popular with the vast majority of readers? Have you thought about these questions?"
The editor's question was within Chiya Umehara's expectations.
Because it wasn't just the editor who thought about these issues; she herself had actually considered them long ago.
She is also an experienced author with a keen sense of the market; she had already considered these issues while writing.
Moreover, they had already reached a conclusion in their hearts.
She knew what she was doing, and she knew what she was writing, so...
will win.
