Chapter 9 : Landfill
Chapter 9 (Quality Tumor 1): Landfill
6500 million years ago, the Victoria wetlands on Earth
The Venusians are technologically advanced and have been venturing into space for over 100 years, with tens of thousands of artificial satellites, probes, and spacecraft traversing between Venus, Earth, and Mars.
One side effect of space activities has become apparent: space debris floats everywhere, threatening the safety of shipping lanes, and even occasionally falling onto planets, causing loss of life and property.
Recycling space debris is time-consuming and laborious, so the Venusian Alliance decided to have Earth's "cleanup team," located in the middle of the orbit, do this annoying job.
The "cleaning team's" equipment mainly consists of a space elevator located in the Victoria Wetlands and a dedicated garbage-cleaning spacecraft in low Earth orbit. The personnel, of course, are serious criminals exiled to Earth and clones created by Maria.
Victoria Wetlands on Earth thus became a landfill for Venusian space debris.
Maria assumed that after Tesla said goodbye and returned to Venus a few days earlier, his work on Venus would keep him occupied, and it might be a long time before they met again.
To Maria's surprise and delight, just a few days later, Nikola Tesla returned to Earth and stood before her, accompanied by Abbott, the dean of the Venusian Academy of Sciences.
After having dinner together, the three sat around the table.
Abbott asked, "Nikolai, our mission this time can only succeed, not fail. Time is of the essence, yet you dragged me to Earth. Now can you tell me why?"
Tesla gently took Maria's hand and said, "Maria, you are isolated in the exile. Unfortunately, Venus is facing a great crisis. Abbott and I have been ordered to devise a plan for the safe escape of the Venusians."
Tesla turned to Abbott and said, "If the Venusians have to leave Venus, the only habitable planets are Earth and Mars. Earth is naturally the first place we need to investigate."
Nikola Tesla shared his thoughts with Abbott and a shocked Maria: "Venus currently has a population of over 60 billion. It would be an almost impossible task to relocate them all to other planets. The difficulties would be immense, and the factors that need to be considered are extremely complex."
Tesla analyzed and evaluated the data and plans compiled by the Venus Academy of Sciences, and through the Lightning Ball, connected with an external brain to form a plan.
There are only three planets in the solar system that are located in the habitable zone for humans: Venus, Earth, and Mars.
Tesla's immigration plan is "one primary, one backup, and one secondary." This means terraforming Mars as the primary destination, keeping Earth as a backup, and allowing Venus's natural environment to recover over a considerable period so that Venusian humans can eventually return to Venus, where they are most accustomed to and adapted.
"According to my plan and that of the experts from the Academy of Sciences, Earth is the first choice. Why would you choose Mars as your first choice?"
"Earth does indeed have many similarities to Venus, making it seem like the primary target. Before explaining my reasons, let me first tell you why the Lightning Ball's external brain ruled out Earth."
Tesla gave Maria a meaningful look and continued, "The underlying values of the big AI model are set by us humans, so its reason for excluding Earth is that humans have no right to exterminate dinosaurs."
Tesla's reasons were certainly not just ethical issues. Earth does have many similarities with Venus, such as similar radius and density, similar surface gravitational acceleration, and an oxygen concentration of 28%, slightly higher than Venus's 21%. But this is not necessarily a bad thing.
However, the Earth's tectonic plate movement is too small, resulting in almost no high mountains, making it impossible to form long rivers and extensive alluvial plains. How can a planet unsuitable for agriculture and animal husbandry be considered habitable?
"My plan is to use a superluminal power station to inject energy into the Earth's interior, intensify plate tectonics, and create mountains and rivers. Before that, we Venusians will go to Mars first."
Abbott immediately drew a parallel to the fact that the ultra-light wave power station caused the ground on Tasmania to rise 3000 meters, resulting in a large-scale marine regression.
He slapped his thigh and said, "Brilliant! Let's start transforming Earth now, move the Venusians to Mars, and then move them back to Earth once the Earth's landscape becomes habitable."
“Abbott, don’t forget that Mars isn’t exactly an ideal place either; we Venusians can’t just move in with our bags packed.”
Abbott calmed down and said, "Yes, aside from the extremely low temperature on Mars, the biggest challenge is that Mars' gravity is only one-third that of Venus. This will be the most difficult thing for Venusian humans to adapt to. If only we could increase Mars' gravity."
Inspired by Tesla, Abbott finally jokingly put forward that utterly absurd idea:
How can we significantly increase the gravitational acceleration on the surface of Mars without changing its mass?
Ninety years ago, Nikola Tesla submitted his paper "The Dynamic Principle of Gravity," in which he proposed the superluminal hypothesis, which has been verified by later experiments. Tesla had a different understanding of gravity. Through formula derivation, he discovered that in the same gravitational field, the gravitational force on an object is equal to the strength of the energy it displaces, and the centripetal acceleration is equal to the constant of the gravitational field multiplied by the energy intensity at a given distance.
So what about different gravitational fields? Through the study of the mass-luminosity relationship of thousands of stars, he found that the mass-luminosity relationship of different stars is not straight. Red stars with low surface temperatures have longer peak radiation wavelengths and a relatively higher mass-luminosity ratio, while hot blue stars are the opposite.
Does a longer peak wavelength of a gravitational source (star) correspond to a relatively stronger gravitational force?
Tesla thus concluded that in any gravitational field, the gravitational force on an object depends on the peak wavelength of the gravitational source and the energy intensity at the distance from the object's location.
Make bold assumptions, verify them carefully; they can be falsified, and they can make predictions.
Nikola Tesla observed a gravity distribution map of the lunar surface. The peaks exhibited unusually high gravitational pull, below average, while the valleys showed unusually high pull, above average. This contradicts common sense, doesn't it?
As a radiation source (reflecting sunlight), the moon has shorter wavelengths at its peaks and longer wavelengths at its valleys.
Mountain peaks have high temperatures, short wavelengths, and relatively weak gravity, while valleys have low temperatures, long wavelengths, and relatively strong gravity. The gravity distribution map of the lunar surface perfectly overlaps with its infrared thermal image! Where does this gravity anomaly come from?
To verify what gravity really is, Nikola Tesla designed an experiment he called the lunar "mass tumor" experiment.
“Grossoma? How come I, a biology expert, have never heard of such a disease?” Maria asked.
"It's not a real tumor, it's just a metaphor for the gravitational anomalies on the moon's surface," Abbott quickly explained.
A lunar surface gravity probe launched by Venusian astronomers orbited 10 kilometers above the lunar surface, creating a complete map of lunar gravity.
"The gravity distribution on the lunar surface is uneven. Do you think the gravitational pull is stronger in the lunar mountain peaks or in the valleys, or what we call lunar maria?" Tesla asked Maria with a smile.
“Of course, the gravitational pull of the mountain peaks should be greater than that of the valleys, because there are more rocks on the peaks!” Maria answered without hesitation.
Tesla explained to Maria with great interest that the gravity distribution on the lunar surface was the opposite of common sense: the gravity on the surface of the peaks was lower than average, while the gravity in the valleys (lunar maria) was higher than average.
Scientists believe that there is only one reasonable explanation for this anomaly: there are high-density metallic masses beneath the lunar maria, which the academic community calls "mass nodules".
Nikola Tesla disagreed with this statement, arguing that the moon's gravity, as a gravitational source, depends not on its mass, but on the intensity of its emitted energy and the peak wavelength of its radiation.
All the energy emitted by the moon comes from the reflection of solar radiation. The moon rotates slowly relative to the sun, with a period of 27.32 days. The surface temperature is extremely uneven, with high temperatures at the peaks and short wavelengths of radiation emitted, while the valleys (lunar maria) are the opposite.
"Maria, if we fill in a six-kilometer-deep hole in the lunar maria, that is, artificially increase its mass, will the gravity in that region become stronger or weaker?" Tesla proposed his experimental plan.
“The lunar maria already had mass deposits underground, and with the addition of new mass, the gravity will only become stronger,” Maria said.
Tesla predicted that if the lunar maria were filled in, the gravity in that region would not only not increase, but would become even smaller than before it was filled in, the gravitational anomaly of the lunar maria would return to normal, and the "mass tumor" would miraculously disappear completely!
Since gravity is not caused by mass, but by energy intensity and the wavelength of peak radiation, the lunar maria have filled in, the temperature has risen, the wavelength of emitted radiation has shortened accordingly, and the gravity has also decreased, no longer being abnormal.
Abbott was already familiar with Tesla's experimental plan, and he asked with a puzzled look:
"Nikolai, what materials do you plan to use to fill in the target lunar maria?"
Nikola Tesla pointed to the sky, then meaningfully pointed to the distant pile of space debris, and confidently said:
"Use space debris!"
Abbott and Maria exclaimed almost simultaneously:
"You want to use the lunar maria as a new landfill for space debris?"
