Chapter 267 The Past (Part Two)

The young man beside him reached out and patted the boy's head.

"Xunzhi, drag the coffin to the back room. Your Uncle Zhang and I have something to discuss."

"OK, all right."

The little boy nodded emphatically, ran behind Zhang Dong, took off the rope, and pulled the coffin lid towards the back of the house.

Strangely, the coffin weighed at least three or four hundred pounds, but the child dragged it with great ease, his footsteps were silent, and he didn't even make a sound.

No, the little boy didn't seem to be breathing. His face was expressionless, his skin was sallow, and his chest wasn't rising or falling.

"Xu Chang has something in mind; he's been waiting for you for a long time."

The young man's eyes were vacant as he stared at Zhang Dong on horseback. His mouth didn't open, but he made a dry, hoarse sound.

"Thanks, Liu Yi."

Zhang Dong dismounted.

"That guy hasn't caused you any trouble lately, has he?"

Liu Yi's sallow face looked like it was made of paper. His features were faintly imprinted on his skin, his expression was stiff, and he looked no different from the paper figures used for funerary sacrifices.

“I support what he does, otherwise I wouldn’t have agreed to let you settle him here with me.”

He turned stiffly and walked into the house.

“Let’s go, he hasn’t closed his eyes for days, I can’t persuade him to leave.”

The two walked into the house side by side.

From the outside, the room appears to be only thirty or forty square meters, but once you step inside, the space expands eerily. The shadows of the darkened walls stretch out long, and paper figures are densely packed in the corners.

The air was filled with a smell that was a mixture of paper ash and the stench of corpses.

A boy sat on a pile of tattered paper figures, his hair disheveled, his face thin and pale, almost bluish, as if he were severely malnourished. He was muttering something to himself incessantly.

"Failed again... No... If only there were living people... The experiment only shows its best effect on living people... This approach is too dangerous... If there were something that could block supernatural phenomena... My progress could be greatly accelerated..."

"Xuchang meaning".

Zhang Dong looked at the boy in front of him and called out.

But he seemed completely absorbed in his own world and didn't hear Zhang Dong's shouts at all.

He didn't look up, holding a piece of paper doll's limb in his hand, his fingernails stained with dark dirt, as if he was intently piecing something back together.

"The compatibility between vengeful ghosts? The puzzle? If Zhang Dong were here, I could conduct my experiments more recklessly."

He suddenly stopped, looked up, and stared blankly at the doorway.

"Liu Yi! Come protect me! I'm about to begin!"

The next second, he saw who it was.

"Lao Zhang?"

He paused for a moment, then his face lit up with joy, and he laughed a little nervously, “You’ve come at the perfect time, quick, come here, hurry up.”

Zhang Dong reluctantly stepped forward.

"Put what you're doing aside for now; there's something more important that requires you to come with me."

Xu Changyi did not respond, still keeping his head down. He seemed numb to everything around him, only interested in the piecing together in his hands.

He had achieved his goal; as long as Zhang Dong stood there, he was safe.

Zhang Dong reached out and gently patted Xu Changyi's shoulder.

"Ah Xu, this is of great importance. If we succeed, we might be able to save those little Dongs who are lost in countless histories."

Upon hearing this, Xu Changyi paused in his actions, remained silent for a few seconds, then suddenly stood up, threw down the tattered paper figure, and walked towards the door without looking back.

"Zhang Dong, what are you waiting for? Let's go."

The wind outside was still cold and damp.

The two remounted their horses. The white horse neighed, its forehooves kicking up dust as it pounded the yellow mud. "You went to that place again?"

Xu Changyi sat on the back of the horse, the wind whistling past his ears.

"Ah."

Zhang Dong replied affirmatively.

"We can't be sure if those things are true yet; they might just be illusions created by the Ghost Realm. But I brought something out of there."

"I still maintain my point of view: even if you figure out everything that happened there, you still can't solve the problem of ghosts. Including the one you mentioned, which seems omnipotent, it still can't completely isolate evil spirits. We should change our approach."

Xu Changyi sat on the back of the horse, feeling dizzy and pale from the jolting.

"Put that aside for now, are you saying that your future portrait appeared in Room 301?"

"Yes."

Zhang Dong's expression was solemn. The original plan had become unpredictable due to the abnormality in Room 301.

"I also saw a vengeful ghost that was exactly the same as the one Xiao Dong saw."

"That's very interesting."

Xu Changyi's lips twitched, and he wore an expression of complete entitlement.

"I never expected to meet someone from the future, Zhang Dong. This is what I meant before: the supernatural is always full of uncertainty."

Because of Zhang Dong's military uniform, the two of them traveled without any obstacles.

Soon, they arrived at the center of a bustling area.

It was a new building. The exterior was clean, the windows were reflective, and at first glance, it looked perfectly normal.

But around it, the crowd unconsciously dispersed, avoiding this area. Within a ten-meter radius, there was not a single person.

It was as if this building was subconsciously ignored, or excluded from the crowd by some strange, supernatural force.

Xu Changyi dismounted and shook the dust off his clothes.

"That kid surnamed Qin is even more eccentric than me all day long."

"We've already sent someone to contact them."

Weaving through the dense crowd, the two headed towards the building in the center.

"It may take a few days. The world is not peaceful, and the current situation is too chaotic. In order to avoid unnecessary trouble, it is best not to contact each other by telegram."

“Yes,” Xu Changyi nodded.

"Fighting has broken out again in the north, and the situation is not optimistic. Some Japanese demon tamers have joined in, and many have died. The Reform Society is already drafting a list of participants. It seems that their leader is serious this time."

Suddenly, the surroundings became empty; no one stepped into the building within a ten-meter radius.

"What good would it do to win against this tragic force? This is our land. Whether we kill them or die there, it is the ordinary people who will suffer in the end. I still suggest waiting a while and finishing up what we have on hand first."

At this point, a hint of murderous intent flashed in Zhang Dong's eyes.

"After this is over, I will go there in person. If we're going to fight, we'll fight on their turf."

They went upstairs and came to a long, narrow corridor.

The light bulb hanging from the ceiling emitted a faint hum, its light flickering and illuminating the peeling ash on the walls.

The environment here is completely different from the outside, and the place is unusually old.

Xu Changyi glanced at the address above his head and sighed softly.

"I never thought this doorplate would still be used in the end."

"go in."

Zhang Dong gently turned the door open and led Xu Changyi into the room.
