Chapter 99 is a war of attrition.
Liu Yifei's jump stunned the rescue team; she jumped without any preparation, without any measures, and without any warning.

The captain hadn't expected the girl to be so reckless; he was still considering it.

By the time you start thinking about it, everyone else will be exhausted.

The captain's concern was actually Liu Yifei's civilian status. If there were any accidents or injuries, they would be held responsible. Simply put, they were wearing military uniforms and had a duty to fulfill.

After Liu Yifei jumped down, they dared not relax their vigilance even more. They leaned against the stone slabs and looked inside to see what was happening. This also served as lighting for the people below, since they had lights above them.

Qin Xuan looked on anxiously, fearing something might have happened to her.

Fortunately, Liu Yifei landed steadily after jumping. It wasn't very high, only a little taller than an adult. She practices dancing often, so it wasn't a problem for her.

After landing, Liu Yifei picked up the little girl curled up in the corner, wiped her tear-filled face, and gently comforted her: "Don't cry, don't cry, Auntie will take you up."

After being comforted like that, the little girl seemed to feel safer and her emotions stabilized a bit. She just choked up but stopped crying.

Just then, a rope fell down, and the captain shouted, "Check if there's anyone else here."

"That's all." Liu Yifei looked around.

In that case, the little girl's family or parents would most likely be gone.

"Then come up here." The captain used one hand and his body to support himself on the stone slab, while holding the rope with the other hand, and passed it to the others.

So the group, including Qin Xuan, all grabbed one end of the rope, ready to pull her up together.

Liu Yifei first put the little girl down, then tied the rope around her waist, and then held the little girl in her arms while holding the rope with her other hand.

After everything was ready, Liu Yifei looked up and called out, "All done."

Upon hearing the shouts, the rescue team, including Qin Xuan and several others, pulled hard on the rope. Fortunately, Liu Yifei wasn't heavy; she weighed only about 48 kilograms, and the little girl wasn't much heavier either, so it wasn't too strenuous.

If a man went down to carry a little girl, it would take them a lot more effort.

Soon, Liu Yifei was pulled to the cave entrance by everyone working together. It was closer there. Liu Yifei lifted the little girl up and then climbed up herself.

She untied the rope, ignoring the dirt on her clothes, and carried the little girl away to a safe place.

"Slow down, put it down the way it was lifted." The captain instructed everyone to put the stone slab down slowly, following the same path.

If we lay it on its side in another location, there might be people there, and if it's too heavy, it could cause vibrations.

And so, Qin Xuan and the others lowered the stone slab little by little, and just as they were about to put it back in its original position, it still shook.

Fortunately, it wasn't too severe, just a slight tremor.

Earthquake rescue is like this: because you don't know where someone is buried, you have to explore little by little, and the tremors could potentially cause secondary collapse injuries to survivors.

After everything was finished, the team leader and several team members came to Liu Yifei and saw her squatting down, feeding the little girl snacks and water, and coaxing her.

I couldn't help but be touched by this heartwarming scene.

"At ease!" the captain ordered.

The team members behind him immediately straightened their backs as if in response to a stress reaction, standing in neat rows.

"salute!"

As the voice faded, several team members, including the captain, saluted Liu Yifei, their voices ringing out: "Thank you for your heroic act!"

The scene was solemn, and the light shining on these people gave them a sense of reverence. Liu Yifei blushed, and her heart skipped a beat.

This feeling was indescribable; it excited her and gave her a great sense of accomplishment. She stood up, trying to keep her voice calm and steady: "It's all what I should do."

"Turn left!" the captain ordered again.

The team members turned to Qin Xuan and saluted him as well: "Thank you for stepping forward!"

Qin Xuan was swinging his arms, having exerted a lot of strength to move the stone slab, and his hands were a little weak. But when he saw several soldiers saluting him solemnly, he couldn't help but feel moved.

Although they speak harshly, it is precisely this harshness that gives people a sense of tenderness amidst their toughness.

"It was just a small favor!" he said modestly.

Although there was nothing substantial, and no one came to interview them or take any fancy photos of them, it was enough for him; it made him feel that everything was worthwhile.

If no one sees it, then no one sees it. He is content at this moment, and perhaps Liu Yifei feels the same way.

Liu Yifei looked at Qin Xuan, also feeling happy for him. This man hadn't backed down and had persisted all along.

After saluting, the captain said to Liu Yifei, "Comrade, please hand her over to us, and we will take her to the resettlement point."

"OK."

Liu Yifei knew this was the normal procedure. She squatted down, tidied the little girl's messy hair, and said gently, "Follow them. They are military uncles who will protect you."

"Mmm!" The little girl opened her big, confused eyes and nodded obediently. Even at her young age, she knew the value and sense of security those three words carried.

In the darkness, Liu Yifei saw the little girl being led away by someone and slowly disappearing from sight.

This scene may have occurred elsewhere as well.

Liu Yifei walked up to Qin Xuan and asked him, "How do you feel?"

"It feels great, very fulfilling. I've decided to work even harder and save more people." Qin Xuan was telling the truth, and it was from the bottom of his heart.

The sense of accomplishment after saving someone is more exciting than a hundred grand words.

Liu Yifei turned around, her bright eyes visible even in the darkness, and said, "Aren't you afraid no one will see us?"

"Are not you just saw it?"

Qin Xuan looked at her and shook his head, saying, "There's no need for anyone else to see it anymore."

After saying that, he went back to moving stones and digging through the rubble to rescue the people who had just been buried.

"Someone come and carry this stretcher out," the captain shouted.

Qin Xuan raised his hand and offered to help carry the stretcher. The stretcher carried a dead person, which made him feel a little reluctant and gave him a greater sense of awe for life.

As Liu Yifei moved among the stones and watched this scene, he felt as if his life was being elevated.

It wasn't just him; both of them were undergoing a transformation.

The two of them helped the rescue team, working through the ruins all night long. No one slept; they just worked day and night.

The crucial 72 hours are critical; no one dares to slack off!
To put it simply, apart from the disaster victims being able to rest, the rescue workers are constantly on the move.

Early in the morning, the logistics staff brought over boxes of food and distributed them. Qin Xuan and Liu Yifei each received two boxes of instant noodles, a bottle of water, and eight-treasure porridge. The instant noodles were simply soaked in boiling water and eaten. There wasn't such a good food supply; the vehicles couldn't even get in, so how could there be such good food?

These supplies were all carried in by individuals on their shoulders; they are only airdropped in urgent situations.

Amidst the ruins, Qin Xuan and Liu Yifei were completely disheveled, their bodies and faces covered in dust and mud, and Qin Xuan's clothes were torn.

They were sitting on a muddy stone slab, slurping noodles, their cheeks bulging out.

After doing a lot of physical labor, everything tastes delicious.

Liu Yifei ruffled her messy hair, picked up a braised egg from her bowl with a fork, and handed it to him, saying, "This is for you."

"Aren't you going to eat?" Qin Xuan's mouth was full of food, and his speech was slurred.

"You boys do a lot of work, so you should eat more." Liu Yifei put the braised egg into his bowl.

“You’ve done quite a lot too!” Qin Xuan said.

"Girls don't need to eat that much, a little is enough to fill them up," Liu Yifei said, putting down her instant noodles, taking a sip of water, and then picking up the bottled water next to her feet.

"Don't move!" Qin Xuan immediately became serious.

Liu Yifei paused as she was about to twist the bottle cap, her face blank, wondering what he was going to do.

Qin Xuan took the bottle of mineral water from her hand, and in front of her, he twisted the cap hard, saying earnestly, "See! I can open it!"

"How childish of you!" Liu Yifei knew he was still upset about what happened before.

"This is a matter of a man's dignity. If others see this, they'll think I can't even open a bottle cap," Qin Xuan said, taking a sip of mineral water.

He had just run too far and was temporarily unable to exert himself, which allowed Liu Yifei to take advantage of his weakness.

"Great job, great job, a real man!" Liu Yifei smiled and gave him a thumbs up.

"That is!"

Qin Xuan raised an eyebrow, looking quite pleased with himself.

The two found joy amidst their hardship, while the rescue team members, scattered throughout the area, also ate instant noodles.

Some people noticed the two and recognized Liu Yifei, but due to their status, they didn't feel comfortable greeting them or chasing after celebrities. Seeing how well they chatted, they couldn't help but feel a little envious.

What are all these rumors going on? She's brave, kind, and beautiful.

After finishing our meal, we continued to clear the rubble, moving stones one by one to clear the road. Once the rescue was complete, we needed to clear the road.

Despite her small size, Liu Yifei possessed remarkable strength. She could lift a boulder the size of her face and throw it to the side of the road, then lift another boulder the size of a millstone and throw it to the side of the road again, repeating this process over and over.

The soldiers were stunned. She looked so thin and petite, yet she was so strong and had such great perseverance, working for hours without stopping and even staying up for a whole day and night.

The boy was a bit less capable; he could only move stones the size of porcelain bowls. If they were bigger, someone would have to carry them.

It can only be said that Liu Yifei takes everything very seriously, while Qin Xuan is more flexible and prefers a protracted approach.

At noon, the team leader called Qin Xuan and Liu Yifei together: "Comrades, thank you for your help."

After saying that, he saluted the two of them again.

He then added, "All that's left here is to clean up. You can go to where you're needed more!"

"Okay! May I ask how far it is from here to Beichuan?" Qin Xuan asked.

Liu Yifei's face was flushed, and she looked somewhat tired.

“Beichuan? It’s forty or fifty kilometers from here. That’s where the disaster is most severe. You should just go to the outskirts and help out,” the team leader advised.

It's 40 or 50 kilometers, and it would take at least a day to walk there. By the time we got there, it would be dark.

"We understand, thank you, Captain!" Qin Xuan saluted in return.

The captain quickly returned the greeting.

So, just like on their journey to the West, the two of them climbed mountains and waded through rivers once again, supporting each other as they continued their journey.

Because Liu Yifei had exerted herself too much earlier, she had been walking with her stomach bulging and was exhausted after a short while. She was out of breath and waved her hand, saying, "I can't go on, I can't walk anymore."

"I told you to take it easy, but you wouldn't listen!" Qin Xuan had advised her before, seeing how hard she was working, that she needed to fight a war of attrition.

"Hey, stop talking, I can't move." Liu Yifei sighed. She didn't even have the strength to speak now, and all she wanted to do was find a place to lie down.

But there are rocks everywhere here, making it difficult to even walk, let alone lie down.

"Come on, I'll carry you."

Helpless, Qin Xuan walked up to her and squatted down, complaining, "You're so concerned about saving face in front of others, but you suffer in private."

Liu Yifei patted his back softly and said angrily, "I don't want you to carry me."

"Don't act like a spoiled princess. I won't carry you. We won't even walk a few miles before dark. Do you want to be alone with your partner in the middle of nowhere?" Qin Xuan said.

"That's really unpleasant to talk to," Liu Yifei snorted, then climbed onto his back.

Because both of them were wearing very little clothing, only thin fabric, Qin Xuan felt a softness in his back, especially near his spine.

It wasn't heavy, but the temperature was quite pleasant.

With Liu Yifei lying on his back, her arms gently wrapped around his neck, her hair brushing against his ears, and her breath hitting his neck, there was a kind of intimate tenderness.

Liu Yifei felt somewhat embarrassed. She could smell the masculine aura emanating from the boy, which made her blush and feel ashamed.

She is still very conservative.

The atmosphere was somewhat ambiguous; neither of them spoke, as if something was flowing within them.

And so, along the way, you could still see all sorts of rescue teams, some digging roads, some carrying out rescues, and others helping disaster victims escape.

The two of them would ask around, trying to find out where they were, what lay ahead, and if anyone was injured.

After walking for a while, I suddenly heard a faint voice saying, "Oh no, help..."

"It sounds like someone is calling for help, can you hear it?" Liu Yifei has keen hearing.

"I heard you." Qin Xuan nodded.
