Human beings are often unable to do many things that they want, including trivial things.
However, that does not mean we should give up.
‘It is important not to expect too much, but also try to do something about it.’
These are the words my father left me.
Just to be clear, my father is not dead.
He taught me this lesson when he went to Kushiro City in Hokkaido, far away from home.
That is why, as a high school student, I live alone in a cheap apartment in a provincial city, with my name “Akihara Haruhito” being written on the mailbox.
As my father said, even when I am in trouble, I always manage to do something about it.
I forced myself to enter a preparatory school and fell behind, but I have managed to avoid getting red marks.
When I confessed my love to my childhood friend who I thought was also in love with me, I was rejected, I was very upset. However, I somehow succeeded in getting back to being good friends with that childhood friend of mine.
So I should be able to handle the ongoing troublesome situation appropriately.
Even if it means I have to live with a girl with a few quirks.
☆
My high school is located about a ten-minute bus ride from the JR station.
Behind the school building, there is a large riverbed, giving it the atmosphere of a location for a famous school drama.
Although it is a public high school with no outstanding features, it is a reasonably advanced school with a high academic performance, so I had quite the difficult time with the entrance examinations.
As to why I chose this high school?
I wanted to go to the school with the girl I had known since childhood.
My childhood friend, Sasaki Natsuho, is quite cute, even without any prejudice.
Her short, clean-cut haircut is perfect for her cheerful and active personality, and her big, round eyes always sparkle with joy.
I liked Natsuho.
Then, in the spring of our third year of junior high school, Natsuho asked me to go to high school with her, and I agreed.
Natsuho was an honor student, while I was in the upper middle of the class.
So, although my grades were not high enough, I was still able to pass high school thanks to my hard work together with Natsuho’s help.
So far, so good.
Everything was smooth sailing.
Natsuho was kind to me, and after entering high school, we were in the same class and we also often went to school together.
On the way home, we would go to the movie theater near the station or even stop by Natsuho’s favorite coffee shop for a piece of cake.
Since we had known each other since childhood and lived near each other, we would go back and forth to each other’s houses and cook dinner for each other at night.
However, Natsuho was not very good at housework, so I was mostly always the one who cooked.
“Haruhito, your cooking is really delicious,” she used to say, after which she would always smile beautifully.
I never doubted that she liked me, too.
It was almost like I was in a relationship with her, so I thought at the time that it was time for me to make a proper confession.
Looking back on it now, I really was an idiot.
In June of my first year of high school, I confessed my feelings to Natsuho and she simply rejected me.
After eight months in high school, you gradually get to know the personalities of your classmates around you.
Some are popular, some are unpopular. Some are noisy, some are quiet.
Some are good at studying and are very dependable, while others are very active on the baseball team, even becoming the ace from the first year.
Then, what about me?
Nothing.
To put it simply, I am a colorless, transparent being.
I have done nothing to stand out.
I have no special skill to showcase.
I’m not a particularly popular person, but I have a few friends in my class, and I think I get along with people fairly well.
I thought about this during lunchtime in December, shivering in the cold.
Today is especially cold.
There are two heaters in the room, each of which is occupied by a group of flamboyant girls surrounding it.
I was not enjoying the benefits of the heaters at all.
In the midst of it all, in a corner of the classroom far away from the heaters, there was a girl reading a book, completely unperturbed.
I glanced at the girl.
Mikoto Rei.
That was her name.
However, Mikoto-san has another famous nickname.
And It is “Ice Goddess”.
There are two reasons why Mikoto Rei is called “Goddess.”
First, to put it simply, Mikoto Rei is a perfectly beautiful girl.
Mikoto’s long, straight hair shines with a beautiful silver color.
She is half-Japanese, and has a lovely face like a Western doll, but her shining blue eyes give her a slightly cold impression.
Many people have said that Mikoto-san is the most beautiful girl in the school.
In addition, she boasts the top class grades in our high school, which is a fairly high-level academic school as I said earlier.
Taking the other aspects into the table as well, I still can’t find any faults with her.
For this reason, many boys and even some girls started to call Mikoto-san the “Ice Goddess” out of respect and admiration.
Another reason Mikoto-san is called a goddess is that she seems unapproachable and has an impression of coldness.
During recess, she is always reading a book, and if you talk to her, she will respond, but she seems somewhat cold and reserved.
She doesn’t have any notable friends and seems to avoid other people.
All of my classmates, including myself, had been so shy that we had never really even talked to her.
Because of this unapproachability, everyone respects her and some also keeps themselves away from her.
Therefore, more than a few female students sarcastically refer to her as the “ice goddess” because she is like a god with a cold demeanor.
Either way, for me, Mikoto-san remained a distant presence.
“Hey, Haruhito? What are you looking at?”
I heard a bright and beautiful voice, and I turned around.
My classmate, Sasaki Natsuho, was sitting on the desk behind me.
Her white legs were peeking out from the skirt of her uniform.
She smiled at me and her short, beautiful hair swished softly.
Natsuho is my childhood friend, and the one who dumped me six months ago.
