"Muggle freshmen?"
"Yes, sir."
"A maximum of 100 Galleons per semester for a freshman loan. Give me your acceptance letter."
"Sir, can I exchange pounds for gallons?"
"Only new students are eligible, and the number is limited."
Never mind then. Jerry was originally planning to exchange pounds for gallons later.
Jerry handed his college acceptance letter to the fairy, and soon, the letter and a bag of Galleons were given to Jerry.
“You can go out now, Mr. Green.”
Um, are fairies really that efficient?
Jerry counted the Gallon in his hand, and after confirming that everything was in order, he left the counter.
"Professor, it's done. I didn't expect the fairies to be so efficient."
"Of course, people who deal with money are very efficient."
"Where do we go next, Professor?"
"Madame Malkin's Robes Shop, right next to Flourish and Blotts."
Diagon Alley isn't actually that big, and the two soon arrived at the robe shop.
"Welcome to Lady Malkin's Robes Shop." The speaker was a short, plump witch.
"Oh, it's Professor Dumbledore. Why are you bringing your students to buy school supplies this year?"
"As people get older, they want to travel around. I haven't had much to do lately, so I came to help Professor McGonagall."
"Is this the newborn this year? Please wait a moment, little one, I'll be right there to take your measurements."
“Yes, madam,” Jerry replied politely.
Besides Jerry, there were three other students in the robe shop: two boys and one girl, who were about the same age as Jerry and were probably also freshmen this year.
Judging from their appearance, they must be pure-blooded; they practically have pride written all over their faces. All of them have black hair, so they probably aren't Malfoys or his group.
Jerry has been in Diagon Alley for almost half a day now, and he hasn't run into a single important character yet.
Chapter 4 The Magic Wand
"Your turn, child," a short, plump witch said to Jerry with a beaming smile.
"Okay, ma'am."
Madam Malkin didn't use a wand; with a wave of her right hand, the measuring tape seemed to come alive and flew automatically toward Jerry to measure his size and clothing dimensions.
The whole process didn't take long, about fifteen minutes. After it was over, Mrs. Malkin told them to go buy other items first and come back to pick up the finished clothes later.
Flourish and Blotts is right next to Madam Malkin's Robes Shop. The bookshelves there are piled high with books, some even reaching the ceiling. Among them are leather-bound books as big as paving stones, tiny silver-covered books as small as stamps, books printed with countless strange symbols, and wordless books that have nothing written on them.
Some books are even stranger; when Jerry gets close, they will bark loudly—it's really eerie.
Jerry browsed around Flourish and Blotts several times, buying all the textbooks he needed, and he also bought a copy of "Hogwarts: A History of the School." He had long forgotten the original plot and planned to go back and flip through it to remember.
"Cough, cough, cough, what's that weird smell? It's so pungent!"
After Jerry and Dumbledore left the bookstore, they were about to buy a dry pot when they were choked by a pungent smell as soon as they entered Partridge's Cauldron Shop.
"Are you new students here to buy a cauldron? They're brewing potions in the backyard, and the smell is a bit strong," a middle-aged man behind the counter said to them.
Jerry couldn't stand the smell, so after buying the things, he quickly pulled Dumbledore out.
"Professor, do all potions smell this bad?"
"Of course not. In fact, some potions even smell different to different people. Jerry, you're a first-year student, so you'll have potions class. The professor is a potions master. If you study with him, you'll love the class."
Got it. Dumbledore didn't mean the potion was bad, but rather that the person who brewed it was incompetent.
Jerry nodded thoughtfully; he remembered that Snape was the Potions teacher in the first year.
He glanced at his Potions talent; it should be fine, right? The system even said he was exceptionally gifted. If all else failed, he'd just pretend to be dead in class; anyway, Snape's firepower this year was all focused on Harry.
Seeing that they had a lot of things, the owner of Partridge Cauldrons lent them a small cart, and on his recommendation, Jerry and Dumbledore arrived at Eeyore Owls.
Jerry wandered around inside but didn't buy anything, as he was really short of money and wanted to save some. Dumbledore said that the school had owls that mailed letters.
After spending half a day wandering around Diagon Alley, Jerry had bought almost everything he needed. Now all he needed was a magic wand.
Jerry followed Dumbledore to Ollivander's Wand Shop, yeah, the largest arms shop in the British wizarding world.
Ollivander Wand Shop is a quaint building. The shop is small; as soon as you push open the door, you see the counter, and behind it stands the shop owner, Ollivander, a professional wand maker.
"good afternoon!"
"Good afternoon, sir. I'm here to buy a magic wand."
"Of course, of course. New students at Hogwarts? What are their names? I need to confirm the list, otherwise the Ministry of Magic will come after me."
“Jerry Green, sir.”
"Okay, Mr. Green, which arm do you prefer?"
"Right hand."
After asking Ollivander, he started taking all sorts of measurements, even measuring Jerry's fingernails.
"Sir, as I get older, these measurements will change. Will these measurements still be correct then?"
"Don't worry, child, all of this is in my calculations," Ollivander said confidently.
"Come, try this one, apple tree, unicorn tail hair, eleven inches long, best suited for people with high goals and idealists, and counteracts black magic."
Jerry waved the wand, a faint light appeared at the tip, then nothing happened. Jerry felt that the wand was somewhat repelling him.
Ollivander snatched the wand from Jerry's hand and muttered to himself, "This one isn't for you..." before starting to rummage through it again.
"Try this one, black walnut, phoenix tail feathers, eleven and a half inches long. Black walnut is not as common as ordinary walnut wands; it seeks a master with keen intuition and strong insight."
Jerry took the wand, and unlike the previous wand, this one emitted a dazzling light from its tip after Jerry took it.
“Still not right.” Ollivander snatched the wand again and continued searching.
"Grapevine wood, dragon heartstring, eleven inches. Grapevine wood wand masters almost always have lofty ambitions and extraordinary vision. Give it a try."
Jerry took the wand and waved it. With a bang, a beam of intense light shot out from the tip of the wand, blasting a table in Ollivander's shop apart. Jerry was startled.
"I hope I won't have to pay for this myself," Jerry thought.
“He’s a picky customer!” Ollivander said excitedly.
"How about trying this one?"
……
"How about trying this one?"
……
Jerry tried more than a dozen wands, and several tables were blown up. Luckily, he had a repair charm, so he didn't have to pay for it.
Ollivander wiped the sweat from his brow and took a box from the top of the shelf.
"Try this one, one of my early works, yew, dragon heartstring, 12.5 inches. A rare and powerful combination."
"Yew wood doesn't choose mediocre or cowardly masters. It symbolizes death and resurrection, and yew wand owners maintain a particularly dark and terrifying reputation in duels and all curse-related spells. This wand is paired with the Dragon Heartstring..."
Jerry even suspected that Ollivander might have been a dark wizard in his youth, otherwise how could he have made a wand specifically designed for dark wizards?
And what do you mean? I, Jerry, am handsome, polite, and elegant. I am obviously not a good match for this magic wand!
Jerry took the wand from Ollivander; its surface was smooth and its overall color was purplish-red. The moment he held it, Jerry felt magic flow into the wand, making it as easy to control as an extension of his own arm.
Hmm... Surprisingly, it matches and works.
“That’s fantastic! That’s it! The wand has chosen its master!” Ollivander exclaimed excitedly from the side.
“Child, this wand is a bit special. It’s something I made when I was young. It’s been in the shop for decades and I haven’t found an owner yet. I hope you can use it well.” After saying that, Ollivander gave Jerry a deep look.
"Are you a young wizard from a wizarding family?" Ollivander asked curiously, looking at Jerry's appearance.
"No, I come from a Muggle orphanage."
Ollivander: "...an orphan with a yew wand..."
Chapter 5 My Turn, Drawing Cards
“Sincerely, seven Galleons.”
After paying, Jerry asked Ollivander, "Sir, is a wizard only allowed to have one wand? Can I buy a second one?"
In the Harry Potter world, not having a wand is like not having a gun in America, so Jerry wants to buy an extra one, one openly and one secretly.
"The Ministry of Magic only allows wizards to possess one wand, and they can only buy a new one if the previous one is damaged."
Got it, figure out a way to steal one while masked...
After getting the answer, Jerry left the wand shop.
Watching Jerry's departing figure, Ollivander felt uneasy and could only pray for Merlin's protection.
"Professor, I'm sorry to have kept you waiting. I didn't expect to spend so much time at the wand shop."
When Jerry came out, he saw Dumbledore sitting on a chair by the street, chatting with someone. The person got up and left when Jerry approached.
"It seems you're quite picky about wands," Dumbledore said with a smile.
"Yes, I looked at more than a dozen but none of them were suitable. Luckily, the last one was just right for me."
Jerry took out his shopping list, checked that he had bought everything, and then returned to Mrs. Malkin's shop. After trying on the clothes and finding that the size was right and there were no problems, he left.
After selling everything, it was already noon. Dumbledore invited him to lunch at the Leaky Cauldron. Although Jerry was reluctant, he accepted. The food wasn't very good; it was too sweet. However, Dumbledore seemed to like it.
After enjoying a pleasant lunch with the elderly man, the two left.
