When Nietzsche walked in, the smell of garlic was different from usual; it also had a slightly sour, pungent odor.
"The banquet tonight is still a while away, Quirinas, hurry up and change into something cleaner!" Flitwick pinched his nose and gagged a few times. "Did you fall into the toilet?"
Quirrell blinked and glanced nervously at Nietzsche.
"I've gone to gather herbs... You know, Sprout's greenhouse likes to use dragon...dung as fertilizer..."
Even with stuffy noses, they could still smell the odors during class; the garlic and pumpkin scents were unmistakable.
Nietzsche narrowed his eyes and, out of habit, looked the professor up and down. Quirrell noticed his gaze as well, so he quickly waved with an awkward laugh and hurried upstairs.
It was as if she didn't want to spoil their fun.
"Didn't he dislike Potions before?" Flitwick glanced at his retreating figure, muttering to himself as he turned his gaze to another student.
But Nietzsche knew that the professor hadn't told the whole story.
If you were to normally dig herbs from a greenhouse, the soil wouldn't be stuck to the sides of your shoes. Today's weather is cold and dry, so it couldn't be mud or water from the road. The only damp places outdoors are the Black Lake and... Forbidden Forest.
Did he go to the forbidden forest to dig for medicinal herbs?
Nietzsche walked up to the fifth floor while pondering.
Perhaps because all the young wizards wanted to experience the castle during the festival, Hermione was the only one in the library... so he happened to pick up a copy of "Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them" and happened to sit opposite Hermione.
He didn't say anything, just kept reading by himself, and the quiet atmosphere made Hermione feel like she was back in elementary school.
"Today is the first holiday at Hogwarts."
After a while, Hermione was the first to lose her composure.
"So?" Nietzsche looked up and gave her a strange look.
“Don’t you all like wearing those weird clothes and asking people for candy? The library…” She suddenly realized she couldn’t look at the other person with ordinary eyes, but still stubbornly said, “The library is not a suitable place to come right now.”
In fact, Hermione didn't absorb a single word.
She sat there for hours, staring at the words in the book, as if she could see the true nature of magic through those Latin words.
“Miss Granger, perhaps you haven’t noticed it yourself, but I still want to say it—since I’ve been sitting here for two hours and twenty-four minutes, you’ve only turned the pages three times, and one of those times was when you were turning back.”
"And what about you?" Hermione, caught out, simply stopped pretending, pushed the book forward, and said with a blush, "Look... look... I'm looking so carefully, did you even read the book?"
Nietzsche silently raised his head and stared into those chocolate-colored eyes.
Hermione glared back defiantly, and the two stared at each other across the table, as if whoever gave up first would lose.
Suddenly, a cough came from the end of the long table. Mrs. Pince pounded her chest violently. She had choked on her water while watching the duel between the two men. When she saw them turn around, she quickly waved her hand to signal them.
"Don't worry about me, you...you guys continue...continue..."
But after this interruption, they couldn't possibly rekindle the atmosphere.
The two pursed their lips, then finally laughed together.
“Why don’t you go…go for a walk with your friends?” Hermione said, her head down, her cheeks puffing out again. “Someone as popular as you would definitely get the most candy from the professors.”
Nietzsche seemed to have rejected her proposal.
"Usually on holidays like these, I stay inside and wait for Mrs. Hudson to bring up the candies I haven't given out yet. What about you?"
“Me?” Hermione looked sad, her eyes filled with envy. “On holidays like these, I usually just stay home and watch everyone else get candy…”
But before he could finish speaking, Nietzsche waved his wand and returned "Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them" to its original place. Mrs. Pins, at the end of the long table, watched Nietzsche get up and straighten his clothes, shaking her head and sighing.
In fact, she herself didn't know why she felt sorry.
Hermione looked at the empty seat across from her, listened to the cheerful sounds outside, and sighed.
The banquet may have already begun, and Mrs. Pince will be closing the library soon. She doesn't want to put the faculty and staff in a difficult position, because Hermione knows how precious this kind of festive entertainment is to them.
Suddenly, she felt something jumping around above her head. She reached out and grabbed it, only to find it was a blue frog candy.
“I almost forgot, Professor Flitwick gave me two. He said… this is a reward for never causing trouble in class before, and I heard it's the latest product from Honey Duke…”
Hermione turned around and found Nietzsche leaning against the oak door of the library, turning sideways and winking at her.
Clearly, he never left.
Upon seeing the taciturn Hermione, Nietzsche continued, "Do you expect me to stand at the door with a stack of books?"
She was obviously referring to the time she almost got transferred to another school. Hermione recognized the voice, but she deliberately turned around, put her hands on the back of the chair, leaned on the seat, and shouted back loudly in the library.
"Of course! I stood there waiting for a whole afternoon that day!!"
"Your Excellency Mrs. Pince, what time is it?"
Normally, a student shouting and yelling in the library would definitely be kicked out, but there are only three people here, including the librarian, so I decided to let it go.
Mrs. Pince walked up and took the book from Hermione's hands.
Watching the show is one thing, but participating in it is a completely different mindset.
“It’s already 6:30 in the evening.” She shoved Hermione from behind, winking at Nietzsche with her right eye. “Spare me, you two have been sitting here all afternoon, I want some pumpkin pie.”
Mrs. Pince: Wink~
Regardless of Hermione's reaction, he pushed her out, closed the door, and turned to leave.
"The afternoon is over, and I...I can't move the books now."
"Let's save it for next time then."
Bats fluttered their wings and flew around the menacing jack-o'-lantern, casting shadows that made the light source flicker. Nietzsche stood below, looking at the stiff Hermione, and a tremor ran through his chest.
The feeling, like a heart attack, was not painful at all, but it also brought an intense pleasure.
He coughed several times but couldn't calm down.
"I'm actually quite curious about these kinds of holidays..."
“Aha! You want to play this game!” Hermione seized the opportunity, her voice trembling slightly. “I can’t help it. If you really want to experience this childishness, I can play along.”
But in fact, her performance was the worst and most childish.
“Yes, Granger.” Nietzsche reluctantly took her arm. “So—please—come with me to observe.”
Thus, two lonely souls, unable to connect with their peers, collided.
While the two were still slowly making their way down from the fifth floor, Quirrell had already searched all the rooms on the first floor. The banquet had begun, and everyone was gathered in the auditorium to celebrate.
Not a single student abandoned the delicious food and the ever-changing dark clouds above the auditorium.
Even Filch couldn't bear to leave.
“Professor Quirrell?” Mrs. Pince emerged from the bottom of the stairs. “What are you still doing here?”
"I'm just making a quick inspection. Please go inside; the banquet has been going on for a while now."
He breathed a sigh of relief; this should be the last person.
Quirrell muttered a few incantations, and suddenly there were several banging sounds coming from the left corridor of the hall. As the wooden planks shattered, the moonlight shone in and cast a huge shadow.
"Repel them immediately!"
He pulled out his wand and rushed over, but the spell just bounced off.
Immediately afterwards, with a few roars, a giant club flew out from the end of the corridor. It wasn't very fast, but he watched in disbelief as the tree-like club gradually grew larger in his eyes.
If this solid wood and its weight were to fall on a person, they would certainly either die or be maimed.
"Armor protection."
Although he blocked some of the force, Quirrell still felt a sharp pain in his chest. He forced himself to sit up and staggered as he burst through the auditorium doors, shattering the cheerful atmosphere.
He walked all the way to the head table before leaning against it.
“Troll…” He glanced at the four long tables filled with people, then gasped in horror, “Going down to the basement… I thought you knew that you came in from the corridor of classroom eleven.”
After saying that, he collapsed to the ground and fainted.
His face was down, with a faint smile on his lips.
Kerr overlooked one thing: although he had been patrolling from the third-floor office all the way to the lobby without finding anyone, he missed Hermione and Nietzsche, who had just come down from the fifth-floor library.
They were greeted not by friends, nor by the cheerful laughter echoing from the auditorium, but by...
As soon as Nietzsche entered the hall, he saw a colossal creature, about seven meters tall, with dull, gray skin like a rock, and a small, bumpy head on its hill-like body.
No wonder...no wonder Snape always liked to use trolls to insult people, because his brain was really small.
But it also saw Nietzsche and Hermione coming down from upstairs. The troll walked to where Quirrell had just gotten up, picked up the stick it had thrown, and even with its size, it could only drag the stick along.
"Is this...is this a Halloween prank?" Hermione's legs trembled, her hands tightly clutching the blue frog candy.
"Hello?" Nietzsche tried to greet him, but the only response was the giant's roar, accompanied by a bit of sticky saliva. "Looks like it isn't; this is a real mountain giant..."
The giant glanced at the little thing under its eyelids, and when it saw the black school uniform on its body, its little head immediately made a decision—this was the same outfit that the little person had just been wearing!
So he immediately dragged the wooden stick and rushed towards the two of them.
"run!"
Nietzsche and Hermione simultaneously warned each other.
Chapter Thirty-Nine: The Serpent's Fangs and the Lion's Heart
Quirrell, of course, couldn't possibly stand in the auditorium and watch the students at the four tables, counting them one by one from first to seventh grade to see if anyone was missing.
That's why he had to take precautions and patrolled the area around the first floor several times.
"How did an adult mountain troll end up in a school?"
Professor Sprout hurriedly dropped the food, ran to the unconscious Quirrell, knelt down to check on him, and took a small bottle of medicine from his pocket and poured it into his mouth.
In just a few seconds, Quirrell's slightly sunken chest returned to normal.
Everyone was talking to each other in fear, nervously watching the hall doors. The noise was deafening, and Dumbledore had to call out several times to quiet the students down.
Finally, Dumbledore pressed his wand against his throat.
"Quiet!" The amplification spell amplified his deep voice to an extreme degree, so loud that the students below could feel their cups trembling. "Prefects of each college, take attendance and immediately lead everyone back to their dormitories!!"
This news is really disappointing.
