Even without power armor, Koz, who was rather thin, was terrifying when he ran at full speed.
I suspect that if I stood in front of the Primarch, I would probably be smashed to pieces.
The strange insect was clearly building up a plasma cannon, and its preparation posture was very obvious. Realized electric arcs crackled and popped out, illuminating the surrounding air.
Before the second plasma cannon was fired, Koz had already rushed in front of the bug.
His charge, in its final moments, resembled a headfirst descent through a vertical pipe, his body parallel to the ground, reaching the finish line solely through the sheer force of his steel-like knees.
Then, grabbing the insect's forelimbs with both hands, he snapped them off with a loud crack and used them as a weapon to smash them hard against the insect's face.
Aaron, in a panic, shouted from behind, "Plug in the gun holes! What's the point of shooting these bugs in the head if they don't have any self-awareness?!"
Upon hearing the sound, Koz changed his attack direction, leaped high into the air, and, braving the flashing arcs of electricity on the insect's body, inserted his forelimbs into the cannon barrel.
Whether it was from pain or damage to the organs responsible for plasma energy, the insect's already unstable body, having lost its forelimbs, became even more precarious.
Finally, Koz plunged almost half of his body into the enemy's cannon organ, tearing him apart from the inside out.
The unrestrained energy ignited the insect's body, mixing with the surrounding smoke and dust to obscure Aaron's vision.
When Aaron arrived, he saw Koz standing on the insect's corpse in a victory pose, waiting for his brother to come and see this.
"Come down quickly, your fair face is all blackened by the wind, just like Xiao An climbing over the chimney."
Aaron laughed and scolded, "How come Coz, this little brother of yours, is like he's never grown up?"
Although the fourth son is awkward, he is now striving for the throne, which means he has found his purpose in life.
Koz seemed to be wandering aimlessly, since he had already seen the bright future at the end, and it didn't matter which way he went now.
"That's why ghosts are scary because they all have pale faces."
Koz hooked his feet onto the insect's corpse, hanging upside down, his hands folding his sleeves together like a large bat.
Aaron thought the little bat made from the small hand was cuter; the big bat was really creepy.
Just as he was about to start complaining, he heard gravel flying behind him, and a strangely shaped four-wheeled vehicle emerged from the ground, from which a person jumped out.
Although the vehicle has four wheels, it looks as narrow as a coffin, with its gray-white paint covered in scratches on both sides, barely maintaining its shape and stability.
It's worrying that even a slight bump could knock the outer shell off.
This thing just drove straight up from underground, but I didn't see any ground-breaking equipment in front of it.
Could it be some kind of advanced technology?
It's just that it's really shabby. It could fall apart with a single collision, like a plastic four-wheel drive car with loose screws going head-to-head with a car equipped with a powerful motor and metal ramming blades.
Aaron felt that he was being influenced more and more by his father. Even though he had never seen any of the things his father was talking about, he was able to make connections.
The man was dressed in tattered clothes, which must have looked quite stylish when they were in good condition. He had a pair of dark, mirrored goggles hanging on his forehead, but he wasn't wearing them in front of his eyes.
Without a mask, his exposed skin appeared rough and disheveled; compared to the travel-worn look, he was remarkably clean.
Aaron couldn't say what the outfit was called, but he thought it looked pretty cool.
Coz rolled to the ground and reached out to protect Aaron.
Before the two could speak, they saw the man from the car stagger over, calling out:
"By the Divine Emperor, there are still survivors! You're incredibly lucky to have encountered the very insects you blew up yourself. Get in the vehicle quickly; the last spaceship will evacuate in seventeen hours. After that, there will be no more rescues."
He had a nameplate hanging on his clothes, seemingly indicating he was a retired Imperial soldier, permitted to keep it as a memento. This was quite rare; every soldier in the Empire who could retire normally was a rarity.
The name and blood type are laser-engraved on it: "Ovid Bolton, type III plasma".
The empire no longer had the resources to distinguish the soldiers' blood types. The treatment of the wounded was both advanced and backward, and could only roughly distinguish a few types, using artificial blood plasma produced in some unknown way to infuse them.
Those reports auditing the toxic side effects of blood plasma would never reach the Ministry of Military Affairs or the desk of some high lord.
Because the wounded who are rescued are put back into the battlefield as soon as they can still move, they don't live long enough for the aftereffects to develop.
Even the chance to receive the first treatment was already a miracle from the God Emperor.
However, this Ovid appears to be whole and without any metal prosthetics, and his eyes are filled with eyeballs rather than being inlaid with glass balls or cathode ray tubes.
It's somewhat understandable that such a person could appear in the ruins after the insect swarm's rampage, rescuing people everywhere.
Perhaps the war he witnessed during his service was even more terrifying than this.
Coz looked at Aaron, who nodded and whispered his judgment.
Marum had recounted much about Imperial military affairs and also had some knowledge of mortal armies.
The two brothers decided to follow along and observe first, as they would inevitably come into contact with other people in order to obtain more information.
As the two approached, they saw a dozen or so passengers huddled in their seats, looking numb, but their eyes only glanced at Aaron and his companion.
The bald young man was completely ignored, while Koz received more attention because of the Primarch's height.
However, there are so many demi-humans within the Empire, maybe he's just a handsome Oglin.
Coz didn't have a suitable seat and had to squat in the trunk, looking more like a turtle than a bat.
Aaron sat at his feet, leaning against his brother's legs, making as much space as possible.
Ovid didn't ask about Coz's size. He started the vehicle and returned the way he came. It really was an engineering vehicle that moved forward by digging underground, using the hot melt arm at the front to melt the soil.
The outer shell is heat-insulating, and the soil gradually cools down after vehicles pass by, allowing the tunnel to be reburied.
This also prevents it from being discovered by some burrowing insects.
However, this is only a temporary measure. Once the insects enter the post-war cleanup and biomass collection phase, they will truly dig three feet into the ground in a physical sense, covering the entire surface structure.
The vehicle traveled for several hours, during which time not a single person spoke, and no new survivors were encountered.
They seemed to be among the last living people.
Aaron observed the numbness on the faces of these people. Each of them had witnessed the disaster brought about by the arrival of the Tyranid swarm and the terrible fate suffered by their fellow humans.
"Koz, do you know why living beings are so numb? What the Chaos Gods need is extreme emotion, not this kind of numbness."
Aaron asked in a low voice, knowing that Coz could hear him.
But Aaron didn't understand why he asked his brother that question.
Coz lowered his head and said:
"This is another kind of numbness, like prey with its throat bitten by a predator, life is slipping away, everything has become meaningless, and even pain cannot make them groan any longer."
"I guess the Tyranids' slaughter is not accompanied by any emotional catharsis. They are more like a life-harvesting machine. The spinning blades hang high and approach, and everywhere there are gruesome scenes of their own kind being cut apart. After the extreme fear, nothing will be left."
Aaron tried to imagine this scene, even trying to put himself in the shoes of a deer that had been swallowed by a crocodile, with only its neck and head still outside, and was still breathing.
Humans have witnessed such scenarios more than once in their life course, and one day they will experience them themselves.
"It's tough. Just how many enemies will Guilliman have to fight?"
After he finished his reflections, the drilling vehicle reached its destination.
A huge meteorological satellite launch platform was temporarily replaced by a carrier rocket.
They will launch in ten hours. They have only one chance to enter outer orbit, successfully dock with the ships in space, and then evacuate.
The next imperial ships to arrive here will only find a barren landscape, and by the time they arrive with the extermination order, it will be too late.
"Without tents or beds, and without food, if we can hold on a little longer, we'll be safe once we're in the air."
Ovid got out of the car, his voice still quite loud. He was one of the few people who wasn't numb; in fact, he was somewhat optimistic.
Although his rescue efforts would be described by Imperial officials as simply saving a bunch of corpses.
Chapter 516 Encounter with the Black Legion (3K)
Ovid did not specifically guide people on where to rest, but simply reminded them not to approach the launch area.
He was clearly very familiar with the place. He picked up the tool kit he had prepared in advance, rubbed his face, and walked toward the launch area.
Could it be that he alone can complete the entire launch process for this thing?
Coz helped Aaron out of the car, stretched his arms and legs, and said in a seemingly casual manner:
"I heard that Fourth Brother is often crammed into the luggage compartment of transport ships and flies around. It must feel really awkward. Go and try to get some information out of this Ovid. I'll wander around."
"This guy seems pretty good. It's already quite an achievement for a veteran to retire, but he actually knows so much about engineering machinery technology. He's a real talent."
Aaron scratched his ear, looked at the huge but extremely unsafe launch pad, and at the thing inside that looked like a rocket lying at an angle, and said:
"But can this really fly? And—am I really that good at extracting information from other people? That should be your job, Father always says you're good at interrogating."
Koz relaxed his arms, stretched his waist a few times, and gave a pale smile, saying:
“I can make him reveal any information I want, but it will come with immense pain. I’m good at torture, brother. This is far too cruel for an Imperial veteran who is dedicated to rescuing them.”
Aaron could only sigh and say, "Alright, but be careful when you wander around, and don't try to scare anyone."
Kurtz feigned profundity and said, "It has always been this world that terrifies me; I am merely a traveler in the darkness. Perhaps the bright future I see is just the faint light in the little match girl's hand. By the way, why did Father say that the little girl in the story should have burned down the whole town? While she was at it, wearing sunglasses, with a cigar in her hand, flicking some ash into other people's eyes. If the protagonist of the story had such fighting power, she would never have been reduced to selling matches on a winter night."
Aaron wished he could jump up right now and give his younger brother a flick on the forehead.
"That old man told you a lot of strange stories?"
Koz shook his head and said, "This is your treatment, brother. It's just that another me happened to overhear it, haha. Let's get down to business. Hopefully, this rocket isn't the last match to go out."
Aaron thought he needed to find some time to give his brothers some psychological counseling, but then he wondered if this behavior would stifle their natural instincts.
Just like a father, he only hopes that the Primarchs will fulfill their intended roles.
Thinking of this, Aaron quickly focused his mind; he couldn't afford to become more and more like an old man.
He took a deep breath and greeted Ovid:
"Ovid, I also know some mechanical principles, I can help you out!"
According to Holmes himself, the mechanical knowledge he learned from Holmes basically covered the basic industrial technologies that could be accomplished by human labor and appropriate tools.
This tilted rocket doesn't look like it uses any advanced technology; it's still the most primitive chemical fuel propulsion.
Given enough time to disassemble it, Aaron could even try to go back to his own time and handcraft a space rocket.
Of course, this is on the premise that his father is willing to help smelt steel of the appropriate strength; otherwise, Aaron would have to start all over again to climb the technology tree and complete all the preliminary processes of basic industrialization.
Ovid turned his head and saw him using his rough hands to lift a metal frisbee almost as big as his torso, with a coil of cable wrapped around his arm. He chuckled.
"Look at your skinny arms and legs, what kind of skills do you know? Don't meddle here. Only I can fix this old buddy of mine."
