Brush Up Your Proficiency
#104 - Detachment
Wang Hao took a taxi back to his previous rented apartment. He had arranged with his sister to pack up their belongings together for the move.
Standing downstairs in the building he had walked past countless times, Wang Hao couldn't help but feel a mix of emotions. Looking at the dilapidated building that had held his joys and sorrows over the past few years, he felt a unique sentiment as he was about to leave.
Walking upstairs and opening the familiar door, he immediately heard his sister's muttering: "This has to go, and this too. They're still usable, can't waste them."
Wang Hao smiled softly, the melancholy he felt was diluted by his sister's adorable behavior. He walked into the room, his face full of smiles as he watched his sister's busy figure.
He was about to go back to his room to change clothes and join the packing, when his sister seemed to hear the noise. She turned her head and saw Wang Hao's completely new image, and immediately exclaimed.
"Bro, is that you? Is that my dear brother? I almost didn't recognize you in that outfit!" Wang Lan exaggerated her performance, as if afraid she wasn't expressing herself enough. She even deliberately took two steps back to show her surprise.
Wang Hao smiled and said, "What's wrong? Don't you recognize me anymore?"
"Wow, bro, you look so handsome today!" Wang Lan said excitedly.
"Thank you for the compliment," Wang Hao replied with a smile.
"Stop fooling around, I'm going to change clothes, let's pack together!" Wang Hao said, about to return to his bedroom, but was stopped by Wang Lan.
"Wait a minute, bro, don't rush to change clothes, let me take a good look at you." Wang Lan grabbed Wang Hao's hand and carefully examined his new look.
"What's there to see, hurry up and let go," Wang Hao said helplessly.
"Wait a minute, I'll take a picture and send it to Mom and Dad, so they know how handsome their son is!" Wang Lan took out her phone without explanation and took a series of photos of Wang Hao, completely ignoring the helplessness and embarrassment on his face.
Wang Hao stood there, like a helpless doll at Wang Lan's disposal. He tried to protest, but Wang Lan just pretended not to see it, and continued taking pictures with a smile.
When Wang Lan finally finished, Wang Hao returned to his room as if escaping.
Wang Lan then revealed a mischievous smile, sent the photos she had just taken to her parents, and attached a message:
"Brother went to Cheng Yufei's house today with this look. Everything is going smoothly, our reporter will follow up with the report."
Afterwards, she posted Wang Hao's photo on her WeChat Moments, with the caption: "Seeking marriage!"
After doing all this, Wang Lan hummed a little tune contentedly and continued packing.
Wang Hao, free from his sister's clutches, calmed down and began to sort out his own belongings. As more and more things were taken out, he realized just how much he had accumulated over the years.
He couldn't help but sigh, he hadn't realized there was so much! Wang Hao was surprised by his collection as he sorted, as if his life had been filled with these things without him realizing it.
This made him think of "Decluttering".
Most people simply understand "Decluttering" as throwing things away. In fact, "Decluttering" is just a philosophy of life, which aims to simplify life and improve the quality of life by discarding unnecessary items and emotions.
Throwing things away is just a form. The inner meaning is to let people give up their attachment to things, learn to let go of past regrets, cherish the present, and not over-worry about the future.
"Xiaolan, let's just pack the essentials. Those other things that we think we can use, but don't need right now, let's just leave them. Let's start a new life, traveling light!"
Wang Hao's voice echoed in the room, as if saying a final goodbye to the house and the things in it.
"Got it!" Cheng Yufei responded verbally, but her hands didn't hesitate at all, still keeping whatever she thought was usable, showing no sign of "letting go".
In her opinion, every item was necessary. The frugal habits she had developed since childhood made it impossible for her to easily declutter.
After Wang Hao discarded some unnecessary items, he quickly completed the packing.
When he went to see his sister, Wang Lan said that she was almost done packing, but when Wang Hao saw the mountain of luggage in his sister's room, he couldn't help but cover his face and laugh.
Wang Lan was like a hamster hoarding food, her petite body and the large luggage forming a stark contrast!
Every time it was time to pay the rent, if Wang Hao forgot or delayed, the landlord never urged him. This tolerance and understanding made Wang Hao feel very comfortable.
When Wang Hao informed the landlord that he planned to move out, the landlord just gave a faint "Oh" and then hung up the phone.
Immediately afterwards, Wang Hao received the refunded rent from the landlord, along with a message asking him to leave the key under the doormat at the door.
Wang Hao knew that this landlord was easy to talk to and wouldn't find various reasons to deduct his deposit like other landlords, but he didn't expect this landlord to be so straightforward, even transferring the deposit directly without even coming to see the current state of the house.
This made Wang Hao feel very surprised and touched, because he had encountered too many landlords for whom returning the deposit was more difficult than ascending to heaven.
But this landlord was different, seemingly not caring about this small amount of money. This contrast made Wang Hao feel that the distance between people was sometimes truly worlds apart.
Adhering to the principle of "You are benevolent, and I won't be stingy either", Wang Hao immediately ordered an on-site cleaning service, spending half of the deposit to clean the entire house spotless.
Then, he recorded a video of the cleaned house and sent it to the landlord, officially ending the move-out.
"Oh, this kid is quite polite!" A middle-aged man playing chess under a tree in the park muttered to himself as he looked at the video popping up on his phone.
Although the middle-aged man's goodwill towards Wang Hao increased, he didn't pay much attention to it, but continued to focus on the chess game.
"Hey, hey, you made a mistake, you should have played here!" The middle-aged man excitedly directed the chess player.
"Dad, Mom told you to go back for dinner, she's said it several times, hurry up and come back with me!" A college student-looking girl shouted at the middle-aged man, her tone full of command.
The tall middle-aged man wasn't annoyed, just cheerfully greeted the people next to him, and then happily chased after his daughter.
