Cannot Escape the Devil

Chapter 17 Part 1. A Strange woman

Despite the urgent footsteps, Reibene packed his luggage leisurely. The rest of the Priests from the inspection team were hastily packing in response to Reibene’s sudden departure. It seemed incomprehensible why he suddenly woke up in the early dawn and prepared for departure. The urgent footsteps gradually got closer. Soon after, the door opened, and a priest entered.

“It’s an Emergency! An intermediate level devil appeared in Riverarden. The damage is serious!”

The priests who were packing their luggage stopped at the urgent cry, astonished.

“What nonsense is that? Are you saying that an intermediate devil appeared in the wall?”

“Yes. Riverarden has requested assistance.”

 The priests began to flutter around in skepticism. If that was true, it was a grave issue. A devil appearing inside the wall and neglecting it could cause critical damage not only to August but also to other provinces. So, it was appropriate to deal with it quickly. If the plague started inside the wall, it would be a great disaster that could not be reversed. Nevertheless, unlike other priests who were agitated, Reibene was calm.

 “Bishop, shouldn’t you hurry up and go for support?”

“That’s right. It would be a disaster if the plague spreads.”

Every priest was obliged to defend and protect the world within the wall. This was the duty of a large organization called the Church, and no reason can intervene. The same was true in political issues. Even though Grand Duke Kabelheider and the Church did not get along, but if a problem related to the devil arose, the Church should intervene and deal with it. When the plague begins, it will be a threat to the entire territory, and it will soon become an uncontrollable disaster. But Reibene decided outside of common sense.

 “We’ll pretend we haven’t heard anything about this situation. We’re done with our inspection anyway, and we’re going to go on our next tour a little earlier than usual.”

“You mean that you would just leave the intermediate devil that appeared here?”

“That’s ridiculous! What if there is a plague outbreak here? Once the plague occurs, it is irreversible.”

 A fierce protest from the priests followed. Nevertheless, Reibene was determined.

 “Don’t forget our duty. There are still many patients left who need our help. What will you do next if you get involved working here and having problems? There are still many territories left for us to look at, and all we have to do is finish the rest of the tour safely.”

“But…”

“There are monasteries and nuns here in August, so why should we have to work for August? We don’t know anything, and we haven’t been briefed, so we can leave right now. It’s something we don’t have to be involved in.”

The priests exchanged a quivering expression. Clearly, there was a stark difference between knowing the problem and ignoring it. This time, his decision to leave the manor, pretending to know nothing, was political. However, the boss’s words were the law. No one could argue with Reibene’s decision, as he was the head of the team. Also, his words have some sense to them.

 “When you’ve packed everything, we will get moving.”

 At Reibene’s words, the priests carried their loads and lined up. A crowd held torches at each side. Reibene laughed triumphantly, recalling Asaya and Edwin, taking the lead.

 “That’s good.”

If Edwin couldn’t deal with the devil and a plague broke out, that proved he was incompetent. He was a diligent lord, so he had to take care of it. If he couldn’t even do that much, then he was just useless. Reibene was barely able to hold back his laughter from coming out. The priests who stood behind him shook their heads at Reibene, who seemed to have a transparent mind.

They went out of the village secretly at the early dawn, when everyone was asleep, leaving such annoyance behind.
