Chapter 76 Espionage Case, Peggy Carter
In the early morning of June 6, 1944, the largest amphibious landing operation in human history was launched by Allied airborne forces.
More than 2,400 transport planes dropped three airborne divisions, totaling more than 35,000 paratroopers, into the depths of the coast, more than ten kilometers away.
But back in London, a squad of American military police suddenly stormed into the suburban estate that Josie had bought less than a week ago.
"Sir, what brings you here to trespass on private property in the middle of the night?" Josie, awakened from her sleep, calmed Vito and his men, who were confronting the military police, and then asked the officer in charge.
"Excuse me for disturbing you, Your Excellency Kahn. This is an order from Colonel Chester Philip of the Strategic Scientific Corps. There is an important case of theft of military secrets, and we need your cooperation in the investigation!" the officer in charge said respectfully.
Unlike the notorious military police of other countries, the U.S. military police have been known for their mild attitude since their inception.
This is evident from the fact that during the entire Second World War, the U.S. military experienced more than 50,000 deserters and more than 10,000 cases of soldier misconduct.
However, only 49 were ultimately sentenced to death, and only one unfortunate soul was actually executed.
It could be said to be the worst example of the world's laxity... Of course, this laxity is only internal.
Therefore, the military police officers treated Josh, one of their own with a rather special identity, very well.
But... the theft of military secrets? And it's related to the Strategic Science Corps?
Josie felt a little confused. Apart from his two encounters with Captain America, he didn't seem to have any connection with the Strategic Scientific Corps.
"Was it the theft of secrets from that Strategic Scientific Corps? I don't recall having any contact with them!" Josie asked the officer.
"Sir, I was just following orders and don't know the specifics, but I heard it seems to be related to that big star under your command!" The military police captain hesitated for a moment before revealing the information to Josie.
My starlet? Whitney?
Josie had an epiphany.
Damn, could this woman be a spy for the Russians or the Mustache?
No wonder he was so eager to come to the front lines to offer his condolences, and once he arrived, he immediately mingled with Howard Stark, the most important scientist in the Strategic Scientific Corps.
This is absolutely a disaster I've been caught in.
“I understand, but before I go with you, I need to verify your identities!” Having understood the specifics, Josie didn’t say anything more and prepared to cooperate with the investigation.
His relationship with Whitney was not deep; aside from their employment relationship, they had almost no personal interactions and were not afraid of being investigated.
Even if the Strategic Science Legion wanted to deliberately provoke them, they would have to consider the impact, so the problem wouldn't be too big.
I just don't know what military secret Whitney stole that made the Strategic Scientific Corps mobilize so much.
But before going with the military police, he still had to confirm their identities. Although it was unlikely, what if they were imposters?
"Of course!" The military police captain replied without hesitation, stating his unit number, rank, and name.
Josie, on the other hand, made a direct phone call to General McGinnis.
It wasn't that Josie was deliberately showing off, but rather that most of the officers he knew, such as Colonel Ross and other senior officers, were probably busy commanding the front-line battle and would be difficult to contact at this time.
Even logistics officers wouldn't have an easy time at this time.
As for the lieutenants and captains, forget about them. They're probably drifting at sea right now, waiting to be machine-gunned. Who knows how many of them will even make it back?
Only General McGinnis, who has not yet been reinstated, should be relatively free.
"Josh, give the phone to the officer in charge, I'll talk to him!" General McGinnis took the call very seriously after learning about the situation.
"Sir, General McGinnis wants to speak with you!" Josie handed the phone to the military police captain as instructed.
Upon hearing General McGinnis's name, the military police captain was clearly very surprised and immediately took the phone with great respect.
"Yes...yes...sir, I know what to do!" After responding to the phone, the military police captain handed it back to Josie and saluted. "Sorry to disturb your rest, sir. Since General McGinnis is vouching for you, we'll be leaving now."
After saying that, he turned and left with his men without looking back, as if someone was chasing them.
"They're leaving already?" Vito, standing to the side, was somewhat bewildered.
He knew that his own military police were good-natured, but their withdrawal without a word was still a bit outrageous.
"Hehe, in any country, these veteran generals who have been in the military for who knows how many years are all quite cunning. Alright, go back and rest. I doubt anyone will come before dawn," Josie said with a smile after ending her call with General McGinnis.
Sure enough, she slept soundly until dawn. Around eight o'clock in the morning, after Josie had finished breakfast, someone came to her door again.
And they were no longer military police, but rather intelligence personnel from the Scientific Strategic Corps itself.
"Let them in!" Josie, who was drinking tea in the living room, instructed her subordinates.
At first, he didn't pay much attention to the visitors, but when the three officers entered the living room, Josie's eyes flickered slightly.
"Captain Carter, I didn't expect it to be you!" Before the other party could speak, Josie greeted the female officer leading the group of three.
That's right, the person leading the team this time was none other than Captain America's lover, Peggy Carter.
"Mr. Kahn knows me?" Carter was quite surprised to hear Josie greet him.
Although Carter and Captain America should have been very close by this time, she mostly served as the intelligence liaison officer for the Howling Commandos and did not often operate with them. However, after Captain America's plane crash, this female officer served as the commander of the Howling Commandos and participated in many military operations.
So Carter wasn't there during the few times Josh met with Captain America.
Naturally, she didn't have much interaction with Josie.
“Of course, I’m fairly familiar with Captain Rogers, and I know he’s a big fan of English roses!” Josie winked at Peggy Carter and joked.
It must be said that Captain America has a very good eye for talent.
This Ms. Carter, while not exceptionally beautiful, is certainly well-endowed, a 32DD.
That's right, two Ds.
This is the American and British standard.
American English is represented by F, and British English is represented by E.
In other words, Ms. Carter's starting price is at least E.
I really want to try it out... Josie couldn't help but glance at it a few more times.
Hearing Josie's teasing, Carter's expression immediately became a little unnatural, but fortunately, she had experienced this kind of situation many times before and quickly recovered.
“I didn’t expect Mr. Kahn to know Steve. I imagine our conversation will be quite pleasant,” Carter said with a slight smile.
“Of course, I’ll answer anything you know!” Josie gestured for the three of them to sit down and talk.
"So, Mr. Josh, may I ask where you went and who you met on June 3rd and 5th?" Carter asked without any ceremony, sitting down as he began his questioning.
Chapter 77 News from the Front
“Ms. Carter, would you mind if I asked what Whitney actually stole? After all, she’s my employee. If she did break military law, you can do whatever you want with her. But if she’s been framed, I’ll have to take responsibility for her!” Josie asked in return after answering Peggy Carter’s series of questions.
“I’m very sorry, Mr. Kahn, but I can’t say too much about the details… As for Ms. Whitney, we just need her to cooperate with the investigation. If we can confirm that she is innocent, we will release her.” Perhaps because Josie knew Captain America, Peggy Carter, though tight-lipped, still revealed some information about Whitney.
The implication is that Whitney is currently only a strong suspect and has not been convicted.
"Hahaha, what's there to keep secret, Josie? Can you believe it? They say that the thing your actress is trying to steal is a nightlight!" Just then, a hearty voice came from the doorway; it was General McGinnis who had arrived.
“General, the matter of the Night Light is a top secret of the Strategic Scientific Legion. Isn’t it inappropriate for you to make it public like this?” Carter, with his tough personality, couldn’t help but question McGinnis’s words.
"Hmph, what kind of bullshit secret is that to me? Besides, Josie isn't an outsider to our Army!" General McGinnis said disdainfully. "Don't think only that playboy knows how to make those kinds of inventions. Let me tell you, under Mr. Kahn's leadership, our Army has developed a new type of agent with full combat significance. As for your nightlights, even a dog would shake its head in disbelief!"
Carter's expression turned sour upon hearing McGinnis's words, but he was more surprised than anything else, surprised by the drug that McGinnis mentioned, which was the one that Josie was leading the research on.
“General, Mr. Kahn, may I ask you for more information about this potion?” Carter couldn’t help but ask.
"Hmph! What? You suspect we copied the nightlight? This is not something you can know. Go back and ask your superior!" McGinnis reprimanded him without any politeness.
McGinnis's attitude embarrassed Carter, but McGinnis was a general, and an American general at that. What could she, a temporary worker from the British military, do?
"General, I think we should be gentler with the lady!" Seeing Carter's embarrassment, Josie timely smoothed things over. After all, he and Captain America were acquaintances, and he wouldn't let Carter lose face.
"Haha, you're right. Alright, Mr. Kahn and I have something to discuss. Ms. Carter, if you don't have anything else, perhaps you could give us some private time?" General McGinnis was clearly in a good mood and didn't seem displeased by Josie's interruption. Instead, he lowered his voice to appease her, but the implication of dismissing her was still there. At least he didn't embarrass Carter.
"Mr. Kahn, thank you for your cooperation. We won't bother you any longer!" Seeing that McGinnis's attitude was no longer so bad, Carter also put aside his emotions, forced a smile, and said goodbye to Josie.
Josie nodded, without saying much.
"What? You've taken a fancy to this woman? Not surprising. Even though she's covered up, you can still tell she has a stunning figure. If I were younger, I would definitely be tempted too!" Watching Carter's swaying figure disappear into the distance, General McGinnis patted Josie on the shoulder with a mischievous smile.
"General, you're overthinking it. I just have a pretty good relationship with Captain Rogers," Josie said with a smirk.
“Steve Rogers? And this woman?” McGinnis was taken aback and asked in surprise.
Although he had previously been in contact with the Strategic Scientific Corps, the matter between Captain America and Carter was quite secretive, and outsiders didn't know much about it.
“That’s right, they knew each other before Steve was modified,” Josie nodded.
“I see. Then it seems we should be more lenient with her.” McGinnis nodded. Although Captain America has only ever held the rank of captain, with his repeated victories leading the Howling Commandos in Europe, his importance has risen to a strategic level, far surpassing that of McGinnis, the dismissed, figurehead general.
"Would you like something to drink?" Josie asked.
"Whiskey, do you have any?" McGinnis didn't stand on ceremony. He knew that his partner, Shen, was incredibly resourceful... If nothing unexpected happened, he would be able to return to his original position after Normandy, so his relationship with Josie wouldn't be an employer-employee relationship in the short term. However, because of the potion, he still regarded Josie as an important partner.
Whether he can advance further before the war ends probably depends on Josie.
“Of course!” Josie walked to the liquor cabinet, took out a bottle of unpackaged whiskey, poured a glass, handed it to McGinnis, and then asked, “What’s the specific situation?”
"Tsk, good wine, where is it from?" McGinnis took a sip and smacked his lips to savor the taste.
"Hehe, it's just a homemade whisky, but the ingredients are a bit special. If you like, you can take a couple of bottles back with you. Anyway, you know I don't drink much," Josie said with a slight smile. This whisky was actually brewed in Westeros using the technology he provided, and the ingredients were top-quality barley and spring water from there, though not in large quantities.
Josie himself doesn't know much about wine, but his subordinates who have tasted it, especially Dix, who was born in Kentucky, all say it's of high quality. Now McGinnis is saying the same thing, so it must be pretty good. It might be a nice gift.
