"Those who are closest to the truth have all gone mad."
Volume 1: Chapter 200 Trouble is Coming
Even after the conversation had ended, the Teutonic Elector still hadn't removed his heavy, crisp armor. He sat alone in the empty council hall, illuminated only by a dim chandelier, his brows furrowed, his eyes unfocused, his long, slender fingers tapping incessantly on the thick wooden armrest. The details of his conversation with Roy flashed through his mind, trying to find a possible answer, but the expression on his face grew increasingly conflicted and somber.
"That damn riddle-solving bastard, I'll beat him up every time I see one!"
His lips drooped slightly, and he muttered to himself in great agitation. He hadn't touched Roy, nor could he keep him. Those who possess secrets but lack the ability to protect them are often quickly devoured by this land, but Roy was still alive, so there was absolutely no reason for him to be trapped. However, today's losses were far too heavy, leaving him speechless.
The old mage's loss was completely unexpected. Mental magic was rare even in all of Terra; this forbidden art was strictly controlled by various nations, making widespread circulation impossible. The blatant use of the [Demon Lord] spell had long been universally condemned. Now that his magic was gone, while it didn't necessarily damage his raw power, it was still an unpleasant situation.
Not to mention, he hadn't gotten anything out of Roy at all.
“When fate tells me, I will know. Ha.” The Teutonic Elector thought with a cold snort tinged with obvious disdain. Fate had placed him in a great noble family; few in all of Letania could be more honored than him. He only needed to do his duty and obey fate's arrangements to live out his life as an Elector enjoying wealth and glory. But he had never once thought that way.
What he sought was glory, power, and the true unification of the entire nation of Letania built upon it.
The Mage Kingdom is so powerful that it makes no sense that it would need the diplomatic skills of two women to maintain its "great power status." If it weren't for the internal divisions and power struggles among the Electors, how could Letania have not developed much compared to the era of the Witch King, but instead been declining day by day?
How can Leitania be governed well while surrounded by these insects? In Teuton's heart, he was never proud of his status as the Elector, but proud of his Leitanian identity, and he also wanted to lead Leitania to new heights, to true glory—that is, to be feared by all nations!
Neither Victoria nor Ursus dared to underestimate Letania in the slightest. The fear they felt towards the Letanian madmen during the Witch King's era had transformed into deep awe.
These outrageous ideas, none of them, are relevant to the present-day Letania; any one of them, if leaked, would be seen as a step backward in history. None of them could be considered respect for his destiny as Elector. But he wanted to do it this way, to do it himself! There was no such thing as success not being his to claim; rather, it was a matter of "if not me, then who?"
Therefore, he can accept any ally and treat anyone as an enemy.
There is no truth that I cannot know.
Rising from his seat and descending from the platform, the Grand Elephant walked through the empty corridor and pushed open the doors of the parliament tower. He gave orders to his personal guards:
"Send people to keep an eye on Rhodes Island's offices."
“I’m not just talking about Violet City, but also my own territory and our spies in other Electoral territories. Keep an eye on them. I’d like to see what tricks they have up their sleeves.”
........
Once inside his Rhodes Island office, Roy finally understood why Rhodes Island always referred to itself as a "small medical enterprise."
Rhodes Island's offices in various locations typically only have one or two employees, sufficient to handle minor isolated cases or small-scale outbreaks. They are practically incapable of handling large-scale infection incidents. Roy found it hard to imagine how Miss Nightshade had managed to solve so many problems while she was stationed alone in Violet City the previous night.
For the past two days or so, Roy has seen her practically running around like crazy. This is even with Margaret joining in and helping to share some of the simpler case and rescue work.
Every morning when Roy woke up, he would see Miss Nightbloom's hurried departure. At lunchtime, the only person sitting across from him at the table was Miss Skadi, who knew absolutely nothing about Oripathy treatment. Every afternoon, a steady stream of patients, some injured and others with stones already grown, would crowd downstairs at the office, groaning as they slowly made their way in the queue. Late every night, Roy would see her alone in the living room, a small nightlight on, tallying the day's medication consumption and updating the patients' conditions.
Roy wanted to help, but like Skadi, he was completely clueless about Oripathy treatment and a total novice. In fact, if Rhodes Island were just an ordinary medical company, Kal'tsit's reason for rejecting Roy would seem perfectly reasonable: you can't cure diseases, and we don't need a champion as a security guard.
Moreover, Roy could clearly sense recently that the observation and surveillance targeting him and the Rhodes Island office were becoming more and more frequent.
Without a doubt, it was the Teutonic Elector who orchestrated this. Although Roy successfully fooled him with the [Kal'tsit's Riddle] module, this nobleman, who clearly had something on his mind, certainly wouldn't let him off so easily. Riddles are like that; some people hear "I get it," while others hear "Fuck you." It seems this Elector lacks refinement and falls into the latter category.
At times like these, it's best to avoid the limelight and stay out of the spotlight. Roy didn't want to cause Miss Ye Tan any trouble either.
It was another afternoon, and Roy habitually went to the window to see how many patients were waiting for their appointments. But when he looked out, he was surprised to find the street completely deserted.
"Ok?"
Roy let out a soft, puzzled hum. Sitting at the table, Ye Tan, who had just popped a slice of sausage into her mouth, asked curiously:
"What's wrong? Are there a lot of people today?"
She rarely had the chance to eat at the office. The dignitaries living on Simon Avenue had all moved to the city center or the West End after the explosion, which meant that she had to travel across half the city for each consultation and follow-up visit. Most of the time, she had to bring her lunch with her and never got a hot meal.
Roy shook his head: "No, there's no one here."
"Ding dong."
The doorbell rang suddenly, its sound seeming to contradict Roy's words.
Roy turned his head in surprise, looking towards the door. For some reason, he had a premonition that trouble was coming.
"What's wrong? Aren't you going to open the door?" Margaret blinked and stood up, intending to open the door.
But Roy, standing by the window, spoke first, gesturing for Margaret to continue eating, and then walked towards the door, pressing the doorknob.
"click"
The door opened, revealing a well-dressed blonde woman whose gaze toward Roy held a strange light.
Volume 1: Chapter 201 Empress: I've Become a Spy
The blonde noblewoman before me was dressed elegantly and lavishly. A streamlined white evening gown accentuated her tall, slender figure, paired with a fluffy white feather hat adorned with sparkling diamonds and jewels. Her long, golden hair was as smooth and silky as Skadi's, and even though it appeared to be casually draped over her shoulders, it did not detract from her extraordinary beauty. Her skin was slightly pale, and her bright blue eyes held an indescribable, almost aggressive, gaze, giving her an air of mystery and nobility.
After meeting Roy's gaze, her exquisite face seemed slightly moved, and her left hand, covered by a thin glove, was slightly raised, as if she were a queen from a fairy tale, receiving a subject who was paying homage to her, exuding a captivating majesty and charm.
Roy could confirm that this was a nobleman, and definitely not a fake nobleman from Violet City, but a true nobleman born into a prestigious family in Letania, and from a powerful and influential family.
Because many things can be faked, but temperament cannot be faked; it requires long-term immersion and cultivation in one's environment. If someone rashly impersonates another, strangers might only find it slightly odd, but those who know them well will definitely spot the flaws. Unless you're a shapeshifter—a psychopath capable of precisely mimicking every personality.
The reason why the Sarkaz court is so disliked is precisely this: no one wants to wake up one day to find that their wife, who is sleeping next to them, has suddenly been replaced by another monster, right?
Looking at the blonde woman who had raised her hand and was waiting quietly, Roy took a deep breath, wondering what trouble had come up to this time. Following the etiquette of his past life, he gave a slight bow and a kiss on the hand. Without caring whether he had done it correctly, he straightened up and asked:
"Ma'am, who are you looking for?"
“Mr. Roy, in Letania, when you kiss a lady’s hand for the first time, it’s best not to kiss her directly, as it might be interpreted as a hint.”
The blonde woman in front of him smiled slightly and patiently explained.
Aren't you going to let me in first?
Hearing the door open but seeing no one enter, Miss Ye Tan asked in confusion, "Who's outside, Mr. Roy?"
Roy glanced at her, stepped aside, and said:
"Thank you for your guidance, please come in."
The woman lifted the hem of her evening gown and slowly stepped into the small room. Inside, Miss Ye Tan, who had just been eating, had already brought out the medical testing equipment and piled it on the table, clearly ready to begin work. Facing the first "patient," she adjusted the equipment while looking up and asking:
"Ma'am, where do you feel...no, no, you feel uncomfortable...?"
Ye Tan's voice suddenly stammered, and her expression abruptly turned horrified, as if she had witnessed something unbelievable and was greatly frightened. She plopped down in the chair.
"Your Majesty?"
Roy, who was following closely behind, suddenly stopped and looked blankly at the blonde woman and Nightshade.
Margaret, who was pouring water for the two of them and preparing to listen in, stumbled and almost got scalded by the hot water.
Even Skadi's posture while slumped on the sofa changed slightly. She went from a rather unrefined "Ge You slouch" to a leaning posture, and then, as if sensing the awkward atmosphere, she sat up straight.
"Ah, I've been recognized."
The blonde queen raised her hand, covered her mouth, and chuckled softly.
"I thought my disguise would work. Can you promise me you won't spread the word about me being here? I'm traveling in secret this time."
Traveling in secret? I mean, you didn't even bother with any disguise. Even actors at least wear a veil, but you didn't even wear one. Your clothes, demeanor, and speech all scream that you're a nobleman. Is this what you call traveling in secret?
Roy didn't believe a word the Letanian nobles said. In all his days here, Roy hadn't learned anything except for the art of passing the buck and feigning compliance. Their specialty was using seemingly reasonable but ultimately nonsensical rhetoric to demonstrate their true, bloody motives, leaving you to guess and figure it out. They called this "politeness."
Given that this empress was completely undisguised, and that Ye Tandu could identify her identity at a glance, there is no doubt that her visit this time also had a deeper purpose.
Who was she putting on this for?
........
Violet City, Elector Marquis Manor.
The Teutonic Elector was fond of keeping pets, especially his three tusked beasts, which were of excellent breed, as tall as half a man, and majestic and powerful. He affectionately called them his three generals, and they stayed with him wherever he went.
At that moment, lunch had just ended, and he sat on a bench in the garden, holding a rapier. He cut off a piece from the roasted camel steak that had been prepared beside him, threw it to the three fanged beasts at his feet, and watched as they swarmed forward, fighting and scrambling for the meat. In the blink of an eye, the piece was devoured, and a satisfied smile appeared on his face.
While feeding the pet, he didn't forget to inquire about Roy's recent movements, asking the attendant accompanying him:
"I haven't seen today's surveillance report yet. Is there anything unusual? Tell me about it."
The attendant was an old servant who had followed him since before he inherited the title. He was highly trusted and had the authority to review letters and documents. He then took out a pre-prepared report from his pocket and summarized it as follows:
"As of noon, there are no new developments. Roy remains secluded. Most of the people visiting the Rhodes Island office are residents and the injured who were affected by the Simon Avenue incident. We have identified the identities of two other people in the Rhodes Island office. The owner of the office, Erica (Nightfall), is the daughter of a fallen noble family. Her father was caught up in the Hussite Rebellion in the territory of the Elector of Bohemia. He was falsely accused of being an accomplice and subsequently committed suicide after losing a political struggle. His only daughter, Erica, was then exiled to Violet City."
“This might be something we can use. Send someone to try to contact her while she’s out seeing patients. We might be able to plant a mole within Rhodes Island and see what this organization is really up to.”
The Grand Election Emperor pondered for a moment, then nodded, signaling to continue.
"Another operator, Margaret, whose real name is Margaret Nearl."
"Lin Guang!"
Upon hearing this surname, Teutonic's expression turned serious, his eyes showing a mixture of wariness and awe.
"Is she a descendant of Cyril Nearl?"
"To be precise, it's his granddaughter. She won the Knights' Tournament four years ago, and was subsequently accused of being infected and exiled. Her whereabouts have been unknown recently. But for some reason, in recent months, rumors about her and Roy's love affair have begun circulating in Kazimierz. The source seems to be an article written by the Kazimierz Wine Gazette, supposedly with material provided by members of the Nearl family. This literary work has since become the hottest topic in Kazimierz. However, according to our investigation, there is no evidence to suggest that Margaret and Roy had any contact during their childhood."
"Their first recorded meeting should have been not long ago, during the battle against the Ursus Third Army. Legend has it that Margaret's arrival unleashed Roy's potential, allowing him to perform an unprecedented super spell that destroyed the Ursus war fortress in one fell swoop. But I think there's a lot of exaggeration in that."
The Grand Election Emperor nodded; he thought so too.
If a war fortress were so easily destroyed, it wouldn't be called the most powerful weapon of war. A more likely explanation is that Roy accidentally struck the Ursus ammunition depot, or something happened inside the war fortress itself.
He paused, then asked, "And the other one? Who was that silver-haired girl who stayed outside the building when I summoned Roy that day?"
To everyone's surprise, the attendant shook his head apologetically: "I don't know. We haven't collected any information about her."
The Grand Election Emperor frowned and said, "Continue the investigation. It's impossible for someone to be completely without an identity or trace. We can't let up on the surveillance of Roy's side either. My intuition tells me that we'll have results soon."
If Roy is indeed an agent sent by Xuan Tie to carry out a classified mission involving the "truth," then he would inevitably need to maintain contact with Xuan Tie. Especially after my meeting with him, it's impossible for him not to report the situation to Xuan Tie. Furthermore, the intercity network between Violet City and the Grand Knight Territory is not smooth, and given the Elector's understanding of Xuan Tie, he wouldn't be the type to choose such a constantly monitored channel as the intercity network to transmit confidential information.
