In a more magical way, it's probably because the Kazimirians managed to resurrect the Witch King and send him to the front lines, which is why that great Originium mage was able to pull off such a big feat for them!
But is that even possible? Do you think everyone is a Sarkaz, capable of performing something like a spirit summoning?
"*Ursus profanity*, gunners, shift target, salvo fire, intercept that thing in the air!"
A meteor doesn't travel particularly fast, so if there's enough artillery fire and the fire net is dense enough, it's indeed possible to hit it. At least, that's what the Ursus people think.
But with a loud boom, countless Originium shells were sent into the sky, but when they approached the brilliant meteor, they all exploded and could not get any closer.
The artillery commander stared blankly at the scene before him. This was the first time in his life that he had encountered an enemy that could not be dealt with by firepower.
"Hurry and take cover!"
A roar burst from his mouth, but the next second, the meteor was already approaching.
【Boom! 】
With a deafening roar, the earth trembled, mountains collapsed, and the ground caved in! A violent tremor shook the land, splitting it in two, and a canyon burst forth! With a single arrow, the mighty river instantly transformed into a raging waterfall, and a natural barrier that didn't exist on any map was suddenly formed!
This is it, a shooting star!
Volume 1: Chapter 154 Is the visitor the Pegasus Knight?
On the opposite bank of the Baibo River Grand Canyon, inside the Ursus defense fortifications.
The guards who rushed into Brechester's room dug him out from under a boulder, his body almost completely buried by the rubble. Perhaps because Meteor's target hadn't been locked onto their area, Brechester's office, though reduced to ruins in the aftershocks of the landslide, had at least given him some time to react.
When he was pulled from under the rubble, his body was covered in blood, with not a single patch of unscathed flesh. Miraculously, however, he had not suffered any fatal injuries, much to the amazement of the guards who rescued him.
But soon they noticed that someone seemed to be missing from the office.
"The adjutant was a brave soldier. When the explosion occurred, he resolutely stood in front of me and shielded me from the first wave of impact with his life. That's how I managed to survive."
Brechester's voice was somewhat hoarse as he spoke, causing the rescue soldiers to sigh with regret. They hadn't initially liked this newly arrived adjutant, but upon hearing the words of General Brechester, who held considerable prestige in the army, they couldn't help but feel a pang of guilt and regret. If they had arrived earlier, perhaps their adjutant wouldn't have met such a tragic end.
No one noticed that Brechester, who had miraculously survived, looked at his adjutant's body being carried out of the rubble with an unusually cold, even mocking, gaze.
"Thank you for shielding me from the first wave of landslides with your body."
Brechester said calmly, and the passing soldiers saluted him, taking it as the general genuinely thanking this heroic martyr.
The general's "gratitude" did not last long. Soon, after simply treating his wounds, he returned to the front lines of the army.
A deathly silence fell over the front lines. The surviving soldiers stared blankly, their eyes vacant, seemingly still reeling from what had just transpired. For them, defeat wasn't the worst part. The war between Ursus and Kazimir had been protracted, even the previous emperor's era hadn't seen a complete victory. What did it matter if they lost this battle? They could always try again. What they couldn't accept was that their defeat was caused by a meteor suddenly falling from the sky, utterly routing them. Such a thing, whether in ancient or modern times, within their own country or on this land, was simply too horrifying.
In particular, more than one person noticed that the meteor rose from the forest on the other side of the river, meaning that it was Casimir's doing!
The enemy can conjure meteors with their bare hands, how can we possibly fight them?
The chasm that had formed the White Wave River Waterfall before them served as a constant reminder to the Ursus people that this was not a dream. It was like a heavy hammer blow that slammed down on the heads of the arrogant Third Army, waking them from their illusions of writing history and making their mark on the annals of time, and making them feel the coldness and cruelty of reality.
The soldiers wouldn't launch another charge; they dared not. This was what Brechester, who was on the front lines, was thinking.
Fortunately, this was just the vanguard. The follow-up troops may have seen part of what just happened, but they didn't actually witness that scene. What needs to be done now is to maintain the morale of the follow-up troops.
But how can we maintain the morale of the follow-up troops?
Sending the defeated vanguard back to rest? That's definitely not an option. Once they return to the rear, everything that just happened will immediately spread throughout the Third Army Group. At that point, even if he wanted to hide it, he probably wouldn't be able to.
If we leave them here, these terrified soldiers will never pick up their weapons again. When reinforcements arrive, the rumors will spread throughout the army as they join them.
As for a complete retreat, Brechester never even considered it. This operation was a solo effort by the military; there was no turning back. If they didn't achieve anything, they would surely die if they returned!
So now, there's only one way.
A ruthless glint flashed in Brechester's eyes, but he remained calm as he walked into the camp and deliberately spoke loudly:
"Damn it, what a coincidence that a natural disaster happened at this time?"
"A natural disaster?" The soldier looked up blankly at Brechester, his face full of confusion. "But I clearly saw that the meteor came from... uh!"
With a soft click as the arrow was sheathed, Brechester stared at the fallen corpse before him, his face contorted with disgust.
"Spreading rumors and undermining morale is a capital offense!"
"What just happened was an extremely rare minor natural disaster. What else could it be? That's laughable. Is there anyone on this land who can shoot out meteors, cause mountains to collapse, and crack the earth?"
Brechester questioned him sharply, but perhaps having witnessed the fate of the soldiers who had just contradicted him, or perhaps genuinely believing that Brechester's argument made more sense, none of the soldiers voiced their opposition.
Brechester nodded in satisfaction, his tone stern yet persuasive, and said:
"Alright, natural disasters are beyond our control, but our plans cannot be altered because of them. Now, grab your weapons and charge!"
Charge? Charge in which direction?
The soldiers turned back in bewilderment, looking at the bottomless chasm, only to see Brechester step forward, his hands glowing with magical light. A gust of cold wind blew by, freezing the river that had transformed into a waterfall back into ice. He shouted:
"Armored Warlocks, First Vanguard Team, Second Vanguard Team, follow me!"
The weather in January and February is still quite cold, and three o'clock in the morning is the coldest time of day. Lowering the water to freezing point and turning the frozen river into a bridge is something that would be impossible under normal circumstances, but at this moment, it doesn't take much effort at all.
Even though the river was frozen over, and the ice formed a bridge connecting the two sides of the rift valley, the vast majority of Ursus soldiers were still unwilling to advance.
Although they dared not refute Brechester verbally, they were still afraid of the shooting star.
Even if there's only a one in ten thousand chance that the meteor wasn't a natural disaster, but rather an Originium Arts technique cast by some archmage in the Kazimir army, who can guarantee he won't unleash it again?
Wouldn't they be throwing their lives away if they charged?
But Brechester showed no mercy. He continued forward with his sword, and when the soldiers did not charge, he shouted, "Overseer!"
The Overwatch Corps, a particularly hated special unit within the Ursus army, was dedicated to driving forward auxiliary and surrendered troops as cannon fodder. The Vanguard never imagined that this unit would one day turn its crossbows against their backs.
Despite the threat of death and the general's orders, they finally took off and rushed towards the other side of the canyon.
Brechester watched all of this with indifference; this was his purpose.
He couldn't determine the source of the meteor or who had done it, but everything comes at a price; such a powerful attack couldn't be unleashed continuously.
He drove this demoralized force into a charge, with two objectives—
First, it was to test whether the person who shot the meteor had the strength to release a second meteor. If not, then the charge of this force could force him to use any other possible trump cards. If so, then this force could also be used as expendable resources to exhaust his strength.
Secondly, we should send this defeated army to their deaths.
On the battlefield, the threat of routed troops is often greater than that of the enemy. With just a slight drive, these routed troops could inflict devastating damage on the originally well-ordered main force in the rear. Rather than that, it is better to follow Ursus's long-standing tradition and decisively abandon them! And Brechester has decided to abandon them, but he will make sure their deaths are worthwhile.
His gaze was fixed on the dark forest in the distance. Seeing that the vanguard had begun to cross the ice bridge and approach the other side of the canyon, the forest finally reacted.
Brechester's heart leaped into his throat, but the next second, he was greatly disappointed.
The two figures that emerged from the forest were neither the majestic Silver Spear Pegasus nor the second-generation Witch King with spiraling horns; they were just ordinary people.
One man had blond hair and brown eyes, a sword at his waist, its sharpness concealed yet exuding a dangerous aura. The other man had blue hair and wore black clothes, his hands folded, and was being slowly pushed out in a wheelchair.
Looking at the strange pair, Brechester frowned, as if recognizing something, and suddenly asked:
"Is the visitor the Pegasus Knight?"
His response was a long, confident laugh:
"Exactly!"
Volume 1: Chapter 155 One Man Can Hold the Pass Against Ten Thousand
Roy is currently practically defenseless.
A fatal wound is a fatal wound. This is Terra, and Roy isn't some comedic comic book protagonist who can be finely chopped into mincemeat one minute and then piece himself back together the next. Even with Hai Si's incredibly strong body, less than an hour wouldn't be enough for him to recover.
He's currently in a state where, apart from being in good spirits, he's not doing well in anything else. He's just a bit loud; even standing up or taking a few steps when he's not sick is a problem. Let alone drawing a bow and shooting again.
Even so, despite Marner's repeated requests for Roy to go to the rear to rest immediately, he insisted that Marner find him a wheelchair and forcefully push him out of the front line.
"Is the visitor the Pegasus Knight?"
Brechester's voice was so loud that it drew attention in the quiet battlefield. Even the comrades who were urging their soldiers to charge forward, and the vanguard soldiers who had almost lost their will to fight and were only charging out of fear of death, stopped and turned their gaze to the two lonely figures separated from them by the canyon.
"Exactly!"
Before Marna could speak, Roy preemptively accepted the title.
The title of Pegasus Knight was once reserved for knights who had made great contributions in ancient times or for the noble people of Kuranta. But now in Kazimierz, it is no longer so rare. Any competitive knight with the blood of the gods who performs well on the field will be given the title of Pegasus Knight and widely publicized.
However, coincidentally, neither of the two people present were those Pegasus Knights who were all talk and no action.
Manna is the current head of the Nearl family. Although he has not been well-known in recent years, many of the older generation know of his heroic deeds. In particular, in the eyes of the Ursus people, this guy who once led a group of outlaws who could fight against their regular army was not much weaker than his brother.
Although Roy has only recently risen to prominence, his fame has already spread far and wide. The people of Kazimir regard him as a spiritual idol, wealthy merchants in Victoria have voluntarily established a foundation for him, and even the Ursus Empire, a sworn enemy of Kazimir, has many admirers among its citizens. His Great Wilderness Meteorite, which remains a great mystery in the world of Originium Arts, and his recent activities with the Forest Rangers have also brought him into the sights of the Ursus upper echelons, especially the military.
It didn't really matter which of them responded to that call, but Roy's deliberate act of rushing ahead despite his injuries still made Marna frown.
He was certainly puzzled as to why Roy insisted on pushing him to the front lines, but he also trusted Roy.
"Never mind why, just push me there, it'll have a miraculous effect!"
Having already granted his request, Marna placed her complete trust in this man who had just created a miracle, asking no further questions and leaving the stage to him with peace of mind.
On the other hand, Brechester's expression was uncertain; he really couldn't figure out what Marner and Roy were up to by going into battle alone at this moment.
In fact, if that meteor hadn't just blasted the vanguard's artillery positions into the sky, Brechester would have at least fired a shot at the two men to test their mettle. Unfortunately, they had lost their ranged attack capability, and reinforcements hadn't arrived yet. To think they could kill Roy and his companion on the other side of the canyon by crossbowmen alone, regardless of the distance, was it really as if Marner was a pushover?
Could it be to buy time? But there must be others in the forest. The sorcerer who released that meteor spell has not yet shown himself. They could have continued to hide in the forest instead of acting so fearlessly and rashly. Why is that?
Unable to grasp Roy and his companion's intentions, Brechester could only bite the bullet and say:
"Gentlemen, I see that you two are not fools. One of you is seriously injured, and the other is alone. Do you really think you can stop the Ursus army with your bare hands? If you know what's good for you, surrender now and lay down your arms. One of you is a descendant of the Light, and the other is a renowned Pegasus Knight. Ursus will certainly not treat you unfairly. What do you say?"
To be honest, he was just putting on a show. If Roy and the other man really surrendered, he would have done a great service. If they didn't surrender, it wouldn't be a big deal. After all, when he said this, he also gestured to the guards around him, signaling the supervisory team not to stop and to continue the attack.
