Davidian's Holy Grail War
Page 25
This was already an extremely tempting offer, and King Claudius promised a generous reward. For ordinary soldiers, taking even a portion of Benwick's territory meant they would be knighted.
Even noble knights wouldn't mind if their territory expanded further.
Charles knew this was not a good order; King Claudius, whose composure had been disrupted by this unexpected arrival, had given such an order.
Although the opposing force is small in number, as a commando team, they must all be elites selected from among the best, not to mention they have such extraordinary knights as their spearhead.
But he understood even better the principle that a great reward will surely attract brave men, and now many people were blinded by the prospect of Wick's territory.
He probably couldn't stop these people from going to their deaths, so he could only lead his team to resist Davidian.
He felt that with his martial arts skills, he should be able to hold off David for a short while. And as long as he could stall him, he could then make further judgments based on the situation on the battlefield.
However, he overestimated himself, or rather, underestimated Davidian.
Before the two sides even clashed, he already understood why his soldiers on the front lines were either killed or simply unwilling to approach Davidian—his aura was so strong that even Charles trembled.
Although Charles couldn't see David's face because of the helmet, he could still sense that David's intense killing intent had locked onto him.
He immediately knew that David had identified him through his armor and demeanor, but there was no turning back now that he was here. He had no choice but to fight with all his might.
However, in the first round of their fight, David swung his dark sword and cleaved David and David in two at the waist.
"Holy Sword Envoy..." These were the last words he could utter. He never imagined he would be killed so easily, and he was powerless to resist.
Behind them, King Claudius watched in disbelief as Charles's upper body flew off, while his lower body fell to the ground.
In one round, their general was killed by Davidian.
David killed him just as he had killed the soldiers and knights before him, without any ripples or ups and downs.
Even as the number of commandos around him dwindled, Davidian remained unaffected, continuing to fight and charge with all his might.
"How is this possible!" King Claudius roared in disbelief. Just moments ago, they had the upper hand on the battlefield and seemed to have already seen the final victory.
But the next moment, his trusted general was killed, and his army was routed by Lancelot, who led the entire force. Victory was gone, and he would have to swallow the bitter pill of defeat.
As he watched David close in, the will to live instantly overwhelmed all other thoughts in his mind. He immediately ordered a retreat, leading all his men away from the battlefield.
David did not pursue them further. Although he was confident he could break out of even a trap, the most important thing at the moment was to prioritize the victory of the entire battlefield.
He turned and led the remaining assault team to charge at the knights who were still fighting.
After this final slaughter, all the enemies finally laid down their weapons and expressed their willingness to surrender to Benwick.
Chapter 43 Now
When the battle ended and Lancelot began tallying the casualties, Davidian unceremoniously plopped down on the ground, his transformation automatically deactivated.
At this moment, most of his body was clean. Protected by the Evil Dragon Armor, the blood of the enemies had not splattered on him, so much so that he was now even cleaner than Lancelot, the commander-in-chief.
He wasn't even injured; he could easily dodge or block most of the enemy's attacks.
If there's absolutely no way to dodge it, he can use his armor to take the hit head-on.
In his transformed state, his armor is made of the very rare metal of the Holy Sword blade, making it impossible for ordinary swords to penetrate its defenses.
But fatigue doesn't subside so quickly; he hadn't considered conserving his strength during the battle.
David went up and charged at King Claudius's battle line with all his might, which is why he achieved the most amazing results in the shortest time.
At this moment, he didn't even want to move a finger; he just wanted to rest for a while before going back.
As Lancelot tallied the casualties, he was deeply grateful to David for his contribution to the battle. With just one strike, David had broken through the enemy's center line, inflicting the greatest damage in the battle and laying the foundation for victory on the battlefield.
He had expected Davian to live up to their expectations, but he hadn't anticipated that Davian would be far more outstanding than they had imagined. Even if he himself led the suicide squad, he wouldn't have done a better job than Davian.
When he finally took stock of the battlefield casualties, he was even more astonished. Five thousand enemies were killed, and as many as seven thousand were wounded, plus three thousand who surrendered and were captured without being wounded.
In just one battle, King Claudius's army lost half its strength. If we also consider the deaths of the officers of all ranks among the fifteen thousand men, this battle practically wiped out King Claudius.
Our own losses, two thousand dead and five thousand wounded, were still quite heavy, but it could be considered a great victory.
This battle will likely deter the remaining French princes, and for the time being, no one will dare to mess with Benwick.
“Thank you, you brought us a victory.” Landilus walked over and handed Davidan a water bottle. Davidan took a sip of water and felt better.
"How many of those who attacked with me are still alive?" David only asked this one question; he couldn't care less about anything else for the time being.
"Including me, there are still 275 people left. Don't take it to heart. We were prepared for maybe a dozen or so to survive, or even for the whole army to be wiped out. It's amazing that more than half of them are still alive. That's all thanks to you. And for those who died in battle, His Highness Lancelot will take care of their compensation."
Landilus's words silenced Davidian. A soldier's fate is to go to the battlefield and either die or return alive. The current outcome was something those fallen soldiers had already accepted before even going into battle; it was none of Davidian's business to comment.
Landilus left after this brief exchange. He had other things to do, and he wasn't familiar with Davidian, so there wasn't much for them to say to each other.
Lancelot then approached Davidian. He had done most of his work and now he wanted everyone who had gone through the battle to rest for a while before returning to camp.
"You look very tired. I'm really grateful to you. If it weren't for you, even if I could win this war, the losses would probably be unacceptable to us."
Lancelot didn't look too good either; he was covered in blood, and his cloak was nowhere to be found.
However, his years of training gave him a greater physical advantage than Davidian, since Davidian had not been training for as long.
"It's nothing, it's just what I should do. And as you can see, I'm not injured, am I?"
David still remembers his injury; the battle against the demon boar had been incredibly difficult for him. But if it weren't for that experience, he wouldn't have accepted the power of the Dark Sword.
Then perhaps, there wouldn't be so many problems now.
Lancelot, hearing his words, finally smiled with relief. He sat down next to Davidian and then said:
"Get some rest when you get back. I'll have my father prepare the best victory banquet for you. But after this war, you're planning to return to Britain, aren't you?"
"Well, I've done what I needed to do, and I've seen who I needed to see. The day is drawing near, and I should go back. After all, I will face my future destiny in Britain, not in France."
David took out a cloth and wiped all the blood off the Dark Sword. After all, it was a holy sword, and it was disrespectful to leave it stained with blood.
"Then I won't say anything more. I'll go check how the bodies of the fallen are being handled. If the wounded have also received emergency treatment, then we can return to camp."
After a brief exchange of pleasantries, Lancelot returned to continue checking on the progress of the post-war cleanup. The enemy corpses were irrelevant; they could be burned or buried as they pleased.
However, it's best to transport our own bodies back to Benwick for burial. As for the wounded, those who can still fight should stay, and those who are unable to fight should be properly cared for after their discharge.
Watching Lancelot rush off to do his work again, David felt as if he were seeing his future self. At this moment, he was just a helper, or rather, a mercenary, so he could sit here and rest leisurely.
But in the future, he too will have to shoulder more responsibility and do more things, just like Lancelot does now.
After collecting the bodies of their fallen comrades and handling all related matters, the group set off back to camp.
Tonelli stood at the camp gate, countless people passing by her without her ever turning her head. Until Davidian came into her sight.
And David saw her too, and at that moment he truly felt comforted and relaxed.
So he calmly said to Tonelli, "I'm back, and I will continue to come back."
“Yes, welcome back.” Tonelli walked up to him and gave him a warm hug.
David was stunned for a moment, a strange emotion welling up inside him. After such a great battle, he received such a simple reward, but it touched him the most.
Tonelli's simple hug had a far better effect than she had imagined.
Davidian reached out and hugged her, and the two enjoyed the post-war relaxation. Lancelot glanced at her briefly before looking away.
The passing knights and soldiers also showed him admiration, as they all knew just how bravely David had fought on the battlefield.
While it cannot be said that he single-handedly turned the tide of the entire battle, he certainly made a tremendous contribution.
So they all silently wished David and Tonelli a happy ending.
Chapter 44 Making a choice
News of David's valiant victory spread throughout France that very day.
Everyone thought that Benwick had produced a second Lancelot, and for a moment they were even afraid that Benwick would take advantage of his great victory to invade the surrounding areas.
They were only relieved after receiving intelligence that Lancelot had returned to Benwick City with his men.
However, limited information about Davian subsequently reached the hands of various kings.
They all breathed a sigh of relief after confirming that the man was neither a French knight nor loyal to Benwick.
Lancelot, the Knight of the Lake, is troublesome enough; if another dragon knight, David, joins the fray, they'll truly have sleepless nights.
This resounding victory cemented David's reputation.
Even Britain, on the other side, soon received the news. The knight who roared like a dragon fought valiantly on the battlefield, defeating the enemy and personally killing King Claudius's top general, Charles.
The fact that such a person had not yet received the title of knight made them even more intrigued.
Many kings have considered recruiting him, after all, the current era is chaotic, and having such a powerful knight loyal to them will surely give them an advantage in the future.
However, once they learned that Toneric was by his side and that she was her true identity, many people immediately suppressed all their thoughts.
Because they know this is not something they should get involved in, unless they're completely out of their minds.
Nobody wanted to face Britain's second-best magician at this time; nobody wanted to.
Of course, Davidian was unaware of this.
He was unaware that Toneric's magical abilities were far beyond what she appeared to be, and he was also unaware that the magical enhancements he had received were the most advanced available.
He is currently enjoying a private victory celebration banquet prepared for them by King Ban with Tonelli, featuring dishes that are usually reserved for special occasions.
Unfortunately, even if Davidian ate freely, he couldn't eat much, unlike Lancelot who was eating and drinking heartily next to him...
