Handling Academic Failure
Chapter 3
No other person believes this! However, I do. You really tried your best; just that your best did not sail you through. You worked as hard as you could, but things did not just go as you planned. You attended all the classes required of you, copied all of your notes up to date, read all the notes, did your assignments and submitted them at the required time, prepared for the examination as if it were your last, and was expecting a better result than this. Yet, the expected best never materialize.
Others may not believe you really worked as much as you did, and that you deserve much more than
you got. But I believe you. Sure! I have been there, just like everyone who has made it, and I know it is possible to work hard and still fail. Although some of your classmates failed because they did not put in their best, but your case is different; you tried your best but can not still explain why you failed after all. I understand!
I know it is possible that questions did not come out from the pages you read in the textbook. It was as though the lecturer intentionally left out all the topics you read and capitalized on your weakness, asking all of his questions from the few topics you chose not to read. I know it is possible. I know it is possible; your lecturer demanded from you far much more than he delivered to you, and all you could deliver was the much he delivered, not much not less, and so you were marked down. I know it is possible. I know it is possible that you read too much, far much more than you needed to read, just in a bid to have enough points to please the not-too-easy-to please examiner, and at the end of the day became confused in the examination hall. Others may not understand it is possible, but I do!
DO NOT EXPECT TO BE CELEBRATED
Since most people around you do not believe you deserve more than you got, do not expect them to sympathize with you as much as you desire, or celebrate your failure because you think you tried your best. It may, or rather, it will, in most cases, never happen. No one will cheer you up for failing; not your father or your mother, they have to pay your examination/school fees over again. Not your lecturer, you make him look as though he does not know how to teach. Not your classmates, they expected you to be smarter than you proved to be.
Not your younger ones, you did not set a good example for them to follow; and definitely not your senior ones, they will not understand why you have to fail an exam they passed at a sitting. Not anyone, it is simply your own headache. This is just natural. People do not cheer up those who fail. Only the man who wins gets the accolade. Your parents may become mad at you. They may withhold some privileges from you. Take it in good faith. It would not have been so if you had done better than this. That is their best way of showing their displeasure at you. It will be rather unfair of you to expect that others will rally round you in order to jubilate your failure. They are a bit disappointed in you and they have a right to express their opinion in the best way they feel they can. They have a right to their emotions.

So, do not try to pick quarrel with anyone who does not identify with you when you fail. You will do worse if you were in their shoes. You may even be unlucky enough to have around you people who naturally rejoice at the failure of others. There is nothing you can do about them. You can only be yourself, learn the best from where you are today, and hope for a better result next time to prove to them that you are not a failure.
