"Damn it, Mano, did I come to the wrong place? This isn't a military underground base, is it?"
Rebecca regained her senses.
"Uh, do you have any high-powered pistols, and could you modify my own gun?"
Vito saw a business opportunity and went over to pick up the weapons case.
"Of course, there are two specially modified, high-powered Constitutional Military Freedom guns in the counter. I guarantee they're even more powerful than the ones Arakawa Yoriyuki has. You can tell me your requirements for your gun, and the Mann Squad will give you a discount."
Vito looked at the petite girl who only reached his waist and made a joke.
Children are half price.
Rebecca's face turned red; she was furious.
"I'm not a child! I'm so angry!"
After saying that, Rebecca stormed over to the counter, grabbed a gun, and went to the shooting range to test it. Ten minutes later, Rebecca returned to sit down next to the group and looked at Vito, drawing out her words.
"Vito-chan~ Is it true that children get half price?"
Vito laughed heartily.
"Just kidding, I don't sell guns to kids, but you're my first customer, so I can give you a 50% discount on your purchase today."
"Wuhu~ Thank you, Vito-chan~"
She jumped down next to David and waved her pistol at him: "Hey David, looks like our equipment is sorted out now. I love this place with its pistols!"
Jack took a big gulp of beer and shouted, "I knew it, Vito, this place will definitely be our brothers' gathering place from now on! Come on, cheers to 'Gunslingers'!"
Seeing David's genuine smile, watching Jack and Vito's playful antics, and seeing Rebecca excitedly making phone calls with Mann's team, Gloria smiled with satisfaction.
In this crazy city, such tranquility and happiness may be the truly expensive luxury.
Chapter 36 The Man in the Mirror
When someone catches frogs in a rice paddy, no matter how big the catch, they will inevitably get covered in mud.
Oh, I forgot, Night City no longer has rice paddies or frogs, but it's got plenty of oil pollution.
Life in Night City continued, with David and his team continuing to carry out various miscellaneous tasks.
Every few days, Jack and Vito would receive a job they wanted to do.
Yes, these two guys now have the capital to pick and choose their orders.
Gunslingers are a group of children who make a living by selling guns, but most of their profits come from selling guns. Few of them are able to return to the guns to repair their prosthetic bodies.
Vito told Gloria that if anyone struggling financially came to him to repair their civilian prosthetic body, Gloria could offer a discount depending on the situation, and he wouldn't reduce her wages.
Days passed by like this, and Jack was now a well-known mercenary on the streets. He arrived at Vito's ranch as usual.
Vito lay under the awning at the entrance of the stadium reading a book, with a bucket of ice-cold beer beside him.
"Hey Mano! My mom's nagging again. She says you haven't eaten at her place for days, and she's starting to wonder if her cooking skills have gotten worse."
Vito put down his book, laughed, and tossed a bottle of beer from the ice bucket to Jack.
"Find a seat yourself. Mrs. Wells' cooking is the best in Haywood. I look forward to that every day."
Jack opened the beer bottle with his bare hands and chug it down. He had put a metal shield on his hand so that his fist could break through some ordinary prosthetics.
"Then hurry up and come visit me at my house. My mom's been nagging you. Where's Gloria?"
Vito opened another bottle for Jack.
"They were practicing medicine inside. A poor child had cut his head open, and his mother brought him to see a doctor. When she saw the room full of guns, she thought she had come to the wrong place."
Jack laughed heartily.
"Damn! This whole mess is all because of your name, hahaha!"
Jack noticed Vito's book and asked.
What book are you reading?
Vito picked up the book and shook it.
"Would you like to read Chukpalanick's 'Fight Club'?"
"Talking about combat sports?"
Jack was somewhat puzzled.
Vito shook his head.
"No, it's a work by an author from decades ago that confronted consumerism and nihilism."
Jackla moved over and sat down on a plastic stool.
"That sounds pretty good. I'll get a copy and read it in a few days."
Vito lay down on the recliner again.
"I thought you only read Hemingway's books."
Jack immediately became interested.
"You know him too? Damn, Vito, I think he's even more impressive than those legends of the Morgan Black Hand. I always read 'For Whom the Bell Tolls' before I do anything big."
Vito stretched and then lay back in a comfortable position.
"Yes, he's a real tough guy. His 'The Old Man and the Sea' was one of my first books."
Jack suddenly seemed to remember something and said mysteriously.
"Have you heard? A remarkable figure has emerged in the Night City underworld."
Vito raised his eyelids slightly and asked.
"And which mercenary has been born this time?"
Jack pulled Vito up from the recliner.
"No, buddy, you've been so lazy lately. I think I should find you a companion. Anyway, seriously, that guy is a real tough guy."
After being pulled up by Jack, Vito lazily took a sip of beer to moisten his throat and asked.
"Who is it that our legendary Jack speaks so highly of?"
Jack continued.
"Recently, a strange man has appeared out of nowhere. He wears a weird mask and has killed all those who randomly fire guns, gangsters, and swindlers. I heard that he even killed people from companies. Now everyone in the underworld calls him Square Head!"
He basically leaves no survivors where he goes, but he was recorded by a guy who makes "Black Dream" sunglasses. He beat those perverts to pieces and gave them a taste of their own medicine, melting the street cleaner. Now, these "Black Dream" sunglasses are said to be selling like hotcakes, practically impossible to find!
Vito shrugs his shoulders.
"Sounds like a cyber lunatic."
Jack retorted.
“Many people say that, but I think he did a good job killing them. There are always so many scoundrels to kill, and they need ruthless characters like him to teach them a lesson!”
Vito remained noncommittal.
Jack continued.
"After the Square Head became famous, many people said they had seen him and that he didn't kill anyone or draw a gun. He just came out for a walk and only killed those bastards."
“Some of the bolder ones went to the places where the blockhead killed people, and it was absolutely horrific. But he also released all the innocent people who had been captured by the cleaners and gangs unharmed, so some people called him the Punisher.”
Vito couldn't help but laugh out loud.
"The Punisher? That sounds like an outdated anime character. Even a blockhead would sound better."
Jack gestured for Vito to be serious, and then continued to tell Vito about the cube head.
"Right now, everyone in the Night City is looking for Square Head, especially the group of guys that Arasaka keeps. According to the old captain's inside information, Square Head executed several of Arasaka's corporate dogs. Now, those guys in suits see everyone as a killer."
Vito pondered, realizing that he had been killing people at night a bit too often lately.
At this moment, Gloria's patient came out, and at the door, the child's mother kept thanking Gloria.
"Thank you, doctor, thank you for the discount. To be honest, I was counting on this money to pay for the washing machine."
After seeing the patient off, Gloria greeted Jack.
She ushered Jack into the gym, and then... (The sentence is incomplete and lacks context).
Looking at Gloria, Jack sighed.
“We rough men just aren’t as attentive as women. Sometimes I wonder what it will be like after I get married.”
"You've never brought Misty home?"
Vito asked, puzzled.
“Hey, we’re not there yet. Although we’ve known each other since we were little, my mom doesn’t really like Misty, so it’s been dragging on.”
Jack said helplessly.
"That can't be, how could Mrs. Wells not like Misty?"
Vito is a bit of a gossip these days.
“I have an ex-girlfriend named Camilla. We were on good terms back then, and my mom decided that she was going to be my daughter-in-law. Now, my mom finds fault with everything about Missy, and it's driving me crazy.”
Jack sighed.
Vito patted Jack on the shoulder.
"Don't worry, I'll talk to Mrs. Wells sometime. Misty is a good girl, and I have to help you out, both morally and practically."
Jack patted Vito on the shoulder.
"Thanks, Mano, but let's not talk about that. I think you should find a partner to settle down with. We're not short of money now, and we don't have to run around all day. I've noticed that you've been talking less and less while doing tasks lately, like a machine."
"Huh? Really? I didn't notice."
Vito laughed it off.
Chapter 37 Lost Lambs
To be honest, Vito is now unsure whether he is a machine or not; his human nature has become somewhat blurred.
But just as he was lost in thought, Gloria spoke to Jack.
“I would agree with Vito finding a companion or going out to relax. Vito has looked very tired lately.”
Vito refused to admit it and retorted.
"I'm fine. Not many people come to the shop at night, so I can always sneak in some laziness."
Jack suddenly thought of something and said.
"Speaking of which, I almost forgot about this. Old Wei found you a batch of goods that you can use in your shop. He went to great lengths to get them through connections."
Vito was puzzled.
"What kind of goods require such a high maintenance fee?"
Jack said mysteriously.
“These are all direct from the company. Old Wei said you need to have some good stuff to attract those who are picky about prosthetics and open up a path for them.”
Vito smiled.
"We really have to thank Lao Wei. It's been a while since I've seen him, and I miss him quite a bit."
Jack sent Vito a file.
"The Devil Boxing Club is organizing a small tournament. The champion can have a super championship match with the champions from each region. Old Wei has already arrived. How about we go check it out?"
Vito's eyes lit up as he carefully examined the file.
