The ear-piercing roar of engines exploded instantly, and seven or eight modified sports cars shot off like arrows. The tires screeched against the ground, emitting a pungent, burnt smell, and long plumes of exhaust fumes trailed from their rear ends.
Li Ying's fingers flew across the gear shift lever, and she floored the accelerator. The Type 66 Dangerous Driving instantly surged to the front, the engine revving up and the force of the acceleration slamming the two of them into their seats.
The street race track in Night City is rugged and dangerous. The old town's roads are full of potholes, and there are messy neon billboards and abandoned containers on both sides. The race route has one curve after another, and a slight carelessness can lead to a fatal accident.
A black SUV equipped with anti-collision steel beams was right behind them, its driver clearly a tough character. Taking advantage of the car's heavy body, it rammed hard into Li Ying's car!
boom!
The violent impact caused the car to veer sharply, the wheels to slip instantly, and the car swung toward a container on the side of the road. Vito, in the passenger seat, frowned slightly but made no move; he chose to trust Li Ying's driving skills.
Li Ying remained calm, her eyes fixed on the road ahead. She quickly and lightly turned the steering wheel with both hands, simultaneously applying the brakes and precisely controlling the accelerator with her toes. The entire sequence of actions was fluid and without the slightest sign of panic.
Just as the vehicle was about to collide with the container, the slipping wheels instantly straightened, and she forcefully pulled the out-of-control vehicle back onto the track. The dramatic rescue was completed in one smooth motion, without even a scratch.
Vito looked at Li Ying, the girl in front of him, whose appearance on the field was extremely dazzling.
Just then, the car radio suddenly switched frequencies, and a passionate and exciting melody burst out—"Tokyo Drift" started precisely, its notes hitting the roar of the engine and completely igniting the frenzied atmosphere on the track.
After dodging the impact, Li Ying's eyes were fixed on the series of S-shaped curves ahead, and a faint smile appeared on her lips.
She abruptly released the accelerator, pulled the handbrake, turned the steering wheel, and spun back. The whole sequence of actions was so fast that it was just a blur. The Type 66 sports car instantly skidded, its body hugging the inner wall of the curve to complete a perfect drift. Sparks flew as the tires rubbed against the ground, both stylish and wild.
In the instant of drifting through the corner, the car left all its rivals behind and instantly surged to the top of the track.
Seeing that crashing and maneuvering had failed to move them, the driver had the thug in the passenger seat lean out and start firing wildly at them with a submachine gun.
Ping ping ping ping!
The bullets whistled through the night sky and struck the armored body of the Type 66 Dangerous vehicle, sending sparks flying. The windows rattled, and bullet holes left white marks on the vehicle's body.
Ke Liying didn't even glance away, her eyes still fixed on the winding track ahead. Her hands were firmly on the steering wheel, and her actions of shifting gears, accelerating, and controlling the car were completely smooth, as if the gunshots around her were just background noise in the race.
Vito was completely nonchalant, even raising his hand to lightly tap his knee in time with the radio's rhythm; such a trivial matter was not worthy of disturbing the match.
The other drivers were furious and tried to collide with and cut off other cars one after another, but Li Ying resolved them all with her precise driving skills. Her control over the car was superb. Every lane change and every acceleration was just right, and she brought out the best in dangerous driving.
Without any cybernetic enhancements, weapons intervention, or any trickery, Li Ying relied solely on her superb driving skills to lead the race to the very end.
The moment they crossed the finish line, deafening cheers erupted from both sides of the track. The roar of engines and the shouts of the crowd intertwined, becoming the wildest background sound in Night City.
The two were completely absorbed in the melody of the radio and the thrill of racing, ignoring all attacks and focusing solely on enjoying the pure pleasure of driving.
The provocations from the other drivers, the roar of guns, and the dangers of the track all served as a backdrop to Li Ying's driving skills.
The dangerous driving came to a slow stop. Li Ying released the steering wheel, her fingertips slightly flushed, and a look of fierceness appeared on her face, making her appear more assertive than usual.
“You drove wonderfully, Miss Liying.”
“It’s because the dangerous driving was so excellent, Mr. Vito.”
Ignoring the host's enthusiastic announcement of the winner, the two drove home without stopping.
"Gloria has finished moving? I offered to help Jack, but she refused, saying she didn't have much stuff."
"The move is done. David has taken on a lot of work lately and rented a new apartment for Gloria. Originally, she was supposed to rent one in the company square, but Gloria said she wasn't used to such a big house, so she moved to Heywood by herself."
Liying turned the radio volume down.
“I saw David in the afterlife a while ago. He’s very strong now and has a lot of prosthetics.”
Vito gestured with his hand.
"Gloria said that David is trying to save money, and Lucy stopped being a team hacker because of what happened to Mann and the others. It seems that the deaths of Mann and Dorio have had a big impact on her."
Liying and Vito were talking.
“I met them not long after I arrived in Night City. David has changed so much in just over half a year. I need to get Gloria a few prosthetic capacity chips when I have time. If something happens to all those prosthetics, Gloria will be heartbroken.”
"Prosthetic volume chip? Is that the one you're working on today?"
Li Ying asked.
"Today I'm not just working on a prosthetic volume chip; I want to install it on a behavioral chip to see if I can reduce the side effects of the behavioral chip. I did some work on it today, but I haven't tested it yet."
Vito's explanation.
"Behavioral chips?"
Liying didn't quite understand these things.
"It can give an ordinary person the power of a trained soldier or even an elite soldier."
Vito explained earnestly.
"Ordinary people, gaining power?"
Liying was puzzled.
"This chip can empower ordinary people to fight against injustice, at least allowing them to take down a few murderers before they are caught and locked up in a glass enclosure."
Chapter 106 The Restless Self
Night City is a strange place. Some people stay there their whole lives and remain the same, while others transform in a very short time.
Vincent became a regular at the Wild Wolves, and he is now the Wild Wolves' most sought-after lone wolf driver. Birds of a feather flock together.
Vincent and Jack became good friends. Once, Vincent mentioned that Vito had invited him to be the fifth in command, and Jack laughed out loud.
“V, Vito’s up to his old tricks again. There are only four members in our team, so you’re basically the fifth in command, aren’t you?”
"Damn, Jack, so that's how it is! But why haven't I seen Vito lately, and I haven't seen you guys do anything either?"
Vincent picked up a slice of lemon and put it into the agave.
"Hey! Vito's been busy with inventions lately. I've visited him a few times, and each time I've seen him tucked away in a pile of robotic arms modifying things."
He said the wolf was now doing middleman business, and told me to focus on this side for now.
Jack's face lit up as soon as he mentioned Vito.
“Jack, what kind of person is Vito? I always hear the Wolf mercenaries mention him, and I’m really curious. I was quite startled by him last time.”
Vincent asked curiously.
"Vito is a really great guy. Everyone who's friends says so. He's fearless, bold yet careful. He'll definitely be a legend in Night City in the future!"
People say that to understand the hardships of the streets, you have to live there. I can tell Vito wasn't the kind of person who grew up on the streets, but he understands it all. Compared to other selfish guys, he's practically a saint.
"So how did you two meet?"
“We met at Wild Wolf, but it’s strange, I always felt like Vito had known me for a long time.”
“I have that feeling too, like he knows about my past.”
The two were chatting at the Wild Wolf bar when Peppy came over.
“I’ve got a job, V. Someone wants to ship something discreetly.”
Vincent was somewhat disheartened.
“Hey Pepi, don’t just dump all sorts of odd jobs on me. I don’t have much time, and I don’t really want to take on these little jobs that come with a bottle of wine.”
Peppy poured Vincent a glass and then said in a low voice.
“This is no small job, V. This guy not only wants a good driver, but also requires the driver to be skilled. Anyone who dares to make such a request at Wild Wolves is no pushover.”
"Alright, Peggy, I'll trust you this once."
……
Not many people can leave the corporate world alive, and even fewer can maintain their conscience intact.
Valerie had experienced it all; she was flexible and adaptable, profiting from other people's secrets. Intelligence was Valerie's weapon.
There is no such thing as fair competition; it's all about the winner taking all.
Valerie was not about to let the security guys put a rope around her neck and tighten it.
After returning to Arasaka, she walked quickly toward Jenkins' office.
"That guy is a freak, and he keeps talking nonsense. We didn't get the information we wanted!"
Jenkins paced back and forth in his office; the fight had come suddenly and brutally.
"Abernathy's pressing hard! That crazy woman's like she's caught a whiff of blood!"
Valerie stood there, lost in thought.
Jenkins suddenly stopped in his tracks.
"There are some problems in Frankfurt too. Send a trustworthy person to continental Europe to deal with Abernathy."
Valerie frowned.
"Should I handle it?"
Jenkins pulled out a chip and handed it to Valerie. After Valerie inserted it into her brain, all of Susan Abernathy's information immediately appeared.
Including her husband and lover, Abernathy's relationships were not simple; her husband and lover both held positions of power in other companies.
"So, you want me to kill her?"
Jenkins didn't say anything; he walked over to the sofa and sat down.
"Go ahead and do it, Arasaka will support you!"
Jenkins did not give a direct answer; those in his position know best how to prepare for severing ties with their subordinates.
Valerie shook her head.
"Dealing with Abernathy is useless. It's the security department that wants to target us. Abernathy is just a flag that's been raised."
Jenkins' eyes flashed. He knew, of course, that these people were acting so aggressively at Rintaro's behest, but he didn't have the courage to confront Rintaro. He didn't like playing any games of insubordination.
To counter Rintaro, one must start by targeting the company; otherwise, one could be mistaken for a spy and eliminated.
He deliberately darkened his expression, feigning displeasure with Valerie.
"V, do you have any objections?"
Valerie ignored Jenkins's disgruntled tone; now was not the time to accept workplace manipulation.
"The security department said they found Kim Yeon and retrieved the company secrets, but our people went to the scene and there was a group of Santo Domingo thugs lying there."
The traces at the scene were very messy, but the security department wouldn't let us examine them, which means things weren't as the security department described.
We can fabricate stories about other companies obtaining classified information to counter the Security Department, buying us time to locate their newly established intelligence sub-network.
Jenkins looked grave. He assessed that this method was extremely risky, but it was also a way to break the deadlock.
"The leak of company secrets will make our situation even worse. I don't even have the right to know this secret. If we're not careful, we'll be eliminated by the company!"
Valerie hadn't anticipated that this company secret would be so important, so she quietly put away the chip and prepared for the worst.
"However, it's better for both sides to lose than for the security department to have the last laugh. Your suggestion is good, V. Go and arrange for the people to go to Europe first. We'll talk about Abernathy later."
Valerie walked out of Jenkins' office and ran into Anne.
"How is the situation?"
Valerie led Anne to her office.
"The situation is bad. Jenkins is getting impatient. There are problems in Europe too, and someone needs to go there."
Valerie looked at Anne.
"The work over there won't be easy, but it'll be a good way to get away from this mess. Why don't you go?"
Anne nodded; she had always trusted Valerie.
Valerie asked Anne to prepare, while she herself began preparing materials for the situation in Europe on the computer.
Suddenly, she saw an advertisement.
Crystal Palace: Leaving Everything Far Behind
She downloaded the ad to her external hard drive.
"Leave everything far behind?"
Valerie doesn't want to give up everything for now, but who can say for sure what will happen in the future?
