"Damn, this kid is completely drunk, what do we do?"
"Give him a beating first, tie him up and take him back, then make him transfer the money obediently tomorrow."
"it is good!"
Bang, bang!
Seeing the two Valentino gang members lying on the ground, Vito fired a few more shots at each of them.
"If you have guns but don't use martial arts, when will you ever become a grandmaster? Here's the euro for you, how about it?"
The car Vito had called arrived.
"We meet again, Vito. Thank you for choosing Delaman. Choosing Delaman means leaving your troubles at the door."
Chapter 15 Unredeemed
If we're talking about any major changes in Shinmi, the streets of Night City definitely deserve a mention.
The two bodies were collected in less than an hour, emptied in less than a day, and canned and put on the shelves in less than a week.
This is the efficiency of Night City, which is incomparable to any remote city. Leaving perfectly good meat on the street to rot is, in Huang Silang's words, giving away all the good white meat to maggots. What a waste!
Oh, by the way, this chapter is sponsored by Whole Foods Canned Foods. Whole Foods canned food is made from real meat that's dripping with blood. It's a famous brand in Night City!
When Vito got home, he found David still awake, sitting on the sofa in a daze.
"What? Don't the kids in Night City get to sleep?"
David retorted, "I'm not a child anymore, Vito!"
"Alright, alright, Lord Night City doesn't need to sleep?"
David remained silent; he didn't want to respond to Vito.
Vito lit a cigarette and used a small cocoa can as an ashtray.
Cough cough cough cough!
David coughed again upon smelling the smoke.
Vito looked at David, then at the cigarette in his hand, then stubbed it out and asked.
Is there a problem with your prosthetic lung?
David replied, "I don't have a lung prosthesis, it's okay, Vito, you can smoke, I'll just open the window."
Vito lit his cigarette again, took a deep drag and slowly exhaled, then leaned back on the sofa.
"Ah, having one of these after a drink is so refreshing, David. How do you tolerate the stench of Night City without a lung prosthesis?"
David opened a small can of Coke for Vito and said.
“I grew up in Night City, so I’m used to it.”
Vito shook his head and said.
"Remember to exchange it for a new one when you make money. Night City won't give you any meager gifts. Your lungs might already be having problems."
David nodded and asked.
"Vito, do you think I can take Mom away from Night City?"
Vito flicked his cigarette ash: "Of course you can. You have the ability now, and you'll definitely be able to do it after a few years of growth."
"But I..."
"Stop doubting yourself. I asked the friends I met tonight. Arasaka Academy is the top school in Night City. Your grades are also good. Although you dropped out, you still have the ability to go up to the top of Arasaka Tower one day."
“Mom said that too, but…”
"Don't be impatient, David, let me finish. But one day you'll find that companies are all ruthless and heartless."
Once you enter Arasaka, you'll find that everyone around you was once considered the most talented person by others. Further up, you'll find that those sitting in the office with you are all so-called geniuses. At that point, climbing further won't rely on talent anymore.
"Then, what will it take?"
"By using ruthless methods, you become a corporate dog wagging your tail at the Arasaka family, baring your teeth at others, and chewing on their bones. Then you'll find that it's easier to take over the Arasaka Tower than to do all this lousy stuff."
"..."
David couldn't help but wonder if he would become mentally ill if he lived that kind of life.
"The company created countless slums, and then recruited children from the slums to train them as taxi drivers. The children who went in did not hate the company; they just felt like they had won the lottery."
Look around you. David, the corporation, and the powerful are trying to build a new feudal society with money, drastically reversing the course of history. I think some people would love to turn Night City into a slave society, making the lower classes their livestock.
“Johnny Silverhand is an idiot who detonates a nuclear bomb in the city center, but he did all the things he babbled about all day. He rebelled against the company. So, David, when you don’t have the ability, you can look at things closer and smaller, but when you’re different one day, you have to think about the city. With great power comes great responsibility.”
David was stunned. Vito had become as aggressive as Johnny Silverhand from the legends, which made him a little uncomfortable. Just as he was about to ask more questions, Vito had already fallen asleep on the sofa.
David smiled helplessly.
"Alright, let's talk about it tomorrow. I haven't said a single word about what I need to say yet."
The next day, David was awakened by a phone call from the principal of Arasaka Academy. He knew it was about him hitting Katsuo. He waved to end the call and drifted back to sleep.
After sleeping for another hour or so, David was woken up by the phone again. This time it was Mann calling, and David immediately sat up and answered the phone.
"Hey, Mann, time to get to work?"
"Yes, David, I've sent you the address. Come here first and meet the other team members. I'll talk to you about the mission after you've met them."
"Okay, I'll be right there."
David got dressed, put on his mother's jacket, and went out of the room to find Vito eating pizza.
"Want one?"
"No, I thought you would get up later. You drank a lot last night."
Vito rubbed his head.
"Yes, I'm still feeling unwell."
"There's something..."
"There's something..."
The two spoke in unison, and Vito humbly stepped aside.
"I'm not in a hurry, you go first."
"Regarding what you said last night, Vito, could you tell me the part you didn't finish?"
Vito recalled for a moment and said.
"Oh, that's just the 'Listen to me first' part that drunk men love to use. Just listen to it and don't think too much about it."
"I'd like to hear the rest."
"Let's talk about it next time I get that drunk."
“Okay, Vito, what do you want to say?”
"Your mother knows that you didn't go to college."
"what!!"
Vito took a sip of his cola and said, "Gloria called me this morning to ask if you were home. Apparently, your principal called her to say he wanted to give you a scholarship, and that your fight with your classmate was forgiven. Now you need to go back to the academy for classes."
"But why didn't Mom call me?"
"After I answered the phone, I told her that when a sweet cake falls from the sky, you should check if there are any fishhooks behind it."
Your good grades didn't happen overnight. They demanded full compensation from you for messing up the system, and now you've gotten lucky by beating up a classmate from a wealthy family? What kind of good fortune is this?
"What did Mom say?"
"She thought about it and also felt something was off. We analyzed it and concluded that it might be related to the S.A.W.S. prosthetic body, so we all agreed that you don't need to go back to class."
David smiled happily.
"That's great, thank you, Vito."
"No need to thank me. Be careful. I've heard about Mann from Gloria too. He's not a bad person. You can definitely gain some experience in their team. Gloria can go home in a week. You can pick her up then. I'm looking for a place to live and some work these next few days. The cost of living in Night City is really damn high."
“You don’t need to look for a house, Vito, you just…”
"It's fine for me to stay here for a while. I'll be coming into contact with a lot of people with ulterior motives in the future, so it won't be very convenient for me to stay at your place again."
Chapter 16 See you again
“Hey, Vito, you have no idea what kind of job I got. The priest gave me a job, and he even asked me about you. He wants you to come with me to finish this job so we can meet him.”
As soon as Vito answered Jack's call, he heard Jack excitedly shouting.
"Okay, Jack, I got it. How come you're perfectly fine after drinking so much last night?"
Jack laughed and said, "To be honest, my head feels like it's been hit by a nuclear bomb today, but once I got the job, the pain disappeared. Vito, this is the first step to becoming a legend. Come on, Wild Wolf, let's meet up first."
After agreeing to Jack's request, Vito took a double-barrel sprayer from David's room, put it in a long gift box, and then set off for the wolves.
After the two met, Jack couldn't wait to explain the mission.
"This time, the priest asked us to help a basketball star named LeBron find his car. It's said that a few street thieves stole it and then went to participate in a stunt race."
Vito handed the box to Jack.
"How much did you pay for this gift?"
Jack took the gift box and began to speak as he unwrapped it.
"Money? Dude, we're here to make a name for ourselves, not for the money. Once we become legends, the money will come rolling in. Holy crap, how come this shotgun barrel is so big?"
"My modified toy works best with slugs. Alright, Legend, let's get to work. I'm not really interested in cheap commissions, but you're right, we have to start somewhere."
"Everything is difficult at the beginning, right? Let's go, I borrowed a car for transportation, let's get things moving!"
The two drove a Hera EC-V 1660 Touring Car to the coordinates of the Lijing District. They soon spotted their target vehicle, where several trendy-looking guys were chatting and chatting at the alley entrance.
“Jack, drive over there and park next to them.”
As soon as the car stopped, the high-spirited motorcyclists started cursing.
"You stupid idiot, can't you see there's anyone here?"
Vito opened the car door, got out, and walked over to them.
"Don't rush to spew nonsense, is this your car?"
A guy who looked like the leader of the gang sat on the hood and yelled.
"This is my car, don't you dare look at it, or I'll gouge your eyes out."
Jack then got out of the car, holding the DB-2 pistol that Vito had given him. This large-caliber shotgun, after Vito's modifications, looked almost like a hand cannon.
“Kid, Mr. Wells is warning you not to talk nonsense. This is a falcon, and you guys can’t afford it.”
The leader swallowed hard as he looked at the cannon-like gun in Jack's hand.
"Who, who said I can't afford it? This is my car!"
Vito swept the car with the crosshair and then walked up to the leader of the thugs.
"This is LeBang's car. Tell me, how did you get it?"
The leader gritted his teeth and said.
"This is the car that the big black guy lost to us in the race. The race was fair, just and open. You can ask him if you don't believe me. Damn, I knew that guy was a sore loser. Now he's getting someone to take the car back."
The thugs on the motorcycle nearby also chimed in.
"Yes, we agreed before the competition that you shouldn't try to scare us with guns. If you're so tough, go ahead and rob the company!"
Jack listened to these people's detailed and seemingly plausible explanations, and suddenly he was at a loss. He looked at Vito.
