Chapter 30 Heading to Tibet
After staying in Kyoto for a few days, Zhao Sheng bid farewell to Elder Ye, Elder Yan, and others, and left Kyoto for Tibet Province. He did not take any means of transportation and chose to walk to Tibet Province.
Instead of taking the main road, Zhao Sheng left Beijing and headed directly north into Inner Mongolia. Traveling across the vast grasslands, he didn't make contact with anyone and headed southwest, intending to cross Gansu and Qinghai provinces from Inner Mongolia into Tibet.
Zhao Sheng's choice to walk into Tibet was not without reason. His martial arts skills were now perfected and he had a murderous intent. His nature had also developed a bloodthirsty nature from killing too many people.
He needs time to cleanse and quiet his mind, to refine his martial arts skills, and to use this time to subdue his restless mind.
He progressed from Ming Jin to Hua Jin in too short a time, which led to mental instability and susceptibility to various external disturbances.
Along his journey, Zhao Sheng observed all things, purified his mind through slaughter, watched thousands of horses gallop, observed two beasts fighting for food, and even comprehended the laws of heaven and earth.
He walked along country lanes, rarely encountering anyone, and when he did, they wouldn't approach him to talk. Gradually, he became irritable and stopped, continuing on his way.
One day... five days... ten days, time slowly passed.
Sun rises and moon sets, sunset and moon rises!
By eating wild game and drinking spring water, Zhao Sheng eliminated his restlessness, calmed his restless mind, and controlled his wandering thoughts. He abandoned all distracting ideas, and his murderous nature gradually faded, while his murderous aura became more subdued.
His body grew thinner and thinner, but his spirits became more and more vigorous.
When he entered Tibet, his clothes were tattered, his shoes were worn down, and he walked almost barefoot for the last few days. His skin and bones looked like steel bars inverted on his skeleton.
Zhao Sheng glanced down at his clothes and shoes, tore off his clothes, threw away his shoes, and strode forward, his long hair hanging down his back and shoulders, dancing in the cool breeze.
He soon encountered a young girl herding cattle and singing Tibetan folk songs. He went up to her and asked her for the nearest city. After receiving her answer, he took out a string of tiger teeth necklaces and gave them to her.
These are some little gadgets he made out of boredom after killing a tiger in the mountains half a month ago.
The girl was overjoyed; this was the first time she had met someone who gave her a gift.
Zhao Sheng left, hurrying towards Hada City, ignoring the happy girl. When she came to her senses and wanted to thank him, she saw that he had already left. Her eyes showed a slight disappointment, and she continued to herd cattle.
for a long time.
When Zhao Sheng entered Hada City, it was almost noon. He was shirtless, revealing his muscular body, and barefoot, looking like a savage who had entered a modern city.
People around him stood at a distance watching him, their eyes filled with curiosity.
Zhao Sheng left quickly, first going to a clothing store to buy a set of Tibetan clothes that fit him, then going to a barbershop to cut his long hair, and finally staying at a small hotel nearby that didn't require an ID card.
It gets dark earlier in Tibet than in other places, so even at six or seven o'clock now, you can hardly see the sun.
After practicing his boxing routine, which also served as a workout for his muscles, bones, skin, and internal organs, Zhao Sheng lay down on the bed and fell into a deep sleep.
The next morning.
After practicing his boxing and having breakfast, Zhao Sheng left Hada City and continued his journey towards the interior of Tibet Province, where Tibetan Buddhism was practiced, which was his true destination.
This differs from the Indian Buddhist concept of suffering in this life and enjoying blessings in the next.
The core of Tibetan Buddhism is compassion and Bodhicitta, as well as karma, retribution, and reincarnation.
Zhao Sheng's bloodlust also falls under the category of the seven emotions and six desires. Only by cultivating self-discipline can he suppress his bloodlust. Of course, he can also choose to kill to protect the righteous path.
Zhao Sheng arrived in the heart of Tibet in just half a day. Looking up, he saw a small temple standing not far ahead. He quickly walked to the front of the temple.
The temple is very small, with only one Buddha statue inside. An old man sits on the pedestal of the Buddha statue, wearing the traditional robes of Tibetan Buddhism. He is the lama of this small temple, and a child sits next to him.
Lama is an honorific title for monks in Tibetan Buddhism, and also refers to monks in small temples who are responsible for guiding spiritual practice and managing the temple.
The old lama stood up, went into the temple to fetch a bowl of water, and handed it to Zhao Sheng. "Have a drink of water, and then accompany this humble monk into the temple."
"I would like to study Buddhist teachings here. I wonder if the lama would be willing?" Zhao Sheng asked the elderly lama after drinking some water.
"If you don't mind, I'm willing to guide you in your practice. However, the temple is a bit small, so you may have to build your own accommodations," the old lama said.
"Yes, I'll take care of my own food and lodging." Zhao Sheng nodded and followed the old lama into the small temple. A little boy next to him glanced at him curiously, and the old lama gently tapped him on the head.
The boy cried out in pain, closed his eyes, and continued his cultivation.
"Be mindful in your practice, and don't look around, lest you disturb your concentration." The old lama earnestly instructed the child, who was mischievous and innocent, a time of lively activity.
But the more you do this, the more likely you are to be able to go to the great Buddhist community and become a disciple, or even a high monk like a Khenpo.
A Khenpo is the abbot or head of a large monastery, responsible for the management, teaching, and guidance of monks in their practice. He must possess profound Buddhist knowledge and spiritual attainments, and be able to guide monks in their practice and study of the Dharma.
Zhao Sheng sat upright on a prayer mat, as did the elderly lama. The two faced each other. "Benefactor, have you studied the Buddhist scriptures?"
"I have never studied any Buddhist scriptures," Zhao Sheng said, shaking his head slightly.
Upon hearing this, the elderly lama continued, "Since you are a beginner, I will teach you the Tripitaka. The Tripitaka is the most classic and fundamental Buddhist scripture, most suitable for beginners."
"The entire Tripitaka contains more than 260 characters, and its origin dates back to the Tang Dynasty. It was carved in Yushu, Qinghai, when Princess Wencheng went to Tibet. That was the earliest version, which has long been lost."
"The Tripitaka we are studying now is a classic text with annotations and practical guidance from eminent monks throughout the ages, and it has become a common practice for all schools."
"The Buddhist canon is divided into two main parts: the Kangyur and the Tanjur. The Kangyur has three sections: the Vinaya section, the Sutra section, and the Tantric section, covering a wide range of topics related to spiritual practice and also including many Buddhist scriptures..."
"The Tanjur contains treatises, tantras, and miscellaneous texts, covering a wide range of topics, including Buddhist esoteric scriptures, various agricultural and medical texts, history, biographies, astronomy, and calendrical calculations..."
Zhao Sheng listened silently as the old lama explained the contents of the Tripitaka. He memorized the contents and studied the Tripitaka in his mind as he listened.
Buddhist scriptures contain profound insights into spiritual practice. Even a brief reading of the texts brings a sense of peace and tranquility, which is likely due to the inclusion of meditation teachings.
The old lama spoke until evening. It was supposed to end in the afternoon, but he explained it in detail again, probably because he was afraid that Zhao Sheng would not understand.
"Benefactor, if there is anything you don't understand, you can ask this humble monk at any time. This humble monk will help you answer some questions." After saying this, the old lama stood up, straightened his monk's robe, and then walked out of the temple.
Zhao Sheng continued to sit upright on the futon, studying the Tripitaka. He slightly adjusted his position to face the Buddha statue. The two of them, one big and one small, sat quietly studying the Tripitaka with peaceful expressions.
