Chapter 7 Batman's Little Tricks
"You even attached tracking devices to that shipment??"
Overjoyed, Gordon stared intently at Lucius in the office. This newcomer, who had only been with the police station for a short time, had given him so many surprises!
Originally, we only hoped that he could use his relatively safe identity in Gotham to monitor the core routes, but we never expected that he would not only quell the chaos, but also complete the initial mission so perfectly!
"you..."
"Knock knock knock".
Gordon was about to ask further questions when the room was filled with several knocks on the door.
"Sheriff Gordon, I've come to report on the situation."
A tall police officer entered after speaking, picked up a report, and began reading it aloud to himself.
Although the newcomer was dressed in a police uniform, his muscular face and burly physique gave off a strong sense of danger, making him seem less like a police officer and more like a fugitive wanted for murder.
The moment Gordon entered, his expression changed, as this person, who seemed so out of place among police officers, appeared.
Seeing Gordon's appearance, Lucius naturally understood his background and simply stood quietly to the side, waiting for him to finish reporting the casualties.
The officer who made the report ignored the two silent people in the room, finished his work, put down the report, and left quickly without any hesitation.
From his appearance to his disappearance, he never uttered a single word unrelated to his work, yet his very existence seemed to signify something...
"It looks like the Penguins are getting anxious..."
Only after the special officer left did Sheriff Gordon clasp his hands under his chin and mutter softly.
Seeing a policeman like this for the first time, Lucius asked curiously, "Was that an undercover agent for the gang?"
"...Just a mouthpiece bought off by the gang. He can do ordinary work, but he'll sell out information for profit..."
There aren't many police officers who completely side with the gangs, but countless others have completely sided with money and profit.
"I'm sorry, Lucius, the gang members we caught this time cannot be considered criminals, nor can they be convicted."
Gordon pointed to the few pages of statements on the table, looking rather troubled.
"ha?"
Are those guys who randomly fire in the streets and carry fully automatic illegal weapons really not dealt with even when they're caught in the police station?
Faced with Lucius's astonishment, Sheriff Gordon was also quite helpless:
"I'm sorry, but the police department doesn't have time to deal with those guys right now because the most crucial evidence, which is that the car carrying the 'contraband' is missing, is missing. Without that evidence, the most critical charges cannot be brought against them."
"As long as those guys can shut up the citizens injured in this accident, through compensation or threats, they won't be prosecuted for assault with a weapon."
As for common offenses like illegal possession of firearms, those guys don't care at all. They have plenty of ways to get away with it. In Gotham, there are plenty of lawyers who are good at wrangling.
This is also why Gordon is so averse to the existence of the Penguin...
Ordinary thugs pose little threat, but organized, sophisticated gangs that exploit the law and loopholes—those are the real threats to Gotham!
"More importantly, we need to deal with that batch of contraband now. That's the top priority. As for the Penguin, we don't have the energy to deal with them for the time being unless there's a further threat."
After saying this, Gordon looked at Lucius's face and was surprised to find that the young man's face was full of approval, without a trace of the dejection and frustration that came from having his credit revoked. This really surprised Gordon.
"I thought you'd be unhappy..."
Seeing the sheriff's surprise, Lucius chuckled: "I know, those are just small fry. Even if they're thrown in jail, the crime in this city won't decrease..."
Unless the gangs are completely eradicated, along with the environment in which they exist—something even Lord Wayne couldn't do...
"It's good that you've come to your senses... Although it's difficult to convict the 'criminal' you arrested, I'll apply to the higher-ups for an honorary badge and reward for your contribution this time."
The new police officer was reasonable, even shrewd to the point of being unlike a hot-blooded young man, which impressed Gordon.
You know... in his youth, he was full of vigor and dared to mess with anyone. Before a certain Batman appeared, Gordon almost single-handedly fought against the dark side of Gotham.
Unfortunately, the more Gordon struggled, the more alone he found himself...
Thugs, colleagues, high-ranking police officers... when trouble really comes, almost everything is on his side.
He was clearly speaking out for justice, yet Gordon was surrounded by an empty house, as if he were the only one going against the tide in the city, the one who should never have existed...
It was witnessing so many setbacks and darkness that Gordon saw the true face of Gotham, and was forced to compromise and find another way to uphold justice here...
Perhaps, this is reality.
"I don't really care... I'd be happy with a bonus rather than a medal." Lucius didn't kill the gang members on the spot, but instead destroyed their weapons as gently as possible, in order to minimize conflict.
Provoking the penguin is beyond his current capabilities; what he urgently needs right now is economic resources...
money?
Oh, right, this guy wasn't exactly well-behaved before he came to Gotham. He's a nice guy, but also a womanizer who loves flirting with girls...
"I'll arrange the bonus as soon as possible, so don't do anything reckless..."
Grinning, Gordon gave the young man a few words of advice; he certainly didn't want to one day have to go to the red-light district to find this capable lieutenant...
After all, Gotham's various shady businesses are notorious.
"By the way, you mentioned leaving a GPS tracker under the suspect vehicle. What model of tracker did you use? Where is the location information?"
When the topic of being interrupted came up, Gordon took a sip of the coffee on the table and lowered his voice slightly.
"Huh? All I have is a locator. Shouldn't the tracking device be at the police station?"
Shouldn't Chief Gordon know the model number of the equipment that the police station delivered?
"What?! But we didn't provide you with a locator! Didn't you provide that tracking device yourself?!"
Gordon stared wide-eyed at the officer in front of him in disbelief.
From the beginning, he only wanted Lucius to confirm the general location of the contraband; he never prepared any tracking devices!
"How can that be..."
His expression changed slightly, and recalling the dark shape of the locator, Lucius instantly guessed the answer:
"Oh no..."
That thing... Bruce Wayne put it there without permission!!!
None of this was Sheriff Gordon's intention! He had been used by Wayne!
"Batman should already be tracking down that shipment of contraband!!"
