Chapter 73 Rita, Worth Two Grams of Gold
Wizards' physical constitutions far surpass those of ordinary people. For example, Seamus Finnigan frequently causes explosions, yet those explosions, which could have been fatal, only leave him with a blackened face and an afro. If this could still be explained by the protection of Hogwarts, then Neville, the "legendary survivor," would step forward at this moment.
When Neville was a child, his uncle Alge always tried to force him to show some magical abilities. He once pushed Neville off the Black Lake dock, or hoisted Neville ankle-up from an upstairs window and then let him fall off on his own... but Neville was never seriously injured.
Rita recovered quickly, though she was unable to cast spells and felt somewhat lost. During this time, some reinforcements arrived, but were quickly dealt with by Rune.
The bodies lay neatly arranged in the square, blood gushing from their chests. Some teetered on the brink of death, gasping for breath, hoping to alleviate their suffocation, but it was all in vain. With each drop of blood, they would die in the cold. Some emitted low groans, but soon even those sounds faded. An eerie silence filled the space, and Rita's eyes betrayed a pang of pity: "They shouldn't have died here..."
Surprisingly, Rune nodded as well: "Indeed, but as soldiers, they were certainly prepared. My friend..."
He patted Rita on the shoulder. Although he had just killed many, many people, Rita surprisingly did not feel afraid of him. On the contrary, she felt quite at ease with Rune's physical contact.
Rune walked through the gaps between the corpses, his shoes making a splattering sound as they stepped into the pool of blood on the ground. "I was just doing my duty for them. Perhaps in their own eyes, they were fighting to protect humanity, and we were the evil, shameless wizards. But in our eyes, we are the righteous ones who came to rescue innocent wizards."
He looked at Rita and said, "This is war. There is never an absolute distinction between good and evil in war. If you fall behind, you will only be attacked."
Although something was hindering the spellcasting, it didn't prevent Rune from casting Legilimency. While the soldiers certainly didn't know much, Rune still knew about the treatment of the captured wizards.
The children who hadn't yet started school were taken to one of the camps and isolated from the others. The soldiers didn't know what the people in that camp were doing, but they knew very well what would happen to the adult wizards who had been captured.
Generally speaking, if there are truly rare experimental subjects, scientists will not conduct destructive experiments on them, meaning they won't dissect them as depicted in TV dramas or movies. But what if these experimental subjects can be purchased with money, and the quantity isn't that rare? Then it's certainly possible to indulge in a little luxury occasionally.
Rita pondered Rune's words, "Backwardness only invites attack," and followed him closely. Rune didn't immediately go to rescue the wizard; instead, he chose to head directly to the core area of the region. There were armored vehicles guarding it, but the five-centimeter-thick steel plates didn't stop Rune's hands from piercing the chests of the soldiers inside. The rockets, aside from creating a firework effect and expending more magic power on Rune, had no effect whatsoever. Although the soldiers' resistance was resolute, it couldn't change their fate of death.
Rune ripped open the thick alloy door, revealing the researchers inside still engrossed in their work. The sturdy door could indeed defend against ordinary Aurors, but it also blocked out all sound.
"Hello everyone!" Rune shouted, but he didn't really need to say anything to get everyone's attention. Everyone was already staring at him in fear when he ripped open the door. His shout only triggered a series of screams.
Rune grabbed a researcher at random, about to cast Legilimency on him, when the man instantly burst into flames. With a desperate scream, he was reduced to ashes in a mere three seconds. Clearly, this was the work of a wizard, perhaps a curse or some kind of ritual magic. But whatever the method, it meant Rune could no longer use Legilimency to find the culprit.
With a sigh, Rune gave the researchers a swift end, then sat down at the computer and began performing operations that Rita couldn't comprehend. Thanks to technological advancements, the computer system at this time already had an operating system. Those wizards might be able to ensure that people wouldn't leak secrets, but they couldn't cast spells on the computer—in fact, creating a method that could still kill and silence witnesses even in a strong magnetic field was already the limit of what those unknown wizards could achieve.
Rune opened file after file, searching through document after document, thoroughly examining the secrets he had researched over many years. It must be said that while the Muggles present couldn't cast spells, their understanding of magic itself far surpassed that of most wizards.
In particular, the research on the nature of magic solved a long-standing question for Rune: why did his magic power increase so quickly after fusing with Superman's bloodline? Superman himself doesn't know magic.
Research indicates a correlation between the amount of magic a wizard possesses and their physical strength. A stronger physique allows for the storage of more magic. Furthermore, these Muggles have discovered that wizards' cells generally possess the ability to convert biological energy into magic; in other words, wizards' cells can convert physical strength into magical power.
This not only explains Rune's question but also why wizards' magical power gradually increases during their childhood. However, many questions remain unanswered, such as why magical power experiences an explosive increase during birthdays and the true nature of magical power. These researchers haven't found a definitive answer—because their subsequent research projects all shifted towards extending lifespan.
Magic does have the ability to extend lifespan. For example, the previous headmaster, Armando Dippert, lived to be over three hundred years old, and he didn't have a Philosopher's Stone to prolong his life. This might explain why Muggles would target this small group of wizards—those old fogies who have already reached high positions and are unwilling to die.
Rune continued his search and finally found a breakthrough—a document mentioned a deal with the Purifiers. They were responsible for capturing the vast majority of older wizards. Wizards with special skills commanded higher prices in the magical world. For example, Rita, as an Animagus, was worth two kilograms of gold, while alchemists, potion masters, and others fetched five kilograms of gold.
"Look, your price is a full two kilograms of gold!" Rune laughed, pointing to the price in front of Rita. Rita, however, asked timidly, "Shouldn't we go rescue the other wizards?"
