Chapter 54: Whose Crisis?
After the script was finalized, Gray was busy collecting the bodies of Captain America and Hawkeye, but little did he know that a new group of actors had arrived on set.
"Gwen, look! It's the X-Men!"
The smoke of battle had not yet cleared when Jessica and Gwen, dragging their wounded bodies, were trying to find a safe place to catch their breath.
Suddenly, a sharp whistling sound ripped through the sky. The two instinctively looked up and saw a cool-looking aircraft speeding overhead, causing the trees on the street to shake violently.
The aircraft, entirely black, hovered steadily in the middle of the street not far away, kicking up clouds of dust. The prominent "X" marking on its fuselage shone brightly in the twilight, making its owner instantly recognizable.
"Wow! It's Cyclops! He was my idol back in junior high, and he's even cooler in person than on TV!" Jessica exclaimed, both surprised and delighted, grabbing Gwen's arm and shaking it repeatedly.
"You'd better not let your boyfriend hear that. He's incredibly petty." Gwen rolled her eyes at Jessica helplessly. In terms of fame, the entire X-Men combined weren't as famous as her. Was it really necessary to get so worked up?
"He's not here..." Jessica quickly lowered her voice, glancing around furtively, worried that something might have happened to Cyclops.
The hatch slowly opened, emitting a deep mechanical exhaust sound. The first thing that came into view was Laser Eyes, dressed in his signature black uniform, with distinctive sunglasses that made him look cool and composed.
Following closely behind was Storm, her long white hair fluttering in the breeze. Her expression was cold and stern, and with a slight raise of her hand, faint electric currents surged through the air.
"I sensed a powerful magnetic field; Magneto seems to have just been in a fight."
"I remember that guy is almost 60 years old. He should learn from me how to cultivate his character." It was Wolverine Logan who said this.
Due to repeated drunken mistakes, he hadn't been on a mission for a long time, but his wildness remained undiminished. When he saw some reckless mutants surrounding him, he took a heavy step forward and delivered a vicious blow to the heart.
With a hiss, blood splattered.
Logan.
A slightly reproachful, aged voice came from behind the plane. Jean Grey pushed Professor X out of the cabin and said helplessly, "The mutants here are innocent. They have simply lost their minds and are being controlled by a powerful psychic."
"Really? But they don't look like puppets."
Logan shrugged, then dodged a mutant's attack by sidestepping ten gleaming claws that pierced his back.
"Mind suggestion," Jean Grey explained. "Controlling tens of thousands of mutants at the same time would be difficult even for the Professor. The other party cleverly used a little trick to make them work for Magneto through suggestion."
"Is an implication enough to make people risk their lives?" Logan shook his head and withdrew his bloodstained claws. He knew that these people risked their lives because, deep down, they also longed for a free and equal life like ordinary people.
"No matter what, Magneto has gone too far this time, we must stop him!" Aurora quickly spoke up to smooth things over. Every time they argued about right and wrong, as long as it involved mutants, Rogue would disagree with the professor, and occasionally, in a fit of rage, he would wish he could stab the professor to death.
"Besides Magneto, we also face an even more terrifying enemy." Professor X, sitting in his wheelchair, said in a deep and slow voice with a solemn expression, "I can clearly sense an evil force, like a thick, dark cloud, pressing heavily over Washington."
"Homelanders!"
In an instant, everyone's gazes suddenly sharpened, becoming extremely solemn, and they couldn't help but think of Colossus, who had been brutally murdered; the horrific scene seemed to be right before their eyes.
"I tried to influence him using my mental powers." Professor X closed his eyes slightly, a pained expression on his face. "But I found it almost futile. Homelander's inner world is like a quagmire filled with chaos and madness; to control him, one must delve into this quagmire..."
Professor X paused, a hint of hesitation in his eyes: "Invading his brain would be easy for me, but such an approach carries unpredictable risks."
I can't be sure if I'll come out unscathed, and what's even more terrifying is, even if I do, will that be the real me? Or just a puppet of desire, corrupted and assimilated by my homeland's people?
Professor X's words left everyone in disbelief, and for a moment the air seemed to freeze.
It's hard to imagine just how evil a person has to be to make Professor X resist forming a mental connection with them.
"No need to worry too much. If it really comes to a point where there's no other way, I'll seal his memories. Even if I'm corrupted, it won't matter much. At that time, I'll trouble Qin to erase my memories as well."
Professor X smiled faintly, trying to reassure everyone.
However, everyone's expressions remained solemn, with Jean Grey's being particularly complex. As a powerful psychic, she understood all too well what sealing memories meant for Professor X.
It wasn't just the loss of fragments of memory, but also the diminishing of his immense power. From now on, this professor, who once stood at the pinnacle of psychic abilities, might not even be able to unleash half of his former strength.
"Thank you for your hard work, two brave girls."
Just then, Professor X's gentle and mellow voice softly drifted into Gwen and Jessica's minds, a voice that contained a reassuring power.
The two were taken aback at first, then looked at each other and walked out from behind a car, looking slightly embarrassed.
"Um, Professor, we didn't mean to eavesdrop, we just happened to be here..." Gwen said with an embarrassed smile.
Professor X gave a kind smile and gently shook his head: "There's no need to feel sorry about it. I know you've just gone through a tough battle, and I understand that you've always worked tirelessly to uphold justice."
"Oh my god! It's Spider-Woman!"
Suddenly, Aurora covered her mouth, her eyes filled with surprise and excitement, her voice rising several decibels involuntarily: "I actually saw you in person! Oh my god, my... my students are all your fans! Although it's a bit presumptuous... could you please give me your autograph?"
Excitedly, she pulled out a photo from who-knows-where, as if by magic. It showed Spider Woman hanging upside down on a street lamp, striking a cute and playful pose.
"Aurora, we are the X-Men!"
Upon seeing this, Scott couldn't help but slap his forehead, his face full of helplessness.
Aurora didn't hold back at all, immediately retorting, "Scott, stop pretending and just admit it! Your phone's wallpaper and the posters in your room are all Spider-Woman!"
Scott's face twitched slightly as he tried to remain calm, saying, "...Isn't this what the students like? They always borrow my phone to look up information. What can I do?"
Gwen had no idol baggage whatsoever and was very happy to be loved by everyone. She generously accepted the photos and signed them for Aurora and a slightly embarrassed Scott.
Then, she turned to Professor X and asked earnestly, "You must have something you want to tell us, right?"
Professor X said sincerely, "Yes, child, we are facing an unprecedented challenge, and I sincerely hope to invite you and your friends to join us in protecting this city."
"That suits me perfectly!" Gwen agreed almost without hesitation.
In contrast, Jessica, standing to the side, seemed somewhat hesitant.
For some reason, from the beginning, she felt that there was something different hidden in the kind old man's eyes when he looked at her, and that look made her feel a little uneasy.
However, seeing that Gwen had readily agreed, she couldn't refuse. After a moment's thought, she nodded: "It's an honor to fight alongside the X-Men."
