Chapter 65 Argument
Chapter 65 Argument
Urgent! I need help online. I'm only fourteen years old, and the bosses of two of the top high-tech companies in the country are vying to get me to join their companies. What should I do?
That's pretty much how Peter Parker feels right now.
Although Spider-Man felt that the two superheroes in front of him should know his identity, Peter still chose to deceive himself and said, "Gentlemen, I am just an ordinary junior high school student. I really don't understand why you would personally ask me to work for you? And I don't remember ever applying for any scholarship."
Tony ignored what Peter was saying. The retro computer on the desk caught his attention, and he pointed at it curiously, asking, "Where did you get this thing?"
"Uh, I made this myself; I picked the materials out of the garbage dump," Peter explained.
"Oh, picking up trash, aha." Although Tony didn't say it explicitly, his behavior clearly showed that he valued Peter more at this moment.
"Now let me ask you a few obvious questions." Tony waved his hand, and a holographic quantum screen appeared in front of the three. On the screen, a person wearing a red bodysuit and a spider-head mask was dealing with a car thief, easily smashing a car away. "Three thousand pounds of force, four miles per hour, impressive. That's you, isn't it?"
Peter licked his lips, trying to explain.
Miller took out a stick and poked the suspicious-looking ceiling, causing clothes to fall to the ground. Peter covered his head with his hands and cried, "No!"
Tony glanced at the clothes on the floor. "So, you're fighting crime in these pajamas, Spider-Boy?"
"Spider-Man, Mr. Stark," Peter emphasized.
"So, who else knows about this?" Tony glanced at Miller. "Besides the two of us."
"—Nobody." Peter wanted to say Matt's name, but remembering Matt's instruction not to mention him to others, he didn't. As for the gangsters he encountered in the underground boxing matches, Matt had already dealt with them, and the audience had never seen his face.
"Your beautiful aunt doesn't know either?"
"Yes, she doesn't know. If she did, she would be terrified."
While the two were talking, Miller was fiddling with the uniform on the ground, feeling that it was even worse than the bodysuit from the first game, looking loose and baggy.
Tony glanced at it, frowned, and said, "You need a better uniform. I can help you with that."
Peter swallowed hard; he clearly knew he needed a new uniform.
"So, why would you be willing to do those things, you know, like fighting crime and stuff?" Tony Stark glanced at Miller and then asked Peter this question.
"I was just an ordinary person before; I suddenly gained this ability—"
"uh-huh"
"Then I thought I'd use this ability, you know, to make some money and ease Aunt May's burden."
"What do you choose to do?"
"At first, I wanted to participate in Mr. Miller's 'Miller's Game' after all, the prize money was one million US dollars. With that money, Aunt May could relax a lot, and I wouldn't have to worry about my future tuition fees. But when I registered, I found out that I was too young to participate."
"So, what are you planning to do next?"
"After that, I chose to fight in underground boxing rings because I was very strong and fast, so I kept winning, but—"
"But what?"
"But I think that's pointless. I feel that since I have the ability, I shouldn't waste it on this. Instead, I should solve problems that I can solve but others can't."
"Why?" Upon hearing this, Tony's nonchalant expression suddenly turned serious.
"If I have the ability to solve a problem but don't take action, then if something bad happens because of it, I will feel responsible."
Tony touched his chin and glanced at Miller.
Miller easily understood Tony's meaning from that look: "Your awareness is worse than a middle school student!" He then rolled his eyes and replied with his eyes, "I've saved way more people than you."
But whether Tony lacked Miller's ability to read eyes or was deliberately oblivious, he turned to look at Peter.
"So, you want to help the weak and make the world a better place, right, Spider-Man?"
"Yes, yes, that's exactly what I think." Peter felt that Stark had spoken his mind perfectly.
Little did they know, this was also Stark's idea, and he had always done it.
Miller found it boring to see that the little spider in front of him was the same Iron Spider from the Marvel movies.
After just a few words, it seemed like Tony was starting to treat Peter like a son.
Miller felt it was time for him to step in.
"Peter, do you think you should make yourself better before making the world a better place? Join my company and you'll instantly become a star, gaining massive attention. I'll also create a character just for you in the phenomenal game 'League of Legends,' and you'll get a cut of every penny from the skin sales. That's enough for you to be financially independent and live a good life with your Aunt May. You can buy any kind of sports car you want outside in the future."
Peter had to admit that he was tempted.
"Miller Cooper! What are you doing? Don't try to influence him with your money-obsessed mentality!" Tony glared at Miller.
"Mr. Stark, weren't you just guiding Peter with words too?" Miller said nonchalantly, pointing out that Tony had also been manipulating Peter with words.
"I'm just asking him to say what he really thinks!"
"Isn't Peter's real thought to want a better life for himself and his family?"
"You're using a fallacy to confuse the issue."
"It's better than sending a fourteen-year-old boy to the battlefield; he's only fourteen!"
"Who said I was going to send him to the battlefield?"
"Stop fooling yourself. If you don't want to send him to the battlefield, why give him armor? With his extraordinary strength and speed, what difficulties could Peter possibly encounter in dealing with these petty criminals?"
"You think everyone can heal as quickly as you? I gave him the armor to better protect him!"
Peter said that he actually does have healing abilities, but he just doesn't dare to say it.
"Can you guarantee he won't be sent to the battlefield?"
"He has the ability, and he's willing to contribute his share, so why can't he step up? Does he want to be like you, possessing power but forever hiding in the background? Waiting until everything is over before coming out?"
"What good would it do you even if you went? What problem could you possibly solve in the end? The aliens were dealt with by the Secret Ones. You weren't even qualified to participate in the battle to seal the Secret Ones. You and I are both just spectators!"
As the two argued more and more intensely, the revelations they made terrified Peter. Peter felt that this couldn't go on, and he was worried that Aunt May would notice what was happening inside and discover his Spider-Man identity. So he fired the spider web he had made towards their mouths.
Two quick whooshes.
"Mmm, mmm" x2
Peter breathed a sigh of relief; now the world was quiet.
