Chapter 63 The Mysterious Postman
Latias floated lightly in the air, wearing a postman's hat on his head and a postman's bag hanging between his right wings.
Upon landing, the surrounding light distorted, and the next second she transformed into a girl in a postman's uniform.
Her short, deep red hair exuded vitality, and her amber eyes blinked as she rushed over and hugged Ye Luo.
"Ye Luo~, I've come to play with you."
Her name was Raya, which was what she was called when she worked as a postman.
"Raja, don't you have a job as a postman?"
Raya released Ye Luo and said with a smile.
"No need today, I'm on vacation, I mean, you know, it's called 'annual leave,' so I came to visit Ye Luo!"
She was a little more familiar with human language than before, but not much, and there were still many words that Raya didn't understand.
For example, holidays are referred to as "rest days" and "annual leave," which are essentially the same thing, yet they have several different names.
Human language is truly amazing.
Raya playfully tugged at Ye Luo's hand and asked.
"Where are we going? What are Ye Luo's plans?"
Although he looks like a human, he is still a carefree Pokémon at heart. Ye Luo reveals his plan.
"I plan to go to Golden City."
Raya tilted his head and blinked thoughtfully.
"Golden City...you mean that city with lots of tall buildings? I just came from there. Want me to give you a ride on my back?"
Laia was very confident in his speed in the sky; as long as he sat on Latias's back, he could reach any place on Earth in an instant.
After all, she was the fastest messenger in the post office.
"The only creature that can compete with my speed in delivering messages is a fat Dragonite. Although it's called a 'Dragonite,' it's still not as fast as me."
Raya proudly puffed out his chest and talked about his work.
As they walked through the forest, Raya and Ye Luo held hands. Ye Luo tried to shake them off, but it was no use.
"It's inconvenient to walk hand in hand on a bumpy, rough path. Do we really have to walk like this?"
"Um?"
Raya blinked.
"But when I see many people walking like this in the park, I feel happy, don't I?"
Like a child, Raya raised the hand she was being held high and swung it back and forth as she walked forward.
The trainer's journey into the unknown forest, with the ever-present threat of attacks from wild Pokémon, suddenly felt like a school field trip for elementary school students.
With Meloetta humming a little tune on her shoulder, Raya hummed along with Meloetta's melody.
It's become more like a picnic.
Ye Luo felt that she should hold up a red flag in her free hand and cosplay as the teacher leading the group.
"Ye Luo, I wanted to ask when we're having dinner. I'm a little hungry."
"It's only 10 a.m., please bear with it, little Raya, we'll eat at noon."
Raya wasn't angry when she heard this; instead, she smiled and retorted.
"I'm not that small, you see, I'm only a little shorter than Ye Luo. At the post office, a lot of people call me 'senior' now."
Raya was very proud of this, especially when she casually ordered around those juniors, she felt a strange sense of accomplishment.
Think about it, all the other Pokémon in the post office get along well with humans, or at most, they are partners of the same generation, but she can order humans around at will.
Raya found this very interesting.
"Those humans are really interesting. When I asked them to bring me snacks, they were not angry at all. Instead, they were happy to offer the food up to me."
Even though Raya only wanted the bag of potato chips the other person was holding, when she said, "I want to eat this bag of potato chips," she was surprised to find a corner of her worktable filled with all sorts of snacks the next day.
Raya was very pleased with herself, feeling that she could get offerings just by saying a few words, and that everyone in the post office had to listen to her.
Ye Luo felt that they probably treated her as a mascot, which was different from what Raya thought; they were just feeding her.
Raya is a top-notch postman, known for delivering mail faster and in greater quantities than anyone else in the post office.
As a respected and capable senior employee in the post office, she was naturally admired by many newcomers. In addition, her lively and childlike manner made her a powerful mascot, and the younger employees in the post office would happily take care of her.
Seeing that Raya was enjoying herself at the post office, Ye Luo smiled with satisfaction and couldn't help but pat her head.
It's not that simple for a Pokémon to integrate into human society, let alone from a human perspective.
Latias can transform into a human form and wants to actively enter human society; she still has a lot to learn.
"I guess so. I only recently learned to distinguish between the words 'in a while' and 'right away'."
Sometimes when they call out to humans, they say "a while," but Raya never understands how long that means, as there's no time scale.
Latias is a Psychic-type Pokémon, so Latias can certainly use telepathy to read minds, but it still has difficulty understanding the meaning of some words.
So she used her unique way of understanding to arrive at a new set of conclusions.
Raya held up two fingers to compare.
"If the other person says 'in a while,' I'll go about my own business; if they say 'soon,' I'll wait a bit."
He's busy with things like playing on his phone. Just recently, Raya finally got his own smartphone.
She used to play the game that Ye Luo had discarded, but she's still not familiar with it.
Raya took out the latest red and white smartphone from her bag and showed it to Ye Luo like a treasure.
"Look, the phone case is just like mine."
The back is a red and white shell, with a silhouette of Latias in the center.
This was a special Latias smartphone, custom-made for Laya's Pokémon, as a year-end prize to reward the ace mail carrier.
Ye Luo asked.
"So you came all this way to see me just to show off the smartphone you got?"
Raya chuckled and said cheerfully.
"That's partly true."
"What's the other half of the reason?"
Raya put away her phone, took Ye Luo's hand again, blinked, and said.
"Of course it's to see Ye Luo, we're so close."
To an outsider, these words might have a different meaning in this context, but Latias meant something else entirely. What exactly was that meaning?
It's normal for Pokémon to be close to their trainers. Although Latias is now in human form, it still thinks like a Pokémon, so it's actually very innocent.
It's just that we have a close relationship.
"(★≧▽^)Think what you want."
"Where did you learn that expression?"
"My colleague taught me this trick; a junior colleague told me to use it to win the heart of someone I like."
After saying that, Raya blinked again.
Seeing the lively little postman, Ye Luo couldn't help but feel that the trip was much more relaxing.
However, despite the richness and diversity of human society, Ye Luo still advised her not to engrave everything into her genes.
