Hogwarts: The Witch Education Handbook
Chapter 22, Lesson 1 of the New School Year
The Great Hall of Hogwarts.
The young wizards were sitting around a long table enjoying a hearty breakfast.
Suddenly, a flurry of flapping wings shattered the tranquility.
The young wizards looked up and saw hundreds of owls filing into the Great Hall of Hegwarts through the doors and windows.
The owls circled in the air for a while, then, like precise postmen, accurately delivered the letters and newspapers to each young wizard.
Percy, who was a prefect, also received two packages.
One of them was the Daily Prophet, which he subscribed to, a newspaper that helped him understand the changes in the magical world.
"Look, the Daily Prophet!"
Clearly, he wasn't the only one who subscribed to The Daily Prophet.
"Professor Sean is on the cover of the Daily Prophet again!" a Gryffindor student exclaimed.
"Professor Sean is so handsome!"
Exclamations of surprise echoed throughout the auditorium, piquing the curiosity of students who hadn't subscribed to the Daily Prophet. They crowded around the person holding the newspaper, eager to find out more.
All I could see was the front page of the newspaper.
The renowned adventurer and author, Mr. Sean Phillips, has been appointed as the Professor of Defense Against the Dark Arts at Hogwarts!
Below the headline was a photo of Sean.
In the photo, Sean has a firm and deep gaze, an upright posture, and an indescribable sense of majesty and charm. He holds a magic wand, as if he is ready to face any challenge at any time.
"He's so handsome..."
This was the subconscious reaction of many students after seeing the photo, but then they thought about how such an excellent professor was about to give them a lesson, and they couldn't help but feel excited.
Of course, this excitement was limited to the young wizards in grades one through three.
Meanwhile, students in other grades became increasingly dejected.
They opened the second page of the Daily Prophet.
The above is a statement issued by Lockhart.
He also wanted to apply for a professorship at Hogwarts, hoping to work alongside his junior and accomplished colleague, Phillips...
Of course, this did not attract the attention of the young wizards present.
Meanwhile, the other young wizards also opened their packages, which mostly contained works by Sean Phillips sent from their homes, including some classic and collector's editions.
Some of them were shouting letters.
"Get Professor Sean to sign these books, and if possible, also ask him for a signed photo..."
What's strange is that Hermione, a huge fan of Professor Shaun, is not among this group of excited young wizards.
She stared at the empty plate in front of her, lost in thought.
The images of those books kept replaying in Hermione's mind, disturbing her peace of mind.
What kind of book is it?
Could it be that kind of book?
But it's normal for a professor who teaches Defense Against the Dark Arts to read those kinds of books, right...?
...
Sean's first lesson was with Hufflepuff, a third-grader.
When Sean walked in dragging a suitcase, the entire place was silent at first, then erupted in deafening cheers.
They were honored to be the first to take a course taught by their own senior alumni.
Sean glanced around and found that, without exception, every student had one or more novels on their desk, in addition to their textbooks.
This gave him a real headache.
Although he had anticipated this situation, he still underestimated his own charm.
With so many books to sign one by one, when will it ever end?
Sometimes, being too famous isn't a good thing.
However, in order to cultivate a good image at school and thus gain their votes in the future, Sean secretly decided to collect all the books after class and sign them.
Sean glanced at the little badgers below the stage, coughed twice, and pressed his hands down. Soon, the classroom returned to its previous quiet.
Everyone was eagerly anticipating what Professor Sean would say.
"Hello everyone, I am Sean Phillips, your senior and professor. I believe you all know me. If you don't, please read today's Daily Prophet, which describes my deeds in detail. So I won't waste my breath introducing myself here."
Laughter erupted in the classroom. The students were amused by Sean's witty and humorous words. Clearly, Professor Sean had also heard about the little incident that happened in the auditorium that morning.
Sean smiled at everyone and continued.
"It is an honor to teach you all. I mean it. A few years ago, when I was sitting in the audience just like you, listening to Professor Vasek Fernandez teach about Defense Against the Dark Arts, I never imagined that one day I would be standing on this stage."
That's a lie; he dreams of becoming a professor.
"Professor Vasek was a teacher I greatly respected, and his teachings have profoundly influenced me. Now, I stand here not only to impart to you the techniques for defending against dark magic, but also in the hope of passing on his love for magic and his care for his students, just as he did."
Sean paused for a moment, then continued.
"From the moment I signed the letter of appointment and officially became a professor of Defense Against the Dark Arts, I secretly vowed to do everything in my power to nurture you into people who will be useful to the Ministry of Magic and the wizarding world in the future."
The honest little badgers in the audience were moved by Sean's sincere words, and some of the more sentimental girls even had tears welling up in their eyes.
"So in the days to come, I will be strict with you, because I hope you can learn something truly useful from my classes." Sean's tone became serious at this point: "Defense Against the Dark Arts is a very important course; it concerns the safety of each and every one of us. Therefore, I hope you will take every class seriously, study hard, and continuously improve yourselves."
Seemingly not wanting his class to appear too serious, Sean opened his large suitcase, which he had dragged there, while speaking.
The little badgers saw Professor Sean take out... a bunch of cards... and a large chessboard?
Sean placed the chessboard and cards on the podium: "Now we're going to play a little game. Would anyone like to come up and demonstrate?"
As soon as the words were spoken, the little badgers eagerly raised their hands, some even standing up, afraid of missing this opportunity.
Sean randomly selected a badger boy with the best posture and glasses, and asked him to walk to the front of the stage, opposite the chessboard.
"What's your name?"
"Steed Bonu."
"Mr. Steed Bonu, draw a card." Sean spread out a large pile of wizard cards (character cards) in front of him like opening a fan, allowing him to choose one.
Bono immediately picked the one with the best image quality and the most handsome appearance—Professor Sean's character card.
Next, Sean picked out a Snape wizard card and placed the two wizard cards in their corresponding positions on the board. His and Snape's images were projected onto the board like holograms.
So cool!
After the two characters appeared, about five or six character cards flew out of the deck: "Vampire," "Werewolf," "Grindelwald," "Dementor," and "Dark Wizard," forming a pincer movement around Snape and Shaun on the board.
Sean drew two sets of four cards each from the deck, handing one set to Bonu while winking at him with a playful yet encouraging look, saying, "Fight alongside me!"
Upon hearing this, the badgers in the audience erupted in cheers.
Their hearts were filled with envy and longing, because this was the opportunity to fight alongside Senior Sean, an experience they had dreamed of.
The thought of fighting against evil dark wizards, vampires, and other dark forces alongside Senior Sean filled them with excitement and anticipation.
They could almost see themselves fighting alongside Sean, facing danger together, and ultimately achieving victory.
They gazed at Bonu on the stage with intense, burning eyes, filled with envy. How they longed to be like Bonu, standing there, fighting alongside their senior Sean, becoming the center of attention.
Being in the center of attention, Bonu clearly felt the intense atmosphere around him.
He stood there, holding the card Sean had handed him, his heart filled with mixed emotions.
Can he really do it well?
Will he hold Professor Sean back?
Will he fail at a crucial moment?
Fighting alongside Professor Sean was a rare experience for him, but it also brought him immense pressure.
He looked down at the cards in his hand, took a deep breath, and tried to calm his excited emotions.
If, he meant if.
If only one person is left in a war, then that last person will always be the Hufflepuff Badger.
He never learned to back down in the face of danger, because he carried the honor of Hufflepuff on his shoulders, damn it.
If you want war, then I will fight. So, come on!
Sean stared in bewilderment as a faint, flickering flame suddenly reflected off Bonu's smooth lenses. He was puzzled but deeply shocked.
"Come on." Sean first demonstrated for Bonu, playing a spell card—the Stunning Spell.
On the chessboard, "Little Snape" drew his wand and, with lightning speed, unleashed a dazzling green light at the "vampire" within it.
With a low growl from "Little Snape," the "vampire" character was instantly knocked to the ground, unconscious.
The entire movement was fluid and seamless, leaving Bonu and the little badgers in the audience speechless.
"See, that's the power of the Stunning Curse," Sean explained with a smile. "However, every spell has its own techniques and precautions, such as the timing of activation and target selection. We need to gradually explore and learn these in actual combat. Of course, these spells are not something you can learn at your age."
As Bonu listened to Sean's explanation, the tension in his heart gradually dissipated.
He took a deep breath and, mimicking the others, drew a "Disarming Spell" card from his hand and played it.
On the chessboard, "Little Shaun" also waved his wand, moving even faster than "Little Snape."
But the "dark wizard" on the other side seemed to have anticipated this, and with a slight dodge, he dodged the attack, and a shattering spell burst forth from his wand.
Bonu watched as the black light drew closer and closer to him, but he seemed to be paralyzed with fear, standing motionless in place.
"Use a defensive spell." Sean's steady voice echoed in Bonu's ears.
Only then did he come to his senses, as if he had found his anchor, and looked down at the three cards he had left in his hand.
His heart was pounding, and his fingers trembled as he flipped through the three cards in his hand. Finally, his gaze settled on a spell card that read "Ironclad Spell".
As the black light approached, "Little Sean" reacted, shouting "Armor for Protection!" and an invisible barrier formed in front of him.
The black light from the Shattering Spell struck the barrier formed by the Defense Spell, producing a deafening roar. Amidst the scattering of light, the barrier steadily blocked the attack of the black light.
To Bonu's surprise, he succeeded!
But the battle was far from over. It was Dementor's turn to attack. He floated on the board, wearing a black hooded cloak and a gray body that looked like a rotting corpse, slowly approaching Snape.
"Watch out, Professor!" The little badgers below couldn't help but cry out in alarm at the sight. Even with the chessboard on the ground, they could feel the dark, cold, and putrid aura emanating from the Dementors.
Sean knew, of course, that he couldn't let the Dementors get close to his body.
Fortunately, he had this—the Guardian Angel Spell Card.
"Summon the divine guardians!"
A doe, radiating a warm and harmonious white light, leaped from Snape's wand and gracefully soared into the air, hurtling towards the Dementors.
The doe's white light collided with the Dementor's dark aura, producing a piercing sound. In just an instant, the Dementor vanished without a trace.
Since it was a demonstration phase, Sean lowered the difficulty, setting all monster cards to have only one hit point.
"This is a profound spell; only those with pure hearts can summon a Patronus," Sean explained. "This is far too advanced for you. You'll learn about this in sixth grade when you're preparing for the NEWT exam."
Next, Sean drew another card, and when he saw it, he smiled.
It's time to end the game.
Using that unique spell card, Sean activated the exclusive skill on the "Snape" wizard card—Sword of Despair.
