Superman from the comics: Starting with the Black Robe
Chapter 18 The Right Thing
What is the meaning of human existence in this world?
Night had fallen, and Joey nestled in Clara's arms, pondering this question.
"Where have you been all day? I can't get in touch with you at all, it's really worrying me."
Storm played with the small curls on Joey's forehead, seemingly casually asking:
"And why are you being so direct today? You didn't even bother looking at the documents?"
"When I couldn't get in touch with you, I went to the Arctic to clear my head. Maybe there's no signal there. As for those documents, don't bother looking for them anymore. I'm not interested."
Joey actually went to the Arctic to find something that belonged to him.
The Kryptonian spaceship that carried him to Earth was more of an escape pod than a spaceship.
In Joey's memory, besides this small survival pod, there was another Kryptonian spaceship that accompanied Superman to Earth.
Using this spaceship as a base, Superman built his own secret base in the Arctic, filled with historical relics from Krypton. He named this base "Fortress of Solitude".
The real Superman wasn't as sunny as he seemed. As an extraterrestrial, perhaps no one could ever truly understand him, otherwise he wouldn't have named his secret base Loneliness.
But Joey, with his unreliable super vision, turned the entire Arctic ice sheet upside down, yet still couldn't find a trace of Krypton.
This made him feel that he might be even more alone in the world than Clark Kent.
Clark at least still has his parents and Lois Lane, his relics from his Arctic homeland, and his Justice League allies, while he is now all alone.
Joey suddenly realized that if he decided to destroy the entire Earth now, no one on the planet would be able to exploit his weakness.
"What are you thinking about, kid? You're not still angry about what happened at church today, are you?"
Storm gently patted Joey's back, like a mother comforting her child:
"Don't worry, I've already told that bitch Madeline that you won't be bothered with church stuff anymore."
Storm's hopes for Joey were boundless, especially after hearing that the Armaments Department couldn't implant anything under his skin, which almost convinced her that Joey was as indestructible as Homelander.
Storm whispered in Joey's ear, like the first serpent in the Garden of Eden:
"You are the most perfect one among us, you are the most virtuous person, a true god. They should all worship you, not the god they imagine."
Seeing that Joey remained silent, Storm could only sigh.
The future leader of pure-blooded humans, the commander of the Aryan superhuman army, whom he plans to be, cannot be such a silent, calm, and unambitious person.
This child still needs better guidance, and guidance from his own parents.
Joey has never been a quiet and composed person. A quiet person can't be a reporter, and if he were calm enough, he wouldn't have chosen a work environment where he could be shot at any time.
He initially approached the Water Corporation and Storm Girl simply because he thought they had readily available resources to help him find the magical scrolls he needed; he had no intention of fulfilling Clara's hopes.
In particular, this hope just didn't seem right. The other day, Clara uttered "Ubermensch," and I spent a few minutes looking it up in dictionaries of several major European language families, only to find that it meant "superman" in German.
Is this a legitimate company? Or is it some kind of Hydra or something? How much do the superheroes associated with this company even know?
At this moment, Joey's professional habits, which had been dormant for more than a decade, suddenly kicked in, and he was pondering whether he should investigate further.
Just then, Clara, who was holding her, tapped her head:
"What on earth are you thinking about all day? You never say a word!"
Joey raised his head, a hint of fighting spirit igniting in his eyes. He stretched out his body and pulled Storm Clara into his arms.
"I was just thinking about whether I should do something that is good for the world and that is right."
"Of course, you're Superman, you're always right! You can do anything you want for the world!"
Storm chuckled, turned around and straddled Joey. The sheet slipped down, revealing Joey and her perfect figure in full view.
"But it's already so late, why don't we do something else first?"
Joey felt that Storm sometimes made sense, and that investigating Walter could be done later.

If there's anything more difficult than killing someone and then disposing of the body, it's killing a superhuman and then disposing of the body.
Is there something even more troublesome?
That means the superhuman who was supposed to be disposed of is still alive.
Hughie, who had been living in fear of killing someone, breathed a sigh of relief when he saw that the Invisible Man was still alive, realizing that things hadn't reached the point of no return.
"Are you out of your mind, Hughie?"
Butcher's view on this is clearly more rational:
"We have to kill him now, he's already seen our faces!"
"But...we can talk to him about it..."
Hughie was, after all, just an ordinary person, and he still instinctively resisted the idea of killing.
[Yes, talk to him, then let him go. He'll go back and tell the other superheroes, like A-Train, and then you can be torn to pieces by superhumans just like Robin.]
Hughie's anger flared up again and again at the repeated mentions of his past, where he was smashed to pieces by a superhero, so much so that he roared at Butcher:
"You're not allowed to talk about my girlfriend again! You bastard pretending to be an FBI agent!"
Butcher, cigarette dangling from his lips, turned around with an innocent look on his face. It seemed the immense pressure had caused the poor little boy, Hughie, to hallucinate.
"I didn't say a word, Hughie."
He was wondering who could get rid of the junk in his trunk.
Well, there really is one—a weapons master, a chemical expert, and my former teammate, the "Frenchman."
With that thought in mind, Butcher stepped on the gas and sped toward his good friend, the Frenchman's, place.
"Who the hell is your buddy?! Get out of my territory!"
When Butcher came to the Frenchman's door, he was just about to have another intimate moment with his live-in lover. But the good thing didn't happen, and seeing Butcher's face, it was hard for him to be very polite.
"Come here."
Butcher, with a "I'll show you a good treasure" look on his face, beckoned the Frenchman to the trunk of the car.
The Frenchman thought that Butcher had a change of heart and was going to return the huge sum of money he owed him last time, so he ran over excitedly, only to find a semi-transparent figure in the trunk.
And the figure was speaking:
"You three bastards, I've memorized your faces. When Homelander finds me, I'll personally kill you all, your families, your friends... Aaaaaaah!"
The Frenchman immediately felt a chill run from his heels to the top of his head—this was the Invisible Man, one of the Super Seven!
"Butcher, I am [a type of alpaca]!"
Butcher had just temporarily knocked the Invisible Man unconscious again with a stun gun, then looked triumphantly at the impotently furious Frenchman:
"Welcome aboard our pirate ship, my friend. It's time to do the right thing."

Xingguang has had a dream since she was a child: to become an idol... cough, no, to become a hero.
He had already reached the pinnacle of his heroism, just one step away from his childhood dream, but a person with connections beat him to it.
That was a spot in the world's strongest superhero team, "The Seven," his ultimate dream since childhood, which had been snatched away from him by someone else.
"Sometimes, being a hero doesn't necessarily mean being in the spotlight."
Stan Edgar, the most powerful man in the Vought Corporation, met with Starlight, accompanied by Blackie, and offered her a deal she couldn't refuse:
"I'm sorry you lost your spot in the Super Seven, but I assure you, it's only temporary. When the time is right, I will put you back in that spotlight. But..."
It's coming—Starlight isn't as innocent as she usually appears. Her desire to become a superhero and help others is a genuine expression of her feelings, but that doesn't mean she's naive.
As long as she still wants that spot in the Super Seven, she has no choice but to accept whatever conditions this person proposes next.
The question now is, what price am I willing to pay for this position?
"What kind of expression is that?"
Stan Edgar, being an old fox, naturally knew what was going on with the slight displeasure on Starlight's young face.
But he simply reached out his hand, had Xuanse bring over a stack of documents, and then handed them over:
"As I just said, heroes are not those who stand in the spotlight."
Xingguang took the document and flipped through a few pages, discovering it contained a series of unsolved cases, the vast majority of which involved missing children. She was somewhat puzzled:
"This is?"
"An opportunity that allows you to help others."
I can provide you with direct financial, technical, and intelligence support, secret bases, supercomputers, and cover for your identity.
It lets you unravel the mystery like a Tyrannosaurus Rex.
Stan Edgar's tone was steady, devoid of any emotional fluctuation, yet at that moment it seemed so alluring:
"Take this as a test for you. Imagine if you could really solve these unsolved mysteries, you would be a hero to all the people of America."
This goes far beyond any beauty pageant title; no one can stop you from joining the Seven. But I must tell you beforehand, these cases are extremely difficult.
Even the most difficult situation couldn't be worse than returning to his hometown in Iowa with his tail between his legs. The cancellation of his Starlight qualification had already infuriated his mother.
If I choose to give up now, I won't be able to explain it to my mother who has poured so much love and care into me.
Now, at least I have a tiny bit of hope?
And thank goodness, what I was doing was the right thing.
