Everyday Life of a Top Student at Hogwarts
Chapter 42 Forbidden Forest
Upon entering the cabin, the interior was even more cramped than it appeared from the outside. Various hams and herbs hung from the ceiling, and the corners were piled with strange and unusual objects, including enormous feathers, shimmering carapaces, and things that looked like dragon eggs. A huge wooden table occupied most of the space, covered with copper pots and glass bottles of various sizes.
"Sit, sit," Hagrid waved his pink umbrella, which Karen knew was actually his wand, and several chairs slid over automatically. "Would you like some tea? I made it myself, with a touch of white succinate; it's very good for your health!"
Fabian's eyes lit up when he saw the various strange and unusual things hanging on the wall: "Amazing! Were these all left behind by creatures from the Forbidden Forest?"
“Mostly,” Hagrid said proudly, pouring everyone a cup of tea steaming with purple smoke. “I get along very well with them. The Aragogs live deep in the Forbidden Forest—”
"Aragok?" Ernesto frowned. "That's...?"
"A giant eight-eyed spider," Hagrid said cheerfully, "I raised it from a cub, and now it has a whole family!"
Karen noticed his three roommates' faces turn pale simultaneously. He quickly changed the subject: "Mr. Hagrid, we're really eager to see the magical creatures of the Forbidden Forest. Of course, only in the outermost, safest area..."
Hagrid's expression turned serious: "The Forbidden Forest is too dangerous for first-year students. Dumbledore has explicitly forbidden it—"
“We completely understand,” Karen said sincerely, “but…we’ve heard you know the Forbidden Forest best. If you could show us a small part of the outermost edge, let us see gentle creatures like the Bowtruckle…”
Hagrid's black beard twitched, clearly indicating an internal struggle. Karen decided to give it her all.
"Fred and George said you're the bravest man they've ever met," Karen whispered, "and that your knowledge of magical creatures is unparalleled."
Hagrid's face flushed red, and a shy smile appeared beneath his beard: "Did those two little bastards really say that?"
"Not only that," Wesley suddenly interjected, his reddish-brown hair swaying with exaggerated gestures, "They say you once tamed a fire-breathing dragon!"
"Oh, that's a lie, though I really do want to keep a dragon," Hagrid blurted out, then suddenly realized he'd spoken the truth and quickly coughed twice. "I meant dragons are just too dangerous!"
Fabian adjusted his glasses, his eyes behind the lenses gleaming with intelligence: "Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them says that Bowtruckles usually live on wandwood trees; they are gentle, just a little shy..."
"That's right!" Hagrid's attention was immediately diverted. "Clever lad! There really is a magical forest on the outskirts of the Forbidden Forest, and I know the Bowtruckles there very well!"
Ernesto took a graceful sip of tea, though his eyebrows furrowed almost imperceptibly as he tasted it. "If it's just going to that grove... it should be safe, right?"
Hagrid rubbed his enormous hands together, his dark eyes gleaming with excitement: "Hmm... if it's just the perimeter... and I'm with you... it should be fine... but you must promise to strictly follow my instructions!"
"We promise!" the four answered in unison.
Half an hour later, they stood at the edge of the forbidden forest. Sunlight, filtered through the dense canopy, dappled across the leaf-strewn ground. The air was filled with the fresh scent of earth and vegetation, and the rustling of unknown creatures echoed in the distance.
"Remember," Hagrid whispered, even though there seemed to be no one else around, "stay close to me, don't touch any unfamiliar plants or creatures, and most importantly—don't go alone!"
The four nodded seriously. Karen's grey-blue eyes scanned the surroundings warily; his True Eye could see faint flows of magic—energy emanating from magical plants hidden among ordinary plants.
Hagrid led them along a barely visible path. Toothpick excitedly ran ahead, occasionally looking back to make sure everyone was keeping up.
"Look over there," Hagrid pointed to a cluster of glowing blue mushrooms, "those are moon mushrooms. They only glow during a full moon and can be used to make memory potions."
Fabian immediately pulled out a small notebook to jot it down, the blue light of the mushrooms reflecting off his glasses: "Amazing! The book says they only grow in places where unicorns are often seen!"
"That's right," Hagrid said happily. "I even saw a unicorn drinking water around here last week."
Just then, Karen's Eye of Truth detected an unusual flow of magic in the bushes. He gently tugged at Hagrid's sleeve: "There's something over there..."
Hagrid followed his gaze, a look of surprise spreading across his face. "Good eye, child! That's a lacewing!"
He carefully parted the bushes, revealing an intricate structure made of twigs and leaves, inside which curled up a creature entirely green, its forelimbs resembling two tender leaf ribbons.
"Wow..." Wesley exclaimed softly, "It seems to be sleeping?"
"Laceycetes are masters of disguise," Hagrid explained in a low voice. "They can perfectly mimic the colors and textures of the surrounding plants. This one looks like it just molted, which is why the colors are so vibrant."
Ernesto, unusually intrigued, stared intently into his grey eyes: "It can predict the weather, right?"
"That's right!" Hagrid nodded approvingly. "Look at where it built its nest—so high off the ground—that means there will be a heavy snowfall this winter!"
Karen quietly observed the magical creature. In his vision, the magic flowing within the lacewing exhibited a peculiar ripple-like pattern, resonating with the magic of the surrounding plants. This might explain their ability to predict the weather—to sense subtle changes in the magic of nature.
Continuing on, they came to a relatively open clearing in the woods. The trees here were taller, their trunks gleaming with a silvery-grey sheen.
"Wand Grove," Hagrid announced, "is home to trees perfect for making wands—holly, wild pear, oak…"
Fabien was already taking notes eagerly, frequently referring to the encyclopedia he carried with him. Wesley curiously touched the bark of a mountain pear tree, while Ernesto looked up to observe the shape of the canopy, seemingly pondering its astrological significance.
"Now, look closely," Hagrid pulled a small leather pouch from his pocket, "The Bowtruckle loves these little things..."
He poured out a few glittering pebbles—Karen recognized them as the shells of ground beetles. Hagrid placed them at the base of a particularly thick holly tree, then stepped back a few paces.
At first, nothing happened. Then, a pair of round, black eyes suddenly opened on the bark, followed by a second pair, a third pair... Tiny, twig-like creatures emerged from the cracks in the bark, cautiously looking around.
"Bowlets," Hagrid whispered proudly, "are the protectors of trees."
The small creatures were about fifteen centimeters tall, their bodies seemingly pieced together from twigs and bark, with two large eyes taking up most of their faces. They cautiously approached the ground beetle's shell, and after confirming there was no danger, they quickly grabbed their spoils and disappeared into the gaps in the bark.
"So cute!" Wesley couldn't help but cheer softly, his red hair standing on end with excitement.
Just then, Karen's Eye of Truth suddenly detected a dangerous fluctuation of magical energy. He turned sharply to look at the bushes on his right—something was moving there, and moving very fast.
"Hagrid!" he called out alertly.
Almost simultaneously, three black creatures the size of footballs sprang out of the bushes—juvenile eight-eyed giant spiders! Their eight eyes gleamed with greed, their sharp pincers clicked, and they pounced straight at the four boys!
"The children of Aragog!" Hagrid exclaimed, quickly stepping in front of the boys. "Stop! These are guests!"
But the spiderlings seemed not to understand or care about Hagrid's commands. One of them jumped directly at Wesley, startling him so much that he screamed and fell to the ground.
Karen instinctively drew her wand. Without chanting a spell, a blinding light burst from the tip of the wand, momentarily blinding the spider.
Hagrid seized the opportunity to grab the two spiders by their hind legs and lifted them up like chicks: "Bad kids! I said stop!" The third spider was driven back by the howling of its teeth.
"They...they want to eat us!" Fabian was pale, clutching his glasses tightly as if they could provide some kind of protection.
"Oh, no, no," Hagrid said reassuringly, expertly examining the struggling spider in his hand, "They're just too small, they don't understand yet. There are too many children in Aragog, and sometimes there isn't enough food to go around..."
Karen helped the still-shaken Wesley to his feet, alarm bells ringing in his mind. If even a juvenile eight-eyed giant spider was this dangerous, the threat posed by an adult spider was unimaginable. He became even more determined not to venture into the Forbidden Forest without thorough preparation.
"We should go back," Ernesto said, though he tried to remain calm, a hint of panic still lingering in his grey eyes. "It's getting dark."
Hagrid looked somewhat disappointed, but nodded nonetheless. "You're right, children. Today's adventure ends here." He released the two small spiders back into the bushes and sternly commanded, "Go home! Tell Aragog I'll bring food later!"
On the way back, the four boys were unusually quiet, each still immersed in their thrilling experience. Only Hagrid was still enthusiastically discussing the wonders of the Forbidden Forest.
"Those little spiders will grow up to be very docile," he comforted them. "Aragok is very reasonable..."
Karen and her three roommates exchanged knowing glances. They all knew that if Hagrid hadn't been there, the situation could have been extremely dangerous.
By the time they reached the edge of the castle, the setting sun had bathed the Hogwarts towers in gold. Hagrid stopped by the vegetable garden.
"Remember, children," he said sternly, "don't tell anyone about what happened today, not even the other students. Dumbledore trusts me, but some professors... cough cough... anyway, it's our little secret, understand?"
The four nodded earnestly. Karen said sincerely, "Thank you, Hagrid. Today was a wonderful experience."
Hagrid's face flushed again, and a happy smile appeared beneath his beard: "You're always welcome to come for tea again! Maybe next time I can show you some of my other pets."
After saying goodbye to Hagrid, the four hurried through the vegetable garden and, after making sure no one was watching, hid in an abandoned greenhouse.
"Merlin's pants!" Wesley finally burst out, his red hair even more disheveled with excitement. "We really saw an eight-eyed giant spider! Alive! The kind that eats people!"
"Just a juvenile form," Enesto said, trying to sound calm, but Karen noticed his hands were still trembling slightly. "However... it is indeed more aggressive than I imagined."
Fabian had already opened his notebook and was quickly jotting down his observations of the day: "The habitat habits of lacewings, the feeding behavior of the tree-guarding bower, the attack patterns of giant eye spider larvae... these are not recorded in detail in the textbook!"
Karen pulled a piece of parchment from her pocket and tapped it with her wand: "Reveal your true form." The route and markings they had just taken appeared on the parchment.
"When...?" Ernesto asked in surprise.
"I took notes as I went," Karen smiled, "using a combination of magic and Muggle drawing skills. We need a detailed map if we want to explore the Forbidden Forest safely again."
Wesley leaned closer, his reddish-brown hair brushing against Karen's cheek: "Great! We can mark the danger zones and safe observation points!"
"This violates school rules," Ernesto frowned, but his gray eyes gleamed with excitement, "...but it is indeed very useful."
Fabian adjusted his glasses: "We should systematically record every creature and plant we encounter, including their habits and habitats. This is not only an adventure, but also a valuable learning opportunity!"
"So," he rolled up the map, his grey-blue eyes gleaming in the setting sun, "the Ravenclaw Forbidden Forest Expedition is officially formed?"
"Yeah!" Wesley cheered, nearly knocking over a flowerpot.
"Keep your voice down!" Ernesto hurriedly stopped him, but the corners of his mouth couldn't help but turn up.
Fabian has already written the title on the new page: "Forbidden Forest Biological Observation Log - Volume 1".
