Chapter 10 First Exploration of the Old Forest

At dawn, a figure arrived at the high fence outside Bucks Town.

The hobbits of Deerland are filled with fear and vigilance towards the Old Forest. From a young age, they are constantly instilled with the dangers of the Old Forest, so few people dare to approach the High Hedges.

Hundreds of years ago, to defend against the encroachment of the old forest trees, the hobbits of Deerland specifically set up a hedgerow on the eastern side of the land.

Today, these hedges have grown tall and dense, like a magnificent city wall, stretching from the Brandy River, around the Willow River to the end of the hedge, forming a large arc that extends for more than twenty miles.

Dui walked for miles along the tall fence, but couldn't find a gap in the fence to pass through.

And it's impossible to flip over.

Left with no other option, Dui drew the two cleavers from his waist.

The cleaver flew from his hand, transforming into two spinning throwing knives that relentlessly slashed at a spot on the hedge.

In an instant, broken leaves and branches flew everywhere.

A hole that was being dug deeper and deeper into the hedge wall.

Finally, the tunnel was opened.

A cave entrance, several meters deep and large enough for one person to pass through, appeared. Looking through the cave, one could see the old forest on the other side at a glance.

Dui crawled through the hole.

There is a 100-foot-wide buffer zone between the hedge and the old forest, where no trees grow except for weeds, as if the trees of the old forest could avoid it.

Dui kicked the ground, where traces of burning could still be faintly seen.

It is likely that the hobbits of Deerland once engaged in a fierce battle with the Old Forest, even resorting to fire to repel the Old Forest's trees.

Stepping across the buffer zone, Dui arrived at the edge of the old forest and walked straight in without stopping.

As soon as you step into the woods,

Dui felt a sense of oppression.

It felt as if countless eyes were watching him with malice and hostility.

He followed the direction of his gaze, finally settling on the ancient trees.

These trees look very old; they are tall and large, with branches that seem to be baring and twisting. You can vaguely hear whispers and murmurs, as if they are plotting something.

Dui appeared oblivious, but in reality, he was on high alert and constantly used his magic to sense the surrounding trees.

Suddenly, a thick tree branch fell down and hit Dui on the head.

"Armor for protection!"

Dui reacted quickly, and an invisible shield appeared above his head, blocking the falling branches.

Since acquiring "Dark Forces: The Defense Guide," the first spell Dui chose to practice was the Ironclad Spell. The Ironclad Spell can block most spell attacks and all physical attacks, making it arguably the most practical spell for survival.

However, this spell is quite difficult; even some seventh-year students at Hogwarts might not be able to master it, let alone Dui, who doesn't have a wand.

Dui practiced day and night for a whole month before he was able to barely manage to cast the Ironclad Spell.

Sure enough, the moment he learned the Ironclad Spell, he came to the old forest to put it into practice.

Seeing that the attack had missed, the previously quiet trees began to stir, their branches and leaves rustling even without wind.

Dui sensed the growing hostility from the surrounding trees and stopped holding back.

Two cleavers flew out from his waist in an instant, selecting the largest oak tree and pine branch respectively, cutting off two straight branches as thick as a wrist, and maneuvering the branches back.

Now was the time to run, so Dui immediately turned around, grabbed the branch, and ran out of the woods.

Enraged by the act of having its branches cut, the oak and pine trees let out a deep growl, their massive bodies twisting and turning, their dry bark falling away to reveal their thick trunks.

The ground shook, the soil bulged up as if an earth dragon were turning over, and thick tree roots burst out of the ground, trying to trip or hit him.

"What the hell? So angry? It's just a tree branch! So petty!"

Dui ran and grumbled as he went, two boning knives flying around him, cutting down the tree roots that attacked him one by one.

But when faced with a huge tree root as thick as a bucket, even a cleaver is helpless and cannot cut it in one stroke.

"Legs stiffen and he dies!"

The spell struck the tree roots, causing them to stiffen and involuntarily entangle together, forming an unbreakable knot that could no longer pose a threat to Dui.

Dui was overjoyed; he hadn't expected the leg-locking spell to be so effective, actually locking the tree roots in place.

Dui didn't linger in the fight. Taking advantage of the two trees being preoccupied with their own problems, he immediately left the old forest without looking back, crossed the buffer zone, and crawled through a hole in the hedge before finally breathing a sigh of relief.

Looking at the oak and pine branches in his hands, Dui grinned. Although he was a little disappointed that he couldn't sign in, he was still glad to have gotten the materials for his wand.

He covered the hole in the hedge slightly and then took the branches back to Stag Town.

Back at Zogo Baggins' house, Dui borrowed tools from Zogo and began to work on the branches. He peeled off the bark, cut off the excess, and carefully polished them. Finally, two straight, smooth sticks were placed in front of him.

Picking up an oak stick that hardly qualifies as a wand, Dui tried to infuse magic into it, and his eyes lit up, revealing a smile.

The magic flowed smoothly through the wooden stick, and apart from a slight stiffness, it was perfectly suited for making wands.

He put down the oak and picked up the pine, trying to infuse it with magic.

Pine wood can also channel magic, but compared to oak, it has a stronger resistance.

This means that the trees in the old forest can be used as materials to make the wand!

This conclusion greatly excited Dui. Although he still didn't know how to make a wand, the discovery of the wand material gave him hope.

As for the resistance encountered when injecting magic, Dui speculated that it might be because the wand wood was not compatible with his.

In the magical world, wizards use different types of wood for their wands. For example, Harry Potter's wand is made of holly, Voldemort's is made of yew, and Dumbledore's Elder Wand is made of elderwood. If an incompatible wand is used, it is easy to fail to exert its full power or even cause unpredictable accidents.

Oak and pine are not suitable for him, but Dui is quite curious about what wood his wand is made of.

He remembered that the old forest had a wide variety of trees, and perhaps he could make several trips to the old forest and collect more timber to try them out.

However, he needs to do one thing first.

Dui's gaze fell on the two pots of white sage. After more than a month of magical watering, the white sage had grown to a meter tall and was almost ripe.

It was another moonlit night. Dui held two branches of white hibiscus in his hands and poured magic into them continuously. Under the nourishment of the magic, the white hibiscus became more and more vibrant and juicy, as if it could be squeezed to release water.

At a certain moment, the white sap reacted, and the silvery moonlight was attracted and gathered by the white sap, emitting a faint silvery glow.

Bathed in moonlight, the white sage grew rapidly, reaching the height of an adult in just a short time, and emitting a rich, fresh fragrance of grass and trees.
