Hogwarts wizards who signed in to Middle-earth...

Chapter 31 The Gray-Robed Wizard's Visit

The wizard, dressed in a gray robe, carrying a vine staff as tall as himself in one hand and a pipe in the other, walked to Hobbiton.

Instead of heading straight for his destination, the wizard entered the town and went to the Green Dragon Tavern first.

The Hobbit tavern wasn't very friendly to wizards of short stature, so he had to stoop all the way to the bar and call out to the tavern owner, "A glass of ale, please!" Then he plopped down on a stool, straightened up, and breathed a sigh of relief.

The tavern fell silent for a moment as all the hobbits stared at him with surprise and curiosity.

The tavern owner, a plump old man, paused for a moment upon seeing the wizard, then exclaimed with delight, "Gandalf! When did you arrive in the Shire?"

The grey-robed wizard greeted him with a smile, "Hello, Mr. Barney-McBarrel. I'm traveling and just happened to be passing through the Shire, so I stopped here to rest and catch my breath."

The tavern owner clearly knew Gandalf, and handed him a glass of ale, saying, "This one's on me."

"Gandalf, it's been so long since you've been to Hobbiton, it feels like over a decade ago. Where have you been all these years?"

"Oh, thank you! I've been traveling around a lot lately, and in the last few years I've been to the East," Gandalf said simply, taking a sip of his drink, then casually asked, "By the way, has anything interesting happened in the Shire lately? Could you tell me about it?"

"New things? There's plenty!" The tavern owner exclaimed with enthusiasm. "...Gandalf, you wouldn't believe it, besides you, a wizard has recently arrived in the Shire. He's much younger than you, though, and he's living in our village with Bilbo Baggins!"

Gandalf, as if intrigued, asked, "Oh, a young wizard? Could you tell me about him?"

The tavern owner, as if he had found the perfect audience, immediately launched into a long spiel: "That young wizard is named Duir. Like you, he loves to travel. He went on a journey once before and made quite a name for himself. It is said that he helped the inhabitants of Stagland resist the invasion of the old forest's trees, so he also has the title of 'The Treecutter'..."

As Gandalf listened to the tavern owner's endless narration, Duir's image gradually took shape in his mind. A thoughtful look flashed in his deep blue eyes, and the smoke he exhaled obscured his expression.

Meanwhile, in the bottom of the bag, Dui has been very busy these past few days.

As the mandrake entered adolescence, it became unpredictable and taciturn. It even crawled out of the soil once, trying to escape, because it was uncomfortable living in the pot.

Fortunately, Dui discovered it in time and used a petrification spell to freeze the mandrake that had almost run out of the yard.

Otherwise, if it really escapes and matures in the wild, that would be a real disaster!

To prevent the two mandrakes from escaping again, Dui simply used Transfiguration to create a small glass greenhouse near the Bag Bottom Hole, partly to provide them with a suitable growing environment and partly to prevent them from escaping.

Moreover, as the mandrakes mature, their calls become even more dangerous.

To avoid harming himself or Bill, he also placed multiple layers of glass dome over the two mandrake plants to block their sounds as much as possible.

Because of the sudden cold snap in spring, Dui had to put socks and scarves on the two pots of mandrake plants to prevent them from catching a cold and getting sick.

The socks and scarf were a gift from the skillful Bilbo, who spent an entire night knitting them from wool.

It can be said that they took great care of the mandrake as if it were their child.

That afternoon, Dui and Bilbo were having afternoon tea when there was a knock on the door of Bag End.

The two exchanged a puzzled look. Who could be coming?

Bilbo put down the biscuit, ran quickly to the door, and opened it.

Upon closer inspection, a tall figure was blocking the entrance, his head completely obscured.

Bilbo took a few steps back, straining to look up. Upon seeing the newcomer, his face lit up with surprise: "Gandalf! What brings you here?"

Dui, who was drinking tea, paused when he heard Bilbo's surprised voice. He immediately put down his teacup, turned to the side, and peeked towards the door.

Standing at the door was Gandalf the Grey, the wizard, leaning on his wicker staff. He bent down and greeted Bilbo with a smile, "Hello, Bilbo. I just happened to be passing through the Shire and thought I'd stop by for a rest. Would you be so kind as to stop by?"

"Of course, you're very welcome!" Bilbo said quickly, then stepped aside to invite him in. "Please come in, Gandalf, you've come at the perfect time! We're having afternoon tea, welcome to join us!"

"Oh, it seems I've come at just the right time," Gandalf said with a broad smile.

Bending down into Bag End, he handed the hat and cane to Bilbo. He immediately spotted Dui sitting in the living room. Their eyes met, and Dui's gaze gleamed. He then smiled and said, "Looks like there are other guests here besides me."

Duy stood up and walked towards Gandalf, politely introducing himself: "Nice to meet you, Gandalf. I'm Duy, it's a pleasure to meet you!"

Gandalf sized up the young wizard with black hair and black eyes, his gaze lingering for a moment on the black wizard's robes before him. A look of surprise crossed his face. "You know Goldenberry, the River Daughter of the Old Forest?"

Duy noticed Gandalf's gaze and realized that he had noticed the blessing of Goldenberry on his wizard robes. He smiled and nodded, "Yes, I know Lady Goldenberry and Tom. I was invited to stay at their house for a while before. They are all very friendly and kind people."

Upon hearing this, Gandalf paid even more attention to Dui.

Although Lady Goldenberry and Tom Bombadil do not participate in the conflicts of Middle-earth, those who are invited to their homes are generally good people.

Not to mention, Dui was also wearing a blessed robe woven by Lady Goldenberry from black swan feathers and silver threads, a privilege not afforded to ordinary guests.

"Alright, come and have afternoon tea with us," Bilbo said, gesturing for the two to sit down.

The three sat around the fireplace, enjoying tea, desserts, and cookies while chatting.

"Gandalf, where have you been all these years?" Bilbo asked curiously.

Gandalf took a bite of a biscuit before slowly saying, "Oh, I've spent most of my time traveling in the East these past few years. First, I lived with the elves for a few years, then I went to the Northern Wilderness, and finally stayed in the Misty Mountains for a while before returning to the Plains of Eliador."

Hearing Gandalf's words, Bilbo's face lit up with longing, and he couldn't help but ask, "Gandalf, are elves as beautiful as the legends say?"

Gandalf looked at Bilbo with a smile in his eyes and said, "The beauty of the elves cannot be summed up in a single word. You have to witness it for yourself to truly understand. If you are curious about them, you can go to the elven lands. They welcome all friendly visitors."

Bilbo, though longing for it, shook his head. "I'm just an ordinary hobbit. Going on adventures is not for me. It's too dangerous, and it would make me miss breakfast, lunch, afternoon tea, dinner, and supper. That would be terrible!"

Seeing this, Gandalf did not continue to persuade him. Instead, he looked at Duy, who had not spoken, and asked with curiosity, "Wizard Duy, where did you come from? Judging from your hair and eyes, did you come from the Far East?"

Dui shook his head. "No, I haven't been to the East yet. I come from a very far place. This is my first time in Central Continent."

Gandalf looked at him intently upon hearing this. His profound wisdom gave him the ability to discern truth from falsehood, and he could tell that Dui was not lying. At the same time, he was also filled with doubt.
