Chapter 66 Rich Lady Lux
Under the astonished gazes of Holmes and Vera, Lux almost scrambled down from the carriage, her feet barely touching the slightly damp cobblestones of London before she regained a sense of solid ground.
"Uh... Mr. Holmes, I'll take care of Vera!" Lux tried to make her voice sound reliable as she pulled the still somewhat timid Vera into her arms.
"Don't worry! The food at Hogwarts is much better than at St. Mungo's, and there's absolutely no weird potion smell, right Vera?"
Vera nodded vigorously, her small hands gripping Lux's clothes tightly, while her eyes curiously surveyed the unfamiliar streets and pedestrians around her.
Holmes looked at Lux's "I'll take care of it" attitude, and his lips twitched almost imperceptibly. Miss Lux had been quite reliable in the previous case, but in the end he just nodded slightly.
"Well then, Miss Lux, I'm entrusting Vera to you. I wish you all the best at Hogwarts." He paused, his gaze sweeping over Vera. "Keep in touch, Vera."
"I will, Mr. Holmes!" Vera replied softly but firmly.
As she watched Holmes disappear into the London morning mist, Lux let out a long sigh of relief, feeling as if most of the invisible pressure on her back had been lifted instantly.
"Come on, Vera! I'll show you the world!" She waved her hand with an air of grandeur and pulled Vera toward the inconspicuous black door of the Leaky Cauldron.
Pushing open the creaking wooden door of the bar, a smell mixed with alcohol, grilled sausages, and dust hits you.
It was still early, and there weren't many people in the bar, but the eyes of several familiar patrons and the bar owner, who was wiping the bar counter, lit up instantly when they saw Lux's signature blonde hair.
"Hey! Isn't this our Flying Kick Witch?!" A burly man with a full beard raised his glass, his voice booming. "The newspapers say you knocked out that werewolf leader with one kick! Well done!"
"No, it's been so long! She's now a genius witch, the youngest winner!"
"Miss Lux! I heard you and Professor Slughorn won the Gobaloth Prize? Merlin's beard!" Another wizard in an elegant robe put down the Daily Prophet, whose front page headline featured a photo of Lux and Slughorn receiving the award in Paris.
The shopkeeper stopped wiping the cups and put on a smile: "Miss Lux, welcome back! And who is this?" He looked at Vera curiously.
Lux felt like the muscles in her face were about to freeze from smiling, as she responded to the enthusiastic greetings.
"Good luck, it's all good luck!" "It's all thanks to the excellent guidance of the Hogwarts professors!"
He pulled Vera along quickly through the bar and headed straight for the backyard.
Thank you everyone! I'm in a hurry! Let's talk next time!
Vera was a little confused by the sudden attention and asked softly, "Sister Lux, why do they all know you?"
"Uh... well," Lux mumbled, tapping the third brick above the trash can with her wand, "it's probably because I'm... cheerful and outgoing? Yes, cheerful and outgoing!"
As she watched the brick wall rotate and open, revealing the bustling Diagon Alley behind it, she quickly changed the subject, "Look! Welcome to the magical world, Diagon Alley!"
Vera's eyes widened instantly, and her mouth opened wide into a circle.
Flying owls, automatically knitting needles in shop windows, floating brooms—everything before her eyes was more magical than any fairy tale she had ever heard. She gripped Lux's hand tightly, as if afraid she would be swept away by this bizarre world.
"Let's go, first stop, Gringotts!" Lux had a clear goal. She pulled Vera through the crowd and headed straight for the towering building.
She barely had any Galleons left in her pocket, and since she didn't need to spend any money while living at the manor, her prize money was still lying in Gringotts' vault.
Slughorn took a Galleon as a prize, but he was more interested in the golden crucible.
The fairy teller expressionlessly verified the vault key and identification that Lux handed over, then scrutinized Vera with a critical look.
Vera shrank back behind Lux because of his sharp gaze.
"And who is this young lady?" the fairy's voice was high-pitched.
"My cousin, Vera Watson, is going to Hogwarts this year too," Lux lied without batting an eye, while giving Vera a little push forward.
"Take her to see the world and get some pocket money while we're at it."
The pull ring seemed to wrinkle its nose slightly, but didn't ask any more questions, simply gesturing for them to follow.
Passing through the heavy gate and getting on the crazy little cart, Vera screamed in fright and clung tightly to Lux's arm. Lux, on the other hand, recalled the roller coaster from her past life. The only difference was that this fairy cart clearly had no safety measures.
The cart sped, swooped, and made sharp turns along the maze-like tracks, the icy air stinging one's face.
When the cart finally came to a stop with a creak in front of a vault numbered [943], Vera's face had turned deathly pale.
The fairy inserted the key into the vault door, and the heavy, magically designed door slid open rapidly to both sides.
Then, Vera saw the light.
It wasn't lamplight, but a dazzling golden light reflected from the small mountain of Galleons, Silver Sickles, and Bronze Nats.
The vault wasn't large, but it was piled high with coins, not just a few scattered bags, but like a small mountain, stretching from the floor to almost the ceiling. Galleons gleamed with a metallic sheen in the dim light; it was a fortune that would make any wizard ecstatic.
Vera gasped, covered her mouth with her small hand, and stared wide-eyed even more than when she had seen the flying broom.
She had never in her life, no, she had never even dreamed of having so much money. The therapist at St. Mungo's had mentioned in casual conversation that one Galleon could be exchanged for many, many pounds. How much was there here?
Lux's heart was pounding, and she felt her health bar skyrocketing.
She longed to pounce on this mountain of money, roll around in it, and bury herself in it.
But when Lux caught a glimpse of Vera's shocked yet somewhat adoring gaze, she forcefully suppressed the urge.
You still need to maintain a good image in front of children.
"Ahem," Lux cleared her throat, trying to make her voice sound calm and even indifferent.
"Hmm, they're pretty efficient. Vera, hold this bag for me."
Lux, feigning composure, stepped forward and plucked several large handfuls of gold Galleons and silver Sickles from the edge of the mountain of money, stuffing them into the dragon skin bags that Vera handed her, which were enchanted with the Unseen Stretching Charm.
Lux's movements seemed casual, but every time her fingers touched the cool, smooth surface of the gold coin, she felt her fingertips tremble slightly.
"Alright, this should be enough." Lux weighed the bag in her hand, feeling more at ease than ever before. She pulled Vera, who was still savoring the moment, and got back into the crazy little cart.
Standing firmly on solid ground at the Gringotts entrance once more, Vera seemed to regain her voice, exclaiming softly, "Lux...you're so rich!"
Lux puffed out her chest, trying to maintain her composure: "No problem, no problem at all! Knowledge is power, and power is Galon! Come on, I'll take you to pick out a good wand!"
